Backward-angle electroproduction of $η'$ mesons off protons at $W=2.13~\text{GeV}$ and $Q^{2}=0.46~\left(\text{GeV}/c\right)^{2}$

The electroproduction of $η'$ mesons from a $\mathrm{^{1}H}$ target at $W=2.13~\text{GeV}$, $Q^{2} = 0.46~\left( \text{GeV}/c\right)^{2}$ and $\cos θ^{\text{CM}}_{γ^{*}η'} \approx -1$ has been experimentally measured. The differential cross section of virtual-photoproduction has been obtained as $4.4 \pm 0.8 ~\left( \text{stat.} \right) \pm 0.4 ~\left( \text{sys.} \right)~ \text{nb/sr}$ in the One-Photon-Exchange Approximation. This value is one-sixth of that of real-photoproduction at backward angles. A comparison with newly-developed isobar model calculations not only shows validity of the theoretical framewark employed, but also imposes new constrains on coupling strength between the $η'p$ final state and nucleon resonances.

Picosecond resolution photoelectron emission lifetime detection system

This paper describes a new photoelectron emission lifetime detection system. It is based on a recently developed Radio Frequency Timing technique of keV electrons and a 40 MHz, ultrafast pulsed laser. The photoelectron emission lifetimes from gold, monolayer MoS$_2$ and monolayer graphene were measured. As expected, we do not observe delayed electrons from gold, and the time distribution of the produced photoelectrons represents the time resolution of the device, which is $\sim$12~ps. From the graphene, we observed delayed photoelectrons with a lifetime of $\sim$189~ps.

Electroproduction of the Lambda/Sigma^0 hyperons at Q^2~0.5 (GeV/c)^2 at forward angles

In 2018, the E12-17-003 experiment was conducted at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) to explore the possible existence of an nnLambda state in the reconstructed missing mass distribution from a tritium gas target [K. N. Suzuki et al., Prog. Theor. Exp. Phys. 2022, 013D01 (2022), B. Pandey et al., Phys. Rev. C 105, L051001 (2022)]. As part of this investigation, data was also collected using a gaseous hydrogen target, not only for a precise absolute mass scale calibration but also for the study of Lambda/Sigma^0 electroproduction. This dataset was acquired at Q^2~0.5 (GeV/c)^2, W=2.14 GeV, and theta_{gamma K}^{c.m.}~8 deg. It covers forward angles where photoproduction data is scarce and a low-Q^2 region that is of interest for hypernuclear experiments. On the other hand, this kinematic region is at a slightly higher Q^2 than previous hypernuclear experiments, thus providing crucial information for understanding the Q^2 dependence of the differential cross sections for Lambda/Sigma^0 hyperon electroproduction. This paper reports on the Q^2 dependence of the differential cross section for the e + p -> e' + K^+ + Lambda/Sigma^0 reaction in the 0.2-0.8 (GeV/c)^2, and provides comparisons with the currently available theoretical models.

High accuracy synchrotron radiation interferometry with relativistic electrons

A high-precision hypernuclear experiment has been performed at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI) to determine the hypertriton Λ binding energy via decay-pion spectroscopy. A key element of this measurement is an accurate calibration of the magnetic spectrometers with the MAMI beam. For such an absolute calibration with small statistical and systematic uncertainties the undulator light interference method will be applied. In this contribution the basic principle of this method is discussed and the analysis status of the measured synchrotron radiation spectra is presented

The cross-section measurement for the $^3{\textrm H}(e,e'K^+)nnΛ$ reaction

The small binding energy of the hypertrition leads to predictions of non-existence of bound hypernuclei for isotriplet three-body systems such as $nnΛ$. However, invariant mass spectroscopy at GSI has reported events that may be interpreted as the bound $nnΛ$ state. The $nnΛ$ state was sought by missing-mass spectroscopy via the $(e,e'K^+)$ reaction at Jefferson Lab's experimental Hall A. The present experiment has higher sensitivity to the $nnΛ$-state investigation in terms of better precision by a factor of about three. The analysis shown in this article focuses on the derivation of the reaction cross-section for the $^3{\rm{H}}(γ^{*},K^+)\textrm{X}$ reaction. Events that were detected in an acceptance, where a Monte Carlo simulation could reproduce the data well ($|δp/p| < 4\%$), were analyzed to minimize the systematic uncertainty. No significant structures were observed with the acceptance cuts, and the upper limits of the production cross-section of the $nnΛ$ state were obtained to be $21$ and $31~\rm{nb/sr}$ at the $90\%$ confidence level when theoretical predictions of $(-B_Λ, Γ) = (0.25,0.8)$ and $(0.55, 4.7)$ MeV, respectively, were assumed. The cross-section result provides valuable information for examining the existence of $nnΛ$.

Systematic treatment of hypernuclear data and application to the hypertriton

A database is under construction to provide a complete collection of published basic properties of hypernuclei such as Λ binding energies, lifetimes, or excitation energies. From these values, averages with related errors are computed in a systematic way. For each property, the overall experimental situation is depicted in form of an ideogram showing the combined probability density function of the measurements. The database is accessible via a dynamic website at https://hypernuclei.kph.uni-mainz.de with an user interface offering customizable visualizations, selections, or unit conversions. The capabilities of the database are demonstrated for the puzzling and disputed data situation of the hypertriton.

Spectroscopy of $A=9$ hyperlithium by the $(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})$ reaction

Missing mass spectroscopy with the $(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})$ reaction was performed at Jefferson Laboratory's Hall C for the neutron rich $Λ$ hypernucleus $^{9}_Λ{\rm Li}$. The ground state energy was obtained to be $B_Λ^{\rm g.s.}=8.84\pm0.17^{\rm stat.}\pm0.15^{\rm sys.}~{\rm MeV}$ by using shell model calculations of a cross section ratio and an energy separation of the spin doublet states ($3/2^{+}_1$ and $5/2^{+}_1$). In addition, peaks that are considered to be states of [$^{8}{\rm Li}(3^{+})\otimes s_Λ=3/2^{+}_{2}, 1/2^{+}$] and [$^{8}{\rm Li}(1^{+})\otimes s_Λ=5/2^{+}_{2}, 7/2^{+}$] were observed at $E_Λ({\rm no.~2})=1.74\pm0.27^{\rm stat.}\pm0.11^{\rm sys.}~{\rm MeV}$ and $E_Λ({\rm no.~3})=3.30\pm0.24^{\rm stat.}\pm0.11^{\rm sys.}~{\rm MeV}$, respectively. The $E_Λ({\rm no.~3})$ is larger than shell model predictions by a few hundred keV, and the difference would indicate that a ${\rm ^{5}He}+t$ structure is more developed for the $3^{+}$ state than those for the $2^{+}$ and $1^{+}$ states in a core nucleus $^{8}{\rm Li}$ as a cluster model calculation suggests.

Decay pion spectroscopy: a new approach

We propose a new experiment for decay pion spectroscopy of light hypernuclei at electron- and proton-beam facilities, using the recoil distance technique for separation of produced hypernuclei and a magnetic spectrometer for precise measurement of the decay pion momentum. Low-pressure MWPCs are advocated for low-energy recoil detection as they provide position and time information and are highly insensitive to gamma-ray and electron background. The position and timing characteristics of such a recoil detector were studied using ~5 MeV α-particles. By using the present proposed approach the rate of the detected hypernuclei can be increased by one-to-two orders of magnitude compared to a recent experiment carried out at the MAMI electron accelerator in Mainz. The possibility of realizing a high luminosity decay pion spectroscopy experiment with proton beams is also discussed.

Revealing Color Forces with Transverse Polarized Electron Scattering

The Spin Asymmetries of the Nucleon Experiment (SANE) measured two double spin asymmetries using a polarized proton target and polarized electron beam at two beam energies, 4.7 GeV and 5.9 GeV. A large-acceptance open-configuration detector package identified scattered electrons at 40$^{\circ}$ and covered a wide range in Bjorken $x$ ($0.3 < x < 0.8$). Proportional to an average color Lorentz force, the twist-3 matrix element, $\tilde{d}_2^p$, was extracted from the measured asymmetries at $Q^2$ values ranging from 2.0 to 6.0 GeV$^2$. The data display the opposite sign compared to most quark models, including the lattice QCD result, and an apparently unexpected scale dependence. Furthermore when combined with the neutron data in the same $Q^2$ range the results suggest a flavor independent average color Lorentz force.

Precision beam energy measurement by undulator radiation at MAMI

A novel interferometric method for absolute beam energy measurement is under development at MAMI. At the moment, the method is tested and optimized at an energy of 195 MeV. Despite the very small statistical uncertainty of the method, systematic effects have limited the overall accuracy. Recently, a measurement has been performed dedicated to the evaluation of these effects. This report comprises a description of the method and results of the recent data taking period.

Novel optical interferometry of synchrotron radiation for absolute electron beam energy measurements

A novel interferometric method is presented for the measurement of the absolute energy of electron beams. In the year 2016, a pioneering experiment was performed using a 195 MeV beam of the Mainz Microtron (MAMI). The experimental setup consisted of two collinear magnetic undulators as sources of coherent optical synchrotron light and a high-resolving grating monochromator. Beam energy measurements required the variation of the relative undulator distance in the decimeter range and the analysis of the intensity oscillation length in the interference spectrum. A statistical precision of 1 keV was achieved in 1 hour of data taking, while systematic uncertainties of 700 keV were present in the experiment. These developments aim for a relative precision of $10^{-5}$ in the absolute momentum calibrations of spectrometers and high-precision hypernuclear experiments. Other electron accelerators with beam energies in this regime such as the Mainz Energy Recovering Superconducting Accelerator (MESA) might benefit from this new method.

Proton Form Factor Ratio, $μ_p G_E^p/G_M^p$ from Double Spin Asymmetry

The ratio of the electric and magnetic form factor of the proton, $μ_p G_E^p/G_M^p$, has been measured for elastic electron-proton scattering with polarized beam and target up to four-momentum transfer squared, $Q^2=5.66$ (GeV/c)$^2$ using the double spin asymmetry for target spin orientation aligned nearly perpendicular to the beam momentum direction. This measurement of $μ_p G_E^p/G_M^p$ agrees with the $Q^2$ dependence of previous recoil polarization data and reconfirms the discrepancy at high $Q^2$ between the Rosenbluth and the polarization-transfer method with a different measurement technique and systematic uncertainties uncorrelated to those of the recoil-polarization measurements. The form factor ratio at $Q^2$=2.06 (GeV/c)$^2$ has been measured as $μ_p G_E^p/G_M^p = 0.720 \pm 0.176_{stat} \pm 0.039_{sys}$, which is in agreement with an earlier measurement with the polarized target technique at similar kinematics. The form factor ratio at $Q^2$=5.66 (GeV/c)$^2$ has been determined as $μ_p G_E^p/G_M^p=0.244\pm0.353_{stat}\pm0.013_{sys}$, which represents the highest $Q^2$ reach with the double spin asymmetry with polarized target to date.

Experimental techniques and performance of $Λ$-hypernuclear spectroscopy with the $(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})$ reaction

The missing-mass spectroscopy of $Λ$ hypernuclei via the $(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})$ reaction has been developed through experiments at JLab Halls A and C in the last two decades. For the latest experiment, E05-115 in Hall C, we developed a new spectrometer system consisting of the HKS and HES; resulting in the best energy resolution ($E_Λ \simeq0.5$-MeV FWHM) and $B_Λ$ accuracy ($B_Λ\leq0.2$ MeV) in $Λ$-hypernuclear reaction spectroscopy. This paper describes the characteristics of the $(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})$ reaction compared to other reactions and experimental methods. In addition, the experimental apparatus, some of the important analyses such as the semi-automated calibration of absolute energy scale, and the performance achieved in E05-115 are presented.

Design and Performance of the Spin Asymmetries of the Nucleon Experiment

The Spin Asymmetries of the Nucleon Experiment (SANE) performed inclusive, double-polarized electron scattering measurements of the proton at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility at Jefferson Lab. A novel detector array observed scattered electrons of four-momentum transfer $2.5 < Q^2< 6.5$ GeV$^2$ and Bjorken scaling $0.3<x<0.8$ from initial beam energies of 4.7 and 5.9 GeV. Employing a polarized proton target whose magnetic field direction could be rotated with respect to the incident electron beam, both parallel and near perpendicular spin asymmetries were measured, allowing model-independent access to transverse polarization observables $A_1$, $A_2$, $g_1$, $g_2$ and moment $d_2$ of the proton. This document summarizes the operation and performance of the polarized target, polarized electron beam, and novel detector systems used during the course of the experiment, and describes analysis techniques utilized to access the physics observables of interest.

Neutral Kaon Spectrometer 2

A large-acceptance spectrometer, Neutral Kaon Spectrometer 2 (NKS2), was newly constructed to explore various photoproduction reactions in the gigaelectronvolt region at the Laboratory of Nuclear Science (LNS, currently ELPH), Tohoku University. The spectrometer consisted of a dipole magnet, drift chambers, and plastic scintillation counters. NKS2 was designed to separate pions and protons in a momentum range of less than 1 GeV/$c$, and was placed in a tagged photon beamline. A cryogenic H$_{2}$/D$_{2}$ target fitted to the spectrometer were designed. The design and performance of the detectors are described. The results of the NKS2 experiment on analyzing strangeness photoproduction data using a 0.8--1.1 GeV tagged photon beam are also presented.

Spectroscopy of the neutron-rich hypernucleus $^{7}_Λ$He from electron scattering

The missing mass spectroscopy of the $^{7}_Λ$He hypernucleus was performed, using the $^{7}$Li$(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})^{7}_Λ$He reaction at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility Hall C. The $Λ$ binding energy of the ground state (1/2$^{+}$) was determined with a smaller error than that of the previous measurement, being $B_Λ$ = 5.55 $\pm$ 0.10(stat.) $\pm$ 0.11(sys.) MeV. The experiment also provided new insight into charge symmetry breaking in p-shell hypernuclear systems. Finally, a peak at $B_Λ$ = 3.65 $\pm$ 0.20(stat.) $\pm$ 0.11(sys.) MeV was observed and assigned as a mixture of 3/2$^{+}$ and 5/2$^{+}$ states, confirming the "gluelike" behavior of $Λ$, which makes an unstable state in $^{6}$He stable against neutron emission.
