Switching of an antiferromagnet controlled by spin canting in a laser-induced hidden phase

During laser-induced phase transitions, fast transformations of electronic, atomic, and spin configurations often involve emergence of hidden and metastable phases. Being inaccessible under any other stimuli, such phases are indispensable for unveiling mechanisms and controlling the transitions. We experimentally explore spin kinetics during ultrafast first-order 90$^{\circ}$ spin-reorientation (SR) transition in a canted antiferromagnet Fe$_3$BO$_6$, and reveal that the transition is controlled by the canting between the magnetic sublattices. Laser-induced perturbation of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction results in a change of the intersublattice canting within first picoseconds, bringing Fe$_3$BO$_6$ to a hidden phase. Once this phase emerges, laser-induced heating activates precessional 90$^\circ$ spin switching. Combination of the spin canting and heating controls the final spin configuration comprising coexisting initial and switched phases. Extended phase coexistence range is in a striking contrast to the narrow SR transition in Fe$_3$BO$_6$ induced by conventional heating.

Magnetic phase diagram of HoFeO$_3$ by neutron diffraction

Neutron diffraction studies of HoFeO$_3$ single crystal were performed under external magnetic fields. The interplay between the external magnetic field, Dzyaloshinsky-Moria antisymmetric exchange and isotropic exchange interactions between Fe and Ho sublattice and inside Fe sublattice provides a rich phase diagram. As the result of the balance of exchange interactions inside crystal and external magnetic field we found 8 different magnetic phases, produced or suppressed by the field.

Neutron inelastic scattering study of rare-earth orthoferrite HoFeO$_3$

By the single crystal inelastic neutron scattering the orthoferrite HoFeO3 was studied. We show that the spin dynamics of the Fe subsystem does not change through the spin-reorientation transitions. The observed spectrum of magnetic excitations was analyzed in the frames of linear spin-wave theory. Within this approach the antiferromagnetic exchange interactions of nearest neighbors and next nearest neighbors were obtained for Fe subsystem. Parameters of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions at Fe subsystem were refined. The temperature dependence of the gap in Fe spin-wave spectrum indicates the temperature evolution of the anisotropy parameters. The estimations for the values of Fe-Ho and Ho-Ho exchange interaction were made as well.

Direct control of magnetic chirality in NdMn2O5 by external electric field

Detailed investigation of the incommensurate magnetic ordering in a single crystal of multiferroic NdMn2O5 has been performed using both non-polarized and polarized neutron diffraction techniques. Below TN = 30.5 K magnetic Bragg reflections corresponding to the non-chiral type magnetic structure with propagation vector k1 = (0.5 0 kz1) occurs. Below about 27 K a new distorted magnetic modulation with a similar vector kz2 occurs, which is attributed to the magnetization of the Nd3+ ions by the Mn-sub-lattice. Strong temperature hysteresis in the occurrence of the incommensurate magnetic phases in NdMn2O5 was observed depending on the cooling or heating history of the sample. Below about 20 K the magnetic structure became of a chiral type. From spherical neutron polarimetry measurements, the resulting low-temperature magnetic structure kz3 was approximated by the general elliptic helix. The parameters of the magnetic helix-like ellipticity and helical plane orientation in regard to the crystal structure were determined. A reorientation of the helix occurs at an intermediate temperature between 4 K and 18 K. A difference between the population of right- and left-handed chiral domains of about 0.2 was observed in the as-grown crystal when cooling without an external electric field. The magnetic chiral ratio can be changed by the application of an external electric field of a few kV/cm, revealing strong magnetoelectric coupling. A linear dependence of the magnetic chirality on the applied electric field in NdMn2O5 was found. The results are discussed within the frame of the antisymmetric super-exchange model for Dzyaloshinsky-Moria interaction.

Probing the role of Nd3+ ions in the weak multiferroic character of NdMn2O5 by optical spectroscopies

Raman and infrared spectroscopies are used as local probes to study the dynamics of the Nd-O bonds in the weakly multiferroic NdMn2O5 system. The temperature dependence of selected Raman excitations reveals the splitting of the Nd-O bonds in NdMn2O5. The Nd3+ ion crystal field (CF) excitations in NdMn2O5 single crystals are studied by infrared transmission as a function of temperature, in the 1800-8000 cm-1 range, and under an applied magnetic field up to 11 T. The frequencies of all 4Ij crystal-field levels of Nd3+ are determined. We find that the degeneracy of the ground-state Kramers doublet is lifted (Δ0 ~7.5 cm-1) due to the Nd3+-Mn3+ interaction in the ferroelectric phase, below TC ~ 28 K. The Nd3+ magnetic moment mNd(T) and its contribution to the magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat are evaluated from Δ0(T) indicating that the Nd3+ ions are involved in the magnetic and the ferroelectric ordering observed below ~ 28 K. The Zeeman splitting of the excited crystal field levels of the Nd3+ ions at low temperature is also analyzed.

Tunneling measurements of the electron-phonon interaction in $\rm Ba_{1-x}K_xBiO_3$

The conductance curves of point-contact tunnel junctions between Ag and $\rm Ba_{1-x}K_xBiO_3$ ($x\simeq 0.4$) reveal a BCS behavior with low leakage current at zero voltage and some broadening of the superconducting-gap structure. In the energy range above the superconducting energy gap, the structure in the voltage dependence of the second derivative $d^2V/dI^2$ of the voltage with respect to the current of the tunnel junction has been investigated in detail in magnetic fields up to $10\ T$. While part of this structure is rapidly changing in a magnetic field, three reproducible peaks in $d^2V/dI^2(V)$ remain stable up to the transition temperature from the superconducting to the normal state with only additional broadening in the applied magnetic field. An analysis of this structure in terms of strong-coupling effects yields the spectral function $α^2F$ for the electron-phonon interaction. The obtained spectral weight in the energy region 20-70~$meV$ points to the importance of the oxygen optical modes in the electron-phonon coupling for the superconductivity of $\rm Ba_{1-x}K_xBiO_3$.

Stabilization of the multiferroic spin cycloid in Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$ by light Co-doping

We present macroscopic and neutron diffraction data on multiferroic lightly Co-doped Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$. Doping Co into the parent compound suppresses the sequence of four magnetic phase transitions and only two magnetically ordered phases, the paraelectric high temperature incommensurate (HTI) and ferroelectric low temperature incommensurate (LTI), can be observed. Interestingly, the LTI multiferroic phase with a spiral (cycloidal) magnetic structure is stabilized down to at least 1.8 K, which could be revealed by measurements of the electric polarization and confirmed by neutron diffraction on single crystal samples. The extracted magnetic moments of the LTI phase contain besides the main exchange also fine components of the cycloid allowed by symmetry which result in a small amplitude variation of the magnetic moments along the cycloid propagation due to the site-dependent symmetry properties of the mixed representations. In the HTI phase a finite imaginary part of the spine magnetic moment could be deduced yielding a spin cycloid instead of a purely sinusoidal structure with an opposite spin chirality for different spine spin chains. The magnetic ordering of the cross-tie sites in both phases is different in comparison to the respective ones in the pure Ni compound. A wider temperature stability range of the HTI phase has been observed in comparison to Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$ which can be explained by an additional single-ion easy-axis anisotropy due to Co-doping. The larger incommensurability of the Co-doped compounds yields a larger ratio between the competing next-nearest neighbour and nearest neighbour interaction, which is $J_2/J_1$=0.43 (0.47) for a doping level of 7% (10%) Co compared to 0.39 in the parent compound.

Soft phonons and structural phase transition in superconducting Ba0.59K0.41BiO3

We have observed a softening of phonons and a structural phase transition in a superconducting Ba0.59K0.41BiO3 (Tc = 31 K) single crystal using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements. The soft phonon occurs for the [111] transverse acoustic mode at the zone boundary. The phonon energies in this vicinity are found to continuously decrease with decreasing temperature from above room temperature to 200 K, where a structural phase transition from cubic to tetragonal symmetry occurs. The overall results are consistent with previous data that reported phonon softening and a (0.5, 0.5, 0.5) type superstructure in several Ba1-xKxBiO3 systems. However, we also find weak (0.5, 0.5, 0) type superstructure peaks that reveal an additional component to the modulation. No significant change related to the superconductivity was observed for the soft phonon energies or linewidths.

Polaron formation in the optimally doped ferromagnetic manganites La0.7Ba0.3MnO3 and La0.7Ba0.3MnO3

The nature of the polarons in the optimally doped colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) materials La0.7Ba0.3MnO3 (LBMO) and La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) is studied by elastic and inelastic neutron scattering. In both materials, dynamic nanoscale polaron correlations develop abruptly in the ferromagnetic state. However, the polarons are not able to lock-in to the lattice and order, in contrast to the behavior of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3. Therefore ferromagnetic order in LBMO and LSMO survives their formation, explaining the conventional second order nature of the ferromagnetic--paramagnetic transition. Nevertheless, the results demonstrate that the fundamental mechanism of polaron formation is a universal feature of these ferromagnetic perovskite manganites.

X-ray and neutron diffraction studies of coupled structural phase transitions in DyBaCo$_{2}$O$_{5.5}$

A structural transition at $T\approx 322$ K from the $Pmmm$ to $Pmma$ phase is found to coincide with an anomaly of resistivity. Another structural phase transition doubling the lattice parameter $c$, which has been postulated earlier to accompany a low-temperature magnetic transition in TbBaCo$_{2}$O$_{5.5}$, is observed in a single crystal DbBaCo$_{2}$O$_{5.5}$ by means of the X-ray and neutron diffraction. The low temperature phase does not belong to the space group $Pcca$ that has been chosen earlier as the highest subgroup of the $Pmma$. The transition is of the first order with the temperature hysteresis, between $T\approx 100$ and $T\approx 200$ K, which probably explains anomalous magnetic properties in this temperature range.

Temperature excitation of the Co3+ triplet spin-state in LaCoO3 determined by polarized neutron diffraction

The magnetic moment induced by an external magnetic field of 5.8 T on the Co3+ ions in LaCoO3 has been measured by polarized neutron diffraction. Measurements were made at 100 K, near to the spin-state transition, at 1.5 K and at 285 K. The data give evidence for a transition from the ground singlet state (S = 0) to the excited triplet intermediate spin state (S = 1). The energy of K estimated for the high-spin (S = 2) state, is too high to contribute significantly even at T = 285 K. There is evidence for a small negative covalent spin density associated with the oxygen ligands amounting to about one fifth of the aligned Co3+ moment at all three temperatures.

Hole stripe and orbital fluctuating state in LaMnO$_{3+δ}$ ($0.085\leq δ\leq0.125$) unveiled by Raman spectroscopy

Giant softening by 30 cm$^{-1}$ of the 490- and 620-cm$^{-1}$ modes is observed by Raman scattering measurements below the Curie temperature of single crystalline LaMnO$_{3+δ}$ ($0.085\leq δ\leq0.125$). A pseudogap-like electronic continuum and a Fano antiresonance at 144 cm$^{-1}$ appear below the charge ordering temperature. This gives evidence for the presence of an orbital fluctuating state and the formation of a hole stripe, respectively. This is further corroborated by a unstructured broadening and shifting of multiphonon features with increasing doping $δ$. Our study suggests the significance of double exchange mechanism in the charged ordered insulating state.

Spin structure and magnetic phase transitions in TbBaCo2O5.5

Spin ordering in TbBaCo2O5.5 and its temperature transformation is studied. Polymorphism due to the oxygen ordering with the average content close to 5.5 is investigated. One of ceramic samples (I), in addition to the main phase ap x 2ap x 2ap, Pmmm, (Z=2), contained about 25% of the phase ap x ap x 2ap, Pmmm, (Z=1), with statistical distribution of oxygen over the apical sites, where ap is parameter of perovskite cell. The other sample (II) contained only a main phase with well defined octahedral and pyramidal sublattices. Treatment of neutron diffraction patterns of the sample I itself gives a sophisticated spin structure. Knowing the structure of sample II, one can chose only proper magnetic lines, which give exactly the same results as for sample II. Above the Neel temperature TN ~ 290K, there is a structural transition to the phase 2ap x 2ap x 2ap, Pmma. At TN, the spins order with the wave vector k19 = 0 (Phase 1). At T1 ~ 255K, a magnetic transition takes place to the phase 2 with k22 = b3/2. At T2 ~ 170K, the crystal structure changes to 2ap x 2ap x 4ap, Pcca (Z=4). The wave vector of the spin structure becomes again k19 = 0 (Phase 3). The basis functions of irreducible representations of the group Gk have been found. Using results of this analysis, the magnetic structure in all phases is determined. The spins are always parallel to the x axis, and the difference is in the values and mutual orientation of the moments in the ordered non-equivalent pyramidal or octahedral positions. Spontaneous moment at T = 260 K is due to ferrimagnetic ordering of the moments in pyramidal sites. (Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya canting is forbidden by symmetry.) The moment values together with the ligand displacements are used to analyze the picture of spin-state/orbital ordering in each phase.

X-ray Diffraction Study of Superstructure in GdBaCo2O5.5

A single crystal of GdBaCo2O5.47(2) has been studied by means of X-ray diffraction. Appearance of superstructure reflections at T = 341.5(7) K gives an evidence of continuous transition to the phase with unit cell doubled along the shortest edge a1. Critical exponent for the order parameter is found to be beta=0.33(1). The superstructure reflections are about 2-4 orders of magnitude weaker than the basic ones. Their systematic extinction indicates the crystal symmetry change from Pmmm to Pmma. The integrated intensities allow to calculate displacements of atoms from the positions in the high-temperature phase. The cobalt-ligand distances in the ordered phase are discussed in terms of the spin-state/orbital ordering of Co3+ ions.

Magnetization and Magnetotransport of LnBaCo2O5.5 (Ln=Gd, Eu) Single Crystals

The magnetization, resistivity and magnetoresistance (MR) of single crystals of GdBaCo2O5.5 and EuBaCo2O5.5 are measured over a wide range of dc magnetic fields (up to 30 T) and temperature. In LnBaCo2O5.5 (Ln=Gd, Eu), the Co-ions are trivalent and can exist in three spin states, namely, the S=0 low spin state (LS), the S= 1 intermediate spin state (IS) and the S=2 high spin state (HS). We confirm that GdBaCo2O5.5 and EuBaCo2O5.5 have a metal-insulator transition accompanied by a spin-state transition at TMI >> 365 and 335 K, respectively. The data suggest an equal ratio of LS (S=0) and IS (S=1) Co3+ ions below TMI, with no indication of additional spin state transitions. The low field magnetization shows a transition to a highly anisotropic ferromagnetic phase at 270 K, followed by another magnetic transition to an antiferromagnetic phase at a slightly lower temperature. The magnetization data are suggestive of weak correlations between the Gd-spins but no clear signature of ordering is seen for T > 2 K. Significant anisotropy between the a-b plane and c axis was observed in magnetic and magnetotransport properties for both compounds. For GdBaCo2O5.5, the resistivity and MR data imply a strong correlation between the spin-order and charge carriers. For EuBaCo2O5.5, the magnetic phase diagram is very similar to its Gd counterpart, but the low-T MR with current flow in the ab plane is positive rather than negative as for Gd. The magnitude and the hysteresis of the MR for EuBaCo2O5.5 decrease with increasing temperature, and at higher T the MR changes sign and becomes negative. The difference in the behavior of both compounds may arise from a small valence admixture in the nonmagnetic Eu ions, i.e. a valence slightly less than 3+.

Interplay of structural and electronic phase separation in single crystalline La(2)CuO(4.05) studied by neutron and Raman scattering

We report a neutron and Raman scattering study of a single-crystal of La(2)CuO(4.05) prepared by high temperature electrochemical oxidation. Elastic neutron scattering measurements show the presence of two phases, corresponding to the two edges of the first miscibility gap, all the way up to 300 K. An additional oxygen redistribution, driven by electronic energies, is identified at 250 K in Raman scattering (RS) experiments by the simultaneous onset of two-phonon and two-magnon scattering, which are fingerprints of the insulating phase. Elastic neutron scattering measurements show directly an antiferromagnetic ordering below a Néel temperature of T_N =210K. The opening of the superconducting gap manifests itself as a redistribution of electronic Raman scattering below the superconducting transition temperature, T_c = 24K. A pronounced temperature-dependent suppression of the intensity of the (100) magnetic Bragg peak has been detected below T_c. We ascribe this phenomenon to a change of relative volume fraction of superconducting and antiferromagnetic phases with decreasing temperature caused by a form of a superconducting proximity effect.

Phonon Raman scattering in LaMn1-xCoxO3 (x = 0, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 1.0)

The Raman-active phonons in perovskite-like LaMn1-xCoxO3 (x = 0, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 1.0) were studied by measuring Raman spectra at temperatures of 295 and 5 K. The changes in the spectra with Co doping are correlated with the decrease of orthorhombic distortions. Surprisingly more phonon lines than allowed for the rhombohedral LaCoO3 structure were observed in the spectra.

Influence of Co$^{3+}$ spin-state on optical properties of LaCoO$_3$ and HoCoO$_3$

Optical properties of the isoelectronic compounds LaCoO$_3$ and HoCoO$_3$ has been experimentally and theoretically investigated. We've measured the real $ε_1(ω)$ and imaginary $ε_2(ω)$ parts of the dielectric function, reflectance $R(ω)$ and optical conductivity at room temperature. The shift of the most pronounced spectral features to the high energy region on 0.3 eV associated with larger distortions due to the smaller rare earth ionic radii in HoCoO$_3$ in comparison with LaCoO$_3$ was observed. Also there was found an enhancement of absorption intensity in the range 1.3-2.3 eV in all kinds of spectra in HoCoO$_3$, which can be attributed basing on the results of LDA+U calculations to the different spin-states of Co$^{3+}$ ion in these compounds. The shift of the onset of the absorption from less than 0.1 eV in LaCoO$_3$ to 0.7 eV in HoCoO$_3$ and an absorption intensity enhancement in a narrow spectral range 1.2-2.6 eV in HoCoO$_3$ are clearly seen from the calculated convolution of partial densities of states obtained in the LDA+U approach. Such changes are assumed to be induced by the different Co$^{3+}$ spin-state in these compounds at room temperature.
