Electronic correlation in the quasi-two-dimensional electride Y$_2$C

Magnetic properties of the electride compound Y$_2$C were investigated by muon spin rotation and magnetic susceptibility on two samples with different form (poly- and single-crystalline), to examine the theoretically-predicted Stoner ferromagnetism for the electride bands. There was no evidence of static magnetic order in both samples even at temperatures down to 0.024 K. For the poly-crystalline sample, the presence of a paramagnetic moment at Y sites was inferred from the Curie-Weiss behavior of the muon Knight shift and susceptibility, whereas no such tendency was observed in the single-crystalline sample. These observations suggest that the electronic ground state of Y$_2$C is at the limit between weak-to-strong electronic correlation, where onsite Coulomb repulsion is sensitive to a local modulation of the electronic state or a shift in the Fermi level due to the presence of defects/impurities.

Microscopic properties of vortex state in YB6 probed by muon spin rotation

Local magnetic field distribution B(r) in the mixed state of a boride superconductor, YB6, is studied by muon spin rotation (muSR). A comparative analysis using the modified London model and Ginzburg-Landau (GL) model indicates that the GL model exhibits better agreement with muSR data at higher fields, thereby demonstrating the importance of reproducing the field profile near the vortex cores when the intervortex distance becomes closer to the GL coherence length. The temperature and field dependence of magnetic penetration depth ($λ$) does not show any hint of nonlocal effect nor of low-lying quasiparticle excitation. This suggests that the strong coupling of electrons to the rattling motion of Y ions in the boron cage suggested by bulk measurements gives rise to a conventional superconductivity with isotropic s-wave pairing. Taking account of the present result, a review is provided for probing the anisotropy of superconducting order parameters by the slope of $λ$ against field.

Electronic Structure of B-2$pσ$ and $pπ$ States in MgB$_2$, AlB$_2$ and ZrB$_2$ Single Crystals

The effect of electron correlation (EC) on the electronic structure in MgB$_2$, AlB$_2$ and ZrB$_2$, is studied by examining the partial density of states (PDOS) of B-2$pσ$ and $pπ$ orbitals using the polarization dependence of x-ray emission and absorption spectra. The discrepancies between observed and calculated PDOSs cannot be attributed to EC effects. The present results suggest that the EC effect is less than the experimental error ($\sim$ 0.2 eV), which indirectly supports a scenario that electron-phonon interaction plays an essential role in the occurrence of superconductivity.

Study of the electron-phonon interaction in metal diborides MeB_2 (Me=Zr, Nb, Ta, Mg) by point-contact spectroscopy

We review investigations of the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) in metal diborides MeB_2 (Me=Zr, Nb, Ta, Mg) by point-contact (PC) spectroscopy. For transition metal compounds the PC EPI functions were recovered and EPI parameter $λ\lesssim 0.1$ were estimated. The data are consistent with the measured surface phonon dispersion curves. The low $λ$ value questions some reports about superconductivity in these compounds. Contrary, EPI in superconducting MgB_2 films manifests also in the PC spectra itself by virtue of an elastic EPI contribution to the excess current determined by the energy dependence of the superconducting order parameter. To analyse the phonon features in the PC spectra of MgB$_2$ a two-band model is exploited and the proximity effect in the {\bf k}-space is suggested.

Electron-phonon interaction in transition metal diborides TB_2 (T=Zr, Nb, Ta) studied by point-contact spectroscopy

The electron-phonon interaction (EPI) in transition metal diborides TB_2 (T=Zr, Nb, Ta) is investigated by point-contact (PC) spectroscopy. The PC EPI functions were recovered and the EPI parameters lambda<0.1 were estimated for all three compounds. Common and distinctive features between the EPI functions for those diborides are discussed also in connection with the superconductivity in MgB_2.
