Theory of composite Ramsey sequences of radiofrequency pulses beyond the rotating wave approximation

We develop a theory of composite Ramsey sequences of rf pulses interacting with the Zeeman structure at the long-lived atomic level, beyond the rotating wave approximation. Such sequences are proposed in experiments to detect the violation of local Lorentz invariance [R. Shaniv, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 103202 (2018)]. Based on Fourier analysis, we have shown that taking into account non-resonant contributions leads to a radical change in the dynamics of the quantum system (with respect to the rotating wave approximation) in the case when the number of Ramsey pulses exceeds several tens. As a result, the effectiveness of using such rf pulses sequences to test local Lorentz invariance has not yet been fully determined and requires additional research.

Theory of nonlinear sub-Doppler laser spectroscopy taking into account atomic-motion-induced density-dependent effects in a gas

We develop a field-nonlinear theory of sub-Doppler spectroscopy in a gas of two-level atoms, based on a self-consistent solution of the Maxwell-Bloch equations in the mean field and single-atom density matrix approximations. This makes it possible to correctly take into account the effects caused by the free motion of atoms in a gas, which lead to a nonlinear dependence of the spectroscopic signal on the atomic density even in the absent of a direct interatomic interaction (e.g., dipole-dipole interaction). Within the framework of this approach, analytical expressions for the light field were obtained for an arbitrary number of resonant waves and arbitrary optical thickness of a gas medium. Sub-Doppler spectroscopy in the transmission signal for two counterpropagating and co-propagating waves has been studied in detail. A previously unknown red shift of a narrow sub-Doppler resonance is predicted in a counterpropagating waves scheme, when the frequency of one wave is fixed and the frequency of the other wave is varied. The magnitude of this shift depends on the atomic density and can be more than an order of magnitude greater than the known shift from the interatomic dipole-dipole interaction (Lorentz-Lorenz shift). The found effects, caused by the free motion of atoms, require a significant revision of the existing picture of spectroscopic effects depending on the density of atoms in a gas. Apart of fundamental aspect, obtained results are important for precision laser spectroscopy and optical atomic clocks.

Probe field ellipticity-induced shift in an atomic clock

We investigate the probe field induced shift for atomic lattice-based and ion-trap clocks, which can be considered as a near resonant ac-Stark shift, connected to the Zeeman structure of atomic levels and their splitting in a dc magnetic field. This shift arises from possible residual ellipticity in the polarization of the probe field and uncertainty in the magnetic field orientation. Such a shift can have an arbitrary sign and, for some experimental conditions, can reach the fractional value of the order of 10$^{-18}$-10$^{-19}$, i.e., it is not negligible. Thus, it should be taken into account in the uncertainty budgets for the modern ultra-precise atomic clocks. In addition, it is shown that when using hyper-Ramsey spectroscopy, this shift can be reduced to a level much lower than $10^{-19}$.

Atomic-motion-induced spectroscopic effects nonlinear in atomic density in a gas

The interatomic dipole-dipole interaction is commonly thought to be the main physical reason for spectroscopic effects nonlinear in atomic density. However, we have found that the free motion of atoms can lead to other effects nonlinear in atomic density $n$, using a previously unknown self-consistent solution of the Maxwell-Bloch equations in the mean-field approximation for a gas of two-level atoms with an optical transition at unperturbed frequency $ω^{}_0$. These effects distort the Doppler lineshape (shift, asymmetry, broadening), but are not associated with an atom-atom interaction. In particular, in the case of $nk^{-3}_0<1$ (where $k^{}_0=ω^{}_0/c$) and significant Doppler broadening (with respect to collisional broadening), atomic-motion-induced nonlinear effects significantly exceed the well-known influence of the dipole-dipole interatomic interaction (e.g., Lorentz-Lorenz shift) by more than one order of magnitude. Moreover, under some conditions a frequency interval appears in which a non-trivial self-consistent solution of the Maxwell-Bloch equations is absent due to atomic motion effects. Thus, the existing physical picture of spectroscopic effects nonlinear in atomic density in a gas medium should be substantially revised.

Peculiar long-term fluorescence of Rb atoms in coated vapor cell with internal atomic source

We report on an experiment in which the fluorescence decay time of 5P levels of Rb atoms in a coated vapor cell exceeds several of milliseconds, many orders of magnitude longer than normal decay time of excited of rubidium atoms. We found that this peculiarly long - term decay is not exponential and can only be observed in a high quality coated cell with a long lifetime of optical pumped atoms on atomic ground-state sublevels. A numerical simulation based on a complete density matrix is presented. It supports the population pumping process through the ground-state sublevels of Rb atoms as the most plausible mechanism for the observed phenomenon and it consistently demonstrates all the relevant features of the experiment. The investigation can be used, for example, to explore the quality of a various anti-relaxation coatings used for the resonant cells.

Paraffin coated rubidium cell with an internal atomic vapor source

We present the results of a study on relaxation and diffusion processes of rubidium atoms in a rubidium cell with an internal vapor source. The cell is an evacuated glass bulb, which is characterized in that the source of atomic vapors in the form of a metal film Rb is evenly distributed throughout the inner surface of the bulb, and the paraffin film is uniformly distributed over the entire area and over the metal surface. By using laser optical pumping, we performed measurements of the relaxation time and the average number of bounces of optical pumped rubidium atoms in the bulb. We have measured the adsorption time of rubidium atoms by paraffin coating and rubidium atoms diffusion coefficient in paraffin used. A simple model of the pumping and atomic diffusion processes in the cell is discussed as well.

Atomic clocks with suppressed blackbody radiation shift

We develop a nonstandard concept of atomic clocks where the blackbody radiation shift (BBRS) and its temperature fluctuations can be dramatically suppressed (by one to three orders of magnitude) independent of the environmental temperature. The suppression is based on the fact that in a system with two accessible clock transitions (with frequencies v1 and v2) which are exposed to the same thermal environment, there exists a "synthetic" frequency v_{syn} (v1-e12 v2) largely immune to the BBRS. As an example, it is shown that in the case of ion 171Yb+ it is possible to create a clock in which the BBRS can be suppressed to the fractional level of 10^{-18} in a broad interval near room temperature (300\pm 15 K). We also propose a realization of our method with the use of an optical frequency comb generator stabilized to both frequencies v1 and v2. Here the frequency v_{syn} is generated as one of the components of the comb spectrum and can be used as an atomic standard.

Josephson dynamics for coupled polariton modes under the atom-field interaction in the cavity

We consider a new approach to the problem of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of polaritons for atom-field interaction under the strong coupling regime in the cavity. We investigate the dynamics of two macroscopically populated polariton modes corresponding to the upper and lower branch energy states coupled via Kerr-like nonlinearity of atomic medium. We found out the dispersion relations for new type of collective excitations in the system under consideration. Various temporal regimes like linear (nonlinear) Josephson transition and/or Rabi oscillations, macroscopic quantum self-trapping (MQST) dynamics for population imbalance of polariton modes are predicted. We also examine the switching properties for time-averaged population imbalance depending on initial conditions, effective nonlinear parameter of atomic medium and kinetic energy of low-branch polaritons.

High-temperature Bose-Einstein condensation of polaritons: realization under the intracavity laser pumping of matter condition

A quantum model of Bose-Einstein condensation based on processes involving polaritons excited in an intracavity absorbing cell with resonance atoms, which is manifested in the spectral characteristics of the system, is considered. It is shown that the spectral 'condensation' appears which is directly related to the degeneracy of a weakly interacting gas of polaritons resulting in quasi-condensation at room temperature. The possibility of obtaining polariton condensation as a new phase state by using the confinement of polaritons in an atomic optical harmonic trap is discussed.

Quantum cloning in coupled states of optical field and atomic ensemble by quasi-condensation of polaritons

We consider a new approach for storing quantum information by macroscopic atomic excitations of two level atomic system. We offer the original scheme of quantum cloning of optical field into the cavity polaritons containing the phase insensitive parametrical amplifier and atomic cell placed in the cavity. The high temperature quasi-condensation (and/or condensation) phenomenon for polaritons arising in the cavity under the certain conditions is proposed for the first time.

Strong light-matter coupling: parametric interactions in a cavity and free-space

We consider parametric interactions of laser pulses in a coherent macroscopic ensemble of resonant atoms, which are possible in the strong coupling regime of light-matter interaction. The spectrum condensation (lasing at collective vacuum Rabi sidebands) was studied in an active cavity configuration. Parametric interactions under the strong light-matter coupling were proved even in free space. In contrast to bichromatic beats in a cavity, they were shown to appear due to interference between polaritonic wave packets of different group velocities.

Coherent interaction of laser pulses in a resonant optically dense extended medium under the regime of strong field-matter coupling

Nonstationary pump-probe interaction between short laser pulses propagating in a resonant optically dense coherent medium is considered. A special attention is paid to the case, where the density of two-level particles is high enough that a considerable part of the energy of relatively weak external laser-fields can be coherently absorbed and reemitted by the medium. Thus, the field of medium reaction plays a key role in the interaction processes, which leads to the collective behavior of an atomic ensemble in the strongly coupled light-matter system. Such behavior results in the fast excitation interchanges between the field and a medium in the form of the optical ringing, which is analogous to polariton beating in the solid-state optics. This collective oscillating response, which can be treated as successive beats between light wave-packets of different group velocities, is shown to significantly affect propagation and amplification of the probe field under its nonlinear interaction with a nearly copropagating pump pulse. Depending on the probe-pump time delay, the probe transmission spectra show the appearance of either specific doublet or coherent dip. The widths of these features are determined by the density-dependent field-matter coupling coefficient and increase during the propagation. Besides that, the widths of the coherent features, which appear close to the resonance in the broadband probe-spectrum, exceed the absorption-line width, since, under the strong-coupling regime, the frequency of the optical ringing exceeds the rate of incoherent relaxation. Contrary to the stationary strong-field effects, the density- and coordinate-dependent transmission spectra of the probe manifest the importance of the collective oscillations and cannot be obtained in the framework of the single-atom model.

Resonant nonstationary amplification of polychromatic laser pulses and conical emission in an optically dense ensemble of neon metastable atoms

Experimental and numerical investigation of single-beam and pump-probe interaction with a resonantly absorbing dense extended medium under strong and weak field-matter coupling is presented. Significant probe beam amplification and conical emission were observed. Under relatively weak pumping and high medium density, when the condition of strong coupling between field and resonant matter is fulfilled, the probe amplification spectrum has a form of spectral doublet. Stronger pumping leads to the appearance of a single peak of the probe beam amplification at the transition frequency. The greater probe intensity results in an asymmetrical transmission spectrum with amplification at the blue wing of the absorption line and attenuation at the red one. Under high medium density, a broad band of amplification appears. Theoretical model is based on the solution of the Maxwell-Bloch equations for a two-level system. Different types of probe transmission spectra obtained are attributed to complex dynamics of a coherent medium response to broadband polychromatic radiation of a multimode dye laser.

Absolute frequency measurement of the In$^{+}$ clock transition with a mode-locked laser

The absolute frequency of the In$^{+}$ $5s^{2 1}S_{0}$ - $5s5p^{3}P_{0}$ clock transition at 237 nm was measured with an accuracy of 1.8 parts in $10^{13}$. Using a phase-coherent frequency chain, we compared the $^{1}S_{0}$ - $^{3}P_{0}$ transition with a methane-stabilized He-Ne laser at 3.39 $μ$m which was calibrated against an atomic cesium fountain clock. A frequency gap of 37 THz at the fourth harmonic of the He-Ne standard was bridged by a frequency comb generated by a mode-locked femtosecond laser. The frequency of the In$^{+}$ clock transition was found to be $1 267 402 452 899.92 (0.23)$ kHz, the accuracy being limited by the uncertainty of the He-Ne laser reference. This represents an improvement in accuracy of more than 2 orders of magnitude on previous measurements of the line and now stands as the most accurate measurement of an optical transition in a single ion.

Measurement of the 1s-2s energy interval in muonium

The 1s-2s interval has been measured in the muonium ({$μ^+e^-$}) atom by Doppler-free two-photon laser spectroscopy. The frequency separation of the states was determined to be 2 455 528 941.0(9.8) MHz in good agreement with quantum electrodynamics. The muon-electron mass ratio can be extracted and is found to be 206.768 38(17). The result may be interpreted as measurement of the muon-electron charge ratio as $-1- 1.1(2.1)\cdot 10^{-9}$.
