Faddeev eigenfunctions for two-dimensional Schrodinger operators via the Moutard transformation

We demonstrate how the Moutard transformation of two-dimensional Schrodinger operators acts on the Faddeev eigenfunctions on the zero energy level and present some explicitly computed examples of such eigenfunctions for smooth fast decaying potentials of operators with non-trivial kernel and for deformed potentials which correspond to blowing up solutions of the Novikov-Veselov equation.

The Moutard transformation: an algebraic formalism via pseudodifferential operators and applications

We consider the Moutard transformation which is a two-dimensional version of the well-known Darboux transformation. We give an algebraic interpretation of the Moutard transformation as a conjugation in an appropriate ring and the corresponding version of the algebro-geometric formalism for two-dimensional Schroedinger operators. An application to some problems of the spectral theory of two-dimensional Schroedinger operators and to the $(2+1)$-dimensional Novikov--Veselov equation is sketched.

Second order quasilinear PDEs and conformal structures in projective space

We investigate second order quasilinear equations of the form f_{ij} u_{x_ix_j}=0 where u is a function of n independent variables x_1, ..., x_n, and the coefficients f_{ij} are functions of the first order derivatives p^1=u_{x_1}, >..., p^n=u_{x_n} only. We demonstrate that the natural equivalence group of the problem is isomorphic to SL(n+1, R), which acts by projective transformations on the space P^n with coordinates p^1, ..., p^n. The coefficient matrix f_{ij} defines on P^n a conformal structure f_{ij} dp^idp^j. In this paper we concentrate on the case n=3, although some results hold in any dimension. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the integrability of such equations by the method of hydrodynamic reductions are derived. These conditions constitute a complicated over-determined system of PDEs for the coefficients f_{ij}, which is in involution. We prove that the moduli space of integrable equations is 20-dimensional. Based on these results, we show that any equation satisfying the integrability conditions is necessarily conservative, and possesses a dispersionless Lax pair. Reformulated in differential-geometric terms, the integrability conditions imply that the conformal structure f_{ij} dp^idp^j is conformally flat, and possesses an infinity of 3-conjugate null coordinate systems. Integrable equations provide an abundance of explicit examples of such conformal structures parametrized by elementary functions, elliptic functions and modular forms.

Differential transformations of parabolic second-order operators in the plane

Here, Darboux's classical results about transformations with differential substitutions for hyperbolic equations are extended to the case of parabolic equations of the form $L u = \big(D^2_{x} + a(x,y) D_x + b(x,y) D_y + c(x,y)\big)u=0$. We prove a general Theorem that provides a way to determine transformations for parabolic equations shown above. It turnes out that transforming operators $M$ of some higher order can be always represented as a composition of some first-order operators that consecutively define a series of transformations. Existence of inverse transformations implies some differential constrains on the coefficients of the initial operator. We show that these relations can imply famous integrable equations, in particular, the Boussinesq equation.

Two-dimensional rational solitons and their blow-up via the Moutard transformation

By using the Moutard transformation of two-dimensional Schroedinger operators we derive a procedure for constructing explicit examples of such operators with rational fast decaying potentials and degenerate $L_2$-kernels (this construction was sketched in arXiv:0706.3595) and show that if we take some of these potentials as the Cauchy data for the Novikov-Veselov equation (a two-dimensional version of the Korteweg-de Vries equation), then the corresponding solutions blow up in a finite time

Factorization in categories of systems of linear partial differential equations

We start with elementary algebraic theory of factorization of linear ordinary differential equations developed in the period 1880-1930. After exposing these classical results we sketch more sophisticated algorithmic approaches developed in the last 20 years. The main part of this paper is devoted to modern generalizations of the notion of factorization to the case of systems of linear partial differential equations and their relation with explicit solvability of nonlinear partial differential equations based on some constructions from the theory of abelian categories.

Classification of 3-dimensional integrable scalar discrete equations

We classify all integrable 3-dimensional scalar discrete quasilinear equations Q=0 on an elementary cubic cell of the 3-dimensional lattice. An equation Q=0 is called integrable if it may be consistently imposed on all 3-dimensional elementary faces of the 4-dimensional lattice. Under the natural requirement of invariance of the equation under the action of the complete group of symmetries of the cube we prove that the only nontrivial (non-linearizable) integrable equation from this class is the well-known dBKP-system. (Version 2: A small correction in Table 1 (p.7) for n=2 has been made.) (Version 3: A few small corrections: one more reference added, the main statement stated more explicitly.)

Curvature line parametrization from circle patterns

We study local and global approximations of smooth nets of curvature lines and smooth conjugate nets by respective discrete nets (circular nets and planar quadrilateral nets) with infinitesimal quads. It is shown that choosing the points of discrete nets on the smooth surface one can obtain second-order approximation globally. Also a simple geometric construction for approximate determination of principal directions of smooth surfaces is given.

Exact solutions of hyperbolic systems of kinetic equations. Application to Verhulst model with random perturbation

For hyperbolic first-order systems of linear partial differential equations (master equations), appearing in description of kinetic processes in physics, biology and chemistry we propose a new procedure to obtain their complete closed-form non-stationary solutions. The methods used include the classical Laplace cascade method as well as its recent generalizations for systems with more than 2 equations and more than 2 independent variables. As an example we present the complete non-stationary solution (probability distribution) for Verhulst model driven by Markovian coloured dichotomous noise.

On a class of three-dimensional integrable Lagrangians

We characterize non-degenerate Lagrangians of the form $ \int f(u_x, u_y, u_t) dx dy dt $ such that the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations $ (f_{u_x})_x+ (f_{u_y})_y+ (f_{u_t})_t=0 $ are integrable by the method of hydrodynamic reductions. The integrability conditions constitute an over-determined system of fourth order PDEs for the Lagrangian density $f$, which is in involution and possess interesting differential-geometric properties. The moduli space of integrable Lagrangians, factorized by the action of a natural equivalence group, is three-dimensional. Familiar examples include the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (dKP) and the Boyer-Finley Lagrangians, $f=u_x^3/3+u_y^2-u_xu_t$ and $f=u_x^2+u_y^2-2e^{u_t}$, respectively. A complete description of integrable cubic and quartic Lagrangians is obtained. Up to the equivalence transformations, the list of integrable cubic Lagrangians reduces to three examples, $ f=u_xu_yu_t, f=u_x^2u_y+u_yu_t, and f=u_x^3/3+u_y^2-u_xu_t ({\rm dKP}).$ There exists a unique integrable quartic Lagrangian, $ f=u_x^4+2u_x^2u_t-u_xu_y-u_t^2.$ We conjecture that these examples exhaust the list of integrable polynomial Lagrangians which are essentially three-dimensional (it was verified that there exist no polynomial integrable Lagrangians of degree five). We prove that the Euler-Lagrange equations are integrable by the method of hydrodynamic reductions if and only if they possess a scalar pseudopotential playing the role of a dispersionless `Lax pair'. Tri-Hamiltonian Structures of The Egorov Systems

The description of the Egorov hydrodynamic type systems is presented in language of conservation laws. Under extra conditions of semisimplicity and homogeneity tri-Hamiltonian structures of such systems are described. Even and odd cases are related with flat and metric of constant curvature, respectively. Some important and well-known examples like averaged by Whitham approach and dispersionless limits of vector NLS and vector LSR are investigated.

On superposition of the autoBaecklund transformations for (2+1)-dimensional integrable systems

The usual superposition formulas for Baecklund transformations of (2+1)-dimensional integrable systems include quadratures unlike the well known case of (1+1)-dimensional inegrable systems where the fourth solution is found with algebraic operations. In the present paper we show how in the case of (2+1)-dimensional integrable systems one can find an extended formula of nonlinear superposition such that the resulting solution will be found uniquely from the given previous solution with algebraic operations.

Classical differential geometry and integrability of systems of hydrodynamic type

Remarkable parallelism between the theory of integrable systems of first-order quasilinear PDE and some old results in projective and affine differential geometry of conjugate nets, Laplace equations, their Bianchi-Baecklund transformations is exposed. These results were recently applied by I.M.Krichever and B.A.Dubrovin to prove integrability of some models in topological field theories. Within the geometric framework we derive some new integrable (in a sense to be discussed) generalizations describing N-wave resonant interactions.
