MEG Upgrade Proposal

We propose the continuation of the MEG experiment to search for the charged lepton flavour violating decay (cLFV) μ\to e γ, based on an upgrade of the experiment, which aims for a sensitivity enhancement of one order of magnitude compared to the final MEG result, down to the $6 \times 10^{-14}$ level. The key features of this new MEG upgrade are an increased rate capability of all detectors to enable running at the intensity frontier and improved energy, angular and timing resolutions, for both the positron and photon arms of the detector. On the positron-side a new low-mass, single volume, high granularity tracker is envisaged, in combination with a new highly segmented, fast timing counter array, to track positron from a thinner stopping target. The photon-arm, with the largest liquid xenon (LXe) detector in the world, totalling 900 l, will also be improved by increasing the granularity at the incident face, by replacing the current photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) with a larger number of smaller photosensors and optimizing the photosensor layout also on the lateral faces. A new DAQ scheme involving the implementation of a new combined readout board capable of integrating the diverse functions of digitization, trigger capability and splitter functionality into one condensed unit, is also under development. We describe here the status of the MEG experiment, the scientific merits of the upgrade and the experimental methods we plan to use.

Improvement of xenon purification system using a combination of a pulse tube refrigerator and a coaxial heat exchanger

We have developed a compact cryogenic system with a pulse tube refrigerator and a coaxial heat exchanger. This liquefaction-purification system not only saves the cooling power used to reach high gaseous recirculation rate, but also reduces the impurity level with high speed. The heat exchanger operates with an efficiency of 99%, which indicates the possibility for fast xenon gas recirculation in a highpressurized large-scale xenon storage with much less thermal losses.

New limit on the lepton-flavour violating decay mu -> e gamma

We present a new result based on an analysis of the data collected by the MEG detector at the Paul Scherrer Institut in 2009 and 2010, in search of the lepton flavour violating decay mu->e gamma. The likelihood analysis of the combined data sample, which corresponds to a total of 1.8 x 10**14 muon decays, gives a 90% C.L. upper limit of 2.4 x 10**-12 on the branching ratio of the mu->e gamma decay, constituting the most stringent limit on the existence of this decay to date.

A limit for the mu -> e gamma decay from the MEG experiment

A search for the decay mu -> e gamma, performed at PSI and based on data from the initial three months of operation of the MEG experiment, yields an upper limit on the branching ratio of BR(mu -> e gamma) < 2.8 x 10**-11 (90% C.L.). This corresponds to the measurement of positrons and photons from ~ 10**14 stopped mu-decays by means of a superconducting positron spectrometer and a 900 litre liquid xenon photon detector.

The H$α$ Luminosity Function and Star Formation Rate at $z \approx 0.24$ in the Cosmos 2 Square-Degree Field

To derive a new H$α$ luminosity function and to understand the clustering properties of star-forming galaxies at $z \approx 0.24$, we have made a narrow-band imaging survey for H$α$ emitting galaxies in the HST COSMOS 2 square degree field. We used the narrow-band filter NB816 ($λ_c = 8150$ Å, $Δλ= 120$ Å) and sampled H$α$ emitters with $EW_{\rm obs}(\rm Hα+ [N\textsc{ii}]) > 12$ Åin a redshift range between $z=0.233$ and $z=0.251$ corresponding to a depth of 70 Mpc. We obtained 980 H$α$ emitting galaxies in a sky area of 5540 arcmin$^2$, corresponding to a survey volume of $3.1 \times 10^4 {\rm Mpc^3}$. We derive a H$α$ luminosity function with a best-fit Schechter function parameter set of $α= -1.35^{+0.11}_{-0.13}$, $\logϕ_* = -2.65^{+0.27}_{-0.38}$, and $\log L_* ({\rm erg s^{-1}}) = 41.94^{+0.38}_{-0.23}$. The H$α$ luminosity density is $2.7^{+0.7}_{-0.6} \times 10^{39}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-3}$. After subtracting the AGN contribution (15 %) to the H$α$ luminosity density, the star formation rate density is evaluated as $1.8^{+0.7}_{-0.4} \times 10^{-2}$ $M_{\sun}$ yr$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-3}$. The angular two-point correlation function of H$α$ emitting galaxies of $\log L({\rm Hα}) > 39.8$ is well fit by a power law form of $w(θ) = 0.013^{+0.002}_{-0.001} θ^{-0.88 \pm 0.03}$, corresponding to the correlation function of $ξ(r) = (r/1.9{\rm Mpc})^{-1.88}$. We also find that the H$α$ emitters with higher H$α$ luminosity are more strongly clustered than those with lower luminosity.

Nuclear-matter modification of decay widths in the $ϕ\to e^{+}e^{-}$ and $ϕ\to K^{+}K^{-}$ channels

The invariant mass spectra of $ϕ\to K^{+}K^{-}$ are measured in 12 GeV $p+A$ reactions in order to search for the in-medium modification of $ϕ$ mesons. The observed $K^{+}K^{-}$ spectra are well reproduced by the relativistic Breit-Wigner function with a combinatorial background shape in three $βγ$ regions between 1.0 and 3.5. The nuclear mass-number dependence of the yields of the $K^{+}K^{-}$ decay channel is compared to the simultaneously measured $e^{+}e^{-}$ decay channel for carbon and copper targets. We parameterize the production yields as $σ(A) = σ_0 \times A^α$ and obtain $α_{ϕ\to K^+K^-} - α_{ϕ\to e^+e^-}$ to be 0.14 $\pm$ 0.12. Limits are obtained for the partial decay widths of $ϕ$ mesons in nuclear matter.

The [OII]3727 Luminosity function and Star Formation Rate at z~1.2 in the COSMOS 2 Square-degree Field and the Subaru Deep Field

We have carried out a wide-field imaging survey for [OII]3727 emitting galaxies at z~1.2 in the HST COSMOS 2 square degree field using the Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope. The survey covers a sky area of 6700 arcmin^2 in the COSMOS field, and a redshift range between 1.17 and 1.20 (Delta_z = 0.03), corresponding to a survey volume of 5.56*10^5 Mpc^3. We obtain a sample of 3176 [OII] emitting galaxies with observed emission-line equivalent widths greater than 26 AA. Since our survey tends to sample brighter [OII]3727 emitting galaxies, we also analyze a sample of fainter [OII]3727 emitting galaxies found in the Subaru Deep Field (SDF). We find an extinction-corrected [OII] luminosity density of 10^{40.35^+0.08_-0.06} ergs s^-1 Mpc-3, corresponding to star formation rate density of 0.32^+0.06_-0.04 M_sun yr-1 Mpc^-3 in the COSMOS field at z~1.2. This is the largest survey for [OII]3727 emitters beyond z=1 currently available.

Evidence for in-medium modification of the $ϕ$ meson at normal nuclear density

Invariant mass spectra of e+e- pairs have been measured in 12 GeV p+A reactions to detect possible in-medium modification of vector mesons. Copper and carbon targets are used to study the nuclear-size dependence of e+e- invariant mass distributions. A significant excess on the low-mass side of the phi meson peak is observed in the low beta gamma (=beta/sqrt(1-beta^2)) region of phi mesons (beta gamma < 1.25) with copper targets. However, in the high beta gamma region (beta gamma > 1.25), spectral shapes of phi mesons are well described by the Breit-Wigner shape when experimental effects are considered. Thus, in addition to our earlier publication on rho / omega modification, this study has experimentally verified vector meson mass modification at normal nuclear density.

Nuclear mass number dependence of inclusive production of omega and phi mesons in 12 GeV p + A collisions

The inclusive production of omega and phi mesons is studied in the backward region of the interaction of 12 GeV protons with polyethylene, carbon, and copper targets. The mesons are measured in e^+ e^- decay channels. The production cross sections of the mesons are presented as functions of rapidity y and transverse momentum p_T. The nuclear mass number dependences (A dependences) are found to be A^{0.710 +/- 0.021(stat) +/- 0.037(syst)} for omega mesons and A^{0.937 +/- 0.049(stat) +/- 0.018(syst)} for phi mesons in the region of 0.9 < y < 1.7 and p_T < 0.75 GeV/c.

Experimental Signature of Medium Modifications for rho and omega Mesons in the 12 GeV p + A Reactions

The invariant mass spectra of e+e- pairs produced in 12-GeV proton-induced nuclear reactions are measured at the KEK Proton-Synchrotron. On the low-mass side of the omega meson peak, a significant enhancement over the known hadronic sources has been observed. The mass spectra, including the excess, are well reproduced by a model that takes into account the density dependence of the vector meson mass modification, as theoretically predicted.

Measurement of the Xi-p Scattering Cross Sections at Low Energy

In this paper we report cross-section measurements for $Ξ^-p$ elastic and inelastic scatterings at low energy using a scintillating fiber active target. Upper limit on the total cross-section for the elastic scattering was found to be 24 mb at 90% confidence level, and the total cross section for the $Ξ^-p\toΛΛ$ reaction was found to be $4.3^{+6.3}_{-2.7}$ mb. We compare the results with currently competing theoretical estimates.

Absorption of Scintillation Light in a 100 $\ell$ Liquid Xenon$γ$ Ray Detector and Expected Detector Performance

An 800L liquid xenon scintillation $γ$ ray detector is being developed for the MEG experiment which will search for $μ^+\to\mathrm{e}^+γ$ decay at the Paul Scherrer Institut. Absorption of scintillation light of xenon by impurities might possibly limit the performance of such a detector. We used a 100L prototype with an active volume of 372x372x496 mm$^3$ to study the scintillation light absorption. We have developed a method to evaluate the light absorption, separately from elastic scattering of light, by measuring cosmic rays and $α$ sources. By using a suitable purification technique, an absorption length longer than 100 cm has been achieved. The effects of the light absorption on the energy resolution are estimated by Monte Carlo simulation.

Liquid Xe scintillation calorimetry and Xe optical properties

The optical properties of LXe in the vacuum ultra violet (VUV), determining the performance of a scintillation calorimeter, are discussed in detail. The available data, measured in a wider spectral region from visible to UV light, and in a large range of Xe densities, from gas to liquid, are examined. It is shown that this information can be used for deriving the LXe optical properties in the VUV. A comparison is made with the few direct measurements in LXe for VUV light resulting from the LXe excitation by ionizing particles. A useful relation is obtained which connects the Rayleigh scattering length to the refractive index in LXe.

Observation of $ρ/ ω$ Meson Modification in Nuclear Matter

We have measured invariant mass spectra of electron-positron pairs in the target rapidity region of 12GeV p+A reactions. We have observed a significant difference in the mass spectra below the $ω$ meson between p+C and p+Cu interactions. The difference is interpreted as a signature of the $ρ/ω$ modification at normal nuclear-matter density.
