On successive refinement of diversity for fading ISI channels

Rate and diversity impose a fundamental trade-off in communications. This trade-off was investigated for flat-fading channels in [15] as well as for Inter-symbol Interference (ISI) channels in [1]. A different point of view was explored in [12] where high-rate codes were designed so that they have a high-diversity code embedded within them. These diversity embedded codes were investigated for flat fading channels both from an information theoretic viewpoint [5] and from a coding theory viewpoint in [2]. In this paper we explore the use of diversity embedded codes for inter-symbol interference channels. In particular the main result of this paper is that the diversity multiplexing trade-off for fading MISO/SIMO/SISO ISI channels is indeed successively refinable. This implies that for fading ISI channels with a single degree of freedom one can embed a high diversity code within a high rate code without any performance loss (asymptotically). This is related to a deterministic structural observation about the asymptotic behavior of frequency response of channel with respect to fading strength of time domain taps as well as a coding scheme to take advantage of this observation.

Wireless Network Information Flow

We present an achievable rate for general deterministic relay networks, with broadcasting at the transmitters and interference at the receivers. In particular we show that if the optimizing distribution for the information-theoretic cut-set bound is a product distribution, then we have a complete characterization of the achievable rates for such networks. For linear deterministic finite-field models discussed in a companion paper [3], this is indeed the case, and we have a generalization of the celebrated max-flow min-cut theorem for such a network.

A Deterministic Approach to Wireless Relay Networks

We present a deterministic channel model which captures several key features of multiuser wireless communication. We consider a model for a wireless network with nodes connected by such deterministic channels, and present an exact characterization of the end-to-end capacity when there is a single source and a single destination and an arbitrary number of relay nodes. This result is a natural generalization of the max-flow min-cut theorem for wireline networks. Finally to demonstrate the connections between deterministic model and Gaussian model, we look at two examples: the single-relay channel and the diamond network. We show that in each of these two examples, the capacity-achieving scheme in the corresponding deterministic model naturally suggests a scheme in the Gaussian model that is within 1 bit and 2 bit respectively from cut-set upper bound, for all values of the channel gains. This is the first part of a two-part paper; the sequel [1] will focus on the proof of the max-flow min-cut theorem of a class of deterministic networks of which our model is a special case.

On Successive Refinement of Diversity for Fading ISI Channels

Rate and diversity impose a fundamental tradeoff in communications. This tradeoff was investigated for Intersymbol Interference (ISI) channels in [4]. A different point of view was explored in [1] where high-rate codes were designed so that they have a high-diversity code embedded within them. Such diversity embedded codes were investigated for flat fading channels and in this paper we explore its application to ISI channels. In particular, we investigate the rate tuples achievable for diversity embedded codes for scalar ISI channels through particular coding strategies. The main result of this paper is that the diversity multiplexing tradeoff for fading ISI channels is indeed successively refinable. This implies that for fading single input single output (SISO) ISI channels one can embed a high diversity code within a high rate code without any performance loss (asymptotically). This is related to a deterministic structural observation about the asymptotic behavior of frequency response of channel with respect to fading strength of time domain taps.

Embedded Rank Distance Codes for ISI channels

Designs for transmit alphabet constrained space-time codes naturally lead to questions about the design of rank distance codes. Recently, diversity embedded multi-level space-time codes for flat fading channels have been designed from sets of binary matrices with rank distance guarantees over the binary field by mapping them onto QAM and PSK constellations. In this paper we demonstrate that diversity embedded space-time codes for fading Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI) channels can be designed with provable rank distance guarantees. As a corollary we obtain an asymptotic characterization of the fixed transmit alphabet rate-diversity trade-off for multiple antenna fading ISI channels. The key idea is to construct and analyze properties of binary matrices with a particular structure induced by ISI channels.
