A smoking gun signature of the 3HDM

We analyse new signals of a 3-Higgs Doublet Model (3HDM) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) where only one doublet acquires a Vacuum Expectation Value (VEV), preserving a $Z_2$ parity. The other two doublets are \textit{inert} and do not develop a VEV, leading to a \textit{dark scalar sector} controlled by $Z_2$, with the lightest CP-even dark scalar $H_1$ being the Dark Matter (DM) candidate. This leads to the loop induced decay of the next-to-lightest scalar, $H_2 \to H_1 \ell \bar \ell $ ($\ell =e,μ$), mediated by both dark CP-odd neutral and charged scalars. This is a smoking-gun signal of the 3HDM since it is not allowed in the 2-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) with one inert doublet and is expected to be important when $H_2$ and $H_1$ are close in mass. In practice, this signature can be observed in the cascade decay of the SM-like Higgs boson, $h\to H_1 H_2\to H_1 H_1 \ell \bar \ell$ into two DM particles and di-leptons or $h\to H_2 H_2\to H_1 H_1 \ell \bar \ell \ell \bar \ell$ into two DM particles and four-leptons, where $h$ is produced from gluon-gluon Fusion. In order to test the feasibility of these channels at the LHC, we devise some benchmarks, compliant with collider, DM and cosmological data, for which the interplay between these production and decay modes is discussed. In particular, we show that the resulting detector signatures, $\Et \ell \bar \ell$ or $\Et \ell \bar \ell \ell \bar \ell$, with the invariant mass of $ \ell \bar \ell$ pairs much smaller than $m_Z$, can potentially be extracted already from Run 3 data and at the High-Luminosity phase of the LHC.

Searching for $H \to hh \to b\bar bττ$ in the 2HDM Type-I at the LHC

Unlike other realisations of the 2-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM), the so-called Type-I allows for a very light Higgs boson spectrum. Specifically, herein, the heaviest of the two CP-even neutral Higgs states, $H$, can be the one discovered at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in 2012, with a mass of $\approx 125$ GeV and couplings consistent with those predicted by the Standard Model (SM). In such a condition of the model, referred to as `inverted mass hierarchy', the decay of the SM-like Higgs state into pairs of the lightest CP-even neutral Higgs boson, $h$, is possible, for masses of the latter ranging from $M_H/2\approx 65$ GeV down to 15 GeV or so, all compatible with experimental constraints. In this paper, we investigate the scope of the LHC in accessing the process $gg\to H \to hh\to b\bar bττ$ by performing a Monte Carlo (MC) analysis aimed at extracting this signal from the SM backgrounds, in presence of a dedicated trigger choice and kinematic selection. We prove that some sensitivity to such a channel exists already at Run 3 of the LHC while the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) will be able to either confirm or disprove this theoretical scenario over sizable regions of its parameter space.

Discovering a light charged Higgs boson via $W^{\pm *}$ + 4$b$ final states at the LHC

Most of the current experimental searches for charged Higgs bosons at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) concentrate upon the $tb$ and $τν$ decay channels. In the present study, we analyze instead the feasibility of the bosonic decay channel $W^{\pm *} h$, with the charged gauge boson being off-shell and $h$ being a neutral light Higgs boson, which decays predominantly into $b\bar{b}$. We perform a Monte Carlo (MC) analysis for the associate production of a charged Higgs with such a light neutral one, $pp\to H^\pm h$, at the LHC followed by the aforementioned charged Higgs boson decay, which leads to a $W^{\pm *} +4b$ final state. The analysis is performed within the 2-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) with Yukawa texture of Type-I. We take into account all available experimental constraints from LEP, Tevatron and the LHC as well as the theoretical requirements of self-consistency of this scenario. In order to study the full process $pp \rightarrow H^{\pm} h \rightarrow W^{\pm *} h h \rightarrow \ell^\pm ν+ 4b$ ($\ell=e,μ$), we provide several Benchmark Points (BPs) amenable to further analysis, with $M_{H^\pm}+M_{b} < M_{t}$, for which we prove that there is a strong possibility that this spectacular signal could be found at the LHC with center of mass energy 14 TeV and luminosity 300 $\rm{fb}^{-1}$.

$\mathbf{Z^\prime}$-boson dilepton searches and the high-$\mathbf{x}$ quark density

We study the influence of theoretical systematic uncertainties due to the quark density on LHC experimental searches for $Z^\prime$-bosons. Using an approach originally proposed in the context of the ABMP16 PDF set for the high-$x$ behaviour of the quark density, we presents results on observables commonly used to study $Z^\prime$ signals in dilepton channels.

Search for Mono-Higgs Signals in $b\bar b$ Final States Using Deep Neural Networks

We study mono-Higgs signatures emerging in an illustrative new physics scenario involving Standard Model Higgs boson decays to bottom quark pairs using Hybrid Deep Neural Networks. We use a Multi-Layer Perceptron to analyze the kinematic observables and optimize the signal-to-background discrimination. The global color flow structure of hard jets emerging from the decay of heavy particles with different color charges is crucial to single out the mono-Higgs signature. Upon embedding the different color flow structures for signal and backgrounds into constructed images, we use a Convolution Neural Network to analyze the latter. Specifically, the approach takes initially a mono-type data as input, frittering away invaluable multi-source and multi-scale information. We then discuss a general architecture of Hybrid Deep Neural Networks that supports instead mixed input data. In comparison with single input Deep Neural Networks, like MultiLayers Perceptron or Convolution Neural Network, the Hybrid Deep Neural Networks provide higher capacity in feature extraction and thus in signal vs background classification performance. We provide reference results for the case of the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider.

Probing the $h c\bar{c} $ coupling at a Future Circular Collider in the electron-hadron mode

We study the production of a neutral Higgs boson at a Future Circular Collider in the electron-hadron mode (FCC-eh) through the leading process $e^- p \to ν_e h q $ assuming the decay channel $h \to c \bar{c} $, where $h$ is the Standard Model (SM)-like state discovered at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This process is studied in the context of a 2-Higgs Doublet Model Type III (2HDM-III) embedding a four-zero texture in the Yukawa matrices and a general Higgs potential, where both Higgs doublets are coupled with up- and down-type fermions. Flavour Changing Neutral Currents (FCNCs) are well controlled by this approach through the adoption of a suitable texture once flavour physics constraints are taken in account. Considering the parameter space where the signal is enhanced and in agreement with both experimental data and theoretical conditions, we analyse the aforementioned signal by taking into account the most important SM backgrounds, separating $c$-jets from light-flavour and gluon ones as well as $b$-jets by means of efficient flavour tagging. We find that the $h c \bar{c} $ coupling strength can be accessed with good significance after a luminosity of $1$ ab$^{-1}$ for a 50 TeV proton beam and a 60 GeV electron one, the latter with a 80\% (longitudinal) polarisation.

LHC sensitivity to Z'/W' states in composite Higgs models

Using the 4-Dimensional Composite Higgs Model (4DCHM) realization of the minimal composite Higgs scenario, we discuss the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) sensitivity to new physics signals from multiple $Z^\prime$ and $W^\prime$ broad resonances. We illustrate the role of systematic uncertainties due to QCD effects encoded in parton distribution functions for experimental searches in leptonic channels. We show that, by reducing this systematics through the combination of high-precision measurements of Standard Model (SM) lepton-charge and forward-backward asymmetries near the SM vector-boson peak, the sensitivity to the new physics signals can be greatly enhanced.

Spectral Clustering for Jet Reconstruction

We present a new approach to jet definition alternative to clustering methods, such as the anti-$k_T$ scheme, that exploit kinematic data directly. Instead the new method uses kinematic information to represent the particles in a multidimensional space, as in spectral clustering. After confirming its Infra-Red (IR) safety, we compare its performance in analysing $gg \rightarrow H_{125~\rm GeV} \rightarrow H_{40~\rm GeV}H_{40~\rm GeV} \rightarrow b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$, $gg \rightarrow H_{500~\rm GeV} \rightarrow H_{125~\rm GeV}H_{125~\rm GeV} \rightarrow b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$ and $gg, q\bar{q} \rightarrow t\bar{t} \rightarrow b\bar{b}W^+W^- \rightarrow b\bar{b}jjlνl$ events from Monte Carlo (MC) samples, specifically, in reconstructing the relevant final states, to that of the anti-$k_T$ algorithm. Finally, we show that the results for spectral clustering are obtained without any change in the parameter settings of the algorithm, unlike the anti-$k_T$ case, which requires the cone size to be adjusted to the physics process under study.

Hunting light Higgses at the LHC in the context of the 2HDM Type-I

We show the reinterpretation of existing searches for exotic decays of the Standard Model (SM)-like Higgs, $H \to aa (hh)$, in various final states, in the framework of the 2-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) Type-I. We then explore a new search for such light Higgses, $a$ and $h$, at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Run 3 for an integrated luminosity of 300 $\text{fb}^{-1}$. After performing a scan over the model parameters, we found that the inverted scenario of Type-I offers a new promising signal in the form of the following cascade decays: $H \to Z^{*}a \to Z^{*}Z^{*}h \to b\overline{b} μ^- μ^+ jj$. We investigate then its significance through a full Monte Carlo (MC) simulation down to the detector level.

A Novel Experimental Search Channel for Very Light Higgses in the 2HDM Type I

We present a reinterpretation study of existing results from the CMS Collaboration, specifically, searches for light Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) Higgs pairs produced in the chain decay $pp\to H_{\rm SM}\to hh(aa)$ into a variety of final states, in the context of the CP-conserving 2-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) Type-I. Through this, we test the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) sensitivity to a possible new signature, $pp\to H_{\rm SM}\to ZA\to ZZ h$, with $ZZ\to jj μ^+μ^-$ and $h\to b\bar b$. We perform a systematic scan over the 2HDM Type-I parameter space, by taking into account all available theoretical and experimental constraints, in order to find a region with a potentially visible signal. We investigate the significance of it through a full Monte Carlo simulation down to the parametrised detector level. We show that such a signal is an alternative promising channel to standard four-body searches for light BSM Higgses at the LHC already with an integrated luminosity of ${\cal L} = 300~{\rm fb}^{-1}$. For a tenfold increase of the latter, discovery should be possible over most of the allowed parameter space.

Light charged Higgs boson in $H^\pm h$ associated production at the LHC

We investigate the light charged Higgs boson production via $pp \rightarrow H^\pm h$ at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the Two-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) type-I. By focusing on a scenario where $H$ is the observed Higgs boson of mass 125 GeV, we study the aforementioned Higgs boson production channel and explore its bosonic decay $H^\pm \rightarrow W^\pm h$. The latter can have a sizable rate that possibly dominates, over the fermionic decay channels, in several regions of the viable parameter space. We demonstrate that the production process $pp \rightarrow H^\pm h$ followed by $H^\pm \rightarrow W^\pm h$ could be the most promising experimental avenue to search for light $H^\pm$ at the LHC.

The $Z_3$ soft breaking in the I(2+1)HDM and its probes at present and future colliders

A $ Z_3 $ symmetric 3-Higgs Doublet Model (3HDM) with two inert doublets and one active doublet (that plays the role of the Higgs doublet), the so-called I(2+1)HDM, is studied. We discuss the behaviour of this 3HDM realisation when one allows for a $ Z_3 $ soft breaking term. Such a symmetry enables the presence of a two-component Dark Matter (DM) scenario in the form of "Hermaphrodite DM", where the two inert candidates have opposite CP parity and are protected by this discrete symmetry from decaying into Standard Model (SM) particles. Furthermore, the two DM states are potentially distinguishable from each other as they cannot be subsumed into a complex field, having different masses and gauge couplings. With this in mind, we study differential spectra with a distinctive shape from which the existence of two different DM component distributions could be easily inferred. We prove this to be possible at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) via the $q\bar{q} \to 2l+H_1H_1$ and $q\bar{q} \to 2l+A_1A_1$ processes as well as at a future electron-positron machine via the $e^{+}e^{-} \to 2l+H_1H_1$ and $e^{+}e^{-} \to 2l+A_1A_1$ channels, where $l=e,μ$.

A fermionic portal to a non-abelian dark sector

We introduce a new class of renormalisable models, consisting of a dark $SU(2)_D$ gauge sector connected to the Standard Model (SM) through a Vector-Like (VL) fermion mediator, not requiring a Higgs portal, in which a massive vector boson is the Dark Matter (DM) candidate. These models are labelled Fermion Portal Vector Dark Matter (FPVDM). Multiple realisations are possible, depending on the properties of the VL partner and of the scalar potential. One example is discussed in detail. FPVDM models have a large number of applications in collider and non-collider experiments, depending on the mediator sector.

The Dark $Z'$ and Sterile Neutrinos Behind Current Anomalies

We show how, in the $B-L$ extension of the SM (BLSM) with an Inverse Seesaw (IS) mechanism for neutrino mass generation, a light $Z'$ state with moderate couplings to SM objects, hence `dark' in its nature, can be associated, in conjunction with light sterile neutrinos, to some present day data anomalies, such as the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon as well as a possible signal indicating the existence of sterile neutrinos in neutrino beam experiments.

Spectral Clustering for Jet Physics

We present a new approach to jet definition alternative to clustering methods, such as the anti-$k_T$ scheme, that exploit kinematic data directly. Instead the new method uses kinematic information to represent the particles in a multidimensional space, as in spectral clustering. After confirming its Infra-Red (IR) safety, we compare its performance in analysing $qq\to H_{125\,\text{GeV}} \rightarrow H_{40\,\text{GeV}} H_{40\,\text{GeV}} \rightarrow b \bar{b} b \bar{b}$, $qq\to H_{500\,\text{GeV}} \rightarrow H_{125\,\text{GeV}} H_{125\,\text{GeV}} \rightarrow b \bar{b} b \bar{b}$ and $gg,q\bar q\to t\bar t\to b\bar b W^+W^-\to b\bar b jj \ellν_\ell$ events from Monte Carlo (MC) samples, specifically, in reconstructing the relevant final states, to that of the anti-kT algorithm. Finally, we show that the results for spectral clustering are obtained without any change in the parameter settings of the algorithm, unlike the anti-kT case, which requires the cone size to be adjusted to the physics process under study.

Production of charged Higgs $H^\pm$ through $cb$-fusion at LHC

Considering the framework of the 2-Higgs Doublet Model Type III (2HDM-III), wherein two doublets are coupled both to up as down fermions, and the Flavour Changin Currents (FCNCs) is controlled by a four-zero Texture approach in the Yukawa matrices. We study the production of charged Higgs ($H^\pm$) by means of $cb$ quark fusion followed by channel decay $H^\pm \to τ^\pm ν$ : $ c b \to H^\pm \to τ^\pm \bar ν$. Taking in account the experimental bounds, as well as the theoretical constraints analysed in previous work arXiv:2003.06263[hep-ph]. One can show that in a lepton-specific-like incarnation of the model, we obtain a significant sensitivity for the LHC machine. We consider in the aforementioned study to both irreducible and reducible backgrounds of the SM.

New Discovery Modes for a Light Charged Higgs Boson at the LHC

At the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), both the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations have been searching for light charged Higgs bosons via top (anti)quark production and decays channels, like $pp\to t \bar{t}$ with one top (anti)quark decaying into a charged Higgs boson and a $b$ (anti)quark, when the decay is kinematically open (i.e., when $m_{H^\pm}\lesssim m_t$). In this paper, we propose new searches at the LHC involving light charged Higgs bosons via their pair production channels like $pp\to H^\pm h/A$ and $pp\to H^+ H^-$ in the 2-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) Type-I and -X scenarios. By focusing on the case where the heavy $H$ state plays the role of the Standard Model (SM)-like Higgs boson with a mass near 125 GeV, we study the aforementioned Higgs boson pair production channels and investigate their bosonic decays, such as $H^\pm \to W^{\pm } h$ and/or $H^\pm \to W^{\pm } A$. We demonstrate that for a light charged Higgs boson state, with $m_{H^\pm}\lesssim m_t$, at the LHC, such di-Higgs production and decay channels can give rise to signatures with event rates much larger than those emerging from $pp\to t\bar{t}\to t\bar{b} H^-$ + c.c.. We specifically study $h/A\to b\bar b$ and $τ^+τ^-$ decays. We, therefore, claim that the discussed combination of new production and decay modes can result in an alternative discovery channel for charged Higgs bosons lighter than the top (anti)quark at the LHC within the above two 2HDM Types. Finally, in order to motivate experimentalists in ATLAS and CMS to search for such signatures, we propose 16 Benchmark Points (BPs) which are compatible with both theoretical and experimental constraints.

Searching for $H^\pm\to W^{\pm} + 4γ$ signals in the 2HDM Type-I at the LHC

We analyze a new signature of a charged Higgs boson in the Type-I realization of the 2-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM), where the mass of the charged Higgs boson satisfies the condition $M_{H^{\pm}}<M_{t}+M_{b}$ and the theoretical parameter space is consistent with the latest experimental constraints from Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and other direct as well as indirect searches. In the surviving regions, it is found that the bosonic decay mode of a charged Higgs boson is dominated by $H^{\pm} \rightarrow W^{\pm*}h$. At the same time, the light neutral Higgs boson $h$ dominantly decays into two photons. We thus find that the production process $pp \rightarrow H^{\pm}h \rightarrow W^{\pm*}h h \rightarrow l^{\pm}ν+4γ$ is almost background free. Since the $W^{\pm}$ could be either off-shell or on-shell, furthering a previous phenomenological analysis, we examine closely detector effects onto the above signature and demonstrate that it is indeed promising to study it at the LHC with both $\sqrt{s}= 13$ TeV and $\sqrt{s} = 14$ TeV, assuming an integrated luminosity of 300 $fb^{-1}$.
