Optical Identification and Spectroscopic Redshift Measurements of 216 Galaxy Clusters from the SRG/eROSITA All-Sky Survey

We present the results of the optical identification and spectroscopic redshift measurements of 216 galaxy clusters detected in the SRG/eROSITA all-sky X-ray survey. The spectroscopic observations were performed in 2020-2023 with the 6-m BTA telescope at the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the 2.5-m telescope at the Caucasus Mountain Observatory of the Sternberg Astronomical Institute of the Moscow State University, the 1.6-m AZT-33IK telescope at the Sayan Solar Observatory of the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the 1.5-m Russian-Turkish telescope (RTT-150) at the TÜBİTAK Observatory. For all of the galaxy clusters presented here the spectroscopic redshift measurements have been obtained for the first time. Of these, 139 galaxy clusters have been detected for the first time in the SRG/eROSITA survey and 22 galaxy clusters are at redshifts $z_{spec} \gtrsim 0.7$, including three at $z_{spec} \gtrsim 1$. Deep direct images with the rizJK filters have also been obtained for four distant galaxy clusters at $z_{spec} > 0.7$. For these observations the most massive clusters are selected. Therefore, most of the galaxy clusters presented here most likely will be included in the cosmological samples of galaxy clusters from the SRG/eROSITA survey.

The gMOSS: the galaxy survey and galaxy populations of the large homogeneous field

We present the gMOSS (Galaxies of Medium-band One-meter Schmidt telescope Survey) catalog of $\sim$ 19,000 galaxies in 20 filters (4 broadband SDSS and 16 medium-band filters). We observed 2.386 $\mathrm{deg^2}$ on the central part of the HS47.5-22 field with the 1-m Schmidt telescope of the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory. The gMOSS is a complete flux-limited sample of galaxies with a threshold magnitude of $r$ SDSS $\le$ 22.5 AB. From photometric measurements with 16 medium-band filters and $u$ SDSS, we get spectral energy distributions for each object in the field, which are used for further analysis. Galaxy classification and photometric redshift estimation based on spectral template matching with ZEBRA software. The obtained redshift accuracy is $σ_\mathrm{NMAD} < 0.0043$. Using the SED-fitting CIGALE code, we obtained the main properties of the stellar population of galaxies, such as rest-frame $(u - r)_{\mathrm{res}}$ colour, stellar mass, extinction, and mass-weighted age with a precision of $0.16 \pm 0.07$ mag, $0.14 \pm 0.04$ dex, $0.27 \pm 0.1$ mag, and $0.08 \pm 0.04$ dex, respectively. Using a dust-corrected colour-mass diagram, we divided the full sample into populations of red and blue galaxies and considered the dependencies between stellar mass and age. Throughout cosmic time, red sequence galaxies remain older and more massive than blue cloud galaxies. The star formation history of a complete subsample of galaxies selected in the redshift range $0.05\le z\le0.015$ with <$\mathrm{log} M \mathrm{>}_\mathrm{[M_\odot]}$>8.3 shows an increase in the SFRD up to $z\sim3$, under the results obtained in earlier studies.

Mass estimation of the very massive galaxy cluster SRGe CL2305.2$-$2248 from strong lensing

The galaxy cluster SRGe CL2305.2$-$2248 (SPT-CL J2305$-$2248, ACT-CL J2305.1$-$2248) is one of the most massive clusters at high redshifts ($z \simeq 0.76$) and is of great interest for cosmology. For an optical identification of this cluster, deep images were obtained with the 1.5-m Russian-Turkish telescope RTT-150. Together with the open archival data of the Hubble Space Telescope, it became possible to identify candidates for gravitationally lensed images of distant blue galaxies in the form of arcs and arclets. The observed giant arc near the brightest cluster galaxies allowed us to estimate the radius of the Einstein ring, which is $ 9.8 \pm 1.3 $ arcseconds. The photometric redshift of the lensed source was obtained ($ z_s = 2.44 \pm 0.07 $). Its use in combination with the Einstein radius estimate made it possible to independently estimate the \cl2305 mass. It was done by extrapolating the strong lensing results to large radii and using the model density distribution profiles in relaxed clusters. This extrapolation leads to mass estimates $ \sim 1.5-3 $ times smaller than those obtained from X-ray and microwave observations. A probable cause for this discrepancy may be the process of cluster merging, which is also confirmed by SRGe CL2305.2-2248 morphology in the optical range.

First tidal disruption events discovered by SRG/eROSITA: X-ray/optical properties and X-ray luminosity function at z<0.6

We present the first sample of tidal disruption events (TDEs) discovered during the SRG all-sky survey. These 13 events were selected among X-ray transients detected in the 0<l<180 deg hemisphere by eROSITA during its second sky survey (10 June - 14 December 2020) and confirmed by optical follow-up observations. The most distant event occurred at z=0.581. One TDE continued to brighten at least 6 months. The X-ray spectra are consistent with nearly critical accretion onto black holes of a few 10^3 to 10^8 M_Sun, although supercritical accretion is possibly taking place. In two TDEs, a spectral hardening is observed 6 months after the discovery. Four TDEs showed an optical brightening apart from the X-ray outburst. The other 9 TDEs demonstrate no optical activity. All 13 TDEs are optically faint, with Lopt/Lx<0.3 (Lopt and Lx being the g-band and 0.2-6 keV luminosity, respectively). We have constructed a TDE X-ray luminosity function, which can be fit by a power law with a slope of -0.6+/-0.2, similar to the trend observed for optically selected TDEs. The total rate is estimated at (1.1+/-0.5)10^-5 TDEs per galaxy per year, an order of magnitude lower than inferred from optical studies. This suggests that X-ray bright events constitute a minority of TDEs, consistent with models predicting that X-rays can only be observed from directions close to the axis of a thick accretion disk formed from the stellar debris. Our TDE detection threshold can be lowered by a factor of ~2, which should allow a detection of ~700 TDEs by the end of the SRG survey.

Observation of a very massive galaxy cluster at z=0.76 in SRG/eROSITA all-sky survey

The results of multiwavelength observations of the very massive galaxy cluster SRGe CL2305.2-2248 detected in X-rays during the first SRG/eROSITA all-sky survey are discussed. This galaxy cluster was also detected earlier in microwave band through the observations of Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect in South Pole Telescope (SPT-CL J2305-2248), and in Atacama Cosmological Telescope (ACT-CL J2305.1-2248) surveys. Spectroscopic redshift measurement, $z=0.7573$, was measured at the Russian 6-m BTA telescope of SAO RAS, in good agreement with its photometric estimates, including a very accurate one obtained using machine learning methods. In addition, deep photometric measurements were made at the Russian-Turkish 1.5-m telescope (RTT150), which allows to study cluster galaxies red sequence and projected galaxies distribution. Joint analysis of the data from X-ray and microwave observations show that this cluster can be identified as a very massive and distant one using the measurements of its X-ray flux and integral comptonization parameter only. The mass of the cluster estimated according to the eROSITA data is $M_{500}=(9.0\pm2.6)\cdot10^{14}\, M_\odot$. We show that this cluster is found among of only several dozen of the most massive clusters in the observable Universe and among of only a few the most massive clusters of galaxies at $z>0.6$.

Discovery of the most X-ray luminous quasar SRGE J170245.3+130104 at redshift z$\approx5.5$

SRGE J170245.3+130104 was discovered by the eROSITA telescope aboard the SRG space observatory on March 13-15, 2020 during the first half-year scan of its all-sky X-ray survey. The optical counterpart of the X-ray source was photometrically identified as a distant quasar candidate at $z\approx5.5$. Follow-up spectroscopic observations, done in August/September 2020 with the SCORPIO-II instrument at the BTA 6-m telescope, confirmed that SRGE J170245.3+130104 is a distant quasar at redshift z=5.466. The X-ray luminosity of the quasar during the first half-year scan of the eROSITA all-sky survey was $3.6^{+2.1}_{-1.5}\times 10^{46}$ erg/s (in the 2-10 keV energy range), whereas its X-ray spectrum could be described by a power law with a slope of $Γ=1.8^{+0.9}_{-0.8}$. Six months later (September 13-14, 2020), during the second half-year scan of the eROSITA all-sky survey, the quasar was detected again and its X-ray luminosity had decreased by a factor of 2 (at the $\approx 1.9σ$ confidence level). The SRGE J170245.3+130104 proves to be the most X-ray luminous among all known X-ray quasars at $z>5$. It is also one of the radio-loudest distant quasars (with radio-loudness $R\sim10^3$), which may imply that it is a blazar. In the Appendix, we present the list of all $z>5$ quasars detected in X-rays to date.

New Herbig-Haro objects and outflows in Mon R1 association

We present results of the narrow-band Halpha and [SII] imaging survey of Mon R1 association, performed with the 1 m Schmidt telescope of the Byurakan Observatory. Our observations covered one degree field near the center of the association. As a result of this study twenty new Herbig-Haro knots were discovered, some of which form collimated outflows. Among the most extended ones are HH 1203 and HH 1196, which have a length near one parsec or even more. In the course of search for the probable sources of HH objects several new nebulous stars were found. A list of all nebulous stellar objects in the Mon R1 area under study is presented, with the detailed description of most interesting objects. The near infrared data from the GLIMPSE360 and WISE surveys allowed to find several more objects, related to Mon R1, some of them with optical counterparts, as well as to outline at least three probable H_2 collimated flows from the deeply embedded pre-main-sequence objects. The probable members of Mon R1 were selected by their distances, their bolometric luminosities and extinctions were estimated. Among the outflow sources three embedded objects with luminosities greater than 10 L(sun) were found. The mean distance to Mon R1 complex is estimated as 715 pc.

A close look at the well-known Seyfert galaxy: extended emission filaments in Mrk6

Using various techniques of optical observations at the 6-m Russian telescope (emission-line images, long-slit and 3D spectroscopy), we have studied large-scale morphology and kinematics of the ionized gas in the Seyfert galaxy Mrk6. Having a significantly deeper images and spectra than those in previous works, we have not only mapped the ionized gas in the stellar disc but also found a system of faint filaments elongated in the NE direction up to a projected distance of 40 kpc (4.3R$_{25}$). Kinematics as well as an ionization state of the filament gas suggest the scenario that hard radiation of the active nucleus illuminated the matter accreted from outside and orbiting almost orthogonally to the Mrk 6 stellar disc. A possible source of gas accretion is still unknown, a deep image taken with the 1-m Byrakan Schmidt telescope does not show any stellar counterparts at the level of 27-28 mag/arcsec$^2$.

Optical identifications of high-redshift galaxy clusters from Planck Sunyaev-Zeldovich survey

We present the results of optical identifications and spectroscopic redshifts measurements for galaxy clusters from 2-nd Planck catalogue of Sunyaev-Zeldovich sources (PSZ2), located at high redshifts, $z\approx0.7-0.9$. We used the data of optical observations obtained with Russian-Turkish 1.5-m telescope (RTT150), Sayan observatory 1.6-m telescope, Calar Alto 3.5-m telescope and 6-m SAO RAS telescope (Bolshoi Teleskop Alt-azimutalnyi, BTA). Spectroscopic redshift measurements were obtained for seven galaxy clusters, including one cluster, PSZ2 G126.57+51.61, from the cosmological sample of PSZ2 catalogue. In central regions of two clusters, PSZ2 G069.39+68.05 and PSZ2 G087.39-34.58, the strong gravitationally lensed background galaxies are found, one of them at redshift $z=4.262$. The data presented below roughly double the number of known galaxy clusters in the second Planck catalogue of Sunyaev-Zeldovich sources at high redshifts, $z\approx0.8$.

Sample of Cataclysmic Variables from 400d X-ray Survey

We present a sample of cataclysmic variables (CVs) identified among the X-ray sources from the 400 square degree X-ray survey based on ROSAT pointing data (400d). The procedure of the CV selection among the X-ray sources using additional optical and infrared data from Sloan Digital Sky Survey and WISE survey is described. The results of the optical observations of the selected objects carried out mainly with the Russian-Turkish 1.5-m telescope (RTT-150) and the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences (BTA) are presented. Some observations have also been performed with the Sayan Observatory 1.6-m AZT-33IK telescope. Currently we selected eight CVs, four of which were found for the first time in our work. Based on this sample, we have obtained preliminary constraints on the CV X-ray luminosity function in the solar neighborhood in the low luminosity range, L_X ~ 10^29-10^30 erg s^-1 (0.5-2 keV). We show that the logarithmic slope of the CV X-ray luminosity function in this luminosity range is less steep than at L_X > 10^31 erg s^-1. From our CV X-ray luminosity function estimates it follows that few thousand CVs will be detected in theSpectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) observatory all-sky X-ray survey at high Galactic latitudes, which will allow to obtain much more accurate measurements of CV X-ray luminosity function in the luminosity range L_X < 10^30-10^31 erg s^-1.

Additional spectroscopic redshift measurements for galaxy clusters from the First Planck Catalogue

We present the results of spectroscopic redshift measurements for the galaxy clusters from the first all-sky Planck catalogue of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich sources, that have been mostly identified by means of the optical observations performed previously by our team (Planck Collaboration, 2015a). The data on 13 galaxy clusters at redshifts from z=~0.2 to z=~0.8, including the improved identification and redshift measurement for the cluster PSZ1 G141.73+14.22 at z=0.828, are provided. The measurements were done using the data from Russian-Turkish 1.5-m telescope (RTT-150), 2.2-m Calar Alto Observatory telescope, and 6-m SAO RAS telescope (Bolshoy Teleskop Azimutalnyi, BTA).

ADAM low- and medium-resolution spectrograph for 1.6-m AZT-33IK telescope

We describe the design of a low- and medium-resolution spectrograph ( R=300-1300) developed at the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SAO RAS) for the 1.6-m AZT-33IK telescope of Sayan Observatory of the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. We report the results of laboratory measurements of the parameters of the instrument and tests performed on the SAO RAS 1-m Zeiss-1000 telescope. We measured the total quantum efficiency of the "spectrograph + telescope + detector" system on AZT-33IK telescope, which at its maximum reaches 56%. Such a hight transparency of the spectrograph allows it to be used with the 1.6-m telescope to determine the types and redshifts of objects with magnitudes m_AB~20-21, that was confirmed by actual observations.

Study of young stellar groupings in HII regions based on the spectral and photometric data

We studied 102 star forming regions in seven spiral galaxies (NGC 628, NGC 783, NGC 2336, NGC 6217, NGC 6946, NGC 7331, and NGC 7678) on the basis of complex spectroscopic, photometric (UBVRI) and spectrophotometric (H alpha line) observations. Using data on the chemical composition and absorption in HII regions, obtained from spectroscopic observations, and using evolutionary models, we estimated physical parameters (ages and masses) of young stellar groupings embedded in HII regions. We found that the gas extinction, A(gas), which determined from the Balmer decrement, does not correspond in some cases to the absorption A(stars) in the young stellar associations (complexes). This is due to the spatial offset relative HII cloud the stellar group related to him. It has been found that the condition A(gas) = A(stars) does not satisfied for the star forming regions, in which: 1) the contribution to the total emission of gas in the B and/or V bands is higher than 40%, and 2) EW(H alpha) > 1500A. Extinction A(V) in studied star forming regions corrected for the Galactic absorption A(V)Gal ranges from 0 to 3 mag with a mean value A(V)-A(V)Gal = 1.18+-0.84 mag. We estimated masses and ages for 63 star forming regions. The regions have ages from 1 to 10 Myr, the most part of them are younger than 6 Myr. The derived masses of young stellar groupings range from 10^4Msun in the nearby galaxies NGC 628 and NGC 6946 to 10^7Msun in the most distant NGC 7678. More than 80% of groupings have masses between 10^5Msun and 10^6Msun. The lowest mass estimate of 1x10^4Msun for the objects in NGC 628 and NGC 6946 belongs to the mass interval of the youngest Galactic open clusters.

Panoramic Spectroscopy of Galaxies with Star-formation Regions. A Study of SBS 1202+583

The methods of panoramic (3D) spectroscopy are used in a detailed study of galaxies with ongoing star formation chosen from among objects in seven selected fields of the Second Byurakan Survey (SBS). This article deals with the irregular galaxy SBS 1202+583, which our classification scheme identifies as being in a continuous phase of starformation. Observations were made with the panoramic spectrographs MPFS at the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) of the Russian Academy of Sciences and VAGR at the 2.6-m telescope of the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory (BAO) in Armenia. The data are used to construct charts of the radiative fluxes in the continuum and various emission lines. Special attention is devoted to analyzing the emission in the Hα hydrogen recombination line and in the forbidden low-ionization doublets of nitrogen [NII]λλ6548, 6583 and sulfur [SII]λλ 6716,6731, and the ratios of the intensities of the forbidden lines to Hα. The observable characteristics (sizes, Hα fluxes, etc.) of nine HII regions are studied. The estimated current rates of starformation in the individual HII regions based on the Hα fluxes lie within the range of 0.3-1.2 Msun/year. The dependence of the ratio of the intensities of the emission in these two forbidden doublets on the rate of star formation in the HII regions is found.

Formation of Ionization-Cone Structures in Active Galactic Nuclei: I. Stationary Model and Linear Stability Analysis

We discuss causes of the formation of the observed kinematics and morphology of cones of ionized matter in the neighborhood of the nuclei of Seyfert galaxies. The results of linear stability analysis of an optically thin conic jet where radiation cooling and gravity play an important part are reported. The allowance for radiation cooling is shown to result in strong damping of all acoustic modes and to have insignificant effect on unstable surface Kelvin--Helmholtz modes. In the case of waveguide--resonance internal gravity modes radiative cooling suppresses completely the instability of waves propagating away from the ejection source and, vice versa, reduces substantially the growth time scale of unstable sourceward propagating modes. The results obtained can be used to study ionization cones in Seyfert galaxies with radio jets. In particular, our analysis shows that surface Kelvin--Helmholtz modes and volume harmonics are capable of producing regular features observed in optical emission-line images of such galaxies.

Formation of Ionization-Cone Structures in Active Galactic Nuclei: II. Nonlinear Hydrodynamic Modelling

In Part I of this paper we described an equilibrium model of a jet in the gravitational field corresponding to the rigid-rotation region of the galactic disk. We used linear stability analysis to find the waveguide-resonance instability of internal gravity waves due to the superreflection of these waves from the jet boundary. In this part of the paper, we perform nonlinear numerical 2D and 3D simulations of the development of this instability. We show that the shocks produced by this instability in the ambient medium of the jet are localized inside a cone with a large opening angle and are capable of producing features that are morphologically similar to those observed in galaxies with active nuclei (NGC 5252 for example).

New photometric and spectroscopic observations of the Seyfert galaxy Mrk 315

We present new important results about the intermediate-type Seyfert galaxy Mrk 315, recently observed through optical imaging and integral-field spectroscopy. Broad-band images were used to study the morphology of the host galaxy, narrow-band H-alpha images to trace the star forming regions, and middle-band [O III] images to evidence the distribution of the highly ionised gas. Some extended emission regions were isolated and their physical properties studied by means of flux calibrated spectra. High resolution spectroscopy was used to separate different kinematic components in the velocity fields of gas and stars. Some peculiar features characterise this apparently undisturbed and moderately isolated active galaxy. Such features, already investigated by other authors, are re-analysed and discussed in the light of these new observations. The most relevant results we obtained are: the multi-tiers structure of the disc; the presence of a quasi-ring of regions with star formation much higher than previous claims; a secondary nucleus confirmed by a stellar component kinematically decoupled by the main galaxy; a new hypothesis about the controversial nature of the long filament, initially described as hook-shaped, and more likely made of two independent filaments caused by interaction events between the main galaxy and two dwarf companions.

The peculiar galaxy Mkn 298 revisited through integral field spectroscopy

Spectroscopic and imaging data of the peculiar galaxy Mkn 298 are presented in this paper. Narrow-band Halpha and broad-band R images are used to study the star formation rate in the galaxy and its morphology, which is typical of a merging system. Long-slit and integral field spectra are used to assess the kinematics of gas and stars, and the nature of the ionizing source at different distances from the nucleus. In particular, the nucleus of Mkn 298 is characterized by peculiar line ratios: [NII] 6583/Halpha is typical of HII-like regions, while [OI] 6300/Halpha could indicate the presence of an active galactic nucleus. We show that models where a shock component is added to photoionization from a starburst allow to reproduce the observed line ratios. Mkn 298 is thus most likely a star forming galaxy, rather than a galaxy hosting an active nucleus.
