Conformal-biharmonic hypersurfaces in spheres and product spaces

The conformal-bienergy functional $E_2^c$ is a modified version of the classical bienergy functional $E_2$ and it is conformally invariant in the case of a four-dimensional domain. The critical points of $E_2^c$ are called conformal-biharmonic and denoted $c$-biharmonic. In the first part of the paper we study the $c$-biharmonic hypersurfaces $M^m$ with constant principal curvatures in the product space $ {\mathbb L}^m(\varepsilon) \times \mathbb{R} $, where $ {\mathbb L}^m(\varepsilon) $ denotes a space form of constant sectional curvature $ \varepsilon $. Specifically, we demonstrate that $ M^m $ is either totally geodesic or a cylindrical hypersurface of the form $ M^{m-1} \times \mathbb{R} $, where $ M^{m-1} $ is an iso\-parametric $c$-biharmonic hypersurface in $ {\mathbb L}^m(\varepsilon) $. In the second part of this article we obtain a full description of isoparametric $c$-biharmonic hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{S}^{m+1}$ and a complete classification of $c$-biharmonic hypersurfaces with constant scalar curvature in $\mathbb{S}^{m+1}$, $m=2,3$ and $m=4$ with an additional assumption. In this context, we shall also prove a global result for compact $c$-biharmonic immersions in $\mathbb{S}^5$. In the final part of the paper, as a preliminary effort to understand $c$-biharmonic hypersurfaces in $ {\mathbb L}^m(\varepsilon) \times \mathbb{R} $ with \textit{non-constant} mean curvature, we establish that a totally umbilical $c$-biharmonic hypersurface must necessarily be totally geodesic.

Polyharmonic hypersurfaces into pseudo-Riemannian space forms

In this paper we shall assume that the ambient manifold is a pseudo-Riemannian space form $N^{m+1}_t(c)$ of dimension $m+1$ and index $t$ ($m\geq2$ and $1 \leq t\leq m$). We shall study hypersurfaces $M^{m}_{t'}$ which are polyharmonic of order $r$ (briefly, $r$-harmonic), where $r\geq 3$ and either $t'=t$ or $t'=t-1$. Let $A$ denote the shape operator of $M^{m}_{t'}$. Under the assumptions that $M^{m}_{t'}$ is CMC and $Tr A^2$ is a constant, we shall obtain the general condition which determines that $M^{m}_{t'}$ is $r$-harmonic. As a first application, we shall deduce the existence of several new families of proper $r$-harmonic hypersurfaces with diagonalizable shape operator, and we shall also obtain some results in the direction that our examples are the only possible ones provided that certain assumptions on the principal curvatures hold. Next, we focus on the study of isoparametric hypersurfaces whose shape operator is non-diagonalizable and also in this context we shall prove the existence of some new examples of proper $r$-harmonic hypersurfaces ($r \geq 3$). Finally, we shall obtain the complete classification of proper $r$-harmonic isoparametric pseudo-Riemannian surfaces into a $3$-dimensional Lorentz space form.

Index and nullity of proper biharmonic maps in spheres

In recent years, the study of the bienergy functional has attracted the attention of a large community of researchers, but there are not many examples where the second variation of this functional has been thoroughly studied. We shall focus on this problem and, in particular, we shall compute the exact index and nullity of some known examples of proper biharmonic maps. Moreover, we shall analyse a case where the domain is not compact. More precisely, we shall prove that a large family of proper biharmonic maps $φ:\mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{S}^2$ is strictly stable with respect to compactly supported variations. In general, the computations involved in this type of problems are very long. For this reason, we shall also define and apply to specific examples a suitable notion of index and nullity with respect to equivariant variations.

Polyharmonic hypersurfaces into space forms

In this paper we shall assume that the ambient manifold is a space form $N^{m+1}(c)$ and we shall consider polyharmonic hypersurfaces of order $r$ (briefly, $r$-harmonic), where $r\geq 3$ is an integer. For this class of hypersurfaces we shall prove that, if $c \leq 0$, then any $r$-harmonic hypersurface must be minimal provided that the mean curvature function and the squared norm of the shape operator are constant. When the ambient space is $\mathbb{S}^{m+1}$, we shall obtain the geometric condition which characterizes the $r$-harmonic hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature and constant squared norm of the shape operator, and we shall establish the bounds for these two constants. In particular, we shall prove the existence of several new examples of proper $r$-harmonic isoparametric hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{S}^{m+1}$ for suitable values of $m$ and $r$. Finally, we shall show that all these $r$-harmonic hypersurfaces are also $ES-r$-harmonic, i.e., critical points of the Eells-Sampson $r$-energy functional.

Helix surfaces in the special linear group

We characterize helix surfaces (constant angle surfaces) in the special linear group $\mathrm{SL}(2,\r)$. In particular, we give an explicit local description of these surfaces in terms of a suitable curve and a 1-parameter family of isometries of $\mathrm{SL}(2,\r)$.

Biconservative surfaces

In this work we obtain some geometric properties of biconservative surfaces into a Riemannian manifold. In particular, we shall study the relationship between biconservative surfaces and the holomorphicity of a generalized Hopf function. Also, we give a complete classification of CMC biconservative surfaces in a $4$-dimensional space form.

Biharmonic submanifolds into ellipsoids

In this paper we construct proper biharmonic submanifolds into various types of ellipsoids. We also prove, in this context, some useful composition properties which can be used to produce large families of new proper biharmonic immersions.

Biharmonic curves into quadrics

We develop an essentially algebraic method to study biharmonic curves into an implicit surface. Although our method is rather general, it is especially suitable to study curves into surfaces defined by a polynomial equation: in particular, we use it to give a complete classification of biharmonic curves into real quadrics of the 3-dimensional Euclidean space.

A generalisation of the Hopf Construction and harmonic morphisms into $\s^2$

In this paper we construct a new family of harmonic morphisms $φ:V^5\to\s^2$, where $V^5$ is a 5-dimensional open manifold contained in an ellipsoidal hypersurface of $\c^4=\r^8$. These harmonic morphisms admit a continuous extension to the completion ${V^{\ast}}^5$, which turns out to be an explicit real algebraic variety. We work in the context of a generalization of the Hopf construction and equivariant theory.

Properties of biharmonic submanifolds in spheres

In the present paper we survey the most recent classification results for proper biharmonic submanifolds in unit Euclidean spheres. We also obtain some new results concerning geometric properties of proper biharmonic constant mean curvature submanifolds in spheres.

Biharmonic submanifolds of $\mathbb{C}P^n$

We give some general results on proper-biharmonic submanifolds of a complex space form and, in particular, of the complex projective space. These results are mainly concerned with submanifolds with constant mean curvature or parallel mean curvature vector field. We find the relation between the bitension field of the inclusion of a submanifold $\bar{M}$ in $\mathbb{C}P^n$ and the bitension field of the inclusion of the corresponding Hopf-tube in $\mathbb{S}^{2n+1}$. Using this relation we produce new families of proper-biharmonic submanifolds of $\mathbb{C}P^n$. We study the geometry of biharmonic curves of $\mathbb{C}P^n$ and we characterize the proper-biharmonic curves in terms of their curvatures and complex torsions.

Submanifolds with Biharmonic Gauss Map

We generalize the Ruh-Vilms problem by characterizing the submanifolds in Euclidean spaces with proper biharmonic Gauss map and we construct examples of such hypersurfaces.

Biharmonic Hypersurfaces in 4-Dimensional Space Forms

We investigate proper biharmonic hypersurfaces with at most three distinct principal curvatures in space forms. We obtain the full classification of proper biharmonic hypersurfaces in 4-dimensional space forms.

Biminimal immersions

We study biminimal immersions, that is immersions which are critical points of the bienergy for normal variations with fixed energy. We give a geometrical description of the Euler-Lagrange equation associated to biminimal immersions for: i) biminimal curves in a Riemannian manifold, with particular care to the case of curves in a space form ii) isometric immersions of codimension one in a Riemannian manifold, in particular for surfaces of a three-dimensional manifold. We describe two methods to construct families of biminimal surfaces using both Riemannian and horizontally homothetic submersions.

Classification results for biharmonic submanifolds in spheres

We classify biharmonic submanifolds with certain geometric properties in Euclidean spheres. For codimension 1, we determine the biharmonic hypersurfaces with at most two distinct principal curvatures and the conformally flat biharmonic hypersurfaces. We obtain some rigidity results for pseudo-umbilical biharmonic submanifolds of codimension 2 and for biharmonic surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector field. We also study the type, in the sense of B-Y. Chen, of compact proper biharmonic submanifolds with constant mean curvature in spheres.

The biharmonic stress-energy tensor and the Gauss map

We consider the energy and bienergy functionals as variational problems on the set of Riemannian metrics and present a study of the biharmonic stress-energy tensor. This approach is then applied to characterise weak conformality of the Gauss map of a submanifold. Finally, working at the level of functionals, we recover a result of Weiner linking Willmore surfaces and pseudo-umbilicity.
