Many-Body Quantum Muon Effects and Quadrupolar Coupling in Solids

Strong quantum zero-point motion (ZPM) of light nuclei and other particles is a crucial aspect of many state-of-the-art quantum materials. However, it has only recently begun to be explored from an $\textit{ab initio}$ perspective, through several competing approximations. Here we develop a unified description of muon and light nucleus ZPM and establish the regimes of anharmonicity and positional quantum entanglement where different approximation schemes apply. Via density functional theory and path-integral molecular dynamics simulations we demonstrate that in solid nitrogen, $α\unicode{x2013}$N$_2$, muon ZPM is both strongly anharmonic and many-body in character, with the muon forming an extended electric-dipole polaron around a central, quantum-entangled [N$_2\unicode{x2013}μ\unicode{x2013}$N$_2$]$^+$ complex. By combining this quantitative description of quantum muon ZPM with precision muon quadrupolar level-crossing resonance experiments, we independently determine the static $^{14}$N nuclear quadrupolar coupling constant of pristine $α\unicode{x2013}$N$_2$ to be $-5.36(2)$ MHz, a significant improvement in accuracy over the previously-accepted value of $-5.39(5)$ MHz, and a validation of our unified description of light-particle ZPM.

Magnetism and Ion Diffusion in Honeycomb Layered Oxide K$_2$Ni$_2$TeO$_6$: First Time Study by Muon Spin Rotation & Neutron Scattering

In the quest of finding novel and efficient batteries, a great interest has raised in K-based honeycomb layer oxide materials both for their fundamental properties and potential applications. A key issue in the realization of efficient batteries based on such compounds, is to understand the K-ion diffusion mechanism. However, investigation of potassium-ion (K$^+$) dynamics in materials using magneto-spin properties has so far been challenging, due to its inherently weak nuclear magnetic moment, in contrast to other alkali ions such as lithium and sodium. Spin-polarised muons, having a high gyromagnetic ratio, make the muon spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$+SR) technique ideal for probing ions dynamics in weak magneto-spin moment materials. Here we report the magnetic properties and K+ dynamics in honeycomb layered oxide material of the K$_2$Ni$_2$TeO$_6$ using $μ$+SR measurements. Our low-temperature $μ$+SR results together with, with complementary magnetic susceptibility, find an antiferromagnetic transition at 26 K. Further $μ$+SR studies performed at higher temperatures reveal that potassium ions (K$^+$) become mobile above 250 K and the activation energy for the diffusion process is Ea = 121(13) meV. This is the first time that K+ dynamics in potassium-based battery materials has been measured using $μ$+SR. Finally our results also indicate an interesting possibility that K-ion self diffusion occurs predominantly at the surface of the powder particles. This opens future possibilities for improving ion diffusion and device performance using nano-structuring.

Discovery of slow magnetic fluctuations and critical slowing down in the pseudogap phase of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$

Evidence for intra-unit-cell (IUC) magnetic order in the pseudogap region of high-$T_c$ cuprates below a temperature $T^\ast$ is found in several studies, but NMR and $μ$SR experiments do not observe the expected static local magnetic fields. It has been noted, however, that such fields could be averaged by fluctuations. Our measurements of muon spin relaxation rates in single crystals of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ reveal magnetic fluctuations of the expected order of magnitude that exhibit critical slowing down at $T^\ast$. These results are strong evidence for fluctuating IUC magnetic order in the pseudogap phase.

Optimising a Muon Spectrometer for Measurements at the ISIS Pulsed Muon Source

This work describes the development of a state-of-the-art muon spectrometer for the ISIS pulsed muon source. Conceived as a major upgrade of the highly successful EMU instrument, emphasis has been placed on making effective use of the enhanced flux now available at the ISIS source. This has been achieved both through the development of a highly segmented detector array and enhanced data acquisition electronics. The pulsed nature of the ISIS beam is particularly suited to the development of novel experiments involving external stimuli, and therefore the ability to sequence external equipment has been added to the acquisition system. Finally, the opportunity has also been taken to improve both the magnetic field and temperature range provided by the spectrometer, to better equip the instrument for running the future ISIS user programme.

Dynamic correlated Cu(2) magnetic moments in superconducting YBa_2(Cu_0.96Ni_0.04)_3O_y (y ~ 7)

We have examined the magnetic properties of polycrystalline, superconducting YBa_2(Cu_0.96Ni_0.04)_3O_y (y ~ 7, T_sc ~ 75 K) using two local probe techniques: 170Yb Moessbauer down to 0.1 K and muon spin relaxation (muSR) down to 1.5 K. At 0.1 K, the 170Yb measurements show the Cu(2) over essentially all the sample volume carry magnetically correlated moments which are static on the time-scale of 10^{-9} s. The moments show a distribution in size. The correlations are probably short range. As the temperature increases, the correlated moments are observed to fluctuate with measurable rates (in the GHz range) which increase as the temperature increases and which show a wide distribution. The muSR measurements also evidence that the fluctuation rates increase with increasing temperature and there is a distribution. The evidenced fluctuating, correlated Cu(2) moments coexist at an atomic level with superconductivity.

Dynamic correlated Cu(2) magnetic moments in superconducting YBa_2(Cu_0.96Co_0.04)_3O_y (y ~ 7)

We have examined the magnetic properties of superconducting YBa_2(Cu_0.96Co_0.04)_3O_y (y ~ 7, T_sc = 65 K) using elastic neutron scattering and muon spin relaxation (muSR) on single crystal samples. The elastic neutron scattering measurements evidence magnetic reflections which correspond to a commensurate antiferromagnetic Cu(2) magnetic structure with an associated Neel temperature T_N ~ 400 K. This magnetically correlated state is not evidenced by the muSR measurements. We suggest this apparent anomaly arises because the magnetically correlated state is dynamic in nature. It fluctuates with rates that are low enough for it to appear static on the time scale of the elastic neutron scattering measurements, whereas on the time scale of the muSR measurements, at least down to ~ 50 K, it fluctuates too fast to be detected. The different results confirm the conclusions reached from work on equivalent polycrystalline compounds: the evidenced fluctuating, correlated Cu(2) moments coexist at an atomic level with superconductivity.

The microscopic study of a single hydrogen-like impurity in semi-insulating GaAs

The charge dynamics of hydrogen-like centers formed by the implantation of energetic (4 MeV) muons in semi-insulating GaAs have been studied by muon spin resonance in electric fields. The results point to the significant role of deep hole traps in the compensation mechanism of GaAs. Electric-field-enhanced neutralization of deep electron and hole traps by muon-track-induced hot carriers results to an increase of the non-equilibrium carrier life-times. As a consequence, the muonium ($μ^+ + e^-$) center at the tetrahedral As site can capture the track's holes and therefore behaves like a donor.

The application of the NeXus data format to ISIS muon data

Although originally designed by and for the use of the Neutron and X-ray communities, the flexibility of the NeXus data format makes it equally suitable for storing data gathered from MuSR experiments. Furthermore, its use should open up the possibility of sharing software beyond the immediate muon community; giving access to the many tools that are already in existence for manipulating NeXus and HDF based files. This paper explores the development of the NeXus format for storing ISIS muon data and the associated experimental conditions. The design of an Instrument Definition for the ISIS muon instruments is described and the implementation of an application to translate the present ISIS raw data format to the NeXus format presented. The development of a common muon data format is a topic of active discussion within the muon community; with this in mind, the suitability of NeXus and, in particular, the ISIS Instrument Definition for general application is considered. A number of applications that have been developed to exploit the flexibility of the ISIS muon NeXus file format are described and a scheme for enabling web based browsing and analysis of experiment data is introduced.

Evidence for weak itinerant long-range magnetic correlations in UGe2

Positive muon spin relaxation measurements performed on the ferromagnet UGe2 reveal, in addition to the well known localized 5f-electron density responsible for the bulk magnetic properties, the existence of itinerant quasi-static magnetic correlations. Their critical dynamics is well described by the conventional dipolar Heisenberg model. These correlations involve small magnetic moments.
