Search for the K(S) --> e+e- decay with the KLOE detector at DAFNE

We present results of a direct search for the decay KS --> e+e- with the KLOE detector, obtained with a sample of e+e- --> phi --> KSKL events produced at DAFNE, the Frascati phi-factory, for an integrated luminosity of 1.3fb-1. The Standard Model prediction for this decay is BR(KS --> e+e-) = 1.6*10^-15. The search has been performed tagging the KS decays by simultaneous detection of a KL interaction in the calorimeter. Background rejection has been optimized by using both kinematic cuts and particle identification. At the end of the analysis chain we find BR(KS --> e+e-) < 2.1*10^-8 at 90% CL, which improves by a factor of ~7 on the previous best result, obtained by CPLEAR experiment.

Kilohertz laser ablation for doping helium nanodroplets

A new setup for doping helium nanodroplets by means of laser ablation at kilohertz repetition rate is presented. The doping process is characterized and two distinct regimes of laser ablation are identified. The setup is shown to be efficient and stable enough to be used for spectroscopy, as demonstrated on beam-depletion spectra of lithium atoms attached to helium nanodroplets. For the first time, helium droplets are doped with high temperature refractory materials such as titanium and tantalum. Doping with the non-volatile DNA basis Guanine is found to be efficient and a number of oligomers are detected.

Diamond thin Film Detectors for Beam Monitoring Devices

Diamonds offer radiation hard sensors, which can be used directly in primary beams. Here we report on the use of a polycrystalline CVD diamond strip sensor as beam monitor of heavy ion beams with up to 2.10^9 lead ions per bunch. The strips allow for a determination of the transverse beam profile to a fraction of the pitch of the strips, while the timing information yields the longitudinal bunch length with a resolution of the order of a few mm.

Systematic study of (g,n) reaction rates for Z>=78 isotopes

The (g,n) reaction rates of the isotopes 196,198,204-Hg and 204-Pb have been determined using the photoactivation technique in an energy region relevant for p process nucleosynthesis. The systematic study of the ground-state (g,n) reaction rates on even-even nuclei in the mass region Z>=78 is complemented with these experiments. The data are compared to rates predicted in the framework of two statistical model approaches.
