Resemblances and differences in mechanisms of noise-induced resonance

Systems showing stochastic resonance (SR) or coherent resonance (CR) share some features, in particular the nearby periodic character of the signal. We show that in spite of this resemblance the different underlying dynamics can be detected in experimental data by studying the histogram of inter-spikes times and some statistical properties like two-times correlation functions. We discuss the possible relevance for climate modeling.

Multiple-scale analysis and renormalization for pre-asymptotic scalar transport

Pre-asymptotic transport of a scalar quantity passively advected by a velocity field formed by a large-scale component superimposed to a small-scale fluctuation is investigated both analytically and by means of numerical simulations. Exploiting the multiple-scale expansion one arrives at a Fokker--Planck equation which describes the pre-asymptotic scalar dynamics. Such equation is associated to a Langevin equation involving a multiplicative noise and an effective (compressible) drift. For the general case, no explicit expression for both the effective drift and the effective diffusivity (actually a tensorial field) can be obtained. We discuss an approximation under which an explicit expression for the diffusivity (and thus for the drift) can be obtained. Its expression permits to highlight the important fact that the diffusivity explicitly depends on the large-scale advecting velocity. Finally, the robustness of the aforementioned approximation is checked numerically by means of direct numerical simulations.

Polymer transport in random flow

The dynamics of polymers in a random smooth flow is investigated in the framework of the Hookean dumbbell model. The analytical expression of the time-dependent probability density function of polymer elongation is derived explicitly for a Gaussian, rapidly changing flow. When polymers are in the coiled state the pdf reaches a stationary state characterized by power-law tails both for small and large arguments compared to the equilibrium length. The characteristic relaxation time is computed as a function of the Weissenberg number. In the stretched state the pdf is unstationary and exhibits multiscaling. Numerical simulations for the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes flow confirm the relevance of theoretical results obtained for the delta-correlated model.

Relaxation of finite perturbations: Beyond the Fluctuation-Response relation

We study the response of dynamical systems to finite amplitude perturbation. A generalized Fluctuation-Response relation is derived, which links the average relaxation toward equilibrium to the invariant measure of the system and points out the relevance of the amplitude of the initial perturbation. Numerical computations on systems with many characteristic times show the relevance of the above relation in realistic cases.

Two-dimensional turbulence of dilute polymer solutions

We investigate theoretically and numerically the effect of polymer additives on two-dimensional turbulence by means of a viscoelastic model. We provide compelling evidence that at vanishingly small concentrations, such that the polymers are passively transported, the probability distribution of polymer elongation has a power law tail: its slope is related to the statistics of finite-time Lyapunov exponents of the flow, in quantitative agreement with theoretical predictions. We show that at finite concentrations and sufficiently large elasticity the polymers react on the flow with manifold consequences: velocity fluctuations are drastically depleted, as observed in soap film experiments; the velocity statistics becomes strongly intermittent; the distribution of finite-time Lyapunov exponents shifts to lower values, signalling the reduction of Lagrangian chaos.

Lagrangian Statistics and Temporal Intermittency in a Shell Model of Turbulence

We study the statistics of single particle Lagrangian velocity in a shell model of turbulence. We show that the small scale velocity fluctuations are intermittent, with scaling exponents connected to the Eulerian structure function scaling exponents. The observed reduced scaling range is interpreted as a manifestation of the intermediate dissipative range, as it disappears in a Gaussian model of turbulence.

Inverse cascade in Charney-Hasegawa-Mima turbulence

The inverse energy cascade in Charney-Hasegawa-Mima turbulence is investigated. Kolmogorov law for the third order velocity structure function is shown to be independent on the Rossby number, at variance with the energy spectrum, as shown by high resolution direct numerical simulations. In the asymptotic limit of strong rotation, coherent vortices are observed to form at a dynamical scale which slowly grows with time. These vortices form an almost quenched pattern and induce strong deviation form Gaussianity in the velocity field.

Intermittency in two-dimensional Ekman-Navier-Stokes turbulence

We study the statistics of the vorticity field in two-dimensional Navier-Stokes turbulence with a linear Ekman friction. We show that the small-scale vorticity fluctuations are intermittent, as conjectured by Nam et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. vol.84 (2000) 5134]. The small-scale statistics of vorticity fluctuations coincides with the one of a passive scalar with finite lifetime transported by the velocity field itself.

Statistical predictability in two-dimensional turbulence

The predictability problem in the inverse energy cascade of two-dimensional turbulence is addressed by means of high resolution direct numerical simulations. The analysis is done in terms of the finite size Lyapunov exponent (FSLE) which is a measure of the growth rate at fixed error level. The numerical results are compared with classical closure predictions and good quantitative agreement is found. Finally, it is shown that the inertial range predictability properties are not affected by the presence of noise induced by the small, not resolved, scales.

Predictability of the energy cascade in 2D turbulence

The predictability problem in the inverse energy cascade of two-dimensional turbulence is addressed by means of direct numerical simulations. The growth rate as a function of the error level is determined by means of a finite size extension of the Lyapunov exponent. For error within the inertial range, the linear growth of the error energy, predicted by dimensional argument, is verified with great accuracy. Our numerical findings are in close agreement with the result of TFM closure approximation.
