The Snowmass Points and Slopes: Benchmarks for SUSY Searches

The ``Snowmass Points and Slopes'' (SPS) are a set of benchmark points and parameter lines in the MSSM parameter space corresponding to different scenarios in the search for Supersymmetry at present and future experiments. This set of benchmarks was agreed upon at the 2001 ``Snowmass Workshop on the Future of Particle Physics'' as a consensus based on different existing proposals.

Determination of $\tanβ$ at a Future $e^+e^-$ Linear Collider

It is widely stated that the ratio of neutral Higgs field vacuum expectation values, $\tanb$, is one of the most difficult parameters to determine in either the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) or a general type-II Two-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM). Assuming an energy and integrated luminosity of $\rts=500\gev$ and $\call=2000\fbi$, we show that a very accurate determination of $\tanb$ will often be possible using Higgs production rates and/or Higgs decays. Based on a TESLA simulation, and assuming no other light Higgs bosons and $100\leq m_A \leq 200\gev$, we find that the rate for the process $\epem\to b\anti b A \to b\anti b b\anti b$ provides an excellent determination of $\tanb$ at high $\tanb$. In the MSSM Higgs sector, the rate for $\epem\to b\anti b A+ b\anti b H \to b\anti b b\anti b$ ($\epem\to HA \to b\anti b b\anti b$) provides a good determination of $\tanb$ at high (low) $\tanb$, respectively, at moderate $m_A$ values. We also show that direct measurement of the average total width of the $H$ and $A$ in $\epem\to HA \to b\anti b b\anti b$ events provides an excellent determination of $\tanb$ at large $\tanb$.

How to Interpret a Tau Excess at LEP2 within the MSSM

Neutralino and tau slepton pair production can naturally produce an excess of tau lepton pairs at the current LEP collider energies. We describe the constraints this has on the values of the mass parameters in the softly broken Supersymmetric Lagrangian, and consider the consequences for superpartner production at LEP and at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The pair production of the LSP and a heavier neutralino, followed by a 2-body decay to a tau slepton and tau lepton, is consistent with the present LEP data, predicts a chargino mass below 125 GeV, and provides an interesting Cold Dark Matter component, with a relic matter density of .1-.2.

Report of the Beyond the MSSM Subgroup for the Tevatron Run II SUSY/Higgs Workshop

There are many low-energy models of supersymmetry breaking parameters which are motivated by theoretical and experimental considerations. Here, we discuss some of the lesser-known theories of low-energy supersymmetry, and outline their phenomenological consequences. In some cases, these theories have more gauge symmetry or particle content than the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. In other cases, the parameters of the Lagrangian are unusual compared to commonly accepted norms (e.g., Wino LSP, heavy gluino LSP, light gluino, etc.). The phenomenology of supersymmetry varies greatly between the different models. Correspondingly, particular aspects of the detectors assume greater or lesser importance. Detection of supersymmetry and the determination of all parameters may well depend upon having the widest possible view of supersymmetry phenomenology.

Measuring Gaugino Soft Phases and the LSP Mass At Fermilab

Once superpartners are discovered at colliders, the next challenge will be to determine the parameters of the supersymmetric Lagrangian. We illustrate how the relative phases of the gluino, SU(2), and U(1) gauginos and the Higgsino mass parameter mu can be measured at a hadron collider without ad hoc assumptions about the underlying physics, focusing on Fermilab. We also discuss how the gluino and LSP masses can be measured.

The complementarity of LEP, the Tevatron and the LHC in the search for a light MSSM Higgs boson

We study the properties of the Higgs boson sector in the MSSM, putting special emphasis on radiative effects which can affect the discovery potential of the LHC, Tevatron and/or LEP colliders. We concentrate on the V b b-bar channel, with V=Z or W, and on the channels with diphoton final states, which are the dominant ones for the search for a light Standard Model Higgs boson at LEP/Tevatron and LHC, respectively. By analyzing the regions of parameter space for which the searches in at least one of these colliders can be particularly difficult, we demonstrate the complementarity of these three colliders in the search for a light Higgs boson which couples in a relevant way to the W and Z gauge bosons (and hence plays a relevant role in the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking).

Technihadron Production and Decay at LEP2

The simple "straw-man" model of low-scale technicolor contains light color--singlet technihadrons, which mix with the electroweak gauge bosons. We present lepton collider production rates at the parton level, and show that experiments at LEP2 may be sensitive to the presence of technirho and techniomega states with masses 10-20 GeV beyond the center-of-mass energy because of the mixing. The exact sensitivity depends on several parameters, such as the technipion mass, the technipion mixing angle, and the charge of the technifermions. In an appendix, we describe the implementation of the model into the event generator PYTHIA for particle-level studies at lepton and hadron colliders.

A study of SUSY signatures at the Tevatron in models with near mass degeneracy of the lightest chargino and neutralino

For some choices of soft SUSY-breaking parameters, the LSP is a stable neutralino $\cnone$, the NLSP is a chargino $\cpmone$ almost degenerate in mass with the LSP ($\dmchi\equiv\mcpmone-\mcnone\sim \mpi-$few GeV), and all other sparticles are relatively heavy. In this case, detection of sparticles in the usual, mSUGRA-motivated signals will be difficult, since the decay products in $\cpmone\to\cnone...$ will be very soft, and alternative signals must be considered. Here, we study the viability of signatures at the Tevatron based on highly-ionizing charged tracks, disappearing charged tracks, large impact parameters, missing transverse energy and a jet or a photon, and determine the mass reach of such signatures assuming that only the $\cpmone$ and $\cnone$ are light. We also consider the jet+$\etmiss$ and $γ+\etmiss$ signatures assuming that the gluino is also light with $\mgl\sim \mcpmone$. We find that the mass reach is critically dependent upon $\dmchi$ and $\mgl-\mcpmone$. If $\dmchi$ is sufficiently big that $cτ(\cpmone)\lsim$few cm and $\mgl$ is large, there is a significant possibility that the limits on $\mcpmone$ based on LEP2 data cannot be extended at the Tevatron. If $cτ(\cpmone)>$few cm, relatively background-free signals exist that will give a clear signal of $\cpmone$ production (for some range of $\mcpmone$) even if $\mgl$ is very large.

Higher order corrections to parton showering from resummation calculations

The connection between analytic and Monte Carlo calculations of soft gluon emission is reanalyzed in light of recent, theoretical developments in resummation. An alternative Monte Carlo algorithm is suggested which incorporates (1) corrections beyond leading order to the showering and (2) smoothly merges with the higher order calculation of single, hard parton emission. In particular, it is possible to study jet properties in heavy boson production for all values of the boson transverse momentum with a total cross section of NLO accuracy. The specific cases of $W$, $Z$ and Higgs boson production at the Tevatron are addressed using a modified version of the Pythia Monte Carlo.

MSSM Higgs Boson Phenomenology at the Tevatron Collider

The Higgs sector of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) consists of five physical Higgs bosons, which offer a variety of channels for their experimental search. The present study aims to further our understanding of the Tevatron reach for MSSM Higgs bosons, addressing relevant theoretical issues related to the SUSY parameter space, with special emphasis on the radiative corrections to the down--quark and lepton couplings to the Higgs bosons for large $\tanβ$. We performed a computation of the signal and backgrounds for the production processes $Wϕ$ and $b \bar{b} ϕ$ at the upgraded Tevatron, with $ϕ$ being the neutral MSSM Higgs bosons. Detailed experimental information and further higher order calculations are demanded to confirm/refine these predictions.

Photon Pair Production with Soft Gluon Resummation in Hadronic Interactions

The production rate and kinematic distributions of isolated photon pairs produced in hadron interactions are studied. The effects of the initial-state multiple soft-gluon emission to the scattering subprocesses q-qbar, qg, and gg to gamma gamma X are resummed with the Collins-Soper-Sterman soft gluon resummation formalism. The effects of fragmentation photons from qg to gamma q, followed by q to gamma X, are also studied. The results are compared with data from the Fermilab Tevatron collider. A prediction of the production rate and kinematic distributions of the diphoton pair in proton-nucleon reactions is also presented.

Physics Backgrounds to Supersymmetric Signals with Two Photons and Missing Mass at LEP

We calculate the event rates for the Standard Model production of two photons plus missing mass through the process electron positron to gamma gamma nu nubar, where nu is any of the three neutrino flavors, at LEP energies. This process can be a background to new physics signatures, such as that expected from supersymmetry with a higgsino or gravitino LSP. The missing mass distribution is presented for several sets of kinematic cuts at beam energies of 161, 172, 184, and 194 GeV. The effect of initial state photon radiation is also studied, and is found to be significant, approximately doubling the event rates.

Effects of QCD Resummation on $W^+h$ and $t\bar b$ Production at the Tevatron

The resummation of multiple soft gluon emission affects the production rate and kinematic distributions of $W^+h$ (where h is a Higgs boson) and $t \bar b$ pairs at the Tevatron with $\sqrt{s}=2$ TeV. Using the Collins-Soper-Sterman resummation formalism, the production rate is enhanced over the next-to-leading-order (NLO) prediction by 2-3% for the $W^+h$ process, for Higgs boson masses between 80-120 GeV, and over 3% for the $t\bar b$ process for $m_t=175$ GeV. After resummation, the $t\bar b$ rate changes by 12-13% when $m_t$ is varied by $\pm 5$ GeV. Various kinematic distributions are presented for the individual final state particles and for the pair. The explicit radiation of hard gluons in NLO QCD is included also for the $t\bar b$ final state.
