The Fullerene-like Structure of Superheavy Element Z=120 (Greinerium)-a tribute to Walter Greiner

We review the basic ideas and some theoretical models behind the concept of fullerene-like structures made of $α$-particles. The possibility of such a peculiar nuclear shape developing in a double magic superheavy nucleus with $Z$=120 was mentioned for the first time in the literature by Walter Greiner and then constantly defended by him. We provide estimates of the energy of such metastable states within the liquid-drop model. In the second part of this paper we discuss a simple model rooted in the nontopological soliton model consisting of a complex scalar field describing a finite system of $α$ bosons with non-linear self-interactions coupled to the electromagnetic field. We demonstrate that this model predicts density depletion in the central region of a soliton-like structure for a range of model parameters.

Deep sub-barrier fusion reactions of the light nuclei $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O

Fusion reactions relevant for the carbon and oxygen burning cycles in highly evolved stars are investigated in a standard approach to fusion. We employ the double folding method to evaluate the ion-ion interactions with Gogny-D1 and M3Y-Paris $n-n$ effective forces. The cross-section evaluation do not indicate a possible hindrance even at the lowest energies under the barrier. Reaction rates at temperatures relevant for the stellar processes are estimated and compared to the traditional and modern extrapolation formulas.

Elasticity of nuclear medium as a principal macrodynamical promoter of electric dipole pygmy resonance

Motivated by arguments of the nuclear core-layer model formulated in [S.I. Bastrukov, J.A. Maruhn, Z.Phys. A 335 (1990) 139], the macroscopic excitation mechanism of electric pygmy dipole resonance (PDR) is considered as owing its origin to perturbation-induced effective decomposition of nucleus into two spherical domains - undisturbed inner region treated as static core and dynamical layer undergoing elastic shear vibrations. The focus is placed on the imprinted in the core-layer model mechanism of emergence of the low-energy dipole electric resonant excitation as Goldstone soft mode of translation layer-against-core oscillations. To accentuate this attitude we regain the obtained in the above paper spectral equation for the frequency of spheroidal elastic vibrations trapped in the finite-depth layer, but by working from canonical equation of elastic dynamics of continuous medium. The obtained analytic equations for the frequency of dipole vibrational state in question and its excitation strength exhibit fundamental character of this soft dipole mode of nuclear resonant response.

Spheroidal and torsional modes of quasistatic shear oscillations in the solid globe models of nuclear physics and pulsar astrophysics

The past three decades of investigation on nuclear physics and pulsar astrophysics have seen gradual recognition that elastodynamic approach to the continuum mechanics of nuclear matter provides proper account of macroscopic motions of degenerate Fermi-matter constituting interior of the nuclear material objects, the densest of all known today. This paper focuses on one theoretical issue of this development which is concerned with oscillatory behavior of a viscoelastic solid globe in the regime of quasistatic, force-free, non-compressional oscillations less investigated in the literature compared to oscillations in the regime of standing shear waves. We show that in this case the problem of computing frequency and lifetime of spheroidal and torsional modes of non-radial shear vibrations damped by viscosity can be unambiguously resolved by working from the energy balance equation and taking advantage of the Rayleigh's variational method. The efficiency of this method is demonstrated by solid globe models of nuclear physics and pulsar astrophysics dealing with oscillations of a spherical mass of a viscoelastic Fermi-solid with homogeneous and non-homogeneous profiles of the bulk density, the shear modulus, and the shear viscosity.

Signature of Shallow Potentials in Deep Sub-barrier Fusion Reactions

We extend a recent study that explained the steep falloff in the fusion cross section at energies far below the Coulomb barrier for the symmetric dinuclear system 64Ni+64Ni to another symmetric system, 58Ni+58Ni, and the asymmetric system 64Ni+100Mo. In this scheme the very sensitive dependence of the internal part of the nuclear potential on the nuclear equation of state determines a reduction of the classically allowed region for overlapping configurations and consequently a decrease in the fusion cross sections at bombarding energies far below the barrier. Within the coupled-channels method, including couplings to the low-lying 2+ and 3- states in both target and projectile as well as mutual and two-phonon excitations of these states, we calculate and compare with the experimental fusion cross sections, S-factors, and logarithmic derivatives for the above mentioned systems and find good agreement with the data even at the lowest energies. We predict, in particular, a distinct double peaking in the S-factor for the far subbarrier fusion of 58Ni+58Ni which should be tested experimentally.

Hindrance of heavy-ion fusion due to nuclear incompressibility

We propose a new mechanism to explain the unexpected steep falloff of fusion cross sections at energies far below the Coulomb barrier. The saturation properties of nuclear matter are causing a hindrance to large overlap of the reacting nuclei and consequently a sensitive change of the nuclear potential inside the barrier. We report in this letter a good agreement with the data of coupled-channels calculation for the {64}Ni+{64}Ni combination using the double-folding potential with M3Y-Reid effective N-N forces supplemented with a repulsive core that reproduces the nuclear incompressibility for total overlap.

Molecular Collective Vibrations in the Ternary Neutronless Fission of $^{252}$Cf

Based on a recent experimental finding which may suggest the existence of a tri-nuclear molecular structure before the cold ternary fragmentation of $^{252}$Cf takes place, we solved the eigenvalue problem of a certain class of vibrations which are very likely to occur in these molecules. These oscillations are the result of the joined action of rotations of the heavier fragments and the transversal vibrations of the lighter spherical cluster with respect to the fission axis. In the calculation of the interaction between the heavier fragments we took into account higher multipole deformations, including the hexadecupole one, and introduced a repulsive nuclear part to insure the creation of a potential pocket in which a few molecular states can be accommodated. The possibility to observe the de-excitation of such states is discussed in connection with the molecular life-time.

Collective Modes of Tri-Nuclear Molecules

A geometrical model for tri-nuclear molecules is presented. An analytical solution is obtained provided the nuclei, which are taken to be prolately deformed, are connected in line to each other. Furthermore, the tri-nuclear molecule is composed of two heavy and one light cluster, the later sandwiched between the two heavy clusters. A basis is constructed in which Hamiltonians of more general configurations can be diagonalized. In the calculation of the interaction between the clusters higher multipole deformations are taken into account, including the hexadecupole one. A repulsive nuclear core is introduced in the potential in order to insure a quasi-stable configuration of the system. The model is applied to three nuclear molecules, namely $^{96}$Sr + $^{10}$Be + $^{146}$Ba, $^{108}$Mo + $^{10}$Be + $^{134}$Te and $^{112}$Ru + $^{10}$Be + $^{130}$Sn.

Angular Momenta of Even-Even Fragments in the Neutronless Fission of $^{252}$Cf

The recent advent of experimental techniques in which the dynamical characteristics of fission fragments are determined more accurately, prompted us to investigate the angular momentum acquired by fragments in a model which describes the cold(neutronless) fission of $^{252}$Cf as the decay of a giant nuclear molecule. The molecular configuration is a consequence of the interplay between the attractive nuclear part and the repulsive Coulomb+nuclear forces. The basic ideea of the present approach is to separate the radial(fission) modes describing the decay of the molecule from the modes associated to transversal vibrations(bending) of the fragments. The distance between the centers of the two fragments is fixed by the requirement that the energy released in the fission reaction $Q$, equals the sum of quantum zero-energies of radial and transversal modes and the total excitation energy $E^*$. Using a semiclassical coupled channel formalism we computed the additional angular momenta acquired by the fragments during their post-scission motion, and found that the Coulomb excitation accounts for less than 10% of the final spins.

Shift of the 2$^+_1$ state of $^{10}$Be in the ternary cold fission of $^{252}$Cf

Recent experimental data indicate that in the ternary cold fission of $^{252}$Cf the energy of the first excited state of the accompanying light cluster $^{10}$Be is decreased by an amount ranging between $\approx$ 6 and 26 keV. A model is proposed to calculate the shift of the vibrational 2$^+_1$ state in $^{10}$Be when its heavy companions are the even-even nuclei $^{146}$Ba and $^{96}$Sr. The stiffness parameters of the $β$-vibrations are calculated within the self-consistent Hartree-Fock method with BCS pairing correlations taken into account, and its change is determined by the interaction of the light cluster with the heavy fragments. The results are pointing to a dependence of the shift magnitude and signature on the relative distance between the three clusters and their mutual orientation. Eventually it is the anharmonic perturbation of the spherical vibrator which is responsible for obtaining a negative energy shift of the 2$^+_1$ state.

Dual Killing-Yano symmetry and multipole moments in electromagnetism and mechanics of continua

In this work we introduce the Killing-Yano symmetry on the phase space and we investigate the symplectic structure on the space of Killing-Yano tensors. We perform the detailed analyze of the $n$-dimensional flat space and the Riemaniann manifolds with constant scalar curvature. We investigate the form of some multipole tensors, which arise in the expansion of a system of charges and currents, in terms of second-order Killing-Yano tensors in the phase space of classical mechanics. We find some relations between these tensors and the generators of dynamical symmetries like the angular momentum, the mass-inertia tensor, the conformal operator and the momentum conjugate Runge-Lenz vector.

Semi-Microscopical Description of the Scission Configuration in the Cold Fission of $^{252}$Cf

The cold(neutronless) fission of $^{252}$Cf is studied in the frame of a molecular model in which the scission configuration is described by two aligned fragments interacting by means of Coulomb (+ nuclear) forces. The study is carried out for different distances between the fragments tips and excitation energies. For a given deformation, the fragment's total energy is computed via the constrained Hartree-Fock + BCS formalism. The total excitation energy present in the fragments is supposed to contribute only to the fragments deformation and the asymptotic value of the kinetic energy is equated to the inter-fragment potential at scission. These two constraints yield not more than one or two fission channels for a fixed tip distance and excitation energy. Discarding those fission channels corresponding to a disequilibrated sharing of the excitation energy between the two fragments, we were able to establish the most likely scission configurations for a specified excitation energy.

Quantum tunneling with dissipation in smoothly joined parabolic potential

This paper is devoted to the study of quantum dissipation in cluster decay phenomena in the frame of the Lindblad approach to quantum open systems. The tunneling of a metastable state across a piecewise quadratic potential is envisaged for two cases : one and two harmonic wells smoothly joined to an inverted parabola which simulates the barrier. The width and depth of the second harmonic oscillator well was varied over a wide range of values in order to encompass particular cases of tunneling such as the double well potential and the cluster decay. The evolution of the averages and covariances of the quantum sub-system is studied in both under- and overdamped regimes. For a gaussian intial wave-packet we compute the tunneling probability for different values of the friction coefficient and fixed values of the diffusion coefficients.

Nuclear Deformation Effects in the Cluster Radioactivity

We investigate the influence of the nuclear deformation on the decay rates of some cluster emission processes. The interaction between the daughter and the cluster is given by a double folding potential including quadrupole and hexadecupole deformed densities of both fragments. The nuclear part of the nucleus-nucleus interaction is density dependent and at small distances a repulsive core in the potential will occur. In the frame of the WKB-approximation the assault frequency of the cluster will depend on the geometric properties of the potential pocket whereas the penetrability will be sensitive to changes in the barrier location. The results obtained in this paper point out that various combinations of cluster and daughter deformations may account for the measured values of the decay rate.T he decay rather are however more sensitive to the changes in the daughter deformation due to the large mass asymmetry of the process.

Proton Decay from Excited States in Spherical Nuclei

Based on a single particle model which describes the time evolution of the wave function during tunneling across a one dimensional potential barrier we study the proton decay of $^{208}$Pb from excited states with non-vanishing angular momentum $\ell$. Several quantities of interest in this process like the decay rate $λ$, the period of oscillation $T_{osc}$, the transient time $t_{tr}$, the tunneling time $t_{tun}$ and the average value of the proton packet position $ r_{av} $ are computed and compared with the WKB results.

Neutronless $^{10}$be-Accompanied Ternary Fission of $^{252}$Cf}

A new type of decay corresponding to the neutronless $^{10}$Be-accompanied fragmentation of $^{252}$Cf is studied. We employ a cluster model similar to the model used for the description of cluster radioactivity. No preformation factors were considered. The ternary relative isotopic yields were calculated as the ratio of the penetrability of a given ternary fragmentation over the sum of penetrabilities of all possible ternary neutronless fragmentations. The corresponding barriers between the light and heavy fragment and between the $^{10}$Be cluster and the two heavier fragments were computed with the help of a double folding potential generated by M3Y-$NN$ effective interaction and realistic fragment ground state deformations. Also, we studied the influence of the fragment excitation energies on the yields, by including the level densities and the $β$-stretching of the fragments. The new phenomenon could be experimentally observed by the triple gamma coincidence technique between the fragments and $^{10}$Be.

Role of Fragment Higher Static Deformations in the Cold Binary Fission of $^{252}$Cf

We study the binary cold fission of $^{252}$Cf in the frame of a cluster model where the fragments are born to their respective ground states and interact via a double-folded potential with deformation effects taken into account up to multipolarity $λ=4$. The preformation factors were neglected. In the case when the fragments are assumed to be spherical or with ground state quadrupole deformation, the $Q$-value principle dictates the occurence of a narrow region around the double magic $^{132}$Sn, like in the case of cluster radioactivity. When the hexadecupole deformation is turned on, an entire mass-region of cold fission in the range 138 - 156 for the heavy fragment arise, in agreement with the experimental observations. This fact suggests that in the above mentioned mass-region, contrary to the usual cluster radioactivity where the daughter nucleus is always a neutron/proton (or both) closed shell or nearly closed shell spherical nucleus, the clusterization mechanism seems to be strongly influenced by the hexadecupole deformations rather than the $Q$-value.

Toroidal quadrupole transitions associated to collective rotational-vibrational motions of the nucleus

In the frame of the algebraic Riemann Rotational Model one computes the longitudinal, transverse and toroidal multipoles corresponding to the excitations of low-lying levels in the ground state band of several even-even nuclei by inelastic electron scattering (e,e'). Related to these transitions a new quantity, which accounts for the deviations from the Siegert theorem, is introduced. The intimate connection between the nuclear vorticity and the dynamic toroidal quadrupole moment is underlined. Inelastic differential cross-sections calculated at backscattering angles shows the dominancy of toroidal form-factors over a broad range of momentum transfer.
