Dynamics and interaction of solitons in the BPS limit and their internal modes

The main objective of this thesis has been to analyse soliton dynamics in detail, with special attention paid to the role of the internal modes associated with these configurations. Specifically, the thesis has focused on the study of one- and two-dimensional models, with the aim of developing a solid basis that can then be extended to the study in three-dimensional theories. This thesis concentrates on the study of kinks, oscillons, vortices, and sphalerons. Nevertheless, field theories constitute systems with an infinite number of degrees of freedom, which poses challenges both for obtaining analytical results and for predictive modeling. To address these challenges, this thesis employs the construction of effective models that retain the essential degrees of freedom required to capture the phenomenology observed in numerical simulations of the full theory, using the well-known collective coordinate method. In addition, other complementary mathematical tools, such as perturbative techniques, have also been employed. Among the main achievements of this doctoral thesis, it is worth highlighting the introduction, for the first time, of genuine radiation modes within the collective coordinate framework. Furthermore, a generalisation of Samols' moduli space metric for local vortices in the Abelian-Higgs model has been developed through the incorporation of vibrational degrees of freedom. Additionally, a new class of sphalerons that we have coined semi-BPS sphalerons has been identified and analysed. Finally, the role of oscillatory internal modes in the decay process of sphalerons has been studied in detail, leading to the proposal of a dynamic stabilisation mechanism. This mechanism has been further explained and extended to more general models, demonstrating the robustness and potential applicability of this phenomenon to physically relevant theories.

Moduli space metric of the excited vortex

We show that the moduli space metric of a single vortex gets corrections because of the excitation of the radially symmetric shape mode. It leads to a non-zero amount of the shape mode carried by the vortex when moving with a constant velocity. However, due to the radial symmetry, this effect does not reproduce the Lorentz contraction of the moving vortex. We apply the Derrick mode approximation in order to recover the Lorentz contraction on the level of the collective model.

Sphaleron decay on circles

We discuss various sphaleron-like solutions on $\mathbb{S}^1$. These solutions are static, but unstable. We explore possible stabilization mechanisms based on the excitation of internal modes. Additionally, we observe that, on time scales comparable to the size of the circle, the collapse of large sphalerons mimics the kink-antikink scattering on the real line.

Impact of the internal modes on the sphaleron decay

We study the sphaleron solutions in two deformations of the $ϕ^6$ model and analyze the oscillons originated from them. We find that the presence of internal modes plays a crucial role in the sphaleron collapse. The positive internal modes triggered by a squeezing of the sphaleron are able to change the direction of collapse. We provide an analytical understanding behind this phenomenon.

Excited Abelian-Higgs vortices: decay rate and radiation emission

The evolution of 1-vortices when their massive bound mode is excited is investigated in detail (both analytically and numerically) in the Abelian-Higgs model for different ranges of the self-coupling constant. The dependence of the spectrum of the 1-vortex fluctuation operator on the model parameter is discussed initially. A perturbative approach is employed to study the radiation emission in both the scalar and the vector channels. Our findings reveal that the oscillating initial configuration of the 1-vortex radiates at a frequency twice that of the internal mode. Through energy conservation considerations, we derive the decay law of the massive mode. Finally, these analytical results are compared with numerical simulations in field theory.

Semi-BPS sphaleron and its dynamics

We construct a simple field theory in which a sphaleron, i.e., a saddle-point particle-like solution, forms a semi-BPS state with a background defect that is an impurity. This means that there is no static force between the sphaleron and the impurity. Therefore such a sphaleron-impurity system is very much like usual BPS multi-solitons, however, still possessing an unstable direction allowing for its decay. We study dynamics of the sphaleron in such a system.

Inclusion of radiation in the CCM approach of the $ϕ^4$ model

We present an effective Lagrangian for the $ϕ^4$ model that includes radiation modes as collective coordinates. The coupling between these modes to the discrete part of the spectrum, i.e., the zero mode and the shape mode, gives rise to different phenomena which can be understood in a simple way in our approach. In particular, the energy transfer between radiation, translation and shape modes is carefully investigated in the single-kink sector. Finally, we also discuss the inclusion of radiation modes in the study of oscillons. This leads to relevant phenomena such as the oscillon decay and the kink-antikink creation.
