Catalog of variable stars in the WD 0009+501 and GRW +708247 fields based on photometric survey data on transiting exoplanets

We present a catalog of 150 variable stars, including 13 stars with exoplanet candidates. 37 stars were identified as variables for the first time. As a result of a 2.5-year photometric survey of exoplanets, we have obtained and analyzed light curves for almost 50 thousand stars in fields around white dwarfs WD 0009+501 and GRW +708247. Here we describe observations and data processing, the search for variable stars, their cross-identification with other catalogs and classification. The catalog is published in open access and contains the primary classification of variability, light curves and their parameters.

Eight exoplanet candidates in SAO survey

Here we present eight new candidates for exoplanets detected by the transit method at the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Photometric observations were performed with a 50-cm robotic telescope during the second half of 2020. We detected transits with depths of $Δm = 0.056-0.173^m$ and periods $P = 18.8^h-8.3^d$ in the light curves of stars with magnitudes of $m = 14.3-18.8^m$. All considered stars are classified as dwarfs with radii of $R_* = 0.4-0.6 R_{sun}$ (with the uncertainty for one star up to $1.1 R_{sun}$). We estimated the candidate radii (all are greater than 1.4 times the Jovian radius), semi-major axes of their orbits ($0.012-0.035 AU$), and other orbital parameters by modelling. We report the light curves with transits for two stars obtained in 2022 based on individual observations.

Exoplanet two square degree survey with SAO RAS robotic facilities

We used the 0.5-m robotic telescopes located at the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences for monitoring two square degrees of the sky with the aim of detecting new exoplanets. A dimming of the visible brightness is expected due to the exoplanets transiting their host stars. We analyzed about 25000 raw images of stars taken in the period between August 2020 and January 2021 and plotted the light curves for about 30000 stars on a half-year timescale. Five newly discovered exoplanet candidates are being investigated to determine their transit event parameters. We also present the light curves for dozens of binary stars.

Ultraluminous X-Ray Sources

Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) were identified as a separate class of objects in 2000 based on data from the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. These are unique objects: their X-ray luminosities exceed the Eddington limit for a typical stellar-mass black hole. For a long time, the nature of ULXs remained unclear. However, the gradual accumulation of data, new results of X-ray and optical spectroscopy, and the study of the structure and energy of nebulae surrounding ULXs led to the understanding that most of the ultraluminous X-ray sources must be supercritical accretion disks like SS 433. The discovery of neutron stars in a number of objects only increased the confidence of the scientific community in the conclusions obtained, since the presence of neutron stars in such systems clearly indicates a supercritical accretion regime. In this review, we systematize the main facts about the observational manifestations of ULXs and SS 433 in the X-ray and optical ranges and discuss their explanation from the point of view of the supercritical accretion theory.

Moderate-Resolution Holographic Spectrograph

We present a new scheme of a moderate-resolution spectrograph based on a cascade of serial holographic gratings each of which produces an individual spectrum with a resolution of about 6000 and a bandwidth of 80 nm. The gratings ensure centering of each part of the spectrum they produce so as to provide uniform coverage of the broadest possible wavelength interval. In this study we manage to simultaneously cover the 430-680 nm interval without gaps using three gratings. Efficiency of the spectrograph optical system itself from the entrance slit to the CCD detector is typically of about 60 % with a maximum of 75 %. We discuss the advantages and drawbacks of the new spectrograph scheme as well as the astrophysical tasks for which the instrument can be used.

Superbroad Component in Emission Lines of SS 433

We have detected new components in stationary emission lines of SS 433; these are the superbroad components that are low-contrast substrates with a width of 2000--2500 km s-1 in He I $\lambda4922$ and H$β$ and 4000--5000 km s-1 in He II $\lambda4686$. Based on 44 spectra taken during four years of observations from 2003 to 2007, we have found that these components in the He II and He I lines are eclipsed by the donor star; their behavior with precessional and orbital phases is regular and similar to the behavior of the optical brightness of SS 433. The same component in H$β$ shows neither eclipses nor precessional variability. We conclude that the superbroad components in the helium and hydrogen lines are different in origin. Electron scattering is shown to reproduce well the superbroad component of H$β$ at a gas temperature of 20--35 kK and an optical depth for Thomson scattering $τ\approx$ 0.25--0.35. The superbroad components of the helium lines are probably formed in the wind from the supercritical accretion disk. We have computed a wind model based on the concept of Shakura-Sunyaev supercritical disk accretion. The main patterns of the He II line profiles are well reproduced in this model: not only the appearance of the superbroad component but also the evolution of the central two-component part of the profile of this line during its eclipse by the donor star can be explained.

Two New LBV Candidates in the M33 Galaxy

We present two new luminous blue variable (LBV) candidate stars discovered in the M33 galaxy. We identified these stars (Valeev et al. 2010) as massive star candidates at the final stages of evolution, presumably with a notable interstellar extinction. The candidates were selected from the Massey et al. (2006) catalog based on the following criteria: emission in Halpha, V<18.5 and 0.35<(B-V)<1.2. The spectra of both stars reveal a broad and strong Halpha emission with extended wings (770 and 1000 km/s). Based on the spectra we estimated the main parameters of the stars. Object N45901 has a bolometric luminosity log(L/Lsun)=6.0-6.2 with the value of interstellar extinction Av=2.3+-0.1. The temperature of the star's photosphere is estimated as Tstar~13000-15000K its probable mass on the Zero Age Main Sequence is M~60-80Msun. The infrared excess in N45901 corresponds to the emission of warm dust with the temperature Twarm~1000K, and amounts to 0.1% of the bolometric luminosity. A comparison of stellar magnitude estimates from different catalogs points to the probable variability of the object N45901. Bolometric luminosity of the second object, N125093, is log(L/Lsun)=6.3-6.6, the value of interstellar extinction is Av=2.75+-0.15. We estimate its photosphere's temperature as Tstar~13000-16000K, the initial mass as M~90-120Msun. The infrared excess in N125093 amounts to 5-6% of the bolometric luminosity. Its spectral energy distribution reveals two thermal components with the temperatures Twarm~1000K and Tcold~480K. The [CaII] lines (7291A and 7323A), observed in LBV-like stars VarA and N93351 in M33, are also present in the spectrum of N125093. These lines indicate relatively recent gas eruptions and dust activity linked with them. High bolometric luminosity of these stars and broad Halpha emissions allow classifying the studied objects as LBV candidates.

Statistics of Magnetic Fields for OB Stars

Based on an analysis of the catalog of magnetic fields, we have investigated the statistical properties of the mean magnetic fields for OB stars. We show that the mean effective magnetic field ${\cal B}$ of a star can be used as a statistically significant characteristic of its magnetic field. No correlation has been found between the mean magnetic field strength ${\cal B}$ and projected rotational velocity of OB stars, which is consistent with the hypothesis about a fossil origin of the magnetic field. We have constructed the magnetic field distribution function for B stars, $F({\cal B})$, that has a power-law dependence on ${\cal B}$ with an exponent of $\approx -1.82$. We have found a sharp decrease in the function $F({\cal B})$F for ${\cal B}\lem 400 G$ that may be related to rapid dissipation of weak stellar surface magnetic fields.

Investigation of the New Local Group Galaxy VV 124

We present the results of our stellar photometry and spectroscopy for the new Local Group galaxy VV 124 (UGC 4879) obtained with the 6-m BTA telescope. The presence of a few bright supergiants in the galaxy indicates that the current star formation process is weak. The apparent distribution of stars with different ages in VV 124 does not differ from the analogous distributions of stars in irregular galaxies, but the ratio of the numbers of young and old stars indicates that VV 124 belongs to the rare Irr/Sph type of galaxies. The old stars (red giants) form the most extended structure, a thick disk with an exponential decrease in the star number density to the edge. Definitely, the young population unresolvable in images makes a great contribution to the background emission from the central galactic regions. The presence of young stars is also confirmed by the [O III] emission line visible in the spectra that belongs to extensive diffuse galactic regions. The mean radial velocity of several components (two bright supergiants, the unresolvable stellar population, and the diffuse gas) is v_h = -70+/-15 km/s and the velocity with which VV 124 falls into the Local Group is v_LG = -12+/-15 km/s. We confirm the distance to the galaxy D = 1.1+/-0.1 Mpc and the metallicity of red giants ([Fe/H] = -1.37) found by Kopylov et al. (2008).VV 124 is located on the periphery of the Local Group approximately at the same distance from M 31 and our Galaxy and is isolated from other galaxies. The galaxy LeoA nearest to it is 0.5 Mpc away.

CP and related phenomena in the context of Stellar Evolution

We review the interaction in intermediate and high mass stars between their evolution and magnetic and chemical properties. We describe the theory of Ap-star `fossil' fields, before touching on the expected secular diffusive processes which give rise to evolution of the field. We then present recent results from a spectropolarimetric survey of Herbig Ae/Be stars, showing that magnetic fields of the kind seen on the main-sequence already exist during the pre-main sequence phase, in agreement with fossil field theory, and that the origin of the slow rotation of Ap/Bp stars also lies early in the pre-main sequence evolution; we also present results confirming a lack of stars with fields below a few hundred gauss. We then seek which macroscopic motions compete with atomic diffusion in determining the surface abundances of AmFm stars. While turbulent transport and mass loss, in competition with atomic diffusion, are both able to explain observed surface abundances, the interior abundance distribution is different enough to potentially lead to a test using asterosismology. Finally we review progress on the turbulence-driving and mixing processes in stellar radiative zones.

Warped polar ring in the Arp 212 galaxy

The Fabry-Perot scanning interferometer mounted on the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences is used to study the distribution and kinematics of ionized gas in the peculiar galaxy Arp 212 (NGC 7625, III Zw 102). Two kinematically distinct subsystems - the inner disk and outer emission filaments, are found within the optical radius of the galaxy. The first subsystem, at galactocentric distances r<3.5 kpc, rotates in the plane of the stellar disk. The inner part of the ionized-gas disk (r<1.5-2 kpc) exactly coincides with the previously known disk consisting of molecular gas. The second subsystem of ionized gas is located at galactocentric distances 2-6 kpc. This subsystem rotates in a plane tilted by a significant angle to the stellar disk. The angle of orbital inclination in the outer disk increases with galactocentric distance and reaches 50 degrees at r=6 kpc. The ionized fraction of the gaseous disk does not show up beyond this galactocentric distance, but we believe that the HI disk continues to warp and approaches the plane that is polar with respect to the inner disk of the galaxy. Hence Arp 212 can be classified as a galaxy with a polar ring (or a polar disk). The observed kinematics of the ionized and neutral gas can be explained assuming that the distribution of gravitational potential in the galaxy is not spherically symmetric. Most probably, the polar ring have formed via accretion of gas from the dwarf satellite galaxy UGC 12549.

Microvariability of Line Profiles in the Spectra of OB Stars II: $δ$Ori A

We have studied variability of the spectral lines of the OB star $δ$Ori A--the brightest component of the $δ$Ori triple system. Forty spectra with signal-to-noise ratios $\approx$500--800 and a time resolution of four minutes were obtained. We detected variability in the HeII$ λ4686$, HeI$ λ$4713 and H$β$ absorption and the CIII$ λ$5696 emission line profiles. The amplitude of the variability is $\approx$(0.5--1)% of the continuum intensity. The dynamical wavelet spectrum of the profile variations reveals large-scale components in the interval 25--50 km/s that move within the -$V\sin i$ to $V\sin i$ band for the primary star of the system, Aa$^1$, with a band crossing time of 4$^h$--5$^h$. However, some of the variable features go outside the band, presumably due to either imhomogeneities in the stellar wind from $δ$Ori Aa$^1$ or non-radial pulsations of the weaker components of the system, Aa$^2$ or Ab. The detected variability may by cyclic with a period of $\approx 4^h$ . We suggest that it is associated with non-radial pulsations of the primary in the sector mode $(l, m)=(2,-2)$.

Optical observations of type IIP supernova 2004dj: Evidence for the asymmetry of $^{56}$Ni ejecta

The photometric and spectroscopic observations of nearby type IIP supernova 2004dj are presented. The $^{56}$Ni mass estimated from the light curve is $\approx0.02 M_{\odot}$. This estimate is found to be consistent with the H$α$ luminosity. SN2004dj reveals a strong asymmetry of the H$α$ emission line at the nebular epoch with the shift of the maximum of -1600 km s$^{-1}$. A similar asymmetric component is detected in H$β$, [O I] and [Ca II] lines. The line asymmetry is interpreted as a result of the asymmetry of $^{56}$Ni ejecta. The H$α$ profile and its evolution are reproduced in the model of the asymmetric bipolar $^{56}$Ni and spherical hydrogen distributions. The mass of the front $^{56}$Ni jet is comparable to the central component and twice as larger compared to the rear $^{56}$Ni jet. We note that the asymmetric bipolar structure of of $^{56}$Ni ejecta is revealed also by SN1999em, another type IIP supernova.

INTEGRAL observations of SS433: Results of coordinated campaign

Results of simultaneous INTEGRAL and optical observations of galactic microquasar SS433 in May 2003 and INTEGRAL/RXTE observations in March 2004 are presented. Persistent precessional variability with a maximum to minimum uneclipsed hard X-ray flux ratio of \sim 4 is discovered. The 18-60 keV X-ray eclipse is found to be in phase with optical and near infrared eclipses. The orbital eclipse observed by INTEGRAL in May 2003 is at least two times deeper and apparently wider than in soft X-ray band. The broadband X-ray spectrum 2-100 keV simultaneously detected by RXTE/INTEGRAL in March 2004 can be described by bremsstrahlung emission from optically thin thermal plasma with kT\sim 30 keV. The optical spectroscopy with the 6-m SAO BTA telescope confirmed the optical companion to be an A5-A7 supergiant. For the first time, spectorscopic indications of a strong heating effect in the optical star atmosphere are found. The measurements of absorption lines which are presumably formed in the non-illuminated side of the supergiant yield its radial velocity semi-amplitude K_v=132\pm 9 km/s. The analysis of the observed hard X-ray light curve and the eclipse duration, combined with spectroscopically found optical star radial velocity corrected for the strong heating effect, allows us to model SS433 as a massive X-ray binary. Assuming that the hard X-ray source in SS433 is eclipsed by the donor star that exactly fills its Roche lobe, the masses of the optical and compact components in SS433 are suggested to be M_v\approx 30 M_\odot and M_x\approx 9M_\odot, respectively. This provides further evidence that SS433 is a massive binary system with supercritical accretion onto a black hole.

Coordinated INTEGRAL and optical observations of SS433

Results of simultaneous {\it INTEGRAL} and optical observations of galactic microquasar SS433 in May 2003 are presented. The analysis of the X-ray and optical eclipse duration and hard X-ray spectra obtained by {\it INTEGRAL} together with optical spectroscopy obtained on the 6-m telescope allows us to construct a model of SS433 as a massive X-ray binary. X-ray eclipse in hard X-rays has a depth of $\sim 80%$ and extended wings. The optical spectroscopy allows us to identify the optical companion as a A5-A7 supergiant and to measure its radial velocity semi-amplitude $K_v=132$ km/s. A strong heating effect in the optical star atmosphere is discovered spectroscopically. The observed broadband X-ray spectrum 2-100 keV can be described by emission from optically thin thermal plasma with $kT\sim 15-20 keV$

Two new bright Ae stars

Two newly identified Ae stars, nu Cyg and kappa UMa, were discovered in the course of the Magnetic Survey of Bright MS stars (Monin et al. 2002). We pre sent their Halpha profiles along with measurements of their equivalent width and parameters of emission features. Emission in the Halpha line of nu Cyg is variable on a time scale of 3 years. kappa UMa exhibits weak emission which is rather stable. The emission is thought to arise from a circumstellar disk, and we have estimated the size of that disk. Both new emission stars are IRAS sources. Their IR color excesses are consistent with those of classical Ae stars. Thus, nu Cyg and kappa UMa appear not to belong to the class of Herbig Ae/Be stars. We argue that the frequency of Ae stars may be underestimated due to the difficulty of detection of weak emission in some A stars.

Possible detection of a magnetic field in T Tauri

Medium-resolution $(R\simeq 15000)$ circular spectropolarimetry of T Tauri is presented. The star was observed twice: on November 11, 1996 and January 22, 2002. Weak circular polarization has been found in photospheric absorption lines, indicating a mean surface longitudinal magnetic field $B_{\|}$ of $160\pm 40$ G and $140\pm 50$ G at the epoch of the first and second observations respectively. While these values are near the detection limit of our apparatus, we belive that they are real. In any case one can conclude from our data that $B_{\|}$ of T Tau does not significantly exceed 200 G, which is much less than surface magnetic field strength of the star ($>2.3$ kG) found by Guenther et al. (1999) and Johns-Krull et al. (2000). We discuss possible reasons of this difference.
