Characteristic times for thermal wave packets in dissipative Bohmian mechanics: the parabolic repeller

Thermal wave packets are used to analyze transmission probabilities and characteristic times through a parabolic repeller within the dissipative Bohmian mechanics. Thermal arrival, dwelling, transmission and reflection times are defined and calculated by using a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution for the initial velocities of the incident particles. The dissipation is considered within the Caldirola-Kanai and Kostin approaches where a linear and nonlinear framework is used, respectively. The initial parameters are chosen to have only a dissipative tunnelling dynamics at zero temperature; at any nonzero temperature, transmission proceeds not only via tunnelling.

Quantum surface diffusion in Bohmian Mechanics

Surface diffusion of small adsorbates is analyzed in terms of the so-called intermediate scattering function and dynamic structure factor, observables in experiments using the well-known quasielastic Helium atom scattering and Helium spin echo techniques. The linear theory used is an extension of the neutron scattering due to van Hove and considers the time evolution of the position of the adsorbates in the surface. This approach allows us to use a stochastic trajectory description following the classical, quantum and Bohmian frameworks. Three regimes of motion are clearly identified in the diffusion process: ballistic, Brownian and intermediate which are well characterized, for the first two regimes, through the mean square displacements and Einstein relation for the diffusion constant. The Langevin formalism is used by considering Ohmic friction, moderate surface temperatures and small coverages. In the Bohmian framework, the starting point is the so-called Schrödinger-Langevin equation which is a nonlinear, logarithmic differential equation. By assuming a Gaussian function for the probability density, the corresponding quantum stochastic trajectories are given by a dressing scheme consisting of a classical stochastic trajectory of the center of the Gaussian wave packet, issued from solving the Langevin equation (particle property), plus the time evolution of its width governed by the damped Pinney differential equation (wave property). The velocity autocorrelation function is the same as the classical one when the initial spread rate is assumed to be zero. If not, in the diffusion regime, the Brownian-Bohmian motion shows a weak anomalous diffusion.

Time averaging of weak values - consequences for time-energy and coordinate-momentum uncertainty

Using the quantum transition path time probability distribution we show that time averaging of weak values leads to unexpected results. We prove a weak value time energy uncertainty principle and time energy commutation relation. We also find that time averaging allows one to predict in advance the momentum of a particle at a post selected point in space with accuracy greater than the limit of $\hbar /2$ as dictated by the uncertainty principle. This comes at a cost - it is not possible at the same time to predict when the particle will arrive at the post selected point. A specific example is provided for one dimensional scattering from a square barrier.

Dissipative tunneling by means of scaled trajectories

Dissipative quantum tunnelling through an inverted parabolic barrier is considered in the presence of an electric field. A Schrödinger-Langevin or Kostin quantum classical transition wave equation is used and applied resulting in a scaled differential equation of motion. A Gaussian wave packet solution to the resulting scaled Kostin nonlinear equation is assumed and compared to the same solution for the scaled linear Caldirola-Kanai equation. The resulting scaled trajectories are obtained at different dynamical regimes and friction cases, showing the gradual decoherence process in this open dynamics. Theoretical results show that the transmission probabilities are always higher in the Kostin approach than in the Caldirola-Kanai approach in the presence or not of an external electric field. This discrepancy should be understood due to the presence of an environment since the corresponding open dynamics should be governed by nonlinear quantum equations, whereas the second approach is issued from an effective Hamiltonian within a linear theory.

A Helium-Surface Interaction Potential of Bi$_2$Te$_3$(111) from Ultrahigh-Resolution Spin-Echo Measurements

We have determined an atom-surface interaction potential for the He$-$Bi$_2$Te$_3$(111) system by analysing ultrahigh resolution measurements of selective adsorption resonances. The experimental measurements were obtained using $^3$He spin-echo spectrometry. Following an initial free-particle model analysis, we use elastic close-coupling calculations to obtain a three-dimensional potential. The three-dimensional potential is then further refined based on the experimental data set, giving rise to an optimised potential which fully reproduces the experimental data. Based on this analysis, the He$-$Bi$_2$Te$_3$(111) interaction potential can be described by a corrugated Morse potential with a well depth $D=(6.22\pm0.05)~\mathrm{meV}$, a stiffness $κ=(0.92\pm0.01)~\mathrmÅ^{-1}$ and a surface electronic corrugation of $(9.6\pm0.2)$% of the lattice constant. The improved uncertainties of the atom-surface interaction potential should also enable the use in inelastic close-coupled calculations in order to eventually study the temperature dependence and the line width of selective adsorption resonances.

Quantum-classical transition in dissipative systems through scaled trajectories

A nonlinear quantum-classical transition wave equation is proposed for dissipative systems within the Caldirola-Kanai model. Equivalence of this transition equation to a scaled Schrödinger equation is proved. The dissipative dynamics is then studied in terms of what we call scaled trajectories following the standard procedure used in Bohmian mechanics. These trajectories depend on a continuous parameter allowing us a smooth transition from Bohmian to classical trajectories. Arrival times and actual momentum distribution functions are also analyzed. The propagation of a Gaussian wave packet in a viscid medium under the presence of constant, linear and harmonic potentials is studied. The gradual decoherence process and localization are easily visualized and understood within this theoretical framework.

Quantum thermodynamics in chiral two--level systems. The quantum stochastic resonance

A Langevin canonical framework for a chiral two-level system coupled to a bath of harmonic oscillators is used within a coupling scheme different from the well-known spin-boson model. From this stochastic dynamics, within the Markovian regime and Ohmic friction, some standard quantum thermodynamics functions such as the energy average and heat capacity can be extracted. In particular, special emphasis is put on the so-called quantum stochastic resonance which is a cooperative effect of friction, noise and periodic driving occurring in a bistable system.

Quantum-classical comparison: arrival times and statistics

Classical and quantum scattering of a non-Gaussian wave packet by a rectangular barrier is studied in terms of arrival times to a given detector location. A classical wave equation, proposed by N. Rosen [{\it{Am. J. Phys.}} {\bf 32} (1964) 377], is used to study the corresponding classical dynamics. Mean arrival times are then computed and compared for different values of initial wave packet parameters and barrier width. The agreement is improved in the large mass limit as one expects. A short comment on the possibility of generalization of Rosen's proposal to a two-body system is given. Differences in distributions of particles obeying different statistics are studied by considering a system composed of two free particles.

A Langevin canonical approach to the dynamics of chiral two level systems. Thermal averages and heat capacity

A Langevin canonical framework for a chiral two--level system coupled to a bath of harmonic oscillators is developed within a coupling scheme different to the well known spin-boson model. Thermal equilibrium values are reached at asymptotic times by solving the corresponding set of non--linear coupled equations in a Markovian regime. In particular, phase difference thermal values (or, equivalently, the so--called coherence factor) and heat capacity through energy fluctuations are obtained and discussed in terms of tunneling rates and asymmetries.

On non-dissipative and dissipative qubit manifolds

The trajectories of a qubit dynamics over the two-sphere are shown to be geodesics of certain Riemannian or physically-sound Lorentzian manifolds, both in the non-dissipative and dissipative formalisms, when using action-angle variables. Several aspects of the geometry and topology of these manifolds (qubit manifolds) have been studied for some special physical cases.

Dissipative and stochastic geometric phase of a qubit within a canonical Langevin framework

Dissipative and stochastic effects in the geometric phase of a qubit are taken into account using a geometrical description of the corresponding open--system dynamics within a canonical Langevin framework based on a Caldeira--Leggett like Hamiltonian. By extending the Hopf fibration $S^{3}\to S^{2}$ to include such effects, the exact geometric phase for a dissipative qubit is obtained, whereas numerical calculations are used to include finite temperature effects on it.

Analysis of a three-component model phase diagram by Catastrophe Theory: Potentials with two Order Parameters

In this work we classify the singularities obtained from the Gibbs potential of a lattice gas model with three components, two order parameters and five control parameters applying the general theorems provided by Catastrophe Theory. In particular, we clearly establish the existence of Landau potentials in two variables or, in other words, corank 2 canonical forms that are associated to the hyperbolic umbilic, D_{+4}, its dual the elliptic umbilic, D_{-4}, and the parabolic umbilic, D_5, catastrophes. The transversality of the potential with two order parameters is explicitely shown for each case. Thus we complete the Catastrophe Theory analysis of the three-component lattice model, initiated in a previous paper.

Analysis of a three-component model phase diagram by Catastrophe Theory

We analyze the thermodynamical potential of a lattice gas model with three components and five parameters using the methods of Catastrophe Theory. We find the highest singularity, which has codimension five, and establish its transversality. Hence the corresponding seven-degree Landau potential, the canonical form Wigwam or $A_6$, constitutes the adequate starting point to study the overall phase diagram of this model.
