Magnetic Properties and Metastable States in Spin-Crossover Transition of Co-Fe Prussian Blue Analogues

The combination of spin transitions and magnetic ordering provides an interesting structure of phase transitions in Prussian blue analogues (PBAs). To understand the structure of stable and metastable states of Co-Fe PBA, it is necessary to clarify free energy as a function of magnetization and the fraction of the high-temperature component. Including the magnetic interaction between high-temperature states, we study the magnetic phase transition of Co-Fe PBA in addition to spin transitions. Here, we take into account the degeneracy changes due to charge transfer between Co and Fe atoms accompanying the spin transition. In this study, the charge transfer between Co and Fe atoms is explicitly taken into account and also the ferrimagnetic structure of Co-Fe PBAs is expressed in the proper way. First, we found systematic changes in the structures of stable and metastable states as functions of system parameters using mean field theory. In particular, the existence of a metastable magnetic-ordered high-temperature state is confirmed at temperatures lower than that of the hysteresis region of spin transitions. Second, we found that the magnetic interaction causes complex ordering processes of a spin transition and a magnetic phase transition. The effect of a magnetic field on the phase structure is also investigated and we found metamagnetic magnetization processes. Finally, the dynamical properties of this metastable state are studied by Monte Carlo method.

Quantum Dynamics of Spin Wave Propagation Through Domain Walls

Through numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation, we demonstrate that magnetic chains with uniaxial anisotropy support stable structures, separating ferromagnetic domains of opposite magnetization. These structures, domain walls in a quantum system, are shown to remain stable if they interact with a spin wave. We find that a domain wall transmits the longitudinal component of the spin excitations only. Our results suggests that continuous, classical spin models described by LLG equation cannot be used to describe spin wave-domain wall interaction in microscopic magnetic systems.

Non-local Control of the Kondo Effect in a Double Quantum Dot-Quantum Wire Coupled System

We have performed low-temperature transport measurements on a double quantum dot-quantum wire coupled device and demonstrated non-local control of the Kondo effect in one dot by manipulating the electronic spin states of the other. We discuss the modulation of the local density of states in the wire region due to the Fano-Kondo antiresonance, and the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida (RKKY) exchange interaction as the mechanisms responsible for the observed features.

Efficient data processing and quantum phenomena: Single-particle systems

We study the relation between the acquisition and analysis of data and quantum theory using a probabilistic and deterministic model for photon polarizers. We introduce criteria for efficient processing of data and then use these criteria to demonstrate that efficient processing of the data contained in single events is equivalent to the observation that Malus' law holds. A strictly deterministic process that also yields Malus' law is analyzed in detail. We present a performance analysis of the probabilistic and deterministic model of the photon polarizer. The latter is an adaptive dynamical system that has primitive learning capabilities. This additional feature has recently been shown to be sufficient to perform event-by-event simulations of interference phenomena, without using concepts of wave mechanics. We illustrate this by presenting results for a system of two chained Mach-Zehnder interferometers, suggesting that systems that perform efficient data processing and have learning capability are able to exhibit behavior that is usually attributed to quantum systems only.

Microscopic origin of the adiabatic change of magnetization in molecular magnets

A microscopic model of the molecular magnet V15 is used to study mechanisms for the adiabatic change of the magnetization in time-dependent magnetic fields. Effects of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, the most plausible source for the energy-level repulsions that lead to adiabatic changes of the magnetization, are studied in detail. We find that the energy-level repulsions that result from this interaction exhibit a strong dependence on the direction of the applied field. We also discuss the role of magnetic anisotropy in the molecule Mn12 -acetate.

Magnetic energy-level diagrams of high-spin (Mn$_{12}$-acetate) and low-spin (V$_{15}$) molecules

The magnetic energy-level diagrams for models of the Mn12 and V15 molecule are calculated using the Lanczos method with full orthogonalization and a Chebyshev-polynomial-based projector method. The effect of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on the appearance of energy-level repulsions and its relevance to the observation of steps in the time-dependent magnetization data is studied. We assess the usefulness of simplified models for the description of the zero-temperature magnetization dynamics.

Adiabatic Landau-Zener-Stückelberg transition with or without dissipation in low spin molecular system V15

The spin one half molecular system V15 shows no barrier against spin reversal. This makes possible direct phonon activation between the two levels. By tuning the field sweeping rate and the thermal coupling between sample and thermal reservoir we have control over the phonon-bottleneck phenomena previously reported in this system. We demonstrate adiabatic motion of molecule spins in time dependent magnetic fields and with different thermal coupling to the cryostat bath. We also discuss the origin of the zero-field tunneling splitting for a half-integer spin.

Quantum Tunneling in Half-Integer Spin Systems

Motivated by the experimental observations of resonant tunnelings in the systems with half-integer spin, such as V$_{15}$ and Mn$_4$, we study the mechanism of adiabatic change of the magnetization in systems with the time-reversal symmetry. Within the time-reversal symmetric models, effects of several types of perturbations are investigated. Although tunneling between the ground states is suppressed in a simple Kramers doublet, we show that the nonadiabatic transition governed by the Landau-Zener-Stückelberg mechanism occurs in many cases due to the additional degeneracy of the ground state. We also found more general cases where LZS mechanism can not be applied directly even the system shows a kind of adiabatic change of the magnetization.

A microscopic mechanism for rejuvenation and memory effects in spin glasses

Aging in spin glasses (and in some other systems) reveals astonishing effects of `rejuvenation and memory' upon temperature changes. In this paper, we propose microscopic mechanisms (at the scale of spin-spin interactions) which can be at the origin of such phenomena. Firstly, we recall that, in a frustrated system, the effective average interaction between two spins may take different values (possibly with opposite signs) at different temperatures. We give simple examples of such situations, which we compute exactly. Such mechanisms can explain why new ordering processes (rejuvenation) seem to take place in spin glasses when the temperature is lowered. Secondly, we emphasize the fact that inhomogeneous interactions do naturally lead to a wide distribution of relaxation times for thermally activated flips. `Memory spots' spontaneously appear, in the sense that the flipping time of some spin clusters becomes extremely long when the temperature is decreased. Such memory spots are capable of keeping the memory of previous ordering at a higher temperature while new ordering processes occur at a lower temperature. After a qualitative discussion of these mechanisms, we show in the numerical simulation of a simplified example that this may indeed work. Our conclusion is that certain chaos-like phenomena may show up spontaneously in any frustrated and inhomogeneous magnetic system, without impeding the occurrence of memory effects.

Classical Correlation-Length Exponent in Non-Universal Quantum Phase Transition of Diluted Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

Critical behavior of the quantum phase transition of a site-diluted Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice is investigated by means of the quantum Monte Carlo simulation with the continuous-imaginary-time loop algorithm. Although the staggered spin correlation function decays in a power law with the exponent definitely depending on the spin size $S$, the correlation-length exponent is classical, i.e., $ν=4/3$. This implies that the length scale characterizing the non-universal quantum phase transition is nothing but the mean size of connected spin clusters.

Local magnetic structures induced by inhomogeneities of the lattice in S=1/2 bond-alternating chains and response to time-dependent magnetic field with a random noise

We study effect of inhomogeneities of the lattice in the S=1/2 bond-alternating chain by using a quantum Monte Carlo method and an exact diagonalization method. We adopt a defect in the alternating order as the inhomogeneity and we call it `bond impurity'. Local magnetic structures induced by the bond impurities are investigated both in the ground state and at very low temperatures. The local magnetic structure can be looked on as an effective S=1/2 spin and the weakness of the interaction between the local structures causes the quasi-degenerate states in the low energy. We also investigate the force acting between bond impurities and find that the force is generally attractive. We also study the dynamical property of the local magnetic structure. While the local magnetic structure behaves as an isolated S=1/2 spin in the response to a time-dependent uniform field, it is found to be robust against the effect of a random noise applied at each site individually in the sweeping filed.

Energy Transport in the Integrable System in Contact with Various Types of Phonon Reservoirs

We study how energy transport in an integrable system is affected by the spectral densities of heat reservoirs. The model investigated here is the quantum harmonic chain whose both ends are in contact with two heat reservoirs at different temperatures. The master equation for the reduced density matrix is derived on the assumption that the reservoirs are composed of an infinite number of independent harmonic oscillators. We evaluate temperature profile and energy flux in the stationary state for the master equation and discuss how they depend on the types of spectral densities. When we attach the reservoirs of the same type of spectral density, we find that the temperature profile is independent of the types. On the other hand, when the two reservoirs have different types of spectral densities, the energy profile near the ends of the chain depends on the types. When the coupling is finite, the temperature profile near the ends shows wide variation of behavior dependent on spectral densities and temperatures of reservoirs. This dependence is discussed with the Fokker-Planck equations obtained in the classical limit.

Deceptive Apparent Nonadiabatic Magnetization Process

We discuss the effect of the thermal environment on the low-temperature response of the magnetization of uniaxial magnets to a time-dependent applied magnetic field. At sufficiently low temperatures the staircase magnetization curves observed in molecular magnets such as Mn_{12} and Fe_8 display little temperature dependence. However the changes of the magnetization at each step do not seem to be directly related to the probability for a quantum mechanical nonadiabatic transition. In order to explain this deceptive apparent nonadiabatic behavior, we study the quantum dynamics of the system in a thermal environment and propose a relation between the observed magnetization steps and the quantum mechanical transition probability due to the nonadiabatic transition.

Quantum Phase Transition of Randomly-Diluted Heisenberg Antiferromagnet on a Square Lattice

Ground-state magnetic properties of the diluted Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice are investigated by means of the quantum Monte Carlo method with the continuous-time loop algorithm. It is found that the critical concentration of magnetic sites is independent of the spin size S, and equal to the two-dimensional percolation threshold. However, the existence of quantum fluctuations makes the critical exponents deviate from those of the classical percolation transition. Furthermore, we found that the transition is not universal, i.e., the critical exponents significantly depend on S.

Transport Phenomena at a Critical Point -- Thermal Conduction in the Creutz Cellular Automaton --

Nature of energy transport around a critical point is studied in the Creutz cellular automaton. Fourier heat law is confirmed to hold in this model by a direct measurement of heat flow under a temperature gradient. The thermal conductivity is carefully investigated near the phase transition by the use of the Kubo formula. As the result, the thermal conductivity is found to take a finite value at the critical point contrary to some previous works. Equal-time correlation of the heat flow is also analyzed by a mean-field type approximation to investigate the temperature dependence of thermal conductivity. A variant of the Creutz cellular automaton called the Q2R is also investigated and similar results are obtained.
