3D Beamforming in Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces-assisted Wireless Communication Networks

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) or Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces (IRS) are metasurfaces that can be deployed in various places in wireless environments to make these environments controllable and reconfigurable. In this paper, we investigate the problem of using 3D beamforming in RIS-empowered wireless networks and propose a new scheme that provides more degrees of freedom in designing and deploying the RIS-based networks. In the proposed scheme, a base station (BS) equipped with a full dimensional array of antennas optimizes its radiation pattern in the three-dimensional space to maximize the received signal to noise ratio at a target user. We also study the effect of angle of incidence of the received signal by the RIS on its reflecting properties and find a relation between this angle and the BS antenna array's tilt and elevation angles. The user receives the signal from a reflected path from the RIS as well as from a direct path from the BS which both depend on the BS antenna array's tilt and elevation angles. These angles and also the RIS element's phase shifts are jointly numerically optimized. Our simulation results show that using RIS-assisted 3D beamforming with optimized phase shifts and radiation angles can considerably improve the performance of wireless networks.

Jamming Suppression in Massive MIMO Systems

In this paper, we propose a framework for protecting the uplink transmission of a massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) system from a jamming attack. Our framework includes a novel minimum mean-squared error based jamming suppression (MMSE-JS) estimator for channel training and a linear zero-forcing jamming suppression (ZFJS) detector for uplink combining. The MMSE-JS exploits some intentionally unused pilots to reduce the pilot contamination caused by the jammer. The ZFJS suppresses the jamming interference during the detection of the legitimate users' data symbols. The implementation of the proposed framework is practical, since the complexities of computing the MMSE-JS and the ZFJS are linear (not exponential) with respect to the number of antennas at the base station and linear detectors with the same complexities as the ZFJS have been already fabricated using 28 nm FD-SOI (Fully Depleted Silicon On Insulator) technology in [12] and Xilinx Virtex-7 XC7VX690T FPGA in [13] for the mMIMO systems. Our analysis shows that the jammer cannot dramatically affect the performance of a mMIMO system equipped with the combination of MMSE-JS and ZFJS. Numerical results confirm our analysis.

Security Vulnerability of FDD Massive MIMO Systems in Downlink Training Phase

We consider downlink channel training of a frequency division duplex (FDD) massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system when a multi-antenna jammer is present in the network. The jammer intends to degrade mean square error (MSE) of the downlink channel training by designing an attack based on second-order statistics of its channel. The channels are assumed to be spatially correlated. First, a closed-form expression for the channel estimation MSE is derived and then the jammer determines the conditions under which the MSE is maximized. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed jamming can severely increase the estimation MSE even if the optimal training signals with a large number of pilot symbols are used by the legitimate system.

QoE-Aware Beamforming Design for Massive MIMO Heterogeneous Networks

One of the main goals of the future wireless networks is improving the users quality of experience (QoE). In this paper, we consider the problem of QoE-based resource allocation in the downlink of a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) heterogeneous network (HetNet). The network consists of a macro cell with a number of small cells embedded in it. The small cells base stations (BSs) are equipped with a few antennas, while the macro BS is equipped with a massive number of antennas. We consider the two services Video and Web Browsing and design the beamforming vectors at the BSs. The objective is to maximize the aggregated Mean Opinion Score (MOS) of the users under constraints on the BSs powers and the required quality of service (QoS) of the users. We also consider extra constraints on the QoE of users to more strongly enforce the QoE in the beamforming design. To reduce the complexity of the optimization problem, we suggest suboptimal and computationally efficient solutions. Our results illustrate that increasing the number of antennas at the BSs and also increasing the number of small cells antennas in the network leads to a higher user satisfaction.

Jamming Detection in Massive MIMO Systems

This paper considers the physical layer security of a pilot-based massive multiple-input multiple-output (MaMIMO) system in presence of a multi-antenna jammer. To improve security of the network, we propose a new jamming detection method that makes use of a generalized likelihood ratio test over some coherence blocks. Our proposed method utilizes intentionally unused pilots in the network. The performance of the proposed detector improves by increasing the number of antennas at the base station, the number of unused pilots and also by the number of the coherence blocks that are utilized. Simulation results confirm our analyses and show that in the MaMIMO regime, perfect detection (i.e., correct detection probability is one) is achievable even with a small number of unused pilots.

Enhancement of Physical Layer Security Using Destination Artificial Noise Based on Outage Probability

In this paper, we study using Destination Artificial Noise (DAN) besides Source Artificial Noise (SAN) to enhance physical layer secrecy with an outage probability based approach. It is assumed that all nodes in the network (i.e. source, destination and eavesdropper) are equipped with multiple antennas. In addition, the eavesdropper is passive and its channel state and location are unknown at the source and destination. In our proposed scheme, by optimized allocation of power to the SAN, DAN and data signal, a minimum value for the outage probability is guaranteed at the eavesdropper, and at the same time a certain level of signal to noise ratio (SNR) at the destination is ensured. Our simulation results show that using DAN along with SAN brings a significant enhancement in power consumption compared to methods that merely adopt SAN to achieve the same outage probability at the eavesdropper.

Jamming-Resistant Receivers for the Massive MIMO Uplink

We design a jamming-resistant receiver scheme to enhance the robustness of a massive MIMO uplink system against jamming. We assume that a jammer attacks the system both in the pilot and data transmission phases. The key feature of the proposed scheme is that, in the pilot phase, we estimate not only the legitimate channel, but also the jamming channel by exploiting a purposely unused pilot sequence. The jamming channel estimate is used to constructed linear receive filters that reject the impact of the jamming signal. The performance of the proposed scheme is analytically evaluated using asymptotic properties of massive MIMO. The optimal regularized zero-forcing receiver and the optimal power allocation are also studied. Numerical results are provided to verify our analysis and show that the proposed scheme greatly improves the achievable rates, as compared to conventional receivers. Interestingly, the proposed scheme works particularly well under strong jamming attacks, since the improved estimate of the jamming channel outweighs the extra jamming power.

Resource Allocation and Relay Selection In Full-Duplex Cooperative Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access Networks

This paper is on relay selection in uplink of an in-band full-duplex (IBFD) cooperative cellular network. Assuming an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) cellular network, we develop a relay selection and resource allocation algorithm for this network. The relay selection algorithms select the best relay based on distance between users and signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) that operate in amplify and forward (AF) mode. The optimization problem allocates the optimum subcarriers and powers to all users to maximize the average sum-rate of the network. In addition, the constraints of the optimization problem are quality of service (QoS) and transmit power of each user. Simulation results illustrate the good performance of the proposed method.

Joint Tilt Angle Adaptation and Beamforming in Multicell Multiuser Cellular Networks

3D beamforming is a promising approach for interference coordination in cellular networks which brings significant improvements in comparison with conventional 2D beamforming techniques. This paper investigates the problem of joint beamforming design and tilt angle adaptation of the BS antenna array for maximizing energy efficiency (EE) in downlink of multi-cell multi-user coordinated cellular networks. An iterative algorithm based on fractional programming approach is introduced to solve the resulting non-convex optimization problem. In each iteration, users are clustered based on their elevation angle. Then, optimization of the tilt angle is carried out through a reduced complexity greedy search to find the best tilt angle for a given placement of the users. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm achieves higher EE compared to the 2D beamforming techniques.

On the Uplink Spectral Efficiency of Full-Duplex Cooperative OFDMA Systems

In this paper, we develop a resource allocation algorithm for uplink of in-band full-duplex (FD) cellular networks. The FD cellular network is assumed to be based on orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) and consists of a base station communicating with multiple users. Some of the users in the network act as relay for other users and help them to transmit their data to the base station. These relays are FD and work based on amplify and forward (AF) protocol. By appropriate selection of the relays and optimized allocation of subcarriers and powers to all users, we try to maximize the total sum rate of the network. During this optimization, we also impose some constraints on the users' quality of service (QoS) and power. We propose a new algorithm to select the best relays based on the users' maximum data rate and also use Linear Assignment Problem Jonker-Volgenant (LAPJV) algorithm for subcarrier assignment. It is proved that the resulting optimization problem can be converted to a convex problem, and hence it can be solved by standard numerical methods. The simulation results demonstrate the effect of the proposed scheme on the sum rate and coverage of the network.

Subverting Massive MIMO by Smart Jamming

We consider uplink transmission of a massive multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) system in the presence of a smart jammer. The jammer aims to degrade the sum spectral efficiency of the legitimate system by attacking both the training and data transmission phases. First, we derive a closed-form expression for the sum spectral efficiency by taking into account the presence of a smart jammer. Then, we determine how a jammer with a given energy budget should attack the training and data transmission phases to induce the maximum loss to the sum spectral efficiency. Numerical results illustrate the impact of optimal jamming specifically in the large limit of the number of base station (BS) antennas.
