Measurements of Production Properties of K0S mesons and Lambda hyperons in Proton-Carbon Interactions at 31 GeV/c

Spectra of K0S mesons and Lambda hyperons were measured in p+C interactions at 31 GeV/c with the large acceptance NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS. The data were collected with an isotropic graphite target with a thickness of 4% of a nuclear interaction length. Interaction cross sections, charged pion spectra, and charged kaon spectra were previously measured using the same data set. Results on K0S and Lambda production in p+C interactions serve as reference for the understanding of the enhancement of strangeness production in nucleus-nucleus collisions. Moreover, they provide important input for the improvement of neutrino flux predictions for the T2K long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in Japan. Inclusive production cross sections for K0S and Lambda are presented as a function of laboratory momentum in intervals of the laboratory polar angle covering the range from 0 up to 240 mrad. The results are compared with predictions of several hadron production models. The K0S mean multiplicity in production processes and the inclusive cross section for K0S production were measured and amount to 0.127 +- 0.005 (stat) +- 0.022 (sys) and 29.0 +- 1.6 (stat) +- 5.0 (sys) mb, respectively.

Status of the ArDM Experiment: First results from gaseous argon operation in deep underground environment

The Argon Dark Matter (ArDM-1t) experiment is a ton-scale liquid argon (LAr) double-phase time projection chamber designed for direct Dark Matter searches. Such a device allows to explore the low energy frontier in LAr. After successful operation on surface at CERN, the detector has been deployed underground and is presently commissioned at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (LSC). In this paper, we describe the status of the installation and present first results on data collected in gas phase.

Pion emission from the T2K replica target: method, results and application

The T2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in Japan needs precise predictions of the initial neutrino flux. The highest precision can be reached based on detailed measurements of hadron emission from the same target as used by T2K exposed to a proton beam of the same kinetic energy of 30 GeV. The corresponding data were recorded in 2007-2010 by the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN SPS using a replica of the T2K graphite target. In this paper details of the experiment, data taking, data analysis method and results from the 2007 pilot run are presented. Furthermore, the application of the NA61/SHINE measurements to the predictions of the T2K initial neutrino flux is described and discussed.

Measurement of Production Properties of Positively Charged Kaons in Proton-Carbon Interactions at 31 GeV/c

Spectra of positively charged kaons in p+C interactions at 31 GeV/c were measured with the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS. The analysis is based on the full set of data collected in 2007 with a graphite target with a thickness of 4% of a nuclear interaction length. Interaction cross sections and charged pion spectra were already measured using the same set of data. These new measurements in combination with the published ones are required to improve predictions of the neutrino flux for the T2K long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in Japan. In particular, the knowledge of kaon production is crucial for precisely predicting the intrinsic electron neutrino component and the high energy tail of the T2K beam. The results are presented as a function of laboratory momentum in 2 intervals of the laboratory polar angle covering the range from 20 up to 240 mrad. The kaon spectra are compared with predictions of several hadron production models. Using the published pion results and the new kaon data, the K+/π+ ratios are computed.

Measurements of Cross Sections and Charged Pion Spectra in Proton-Carbon Interactions at 31 GeV/c

Interaction cross sections and charged pion spectra in p+C interactions at 31 GeV/c were measured with the large acceptance NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS. These data are required to improve predictions of the neutrino flux for the T2K long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in Japan. A set of data collected during the first NA61/SHINE run in 2007 with an isotropic graphite target with a thickness of 4% of a nuclear interaction length was used for the analysis. The measured p+C inelastic and production cross sections are 257.2 +- 1.9 +- 8.9 mb and 229.3 +- 1.9 +- 9.0 mb, respectively. Inclusive production cross sections for negatively and positively charged pions are presented as a function of laboratory momentum in 10 intervals of the laboratory polar angle covering the range from 0 up to 420 mrad. The spectra are compared with predictions of several hadron production models.

Self-assembly of iron nanoclusters on the Fe3O4(111) superstructured surface

We report on the self-organized growth of a regular array of Fe nanoclusters on a nanopatterned magnetite surface. Under oxidizing preparation conditions the (111) surface of magnetite exhibits a regular superstructure with three-fold symmetry and a 42 A periodicity. This superstructure represents an oxygen terminated (111) surface, which is reconstructed to form a periodically strained surface. This strain patterned surface has been used as a template for the growth of an ultrathin metal film. A Fe film of 0.5 A thickness was deposited on the substrate at room temperature. Fe nanoclusters are formed on top of the surface superstructure creating a regular array with the period of the superstructure. We also demonstrate that at least the initial stage of Fe growth occurs in two-dimensional mode. In the areas of the surface where the strain pattern is not formed, random nucleation of Fe was observed.

Atomically Resolved Spin-Dependent Tunnelling on the Oxygen-Terminated Fe3O4 (111)

We employ spin-polarized (SP) STM to study the spin-dependent tunneling between a magnetite (111) sample and an antiferromagnetic tip through a vacuum barrier at room temperature. Atomic scale STM images show significant magnetic contrast corresponding to variations in the local surface states induced by oxygen vacancies. The estimated variations in tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) of 250% suggest that the spin-transport properties are significantly altered locally by the presence of surface defects.

Mechanism of epitaxial self-assembly of Fe nanowedge islands on Mo(110)

The deposition of ultrathin Fe films on the Mo(110) surface at elevated temperatures results in the formation of distinctive nanowedge islands supported on a pseudomorphic Fe layer. We propose a model explaining the growth mode of these wedge-shaped Fe islands. The model is based on the strain produced in the substrate around each island, by the lattice mismatch between the film and substrate. Fe adatoms migrate towards the islands due to the influence of this strain, which is related to the thickness and size of each island. The adatoms subsequently enter the islands not only through their thin ends where the island can be only two monolayers thick but on the contrary, through a vertical climb along the sides of the thicker end, which can be tens of layers thick. This mode of mass transport is again driven by strain, corresponding to the energy reduction through movement towards the location where the interatomic spacing in the island corresponds to the bulk value. A key element of the model is that misfit dislocations are formed in the lower layers of the nanowedge, which act as migration channels for the vertical climb.

Room temperature study of a strain-induced electronic superstructure on a magnetite (111) surface

A magnetite (Fe3O4) single crystal (111) surface has been studied at various oxygen-iron surface stoichiometries. The stoichiometry was modified by controlling the in-situ sample anneal conditions. We have found the conditions that lead to the formation of an oxygen-rich surface that forms a quasi-hexagonal superstructure with a 42A periodicity. The superstructure is highly regular and was observed by both LEED and STM. The superstructure consists of three regions, two of which have identical atomic scale structures with a periodicity of 2.8A, and a third having a periodicity that is about 10% larger (3.1A). The subtle difference in the atomic periodicities between the three areas results from the modulation of intrinsic strain developed along the surface. The superstructure results from electronic effects rather than being a mosaic of different iron oxide terminations. The onset of the superstructure is sensitive to the surface stoichiometry. From our results we could estimate the critical density of defects leading to the disappearance of the superstructure. We have modelled the experimental results and calculated the electron density using a DFT algorithm. The model clearly shows the development of strain along the surface.
