Photonuclear Cross Sections for the $^{197}$Au($\gamma$,pn)$^{195m}$Pt Reaction Near Threshold

Platinum radioisotopes are of growing interest for targeted cancer therapy and diagnostic imaging because their decay delivers highly localized radiation doses in tissue, herewith enabling precise DNA damage through Auger-electron emission. Developing production technologies that provide platinum isotopes with high specific activity is therefore essential, and photonuclear reactions on stable nuclei offer a viable accelerator-based route when supported by reliable cross-section data. We report photonuclear cross-section measurements for the $^{197}$Au($\gamma$,pn)$^{195m}$Pt reaction at incident $\gamma$-ray energies of 27, 29, and 31 MeV using the activation method. The measurements were performed by irradiating a stack of concentric-ring gold targets with a quasi-monoenergetic $\gamma$-ray beam provided by the High Intensity Gamma-ray Source (HI$\gamma$S). The induced $^{195m}$Pt activity was quantified using off-line $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy. These data provide the first experimental constraints on the $^{197}$Au($\gamma$,pn)$^{195m}$Pt cross section in the near-threshold region. The measured excitation function is compared with PHITS and TALYS calculations and indicates that the reaction becomes measurable only near 30 MeV, with substantially higher bremsstrahlung end-point energies required for practically meaningful production.

Photo-nuclear cross sections on $^{197}$Au, an update on the gold standard

A method was developed for measuring photonuclear reactions concurrently at several discrete photon beam energies on a stack of different target materials via a single irradiation. Concentric ring targets of the materials (in order from front to back targets: Au, TiO$_2$, Zn, Os, and Au) were irradiated at the High Intensity Gamma-ray Source (HI$\gamma$S). As a proof of principle, we report the result of the cross section measurements from the front Au target. The excitation functions of the $^{197}$Au($\gamma$,n)$^{196}$Au and $^{197}$Au($\gamma$,3n)$^{194}$Au reactions were determined in the incident photon energy range of 13-31 MeV using quasi-monoenergetic photon beams provided at HI$\gamma$S. The cross sections of the combined ground state (2$^{-}$) and short-lived first isomeric state (m1, 5$^{+}$), and of the second isomeric state (m2, 12$^{-}$) in the $^{196}$Au production are obtained separately by subtracting the $\gamma$ rays from the internal conversion of the second isomeric state. The excitation function of the second isomeric state via the photon-induced reaction $^{197}$Au($\gamma$,n)$^{196m2}$Au was measured for the first time. By using the activation method rather than direct neutron counting, the exclusive cross sections for the ($\gamma$,n) and ($\gamma$,3n) reactions were determined. Comparing the yields from the front and back gold targets validates our ability to simulate the effect of photon scattering in the target stack and provides a method for assessing the systematic uncertainty of our technique.

Proton Compton Scattering from Linearly Polarized Gamma Rays

Differential cross sections for Compton scattering from the proton have been measured at scattering angles of $55^\circ$, $90^\circ$, and $125^\circ$ in the laboratory frame using quasimonoenergetic linearly (circularly) polarized photon beams with a weighted mean energy value of 83.4\,MeV (81.3\,MeV). These measurements were performed at the High Intensity Gamma-Ray Source facility at the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory. The results are compared to previous measurements and are interpreted in the chiral effective field theory framework to extract the electromagnetic dipole polarizabilities of the proton, which gives $α_{E1}^p = 13.8\pm1.2_{\rm stat}\pm0.1_{\rm BSR}\pm0.3_{\rm theo}, β_{M1}^p = 0.2\mp1.2_{\rm stat}\pm0.1_{\rm BSR}\mp0.3_{\rm theo}$ in units of 10$^{-4}$\, fm$^3$.

Compton scattering from $^4$He at the TUNL HI$γ$S facility

Differential cross sections for elastic Compton scattering from $^4$He have been measured with high statistical precision at the High Intensity $γ$-ray Source at laboratory scattering angles of $55^\circ$, $90^\circ$, and $125^\circ$ using a quasi-monoenergetic photon beam with a weighted mean energy value of $81.3$ MeV. The results are compared to previous measurements and similar fore-aft asymmetry in the angular distribution of the differential cross sections is observed. This experimental work is expected to strongly motivate the development of effective-field-theory calculations of Compton scattering from $^4$He to fully interpret the data.

A Segmented, Enriched N-type Germanium Detector for Neutrinoless Double Beta-Decay Experiments

We present data characterizing the performance of the first segmented, N-type Ge detector, isotopically enriched to 85% $^{76}$Ge. This detector, based on the Ortec PT6x2 design and referred to as SEGA (Segmented, Enriched Germanium Assembly), was developed as a possible prototype for neutrinoless double beta-decay measurements by the {\sc Majorana} collaboration. We present some of the general characteristics (including bias potential, efficiency, leakage current, and integral cross-talk) for this detector in its temporary cryostat. We also present an analysis of the resolution of the detector, and demonstrate that for all but two segments there is at least one channel that reaches the {\sc Majorana} resolution goal below 4 keV FWHM at 2039 keV, and all channels are below 4.5 keV FWHM.

Low-Energy Photodisintegration of the Deuteron and Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis

The photon analyzing power for the photodisintegration of the deuteron was measured for seven gamma-ray energies between 2.39 and 4.05 MeV using the linearly polarized gamma-ray beam of the High-Intensity Gamma-ray Source at the Duke Free-Electron Laser Laboratory. The data provide a stringent test of theoretical calculations for the inverse reaction, the neutron-proton radiative capture reaction at energies important for Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis. Our data are in excellent agreement with potential model and effective field theory calculations. Therefore, the uncertainty in the baryon density obtained from Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis can be reduced at least by 20%.

$O(αα_s^2)$ correction to the electroweak $ρ$ parameter

The three-loop QCD contributions to the vacuum polarization functions of the $Z$ and $W$ bosons at zero momentum are calculated. The top quark is considered to be massive and the other quarks massless. Using these results, we calculate the correction to the electroweak $ρ$ parameter. All computations are done in the framework of dimensional regularization as well as regularization by dimensional reduction. We use recurrence relations obtained by the method of integration by parts to reduce all integrals to a small set of master integrals. A comparison of the two-loop and three-loop QCD corrections to the $ρ$ parameter is performed.
