Path integral representation for the Hubbard model with reduced number of Lefschetz thimbles

The concept of Lefschetz thimble decomposition is one of the most promising possible modifications of Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) algorithms aimed at alleviating the sign problem which appears in many interesting physical situations, e.g. in the Hubbard model away from half filling. In this approach one utilizes the fact that the integral over real variables with an integrand containing a complex fluctuating phase is equivalent to the sum of integrals over special manifolds in complex space ("Lefschetz thimbles"), each of them having a fixed complex phase factor. Thus, the sign problem can be reduced if the resulting sum contains terms with only a few different phases. We explore the complexity of the sign problem for the few-site Hubbard model on square lattice combining a semi-analytical study of saddle points and thimbles in small lattices with several steps in Euclidean time with results of test QMC calculations. We check different variants of conventional Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation based on Gaussian integrals. On the basis of our analysis we reveal a regime with minimal number of relevant thimbles in the vicinity of half filling. In this regime we found only two relevant thimbles for the few-site lattices studied in the paper. There is also indirect evidence of the existence of this regime in more realistic systems with large number of Euclidean time slices. In addition, we derive a new non-Gaussian representation of the interaction term, where the number of relevant Lefschetz is also reduced in comparison with conventional Gaussian Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation.

Lattice study of continuity and finite-temperature transition in two-dimensional SU(N) x SU(N) Principal Chiral Model

We present first-principle lattice study of the two-dimensional SU(N) x SU(N) Principal Chiral Model (PCM) on the cylinder R x S1 with variable compactification length L0 of S1 and with both periodic and ZN-symmetric twisted boundary conditions. For both boundary conditions our numerical results can be interpreted as signatures of a weak crossover or phase transition between the regimes of small and large L0. In particular, at small L0 thermodynamic quantities exhibit nontrivial dependence on L0, and the static correlation length exhibits a weak enhancement at some "critical" value of L0. We also observe important differences between the two boundary conditions, which indicate that the transition scenario is more likely in the periodic case than in the twisted one. In particular, the enhancement of correlation length for periodic boundary conditions becomes more pronounced at large N, and practically does not depend on N for twisted boundary conditions. Using Gradient Flow we study non-perturbative content of the theory and find that the peaks in the correlation length appear when the length L0 becomes comparable with the typical size of unitons, unstable saddle points of PCM. With twisted boundary conditions these saddle points become effectively stable and one-dimensional in the regime of small N L0, whereas at large N L0 they are very similar to the two-dimensional unitons with periodic boundary conditions. In the context of adiabatic continuity conjecture for PCM with twisted boundary conditions, our results suggest that while the effect of the compactification is clearly different for different boundary conditions, one still cannot exclude the possibility of a weak crossover separating the strong-coupling regime at large N L0 and the Dunne-Unsal regime at small N L0 with twisted boundary conditions.

First experience with classical-statistical real-time simulations of anomalous transport with overlap fermions

We present first results of classical-statistical real-time simulations of anomalous transport phenomena with overlap fermions. We find that even on small lattices overlap fermions reproduce the real-time anomaly equation with much better precision than Wilson-Dirac fermions on an order of magnitude larger lattices. The difference becomes much more pronounced for quickly changing electromagnetic fields, especially if one takes into account the back-reaction of fermions on electromagnetism. As test cases, we consider chirality pumping in parallel electric and magnetic fields and mixing between the plasmon and the Chiral Magnetic Wave.

Chiral Magnetic Effect in finite-size samples of parity-breaking Weyl semimetals

We study the static electric current due to the Chiral Magnetic Effect in samples of Weyl semimetals with slab geometry, where the magnetic field is parallel to the boundaries of the slab. We use the Wilson-Dirac Hamiltonian as a simplest model of parity-breaking Weyl semimetal with two-band structure. We find that the CME current is strongly localized at the open boundaries of the slab, where the current density in the direction of the magnetic field approaches the conventional value $j = μ_5 B /2 π^2$ at sufficiently small values of the chiral chemical potential $μ_5$ and magnetic field $B$. On the other hand, very large values of magnetic field tend to suppress the CME response. We observe that the localization width of the current is independent of the slab width and is given by the magnetic length $l_B = 1/\sqrt{B}$ when $μ_5 \ll \sqrt{B}$. In the opposite regime when $μ_5 \gg \sqrt{B}$ the localization width is determined solely by $μ_5$

Complex Saddles in Two-dimensional Gauge Theory

We study numerically the saddle point structure of two-dimensional (2D) lattice gauge theory, represented by the Gross-Witten-Wadia unitary matrix model. The saddle points are in general complex-valued, even though the original integration variables and action are real. We confirm the trans-series/instanton gas structure in the weak-coupling phase, and identify a new complex-saddle interpretation of non-perturbative effects in the strong-coupling phase. In both phases, eigenvalue tunneling refers to eigenvalues moving off the real interval, into the complex plane, and the weak-to-strong coupling phase transition is driven by saddle condensation.

Chiral magnetic conductivity in an interacting lattice model of parity-breaking Weyl semimetal

We report on the mean-field study of the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) in static magnetic fields within a simple model of a parity-breaking Weyl semimetal given by the lattice Wilson-Dirac Hamiltonian with constant chiral chemical potential. We consider both the mean-field renormalization of the model parameters and nontrivial corrections to the CME originating from re-summed ladder diagrams with arbitrary number of loops. We find that on-site repulsive interactions affect the chiral magnetic conductivity almost exclusively through the enhancement of the renormalized chiral chemical potential. Our results suggest that nontrivial corrections to the chiral magnetic conductivity due to inter-fermion interactions are not relevant in practice, since they only become important when the CME response is strongly suppressed by the large gap in the energy spectrum.

Lattice simulation of $QC_2D$ with $N_f=2$ at non-zero baryon density

The lattice simulations of $QC_2D$ with two flavors of staggered fermions and non-zero quark chemical potential $μ_q$ have been performed. Dependencies of the Polyakov loop, chiral condensate and baryon number density on $μ_q$ were studied. We found that an increase of the baryon chemical potential leads to chiral symmetry restoration. At small values of $μ_q$, our results for the baryon number density agree with ChPT predictions.

Numerical simulation of graphene in external magnetic field

In this paper the results of numerical simulation of monolayer graphene in external magnetic field are presented. The numerical simulation is performed in the effective lattice field theory with noncompact $3 + 1$-dimensional Abelian lattice gauge fields and $2 + 1$-dimensional staggered lattice fermions. The dependences of fermion condensate and graphene conductivity on the dielectric permittivity of substrate for different values of external magnetic field are calculated. It is found that magnetic field shifts insulator-semimetal phase transition to larger values of the dielectric permittivity of substrate. The phase diagram of graphene in external magnetic field is drawn.

The influence of defects on the conductivity of graphene within the effective theory approach

The results of the simulations by Monte Carlo method of graphene with structural defects are presented. The calculations are performed within an effective quantum field theory with non-compact $3\hm + 1$--dimensional Abelian gauge field and $2\hm + 1$--dimensional Kogut-Susskind fermions. It was found that defects shift the phase transition point semimetal-insulator towards higher values of a substrate permittivity.

Interaction of static charges in graphene within Monte-Carlo simulation

The study of the interaction potential between static charges within Monte-Carlo simulation of graphene is carried out. The numerical simulations are performed in the effective lattice field theory with noncompact $3 + 1$-dimensional Abelian lattice gauge fields and $2 + 1$-dimensional staggered lattice fermions. It is shown that for all considered temperatures the interaction can be well described by the Debye screened potential created by two-dimensional electron-hole excitations. At low temperatures Debye mass $m_D$ plays a role of order parameter of the insulator-semimetal phase transition. In the semimetal phase at high temperature graphene reveals the properties of weakly interacting two-dimensional plasma of fermions excitations.
