Near infrared flares of Sagittarius A*: Importance of near infrared polarimetry

We report on the results of new simulations of near-infrared (NIR) observations of the Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) counterpart associated with the super-massive black hole at the Galactic Center. The observations have been carried out using the NACO adaptive optics (AO) instrument at the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope and CIAO NIR camera on the Subaru telescope (13 June 2004, 30 July 2005, 1 June 2006, 15 May 2007, 17 May 2007 and 28 May 2008). We used a model of synchrotron emission from relativistic electrons in the inner parts of an accretion disk. The relativistic simulations have been carried out using the Karas-Yaqoob (KY) ray-tracing code. We probe the existence of a correlation between the modulations of the observed flux density light curves and changes in polarimetric data. Furthermore, we confirm that the same correlation is also predicted by the hot spot model. Correlations between intensity and polarimetric parameters of the observed light curves as well as a comparison of predicted and observed light curve features through a pattern recognition algorithm result in the detection of a signature of orbiting matter under the influence of strong gravity. This pattern is detected statistically significant against randomly polarized red noise. Expected results from future observations of VLT interferometry like GRAVITY experiment are also discussed.

Observational Appearance of Relativistic, Spherically Symmetric Massive Winds

The photon mean free path in a relativistically moving medium becomes long in the down-stream direction while short in the up-stream direction. As a result, the observed optical depth $τ$ becomes small in the downstream direction while large in the upstream direction. Hence, if a relativistic spherical wind blows off, the optical depth depends strongly on its speed and the angle between the velocity and the line-of-sight. Abramowicz et al. (1991) examined such a relativistic wind, and found that the shape of the photosphere at $τ=1$ appears convex in the non-relativistic case, but concave for relativistic velocities. We further calculated the temperature distribution and luminosity of the photosphere both in the comoving and inertial frames. We found that the limb-darkening effect would strongly modified in the relativistic regime. We also found that luminosities of the photosphere becomes large as the wind speed increases due to the relativistic effects. In addition, the luminosity in the inertial frame is higher than that in the comoving frame. These results suggest that the observed temperature and brightness in luminous objects may be overestimated when there are strong relativistic winds.

A Catalog of X-ray Point Sources from Two Megaseconds of Chandra Observations of the Galactic Center

We present a catalog of 9017 X-ray sources identified in Chandra observations of a 2 by 0.8 degree field around the Galactic center. We increase the number of known X-ray sources in the region by a factor of 2.5. The catalog incorporates all of the ACIS-I observations as of 2007 August, which total 2.25 Msec of exposure. At the distance to the Galactic center (8 kpc), we are sensitive to sources with luminosities >4e32 erg/s (0.5-8.0 keV; 90% confidence) over an area of one square degree, and up to an order of magnitude more sensitive in the deepest exposure (1.0 Msec) around Sgr A*. The positions of 60% of our sources are accurate to <1" (95% confidence), and 20% have positions accurate to <0.5". We search for variable sources, and find that 3% exhibit flux variations within an observation, 10% exhibit variations from observation-to-observation. We also find one source, CXOUGC J174622.7-285218, with a periodic 1745 s signal (1.4% chance probability), which is probably a magnetically-accreting cataclysmic variable. We compare the spatial distribution of X-ray sources to a model for the stellar distribution, and find 2.8 sigma evidence for excesses in the numbers of X-ray sources in the region of recent star formation encompassed by the Arches, Quintuplet, and Galactic center star clusters. These excess sources are also seen in the luminosity distribution of the X-ray sources, which is flatter near the Arches and Quintuplet than elsewhere in the field. These excess point sources, along with a similar longitudinal asymmetry in the distribution of diffuse iron emission that has been reported by other authors, probably have their origin in the young stars that are prominent at l~0.1 degree.

Observation Campaign of SS 433 in April 2006

A radio-IR-optical-X-ray observation campaign of SS 433 has been performed in April 2006, when the jet axis is almost perpendicular to the line of sight. Five flares have been detected during the campaign by radio monitoring observation with RATAN-600. The X-ray astronomical satellite Suzaku observed the source in and out of eclipse. In the X-ray data out of eclipse, the flux shows a significant variation with a time scale of hours. The source seems to be in the active state during the campaign. The observation logs and preliminary results are presented.

On the Eigenvalue Problem of the su(1,1)-Algebra and the Coupling Scheme of Two su(1,1)-Spins

After recapitulating the eigenvalue problem of the su(1,1)-algebra in the conventional form, the same problem is treated in an unconventional form, in which the eigenvalue is pure imaginary. Further, the coupling scheme of two su(1,1)-spins is discussed in the framework of two possibilities, in which certain new aspects appear. Finally, the coupling scheme developed in this paper is applied to a concrete example, which will serve boson realization of the so(4)- and the so(3,1)-algebra presented in the next paper.

A Note on the Eigenvalue Problem in the su(1,1)-Algebra

Normalization constant in the eigenstate appearing in the eigenvalue problem of the su(1,1)-algebra is discussed. This normalization constant is expressed in terms of the Gauss' hypergeometric series which is not absolutely convergent. It is proved that this series is obtained as a certain limit of an absolutely convergent series, which was conjectured in the previous paper.

A Possible Boson Realization of the so(4)- and the so(3,1)-Algebra

As natural extensions of the boson realizations of the su(2)- and the su(1,1)-algebra, the so(4)- and the so(3,1)-algebras are presented in the form of boson realizations with four kinds of boson operators. For each algebra, two forms are discussed. One is constructed in terms of two sets of the boson operators which play a role of spherical tensor with rank 1/2. The other is based on the ranks 1 and 0. As a possible application, the Runge-Lenz-Pauli vector, which is famous in the hydrogen atom, is derived with some aspects.

Amplification of Quantum Meson Modes in the Late Time of Chiral Phase Transition

It is shown that there exists a possibility of amplification of amplitudes of quantum pion modes with low momenta in the late time of chiral phase transition by using the Gaussian wave functional approximation in the O(4) linear sigma model. It is also shown that the amplification occurs in the mechanism of the resonance by forced oscillation as well as the parametric resonance induced by the small oscillation of the chiral condensate. These mechanisms are investigated in both the case of spatially homogeneous system and the spatially expanded system described by the Bjorken coordinate.

Fermionic Squeezed State for Simple Algebraic Models in Many-Fermion Systems

It is shown that a variational approach with fermionic squeezed states to many-fermion systems such as pairing model is one of useful methods beyond the usual Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation. A pairing-type quasi-spin squeezed state is constructed and adopted as a trial state in the variational method. By using this state, quantum fluctuations are taken into account. In pairing model, dynamical and static approaches are discussed in the context of comparing with the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation about ground state energy. As a possible extension to the O(4) model, prospective squeezed states are investigated and the usefulness is discussed.
