Transverse order and longitudinal fluctuations in a near-Ising spin supersolid

We investigate the polarization of the ordered moments and low-energy spin fluctuations in the spin supersolid state of the S = 1/2 triangular-lattice easy-axis antiferromagnet K2Co(SeO3)2 using neutron scattering. The supersolid order develops through successive BKT transitions: the longitudinal order appears at higher temperature, while the transverse component associated with the Bose-Einstein condensate emerges only below a lower-temperature transition accompanied by a change in the interlayer correlations. At the lowest measured temperature, the transverse ordered moment reaches only 11% of the longitudinal component. Moreover, the low-energy spin fluctuations are found to be predominantly longitudinal in character. These results provide direct evidence that the supersolid ground state survives even in the near-Ising regime and exhibits longitudinal low-energy dynamics, imposing stringent constraints on microscopic theories of triangular-lattice XXZ antiferromagnets.

Coupled dimerized alternating-bond quantum spin chains in the distorted honeycomb-lattice magnet Cu$_5$SbO$_6$

We analyze powder-averaged inelastic neutron scattering and magnetization data for the distorted honeycomb compound Cu$_5$SbO$_6$ using a first-order dimer expansion calculation and quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We show that, in contrast to the previously proposed honeycomb lattice model, Cu$_5$SbO$_6$ accommodates interacting dimerized spin chains with alternating ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic couplings along the chain. Moreover, unlike the typical couplings observed in other Cu$^{2+}$-based distorted honeycomb magnets, the spin chains in Cu$_5$SbO$_6$ primarily couple through an antiferromagnetic coupling that arises between the honeycomb layers, rather than the expected interchain coupling in the layers. This finding reveals a different magnetic coupling scheme for Cu$_5$SbO$_6$. In addition, utilizing x-ray spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy, we also refine the crystal structure and stacking-fault model of the compound.

Nonperturbative Semiclassical Spin Dynamics for Ordered Quantum Magnets

In ordered quantum magnets where interactions between elementary excitations dominate over their kinetic energy, perturbative approaches often fail, making non-perturbative methods essential to capture spectral features such as bound states and the redistribution of weight within excitation continua. Although an increasing number of experiments report anomalous spin excitation continua in such systems, their microscopic interpretation remains an open challenge. Here, we investigate the spin dynamics of the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet in its 1/3-plateau phase using two complementary non-perturbative approaches: exact diagonalization in a truncated Hilbert space for a gas of elementary excitations (THED) and matrix product state (MPS) simulations. Alongside cross-validation between these methods, we benchmark our results against inelastic neutron scattering (INS) data. The THED analysis confirms the presence of two-magnon bound states and identifies the anomalous scattering continuum observed in both MPS and INS as a two-magnon resonance, arising from hybridization between the bound state and the two-magnon continuum. Furthermore, THED reveals bound states overlapping with the continuum, enriching the interpretation of continuum anomalies. More broadly, THED provides a robust framework for investigating anomalous spin excitation continua and bound-state effects in other materials with gapped spectra. Its combination of accuracy and computational efficiency makes it a powerful tool for extracting reliable microscopic models in semiclassical regimes.

Wannier states and spin supersolid physics in the triangular antiferromagnet K$_2$Co(SeO$_3$)$_2$

We combine ultra-high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering and quantum Monte Carlo simulations to study thermodynamics and spin excitations in the spin-supersolid phase of the triangular lattice XXZ antiferromagnet K$_2$Co(SeO$_3$)$_2$ under zero and non-zero magnetic field. BKT transitions signaling the onset of Ising and supersolid order are clearly identified, and the Wannier entropy is experimentally recovered just above the supersolid phase. At low temperatures, with an experimental resolution of about 23 $μ$eV, no discrete coherent magnon modes are resolved within a broad scattering continuum. Alongside gapless excitations, a pseudo-Goldstone mode with a 0.06 meV gap is observed. A second, higher-energy continuum replaces single-spin-flip excitations of the Ising model. Under applied fields, the continuum evolves into coherent spin waves, with Goldstone and pseudo-Goldstone sectors responding differently. The experiments and simulations show excellent quantitative agreement.

Continuum excitations in a spin-supersolid on a triangular lattice

Magnetic, thermodynamic, neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering are used to study spin correlations in the easy-axis XXZ triangular lattice magnet K2Co(SeO3)2. Despite the presence of quasi-2D "supersolid" magnetic order, the low-energy excitation spectrum contains no sharp modes and is instead a broad and structured multi-particle continuum. Applying a weak magnetic field drives the system into an m = 1/3 fractional magnetization plateau phase and restores sharp spin wave modes. To some extent, the behavior at zero field can be understood in terms of spin wave decay. However, the presence of clear excitation minima at the M-points of the Brillouin zone suggest that the spinon language may provide a more adequate description, and signals a possible proximity to a Dirac spin liquid state.

Excitation Spectrum and Spin Hamiltonian of the Frustrated Quantum Ising Magnet Pr$_3$BWO$_9$

We present a thorough experimental investigation on single crystals of the rare-earth based frustrated quantum antiferromagnet Pr$_3$BWO$_9$, a purported spin-liquid candidate on the breathing kagome lattice. This material possesses a disordered ground state with an unusual excitation spectrum involving a coexistence of sharp spin-waves and broad continuum excitations. Nevertheless, we show through a combination of thermodynamic, magnetometric and spectroscopic probes with detailed theoretical modeling that it should be understood in a completely different framework. The crystal field splits the lowest quasi-doublet states into two singlets moderately coupled through frustrated superexchange, resulting in a simple effective Hamiltonian of an Ising model in a transverse magnetic field. While our neutron spectroscopy data do point to significant correlations within the kagome planes, the dominant interactions are out-of-plane, forming frustrated triangular spin-tubes through two competing ferro-antiferromagnetic bonds. The resulting ground state is a simple quantum paramagnet, but with significant modifications to both thermodynamic and dynamic properties due to small perturbations to the transverse field Ising model in the form of hyperfine enhanced nuclear moments and weak structural disorder.

Breakdown of Linear Spin-wave Theory and Existence of Spinon Bound States in the Frustrated Kagome Lattice Antiferromagnet

Spin dynamics of the spin-1/2 kagome lattice antiferromagnet Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ was studied using high-resolution, time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering. The flat mode, a characteristic of the frustrated kagome antiferromagnet, and the low-energy dispersive mode, which is dominated by magnons, can be well described by the linear spin-wave theory. However, the theory fails to describe three weakly dispersive modes between 9 and 14 meV. These modes could be attributed to two-spinon bound states, which decay into free spinons away from the zone center and at a high temperature, giving rise to continuum scattering.

Glasslike phonon excitation caused by ferroelectric structural instability

Quest for new states of matter near an ordered phase is a promising route for making modern physics forward. By probing thermal properties of a ferroelectric (FE) crystal Ba1-xSrxAl2O4, we have clarified that low-energy excitation of acoustic phonons is remarkably enhanced with critical behavior at the border of the FE phase. The phonon spectrum is significantly damped toward the FE phase boundary and transforms into glasslike phonon excitation which is reminiscent of a boson peak. This system thus links long-standing issues of amorphous solids and structural instability in crystals to pave the way to controlling lattice fluctuation as a new tuning parameter.

$\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ long-range magnetic order in centennialite CaCu$_3$(OD)$_6$Cl$_2$$\cdot$0.6D$_2$O: A spin-1/2 perfect kagome antiferromagnet with $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_d$

Crystal and magnetic structures of the mineral centennialite CaCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2\cdot0.6$H$_2$O are investigated by means of synchrotron x-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction measurements complemented by density functional theory (DFT) and pseudofermion functional renormalization group (PFFRG) calculations. CaCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2\cdot0.6$H$_2$O crystallizes in the $P\bar{3}m1$ space group and Cu$^{2+}$ ions form a geometrically perfect kagome network with antiferromagnetic $J_1$. No intersite disorder between Cu$^{2+}$ and Ca$^{2+}$ ions is detected. CaCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2\cdot0.6$H$_2$O enters a magnetic long-range ordered state below $T_\text{N}=7.2$~K, and the $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ magnetic structure with negative vector spin chirality is obtained. The ordered moment at 0.3~K is suppressed to $0.58(2)μ_\text{B}$. Our DFT calculations indicate the presence of antiferromagnetic $J_2$ and ferromagnetic $J_d$ superexchange couplings of a strength which places the system at the crossroads of three magnetic orders (at the classical level) and a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ PFFRG analysis shows a dominance of $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ type magnetic correlations, consistent with and indicating proximity to the observed $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ spin structure. The results suggest that this material is located close to a quantum critical point and is a good realization of a $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_d$ kagome antiferromagnet.

Multiple Magnetic Bilayers and Unconventional Criticality without Frustration in BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$

The dimerized quantum magnet BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ was proposed as an example of "dimensional reduction" arising near the magnetic-field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) due to perfect geometrical frustration of its inter-bilayer interactions. We demonstrate by high-resolution neutron spectroscopy experiments that the effective intra-bilayer interactions are ferromagnetic, thereby excluding frustration. We explain the apparent dimensional reduction by establishing the presence of three magnetically inequivalent bilayers, with ratios 3:2:1, whose differing interaction parameters create an extra field-temperature scaling regime near the QCP with a non-trivial but non-universal exponent. We demonstrate by detailed quantum Monte Carlo simulations that the magnetic interaction parameters we deduce can account for all the measured properties of BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$, opening the way to a quantitative understanding of non-universal scaling in any modulated layered system.

Spin gap and L modulated intensity at the low-energy incommensurate magnetic fluctuations in the superconducting state of Sr2RuO4

Low-energy incommensurate (IC) magnetic fluctuations in the multiband superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is investigated by high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering measurements and random phase approximation (RPA) calculations. Below $T_\text{c}$, the substantial spin gap is observed at $\mathbf{Q}_\text{IC}=(0.3, 0.3, L)$ where the quasi-one-dimensional $α$ and $β$ sheets consisting of the Fermi surfaces are in good nesting conditions. $L$ modulated intensity of the low-energy IC magnetic fluctuations and our RPA calculations indicate that the superconducting gaps regarding the $α$ and $β$ sheets have the horizontal line nodes.

Quantum paramagnet near spin-state transition

Spin-state transition, also known as spin crossover, plays a key role in diverse systems, including minerals and biological materials. In theory, the boundary range between the low- and high-spin states is expected to enrich the transition and give rise to unusual physical states. However, no compound that realizes a nearly degenerate critical range as the ground state without requiring special external conditions has yet been experimentally identified. This study reports that, by comprehensive measurements of macroscopic physical properties, X-ray diffractometry, and neutron spectroscopy, the Sc substitution in LaCoO$_3$ destabilizes its nonmagnetic low-spin state and generates an anomalous paramagnetic state accompanied by the enhancement of transport gap and magneto-lattice-expansion as well as the contraction of Co--O distance with the increase of electron site-transfer. These phenomena are not well described by the mixture of conventional low- and high-spin states, but by their quantum superposition occurring on the verge of a spin-state transition. The present study enables us to significantly accelerate the design of new advanced materials without requiring special equipment based on the concept of quantum spin-state criticality.

Coexistence of ferromagnetic and stripe-type antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in YFe$_2$Ge$_2$

We report neutron scattering measurements of single-crystalline YFe$_2$Ge$_2$ in the normal state, which has the same crystal structure to the 122 family of iron pnictide superconductors. YFe$_2$Ge$_2$ does not exhibit long range magnetic order, but exhibits strong spin fluctuations. Like the iron pnictides, YFe$_2$Ge$_2$ displays anisotropic stripe-type antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations at ($π$, $0$, $π$). More interesting, however, is the observation of strong spin fluctuations at the in-plane ferromagnetic wavevector ($0$, $0$, $π$). These ferromagnetic spin fluctuations are isotropic in the ($H$, $K$) plane, whose intensity exceeds that of stripe spin fluctuations. Both the ferromagnetic and stripe spin fluctuations remain gapless down to the lowest measured energies. Our results naturally explain the absence of magnetic order in YFe$_2$Ge$_2$ and also imply that the ferromagnetic correlations may be a key ingredient for iron-based materials.

Emergent units of itinerant spin-state excitations in LaCoO$_3$

Spin crossover is expected to enrich unusual physical states in various types of condensed matter. Through inelastic neutron scattering, we study the spin-state excitations in the canonical and advanced platform, LaCoO$_3$, and reveal that the spatial correlation robustly maintains the seven-Co-site size below 300 K and the internal Co-$d$ electrons are spatially delocalized. By combining theoretical calculations, this dynamical short-range order is identified as a new collective unit for describing spin-state with dual spin-state nature beyond the conventional one-Co-site classification.

Spin Model of O2-based Magnet in a Nanoporous Metal Complex

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments are performed on a nanoporous metal complex Cu-Trans-1,4-Cyclohexanedicarboxylic Acid (Cu-CHD) adsorbing O2 molecules to identify the spin model of the O2-based magnet realized in the host complex. It is found that the magnetic excitations of Cu-CHDs adsorbing low- and high-concentration O2 molecules are explained by different spin models, the former by spin dimers and the latter by spin trimers. By using the obtained parameters and also by assuming that the levels of the higher energy states are reduced because of the non-negligible spin dependence of the molecular potential of oxygen, the magnetization curves are explained in quantitative level.

Development of spin correlations in the geometrically frustrated triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet CuCrO2

Magnetic excitations in the triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet (TLHA) CuCrO2 were studied using single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering. A diffusive quasielastic component that persisted without developing a correlation length over a wide temperature range both below and above the ordering temperature was observed. Furthermore, characteristic momentum dependence was observed that was reproduced using minimum spin clusters. The robust spin clusters contrast with conventional magnetic ordering and may be universal in TLHAs.

Spin-orbit fluctuations in frustrated heavy-fermion metal LiV$_2$O$_4$

Spin fluctuations were studied over a wide momentum ($\hbar Q$) and energy ($E$) space in the frustrated $d$-electron heavy-fermion metal LiV$_2$O$_4$ by time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering. We observed the overall $Q$$-$$E$ evolutions near the characteristic $Q=0.6$ Å$^{-1}$ peak and found another weak broad magnetic peak around 2.4 Å$^{-1}$. The data are described by a simple response function, a highly itinerant magnetic form factor, and antiferromagnetic short-range spatial correlations, indicating that heavy-fermion formation is attributable to spin-orbit fluctuations with orbital hybridization.

Spin nematic interaction in multiferroic compound Ba$_{2}$CoGe$_{2}$O$_{7}$

We demonstrate the existence of the spin nematic interactions in an easy-plane type antiferromagnet Ba$_{2}$CoGe$_{2}$O$_{7}$ by exploring the magnetic anisotropy and spin dynamics. Combination of neutron scattering and magnetic susceptibility measurements reveals that the origin of the in-plane anisotropy is an antiferro-type interaction of the spin nematic operator. The relation between the nematic operator and the electric polarization in the ligand symmetry of this compound is presented. The introduction of the spin nematic interaction is useful to understand the physics of spin and electric dipole in multiferroic compounds.
