Tracing the power-law component in the energy spectrum of black hole candidates as a function of the QPO frequency

We investigated the relation between the centroid frequency of the quasi-periodic oscillation observed in the power density spectra of a sample of galactic black-hole candidates with the power-law photon index obtained from spectral fits. Our aim is to avoid inner accretion disk radius determination directly from spectral fits, given the uncertainties of the absolute values obtained in that way, but to base our analysis on the likely association of QPO frequency to a characteristic radius. We used archival RXTE data of GRS 1915+105 and published parameters for GRO 1655-40, XTE J1550-564, XTE J1748-288 and 4U 1630-47. While for low values of the QPO frequency, the two parameters are clearly correlated for each source, there is evidence for a turnoff in the correlation above a characteristic frequency, different for different sources. We discuss the possible nature of this turnoff.

Hard X-ray states and radio emission in GRS 1915+105

We have compared simultaneous Ryle Telescope radio and Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer X-ray observations of the galactic microquasar GRS 1915+105, using the classification of the X-ray behaviour in terms of three states as previously established. We find a strong (one-to-one) relation between radio oscillation events and series of spectrally hard states in the X-ray light curves, if the hard states are longer than ~100s and are "well separated" from each other. In all other cases the source either shows a low-level or a high level radio emission, but no radio oscillation events. During intervals when the source stays in the hard spectral state for periods of days to months, the radio behaviour is quite different; during some of these intervals a quasi-continuous jet is formed with an almost flat synchrotron spectrum extending to at least the near-infrared. Based on the similarities between the oscillation profiles at different wavelengths, we suggest a scenario which can explain most of the complex X-ray : radio behaviour of GRS 1915+105. We compare this behaviour with that of other black hole sources and challenge previous reports of a relation between spectrally soft X-ray states and the radio emission.

The disc-jet connection in GRS 1915+105

We have compared simultaneous Ryle Telescope (RT) radio and Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) X-ray observations of the galactic microquasar GRS 1915+105. We find that radio emission, and therefore also the radio jet, requires the presence of long (~100s), hard dips in the X-ray light curve which seem to have a one-to-one relation with the radio events: each hard dip produces a new radio "flare". We discuss the characteristic features of the connection between the hard X-ray states and the radio emission.

Disk mass accretion rate and infrared flares in GRS 1915+105

We have analyzed in detail a set of Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) observations of the galactic microquasar GRS 1915+105 corresponding to times when quasi-periodic oscillations in the infrared have been reported. From time-resolved spectral analysis, we have estimated the mass accretion rate through the (variable) inner edge of the accretion disk. We compare this accretion rate to an estimate of the mass/energy outflow rate in the jet. We discuss the possible implications of these results in terms of disk-instability and jet ejection, and in particular note an apparent anti-correlation between the accretion and ejection rates, implying that the gas expelled in the jet must leave the accretion disk before reaching its innermost radius.
