Critical exponents in quantum Einstein gravity

The quantum Einstein gravity is treated by the functional renormalization group method using the Einstein-Hilbert action. The ultraviolet non-Gaussian fixed point is determined and its corresponding exponent of the correlation length is calculated for a wide range of regulators. It is shown that the exponent provides a minimal sensitivity to the parameters of the regulator which correspond to the Litim's regulator.

Some consequences of GUP induced ultraviolet wavevector cutoff in one-dimensional Quantum Mechanics

A projection method is proposed to treat the one-dimensional Schrodinger equation for a single particle when the Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) generates an ultraviolet (UV) wavevector cutoff. The existence of a unique coordinate representation called the naive one is derived from the one-parameter family of discrete coordinate representations. In this bandlimited Quantum Mechanics a continuous potential is reconstructed from discrete sampled values observed by means of a particle in maximally localized states. It is shown that bandlimitation modifies the speed of the center and the spreading time of a Gaussian wavepacket moving in free space. Indication is found that GUP accompanied by bandlimitation may cause departures of the low-lying energy levels of a particle in a box from those in ordinary Quantum Mechanics much less suppressed than commonly thought when GUP without bandlimitation is in work.

Critical exponents of the O(N) model in the infrared limit from functional renormalization

We determined the critical exponent $ν$ of the scalar O(N) model with a strategy based on the definition of the correlation length in the infrared limit. The functional renormalization group treatment of the model shows that there is an infrared fixed point in the broken phase. The appearing degeneracy induces a dynamical length scale there, which can be considered as the correlation length. It is shown that the IR scaling behavior can account either for the Ising type phase transition in the 3-dimensional O(N) model, or for the Kosterlitz-Thouless type scaling of the 2-dimensional O(2) model.

Infrared fixed point in quantum Einstein gravity

We performed the renormalization group analysis of the quantum Einstein gravity in the deep infrared regime for different types of extensions of the model. It is shown that an attractive infrared point exists in the broken symmetric phase of the model. It is also shown that due to the Gaussian fixed point the IR critical exponent $ν$ of the correlation length is 1/2. However, there exists a certain extension of the model which gives finite correlation length in the broken symmetric phase. It typically appears in case of models possessing a first order phase transitions as is demonstrated on the example of the scalar field theory with a Coleman-Weinberg potential.

Degeneracy induced scaling of the correlation length for periodic models

The broken symmetric phase of scalar models exhibits an infrared fixed point which is induced by the degenerate effective potential. The definition of the correlation length in the infrared regime enables us to determine the type of the phase transition in the model. It is shown that the massive sine-Gordon model exhibits a continuous, while the layered sine-Gordon model has an infinite order Kosterlitz-Thouless type phase transition.

Onset of symmetry breaking by the functional RG method

A numerical algorithm is used to solve the bare and the effective potential for the scalar $ϕ^4$ model in the local potential approximation. An approximate dynamical Maxwell-cut is found which reveals itself in the degeneracy of the action for modes at some scale. This result indicates that the potential develop singular field dependence as far as one can see it by an lgorithm of limited numerical accuracy

Renormalization of QCD_2

The low energy infrared scaling of the multi-color 2-dimensional quantum chromodynamics is determined in the framework of its bosonized model by using the functional renormalization group method with gliding sharp cut-off k in momentum space in the local potential approximation. The model exhibits a single phase with a superuniversal effective potential.

Quantum censorship in two dimensions

It is pointed out that increasingly attractive interactions, represented by partially concave local potential in the Lagrangian, may lead to the degeneracy of the blocked, renormalized action at the gliding cutoff scale by tree-level renormalization. A quantum counterpart of this mechanism is presented in the two-dimensional sine-Gordon model. The presence of Quantum Censorship is conjectured which makes the loop contributions pile up during the renormalization and thereby realize an approximate semiclassical effect.

Functional renormalization group for quantized anharmonic oscillator

Functional renormalization group methods formulated in the real-time formalism are applied to the $O(N)$ symmetric quantum anharmonic oscillator, considered as a $0+1$ dimensional quantum field-theoric model, in the next-to-leading order of the gradient expansion of the one- and two-particle irreducible effective action. The infrared scaling laws and the sensitivity-matrix analysis show the existence of only a single, symmetric phase. The field-independent term of the wavefunction renormalization turned out to be negligible, but its field-dependent piece is noticeable. It is shown that the infrared limits of the running couplings depend on the renormalization group scheme used, when the perturbation expansion in the bare quartic coupling is truncated keeping the terms up to the second order.

Phase Structure and Compactness

In order to study the influence of compactness on low-energy properties, we compare the phase structures of the compact and non-compact two-dimensional multi-frequency sine-Gordon models. It is shown that the high-energy scaling of the compact and non-compact models coincides, but their low-energy behaviors differ. The critical frequency $β^2 = 8π$ at which the sine-Gordon model undergoes a topological phase transition is found to be unaffected by the compactness of the field since it is determined by high-energy scaling laws. However, the compact two-frequency sine-Gordon model has first and second order phase transitions determined by the low-energy scaling: we show that these are absent in the non-compact model.

Nonlinear dielectric effect of dipolar fluids

The nonlinear dielectric effect for dipolar fluids is studied within the framework of the mean spherical approximation (MSA) of hard core dipolar Yukawa fluids. Based on earlier results for the electric field dependence of the polarization our analytical results show so-called normal saturation effects which are in good agreement with corresponding NVT ensemble Monte Carlo simulation data. The linear and the nonlinear dielectric permittivities obtained from MC simulations are determined from the fluctuations of the total dipole moment of the system in the absence of an applied electric field. We compare the MSA based theoretical results with the corresponding Langevin and Debye-Weiss behaviors.

Comparison of renormalization group schemes for sine-Gordon type models

The scheme-dependence of the renormalization group (RG) flow has been investigated in the local potential approximation for two-dimensional periodic, sine-Gordon type field-theoric models discussing the applicability of various functional RG methods in detail. It was shown that scheme-independent determination of such physical parameters is possible as the critical frequency (temperature) at which Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinskii type phase transition takes place in the sine-Gordon and the layered sine-Gordon models, and the critical ratio characterizing the Ising type phase transition of the massive sine-Gordon model. For the latter case the Maxwell construction represents a strong constraint on the RG flow which results in a scheme-independent infrared value for the critical ratio. For the massive sine-Gordon model also the shrinking of the domain of the phase with spontaneously broken periodicity is shown to take place due to the quantum fluctuations.

Functional renormalization group approach to the sine-Gordon model

The renormalization group flow is presented for the two-dimensional sine-Gordon model within the framework of the functional renormalization group method by including the wave-function renormalization constant. The Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinski type phase structure is recovered as the interpolating scaling law between two competing IR attractive area of the global renormalization group flow.

Massless fermions in multi-flavor QED_2

The ground state of the multi-flavor 2-dimensional quantum electrodynamics (QED_2) is determined in the presence of finite baryon density, and it is shown that the model possesses two phases, the low density phase where the external baryon density is totally screened, and the high density phase, where the screening is only partial. The renormalization of the bosonized version of the model is also performed for both the zero and the finite density model giving massless multi-flavor QED_2 in both cases.

Applicability of layered sine-Gordon models to layered superconductors: II. The case of magnetic coupling

In this paper, we propose a quantum field theoretical renormalization group approach to the vortex dynamics of magnetically coupled layered superconductors, to supplement our earlier investigations on the Josephson-coupled case. We construct a two-dimensional multi-layer sine-Gordon type model which we map onto a gas of topological excitations. With a special choice of the mass matrix for our field theoretical model, vortex dominated properties of magnetically coupled layered superconductors can be described. The well known interaction potentials of fractional flux vortices are consistently obtained from our field-theoretical analysis, and the physical parameters (vortex fugacity and temperature parameter) are also identified. We analyse the phase structure of the multi-layer sine--Gordon model by a differential renormalization group method for the magnetically coupled case from first principles. The dependence of the transition temperature on the number of layers is found to be in agreement with known results based on other methods.

Generalized universality in the massive sine-Gordon model

A non-trivial interplay of the UV and IR scaling laws, a generalization of the universality is demonstrated in the framework of the massive sine-Gordon model, as a result of a detailed study of the global behaviour of the renormalization group flow and the phase structure.

On the applicability of the layered sine-Gordon model for Josephson-coupled high-T_c layered superconductors

We find a mapping of the layered sine-Gordon model to an equivalent gas of topological excitations and determine the long-range interaction potentials of the topological defects. This enables us to make a detailed comparison to the so-called layered vortex gas, which can be obtained from the layered Ginzburg-Landau model. The layered sine-Gordon model has been proposed in the literature as a candidate field-theoretical model for Josephson-coupled high-T_c superconductors, and the implications of our analysis for the applicability of the layered sine-Gordon model to high-T_c superconductors are discussed. We are led to the conjecture that the layered sine--Gordon and the layered vortex gas models belong to different universality classes. The determination of the critical temperature of the layered sine-Gordon model is based on a renormalization-group analysis.

Renormalizable parameters of the sine-Gordon model

The well-known phase structure of the two-dimensional sine-Gordon model is reconstructed by means of its renormalization group flow, the study of the sensitivity of the dynamics on microscopic parameters. Such an analysis resolves the apparent contradiction between the phase structure and the triviality of the effective potential in either phases, provides a case where usual classification of operators based on the linearization of the scaling relation around a fixed point is not available and shows that the Maxwell-cut generates an unusually strong universality at long distances. Possible analogies with four-dimensional Yang-Mills theories are mentioned, too.
