Eigenvalue Problem in Two Dimensions for an Irregular Boundary II: Neumann Condition

We formulate a systematic elegant perturbative scheme for determining the eigenvalues of the Helmholtz equation (\bigtriangledown^{2} + k^{2})ψ = 0 in two dimensions when the normal derivative of ψ vanishes on an irregular closed curve. Unique feature of this method, unlike other perturbation schemes, is that it does not require a separate formalism to treat degeneracies. Degenerate states are handled equally elegantly as the non-degenerate ones. A real parameter, extracted from the parameters defining the irregular boundary, serves as a perturbation parameter in this scheme as opposed to earlier schemes where the perturbation parameter is an artificial one. The efficacy of the proposed scheme is gauged by calculating the eigenvalues for elliptical and supercircular boundaries and comparing with the results obtained numerically. We also present a simple and interesting semi-empirical formula, determining the eigenspectrum of the 2D Helmholtz equation with the Dirichlet or the Neumann condition for a supercircular boundary. A comparison of the eigenspectrum for several low-lying modes obtained by employing the formula with the corresponding numerical estimates shows good agreement for a wide range of the supercircular exponent.

A semi-empirical formula for the eigenspectrum of the 2-dimensional Helmholtz equation with Dirichlet or Neumann condition on a supercircular boundary

In a recent paper \cite{chak} Chakraborty et al have put forward a perturbative formulation for solving the 2 dimensional homogeneous Helmholtz equation with the Dirichlet condition on a supercircular boundary. In this note a single parameter (supercircular exponent or exponent) semi-empirical formula, giving the eigenspectrum, is presented for the same problem. The same formula now is also applicable for the Neumann type boundary condition. The formula is put to test by comparing the obtained eigenvalues for several low lying states with their corresponding numerical estimates. It is seen that the formula gives results with a remarkable accuracy for a wide range of the supercircular exponent.

Stau detection at neutrino telescopes in scenarios with supersymmetric dark matter

We have studied the detection of long-lived staus at the IceCube neutrino telescope, after their production inside the Earth through the inelastic scattering of high energy neutrinos. The theoretical predictions for the stau flux are calculated in two scenarios in which the presence of long-lived staus is naturally associated to viable supersymmetric dark matter. Namely, we consider the cases with superWIMP (gravitino or axino) and neutralino dark matter (along the coannihilation region). In both scenarios the maximum value of the stau flux turns out to be about 1 event/yr in regions with a light stau. This is consistent with light gravitinos, with masses constrained by an upper limit which ranges from 0.2 to 15 GeV, depending on the stau mass. Likewise, it is compatible with axinos with a mass of about 1 GeV and a very low reheating temperature of order 100 GeV. In the case of the neutralino dark matter this favours regions with a low value of tan(beta), for which the neutralino-stau coannihilation region occurs for smaller values of the stau mass. Finally, we study the case of a general supergravity theory and show how for specific choices of non-universal soft parameters the predicted stau flux can increase moderately.

Potential and mass-matrix in gauged N=4 supergravity

We discuss the potential and mass-matrix of gauged N=4 matter coupled supergravity for the case of six matter multiplets, extending previous work by considering the dependence on all scalars. We consider all semi-simple gauge groups and analyse the potential and its first and second derivatives in the origin of the scalar manifold. Although we find in a number of cases an extremum with a positive cosmological constant, these are not stable under fluctuations of all scalar fields.

De Sitter solutions in N=4 matter coupled supergravity

We investigate the scalar potential of gauged N=4 supergravity with matter. The extremum in the SU(1,1)/U(1) scalars is obtained for an arbitrary number of matter multiplets. The constraints on the matter scalars are solved in terms of an explicit parametrisation of an SO(6,6+n) element. For the case of six matter multiplets we discuss both compact and noncompact gauge groups. In an example involving noncompact groups and four scalars we find a potential with an absolute minimum and a positive cosmological constant.

Non-BPS Branes in a Type I Orbifold

We analyse the spectrum of non-BPS branes in the type I theory on the orbifold $T^4/{\cal I}_4$. We present a detailed analysis of the action of the worldsheet parity $Ω$ on the different D-brane boundary state sectors of type IIB on $T^4/{\cal I}_4$, using the covariant formulation. Using these results we derive the spectrum of branes in the type I orbifold. We find $\Z_2$- and $\Z$- charged non-BPS branes. A study of the stability of these branes in the type I orbifold is also presented. We find that the type I non-BPS D-particle and D-instanton remain stable in the orbifold. The D-particle carries no charge whereas the non-BPS D-instanton can carry twisted R-R charge.

The GZK Bound and Strong Neutrino-Nucleon Interactions above 10^19eV: a Progress Report

Cosmic ray events above 10^19 eV have posed a fundamental problem for more than thirty years. Recent measurements indicate that these events do not show the features predicted by the GZK bound. The events may, in addition, display angular correlations with point sources. If these observations are confirmed for point sources further than 50 - 100 Mpc, then strong interactions for the neutrino are indicated. Recent work on extra spatial dimensions provides a context for massive spin-2 exchanges capable of generating cross sections in the 1 - 100 mb range, as indicated by data. Applications of extra-dimension physics are controversial, and we comment on several contentious issues.

Extra dimensions and Strong Neutrino-Nucleon interactions above $10^{19}$ eV : Breaking the GZK Barrier

Cosmic ray events above $10^{20}$ eV are on the verge of confronting fundamental particle physics. The neutrino is the only candidate primary among established particles capable of crossing 100 Mpc intergalactic distances unimpeded. The magnitude of $νN$ cross sections indicated by events, plus consistency with the Standard Model at low-energy, point to new physics of massive spin-2 exchange. In models based on extra dimensions, we find that the $νN$ cross section rises to typical hadronic values of between 1 and 100 mb at energies above $10^{20}$ eV. Our calculations take into account constraints of unitarity. We conclude that air-showers observed with energies above $10^{19}$ eV are consistent with neutrino primaries and extra-dimension models. An {\it upper bound} of 1-10 TeV on the mass scale at which graviton exchange becomes strong in current Kaluza-Klein models follows.

T-duality and Actions for Non-BPS D-branes

We employ T-duality to restrict the tachyon dependence of effective actions for non-BPS D-branes. For the Born-Infeld part the criteria of T-duality and supersymmetry are satisfied by a simple extension of the D-brane Born-Infeld action.

Intersecting Branes in Matrix Theory

We construct BPS states in the matrix description of M-theory. Starting from a set of basic M-theory branes, we study pair intersections which preserve supersymmetry. The fractions of the maximal supersymmetry obtained in this way are 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 3/16 and 1/16. In explicit examples we establish that the matrix BPS states correspond to (intersecting) brane configurations that are obtained from the d=11 supersymmetry algebra. This correspondence for the 1/2 supersymmetric branes includes the precise relations between the charges.

Four-dimensional High-Branes as Intersecting D-Branes

We show that a class of extremal four-dimensional supersymmetric ``high-branes'', i.e. string and domain wall solutions, can be interpreted as intersections of four ten-dimensional Dirichlet branes. These $d=4$ solutions are related, via $T$-duality in ten dimensions, to the four-dimensional extremal Maxwell/scalar black holes that are characterized by a scalar coupling parameter $a$ with $a=0,1/\sqrt{3}, 1, \sqrt{3}$.

A BRST Analysis of $W$-symmetries

We perform a classical BRST analysis of the symmetries corresponding to a generic $w_N$-algebra. An essential feature of our method is that we write the $w_N$-algebra in a special basis such that the algebra manifestly has a ``nested'' set of subalgebras $v_N^N \subset v_N^{N-1} \subset \dots \subset v_N^2 \equiv w_N$ where the subalgebra $v_N^i\ (i=2, \dots ,N)$ consists of generators of spin $s=\{i,i+1,\dots ,N\}$, respectively. In the new basis the BRST charge can be written as a ``nested'' sum of $N-1$ nilpotent BRST charges. In view of potential applications to (critical and/or non-critical) $W$-string theories we discuss the quantum extension of our results. In particular, we present the quantum BRST-operator for the $W_4$-algebra in the new basis. For both critical and non-critical $W$-strings we apply our results to discuss the relation with minimal models.

On the BRST Operator of $W$-Strings

We discuss the conditions under which the BRST operator of a $W$-string can be written as the sum of two operators that are separately nilpotent and anticommute with each other. We illustrate our results with the example of the non-critical $W_3$-string. Furthermore, we apply our results to make a conjecture about a relationship between the spectrum of a non-critical $W_n$-string and a $W_{n-1}$-string.
