Studying of the interlayer interaction in magnetic multilayers (FM/I/FM) measuring the FMR peak asymmetry

We experimentally study the interlayer interaction in a magnetic multilayer system ferromagnet/insulator/ferromagnet with different spacer thickness. We demonstrate that the sign and the magnitude of the interaction can be deduced from the FMR peak shape rather than from the FMR peak shift. The proposed technique allows studying the interlayer interaction using a single sample (without a reference sample for comparison).

Peculiarities of superconducting properties of thin superconductor-normal metal bilayer with large ratio of resistivities

We demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, that thin dirty superconductor-normal metal bilayer with resistivity of normal metal $ρ_N$ much smaller than normal-state resistivity of superconductor $ρ_S$ has unique superconducting properties. First of all the normal layer provides the dominant contribution to the diamagnetic response of whole bilayer structure in wide temperature interval below the critical temperature due to proximity induced superconductivity. Secondly, the presence of the normal layer may increase the critical current $I_c$ in several times (the effect is not connected with enhanced vortex pinning), provides strong temperature dependence of both $I_c$ and effective magnetic field penetration depth even at temperatures much below the critical one and leads to the diode effect in parallel magnetic field. Besides of general interest we believe that the found results may be useful in construction of different kinds of superconducting detectors.

High magnetocaloric efficiency of a NiFe/NiCu/CoFe/MnIr multilayer in a small magnetic field

The isothermal magnetic entropy changes are studied in Ni80Fe20/Ni67Cu33/Co90Cu10/Mn80Ir20 stacks at temperatures near the Curie point of the Ni67Cu33 spacer by applying magnetic fields in a few tens of Oersted. Such low fields were sufficient for toggling magnetic moments in the soft ferromagnetic (FM) layer (Ni80Fe20). It is found out that this switching provides the magnetic entropy change, which is up to 20 times larger than that achievable in a single Ni67Cu33 film subjected to such low fields. Our finding holds promise to be utilized in the magnetocaloric devices that would be based on FM/PM/FM heterostructures and would operate with moderate magnetic fields.

Nonreciprocal transmission of neutrons through the noncoplanar magnetic system

We report on observation of the time reversal symmetry breaking in unpolarized neutrons scattering experiment. Neutron transmittivity through the system consisting of two magnetic mirrors placed in an external magnetic field is measured. Time reversal symmetry holds for coplanar magnetic configuration, meaning that transmitted intensity does not change when interchanging neutron source and detector. Contrarily, for noncoplanar magnetic configuration the time reversal symmetry breaks down. In this case the transmitted intensity changes when interchanging the source and detector. The observed time reversal symmetry breaking is the consequence of the one of the most fundamental properties of quantum mechanics, namely the non-commutativity of spin algebra.

Skyrmion-like states in multilayer exchange coupled ferromagnetic nanostructures with distinct anisotropy directions

We report the experimental observation of magnetic skyrmion-like states in patterned ferromagnetic nanostructures consisting of perpendicular magnetized Co/Pt multilayer film exchange coupled with Co nanodisks in vortex state. The magnetic force microscopy and micromagnetic simulations show that depending on the magnitude of Co/Pt perpendicular anisotropy in these systems two different modes of skyrmion formation are realized.

Noise-induced effects in magnetization reversal and chirality control of circular array of single-domained nanomagnets

The effect of noise on the process of high-speed remagnetization of vortex state of a pentagonal array of five circular magnetic nanoparticles is studied by means of computer simulation of Landau-Lifshits model. The mean switching time and its standard deviation of the reversal between the counterclockwise and clockwise vorticities have been computed. It has been demonstrated that with the reversal by the pulse with sinusoidal shape, the optimal pulse duration exists, which minimizes both the mean switching time (MST) and the standard deviation (SD). Besides, both MST and SD significantly depend on the angle between the reversal magnetic field and pentagon edge, and the optimal angle roughly equals 10 degrees. Also, it is demonstrated that the optimization of the angle, duration and the amplitude of the driving field leads to significant decrease of both MST and SD. In particular, for the considered parameters, the MST can be decreased from 60 ns to 2-3 ns. Such a chain of magnetic nanoparticles can effectively be used as an element of magnetoresistive memory, and at the temperature 300K the stable operation of the element is observed up to rather small size of nanoparticles with the raduis of 20 nm.

Strong influence of a magnetic layer on the critical current of Nb bridge in finite magnetic fields due to surface barrier effect

We measured the critical current of the bilayer Nb/Co in the applied magnetic field. When the magnetic field was tilted to the axis which was perpendicular to the plane of the bilayer we observed a large difference in critical currents flowing in opposite directions. We found that the largest critical current of the bilayer exceeded the critical current of the superconductor without Co layer in a wide range of the tilted magnetic fields. The theory which takes into account the surface barrier effect for vortex entry and magnetic field of the magnetic layer gave a quantitative explanation of our experimental results.

Noise-induced effects in high-speed reversal of magnetic dipole

The effect of noise on the reversal of a magnetic dipole is investigated on the basis of computer simulation of the Landau-Lifshits equation. It is demonstrated that at the reversal by the pulse with sinusoidal shape, there exists the optimal duration, which minimizes the mean reversal time (MRT) and the standard deviation (jitter). Both the MRT and the jitter significantly depend on the angle between the reversal magnetic field and the anisotropy axis. At the optimal angle the MRT can be decreased by 7 times for damping $α$=1 and up to 2 orders of magnitude for $α$=0.01, and the jitter can be decreased from 1 to 3 orders of magnitude in comparison with the uniaxial symmetry case.

Artificial helical nanomagnets

We demonstrate the existence of a helical state in patterned multilayer nanomagnets. The artificial helimagnets consist of a stack of single domain ferromagnetic disks separated by insulating nonmagnetic spacers. The spiral state is shown to originate from the magnetostatic interaction between nearest and next nearest neighbouring single-domain disks in the stack. Since the magnetostatic interaction for such disks is rather strong, the helical state should be stable at room temperature. The helimagnets were fabricated from a [Co/Si]*3 multilayer using electron beam lithography. The helical state was confirmed by a magnetic stray field analysis using magnetic force microscopy.

Commensurability effects in overlap Josephson junctions coupled with a magnetic dots array

Experimental observation of the strong influence of an array of ferromagnetic nanodots on the critical current of a short overlap Josephson junction is reported. Pronounced commensurability effects are detected due to the presence of the additional peaks in the magnetic field induced diffraction pattern. The changes in the Fraunhofer pattern of the Josephson junctions are account for by the formation of Abrikosov vortices trapped in the electrodes which induce a phase inhomogeneity in the junction area.

Considerable enhancement of the critical current in a superconducting film by magnetized magnetic strip

We show that a magnetic strip on top of a superconducting strip magnetized in a specified direction may considerably enhance the critical current in the sample. At fixed magnetization of the magnet we observed diode effect - the value of the critical current depends on the direction of the transport current. We explain these effects by a influence of the nonuniform magnetic field induced by the magnet on the current distribution in the superconducting strip. The experiment on a hybrid Nb/Co structure confirmed the predicted variation of the critical current with a changing value of magnetization and direction of the transport current.

Superconductivity controlled by the magnetic state of ferromagnetic nanoparticles

Novel hybrid superconductor/ferromagnetic particles structures are presented. Arrays of Co submicron particles were fabricated on overlap, edge type Josephson junctions and on a narrow Nb microbridge by means of high-resolution e-beam lithography. We observed a strong dependence between the magnetic state of the particles and the field-dependent critical $I_c(H)$ of these structures.
