Extensions of the well-poised and elliptic well-poised Bailey lemma

We establish a number of extensions of the well-poised Bailey lemma and elliptic well-poised Bailey lemma. As application we prove some new transformation formulae for basic and elliptic hypergeometric series, and embed some recent identities of Andrews, Berkovich and Spiridonov in a well-poised Bailey tree.

Summation formulae for elliptic hypergeometric series

Several new identities for elliptic hypergeometric series are proved. Remarkably, some of these are elliptic analogues of identities for basic hypergeometric series that are balanced but not very-well-poised.

Positivity preserving transformations for q-binomial coefficients

Several new transformations for q-binomial coefficients are found, which have the special feature that the kernel is a polynomial with nonnegative coefficients. By studying the group-like properties of these positivity preserving transformations, as well as their connection with the Bailey lemma, many new summation and transformation formulas for basic hypergeometric series are found. The new q-binomial transformations are also applied to obtain multisum Rogers--Ramanujan identities, to find new representations for the Rogers--Szego polynomials, and to make some progress on Bressoud's generalized Borwein conjecture. For the original Borwein conjecture we formulate a refinement based on a new triple sum representations of the Borwein polynomials.

Partial-sum analogues of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities

A new type of polynomial analogue of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities is proven. Here the product-side of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities is replaced by a partial theta sum and the sum-side by a weighted sum over Schur polynomials.

The Bailey lemma and Kostka polynomials

Using the theory of Kostka polynomials, we prove an A_{n-1} version of Bailey's lemma at integral level. Exploiting a new, conjectural expansion for Kostka numbers, this is then generalized to fractional levels, leading to a new expression for admissible characters of A_{n-1}^{(1)} and to identities for A-type branching functions.

The generalized Borwein conjecture. II. Refined q-trinomial coefficients

Transformation formulas for four-parameter refinements of the q-trinomial coefficients are proven. The iterative nature of these transformations allows for the easy derivation of several infinite series of q-trinomial identities, and can be applied to prove many instances of Bressoud's generalized Borwein conjecture.

Partial theta functions. I. Beyond the lost notebook

It is shown how many of the partial theta function identities in Ramanujan's lost notebook can be generalized to infinite families of such identities. Key in our construction is the Bailey lemma and a new generalization of the Jacobi triple product identity. By computing residues around the poles of our identities we find a surprising connection between partial theta functions identities and Garret-Ismail-Stanton-type extensions of multisum Rogers-Ramanujan identities.

The generalized Borwein conjecture. I. The Burge transform

Given an arbitrary ordered pair of coprime integers (a,b) we obtain a pair of identities of the Rogers--Ramanujan type. These identities have the same product side as the (first) Andrews--Gordon identity for modulus 2ab\pm 1, but an altogether different sum side, based on the representation of (a/b-1)^{\pm 1} as a continued fraction. Our proof, which relies on the Burge transform, first establishes a binary tree of polynomial identities. Each identity in this Burge tree settles a special case of Bressoud's generalized Borwein conjecture.

Refined q-trinomial coefficients and character identities

A refinement of the q-trinomial coefficients is introduced, which has a very powerful iterative property. This ``T-invariance'' is applied to derive new Virasoro character identities related to the exceptional simply-laced Lie algebras E_6,E_7 and E_8.

Conjugate Bailey pairs

In this paper it is shown that the one-dimensional configuration sums of the solvable lattice models of Andrews, Baxter and Forrester and the string functions associated with admissible representations of the affine Lie algebra A$_1^{(1)}$ as introduced by Kac and Wakimoto can be exploited to yield a very general class of conjugate Bailey pairs. Using the recently established fermionic or constant-sign expressions for the one-dimensional configuration sums, our result is employed to derive fermionic expressions for fractional-level string functions, parafermion characters and A$_1^{(1)}$ branching functions. In addition, $q$-series identities are obtained whose Lie algebraic and/or combinatorial interpretation is still lacking.

Inhomogeneous lattice paths, generalized Kostka polynomials and A$_{n-1}$ supernomials

Inhomogeneous lattice paths are introduced as ordered sequences of rectangular Young tableaux thereby generalizing recent work on the Kostka polynomials by Nakayashiki and Yamada and by Lascoux, Leclerc and Thibon. Motivated by these works and by Kashiwara's theory of crystal bases we define a statistic on paths yielding two novel classes of polynomials. One of these provides a generalization of the Kostka polynomials while the other, which we name the A$_{n-1}$ supernomial, is a $q$-deformation of the expansion coefficients of products of Schur polynomials. Many well-known results for Kostka polynomials are extended leading to representations of our polynomials in terms of a charge statistic on Littlewood-Richardson tableaux and in terms of fermionic configuration sums. Several identities for the generalized Kostka polynomials and the A$_{n-1}$ supernomials are proven or conjectured. Finally, a connection between the supernomials and Bailey's lemma is made.

$q$-Trinomial identities

We obtain connection coefficients between $q$-binomial and $q$-trinomial coefficients. Using these, one can transform $q$-binomial identities into a $q$-trinomial identities and back again. To demonstrate the usefulness of this procedure we rederive some known trinomial identities related to partition theory and prove many of the conjectures of Berkovich, McCoy and Pearce, which have recently arisen in their study of the $ϕ_{2,1}$ and $ϕ_{1,5}$ perturbations of minimal conformal field theory.

An A$_2$ Bailey lemma and Rogers--Ramanujan-type identities

Using new $q$-functions recently introduced by Hatayama et al. and by (two of) the authors, we obtain an A_2 version of the classical Bailey lemma. We apply our result, which is distinct from the A_2 Bailey lemma of Milne and Lilly, to derive Rogers-Ramanujan-type identities for characters of the W_3 algebra.

Supernomial coefficients, polynomial identities and $q$-series

$q$-Analogues of the coefficients of $x^a$ in the expansion of $\prod_{j=1}^N (1+x+...+x^j)^{L_j}$ are proposed. Useful properties, such as recursion relations, symmetries and limiting theorems of the ``$q$-supernomial coefficients'' are derived, and a combinatorial interpretation using generalized Durfee dissection partitions is given. Polynomial identities of boson-fermion-type, based on the continued fraction expansion of $p/k$ and involving the $q$-supernomial coefficients, are proven. These include polynomial analogues of the Andrews-Gordon identities. Our identities unify and extend many of the known boson-fermion identities for one-dimensional configuration sums of solvable lattice models, by introducing multiple finitization parameters.

A note on the trinomial analogue of Bailey's lemma

Recently, Andrews and Berkovich introduced a trinomial version of Bailey's lemma. In this note we show that each ordinary Bailey pair gives rise to a trinomial Bailey pair. This largely widens the applicability of the trinomial Bailey lemma and proves some of the identities proposed by Andrews and Berkovich.

A Higher-Level Bailey Lemma: Proof and Application

In a recent letter, new representations were proposed for the pair of sequences ($γ,δ$), as defined formally by Bailey in his famous lemma. Here we extend and prove this result, providing pairs ($γ,δ$) labelled by the Lie algebra A$_{N-1}$, two non-negative integers $\ell$ and $k$ and a partition $λ$, whose parts do not exceed $N-1$. Our results give rise to what we call a ``higher-level'' Bailey lemma. As an application it is shown how this lemma can be applied to yield general $q$-series identities, which generalize some well-known results of Andrews and Bressoud.

A Higher-level Bailey Lemma

We propose a generalization of Bailey's lemma, useful for proving $q$-series identities. As an application, generalizations of Euler's identity, the Rogers-Ramanujan identities, and the Andrews-Gordon identities are derived. This generalized Bailey lemma also allows one to derive identities for the branching functions of higher-level $A^{(1)}_1$ cosets.
