Informationally Complete Orbital Angular Momentum Tomography with Intensity Measurements

In this work we study the tomography of the spatial structure of light. We develop a simple technique that allows one to perform the tomography over the space of fixed order modes. The technique is based on two spatially resolved intensity measurements, the second of which is performed after the light field has undergone an astigmatic transformation implemented by a tilted lens. We demonstrate that this method is informationally complete within the considered subspaces, which is experimentally verified both in the intense and the photocount regime. We also study the effect of obstructions in our ability to reconstruct the states. The work here presented is expected to help the development of characterization techniques in the field of structured light and in its application for both classical and quantum information protocols.

Indirect evidence for the Gouy phase for matter waves

We show that the well known geometric phase, the Gouy phase in optics can be defined for matter waves in vacuum as well. In particular we show that the underlying physics for the "matter waves" Gouy phase is the generalized Schroedinger-Robertson uncertainty principle, more specifically, the off diagonal elements of the covariance matrix. Recent experiments involving the diffraction of fullerene molecules and the uncertainty principle are shown to be quantitatively consistent with the existence of a Gouy phase for matter waves.

Measurement of spatial qubits

In this paper we study the state determination for composite systems of two spatial qubits. We show, theoretically, that one can use the technique of quantum tomography to reconstruct the density matrixes of these systems. This tomographic reconstruction is based on the free evolution of the spatial qubits and a postelection process.

Generating mixtures of spatial qubits

In a recent letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 100501 (2005)], we presented a scheme for generating pure entangled states of spatial qudits ($D$-dimensional quantum systems) by using the momentum transverse correlation of the parametric down-converted photons. In this work we discuss a generalization of this process to enable the creation of mixed states. With the technique proposed we experimentally generated a mixture of two spatial qubits.

Geometrically induced singular behavior of entanglement

We show that the geometry of the set of quantum states plays a crucial role in the behavior of entanglement in different physical systems. More specifically it is shown that singular points at the border of the set of unentangled states appear as singularities in the dynamics of entanglement of smoothly varying quantum states. We illustrate this result by implementing a photonic parametric down conversion experiment. Moreover, this effect is connected to recently discovered singularities in condensed matter models.

Spatial antibunching of photons with parametric down-conversion

The theoretical framework behind a recent experiment by Nogueira et. al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86}, 4009 (2001)] of spatial antibunching in a two-photon state generated by collinear type II parametric down-conversion and a birefringent double-slit is presented. The fourth-order quantum correlation function is evaluated and shown to violate the classical Schwarz-type inequality, ensuring that the field does not have a classical analog. We expect these results to be useful in the rapidly growing fields of quantum imaging and quantum information.

Experimental observation of spatial antibunching of photons

We report an interference experiment that shows transverse spatial antibunching of photons. Using collinear parametric down-conversion in a Young-type fourth-order interference setup we show interference patterns that violate the classical Schwarz inequality and should not exist at all in a classical description.

A double-slit quantum eraser

We report a quantum eraser experiment which actually uses a Young double-slit to create interference. The experiment can be considered an optical analogy of an experiment proposed by Scully, Englert and Walther. One photon of an entangled pair is incident on a Young double-slit of appropriate dimensions to create an interference pattern in a distant detection region. Quarter-wave plates, oriented so that their fast axes are orthogonal, are placed in front of each slit to serve as which-path markers. The quarter-wave plates mark the polarization of the interfering photon and thus destroy the interference pattern. To recover interference, we measure the polarization of the other entangled photon. In addition, we perform the experiment under delayed erasure circumstances.

Image and Coherence Transfer in the Stimulated Down-conversion Process

The intensity transverse profile of the light produced in the process of stimulated down-conversion is derived. A quantum-mechanical treatment is used. We show that the angular spectrum of the pump laser can be transferred to the stimulated down-converted beam, so that images can also be transferred from the pump to the down-converted beam. We also show that the transfer can occur from the stimulating beam to the down-converted one. Finally, we study the process of diffraction through an arbitrarily shaped screen. For the special case of a double-slit, the interference pattern is explicitly obtained. The visibility for the spontaneous emitted light is in accordance with the van Cittert - Zernike theorem for incoherent light, while the visibility for the stimulated emitted light is unity. The overall visibility is in accordance with previous experimental results.

Quantum Erasure by Transverse Indistinguishability

We show that the first experiment with double-slits and twin photons detected in coincidence can be understood as a quantum eraser. The ``which path'' information is erased by transverse indistinguishability obtained by means of mode filtering in the twin conjugated beam. A delayed choice quantum eraser based on the same scheme is proposed.
