On a three-body confinement force in hadron spectroscopy

Recently it has been argued that a three-body colour confinement interaction can affect the stability condition of a three-quark system and the spectrum of a tetraquark described by any constituent quark model. Here we discuss the role of a three-body colour confinement interaction in a simple quark model and present some of its implications for the spectra of baryons, tetraquarks and six-quark systems.

QCD at high baryon density in a random matrix model

A high density diquark phase seems to be a generic feature of QCD. If so it should also be reproduced by random matrix models. We discuss a specific one in which the random matrix elements of the Dirac operator are supplemented by a finite chemical potential and by non-random elements which model the formation of instanton-anti-instanton molecules. Comparing our results to those found in a previous investigation by Vanderheyden and Jackson we find additional support for our starting assumption, namely that the existence of a high density diquark phase is common to all QCD-like models.

Relativistic Faddeev approach to the NJL model at finite density

We study the nucleon solution of the relativistic Faddeev equation as a function of density in the framework of a generalized Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. We truncate the interacting two-body channels to the scalar diquark channel, the coupling constant of which is treated as a parameter. A 3-momentum cut-off is used to regularize the model. The Faddeev equation is solved numerically using the methods developed by Tjon and others. At zero density the nucleon is bound only for unrealistically large values of the scalar coupling and this binding energy decreases quickly with increasing density.

Heavy-Flavour Pentaquarks in a Chiral Constituent Quark Model

Within the chiral constituent quark model of Glozman and Riska, we discuss the stability of heavy pentaquarks, i.e. hadrons containing four light quarks and a heavy antiquark. The spin-dependent part of the Hamiltonian is dominated by the short-range part of the Goldstone-boson-exchange interaction. We find that these systems are not bound, having an energy above the lowest dissociation threshold into a baryon and a meson.

Heavy hexaquarks in a chiral constituent quark model

We discuss the stability of hexaquark systems of type uuddsQ (Q=c or b) within a chiral constituent quark model which successfully describes the baryon spectra including the charmed ones. We find these systems highly unstable against strong decays and give a comparison with some of the previous literature.

How the "H-particle" unravels the quark dynamics

It is shown that the short-range part of the Goldstone boson exchange interaction between the constituent quarks which explains baryon spectroscopy and the short-range repulsion in the NN system induces a strong short-range repulsion in the flavour-singlet state of the $ΛΛ$ system with $J^P=0^+$. It then suggests that a deeply bound H-particle should not exist. We also compare our approach with other models employing different hyperfine interactions between quarks in the nonperturbative regime of QCD.

The Nucleon-Nucleon Interaction in a Chiral Constituent Quark Model

We study the short-range nucleon-nucleon interaction in a chiral constituent quark model by diagonalizing a Hamiltonian comprising a linear confinement and a Goldstone boson exchange interaction between quarks. The six-quark harmonic oscillator basis contains up to two excitation quanta. We show that the highly dominant configuration is $\mid s^4p^2[42]_O [51]_{FS}>$ due to its specific flavour-spin symmetry. Using the Born-Oppenheimer approximation we find a strong effective repulsion at zero separation between nucleons in both $^3S_1$ and $^1S_0$ channels. The symmetry structure of the highly dominant configuration implies the existence of a node in the S-wave relative motion wave function at short distances. The amplitude of the oscillation of the wave function at short range will be however strongly suppressed. We discuss the mechanism leading to the effective short-range repulsion within the chiral constituent quark model as compared to that related with the one-gluon exchange interaction.

New approach to $^4$He charge distribution

We present a study of the $^4$He charge distribution based on realistic nucleonic wave functions and incorporation of the nucleon's quark substructure. The central depression of the proton point density seen in modern four-body calculations is too small by itself to lead to a correct description of the charge distribution. We utilize six-quark structures calculated in the Chromodielectric Model for N-N interactions, and we find a swelling of the proton charge distribution as the internucleon distance decreases. These charge distributions are combined with the $^4$He wave function using the Independent Pair Approximation and two-body distributions generated from Green's Function Monte Carlo calculations. We obtain a reasonably good fit to the experimental charge distribution without including meson exchange currents.

Study of Multiquarks Systems in a Chiral Quark Model

We discuss the stability of multiquark systems within the recent model of Glozman et al. where the chromomagnetic hyperfine interaction is replaced by pseudoscalar-meson exchange contributions. In this model the (u,d) diquark S=0 I=0 is strongly bound (more than for the chromomagnetic interaction) and this leads to a bound heavy tetraquark QQ\bar q\bar q where the light quarks are in the S=0 I=0 configuration. We study the stability of other multiquark systems as well.

Tetraquarks with colour-blind forces in chiral quark models

We discuss the stability of multiquark systems within the recent model of Glozman et al. where the chromomagnetic hyperfine interaction is replaced by pseudoscalar-meson exchange contributions. We find that such an interaction binds a heavy tetraquark systems $QQ\bar q\bar q$ ($Q=c,b and q=u,d)$ by 0.2-0.4 GeV. This is at variance with results of previous models where $cc\bar q\bar q$ is unstable.

The "Hole" In He

The measurement and analysis of electron scattering from He-3 and He-4 by Sick and collaborators reported 20 years ago remains a matter of current interest. By unfolding the measured free-proton charge distribution, they deduced a depression in the central point nucleon density, which is not found in few-body calculations based on realistic potentials. We find that using wave functions from such calculations we can obtain good fits to the He charge distributions under the assumption that the proton charge size expands toward the center of the nucleus. The relationship to 6-quark Chromo-Dielectric Model calculations, is discussed. The expansion is larger than than the predictions of mean field bag calculations by others or our CDM calculations in the independent pair approximation. There is interest here in the search for a "smoking gun" signal of quark substructure.

The Nucleon-Nucleon Interaction in the Chromo-Dielectric Soliton Model: Dynamics

The present work is an extension of a previous study of the nucleon-nucleon interaction based on the chromo-dielectric soliton model. The former approach was static, leading to an adiabatic potential. Here we perform a dynamical study in the framework of the Generator Coordinate Method. In practice, we derive an approximate Hill-Wheeler differential equation and obtain a local nucleon-nucleon potential as a function of a mean generator coordinate. This coordinate is related to an effective separation distance between the two nucleons by a Fujiwara transformation. This latter relationship is especially useful in studying the quark substructure of light nuclei. We investigate the explicit contribution of the one-gluon exchange part of the six-quark Hamiltonian to the nucleon-nucleon potential, and we find that the dynamics are responsible for a significant part of the short-range N-N repulsion.

The Nucleon-Nucleon Potential in the Chromo-Dielectric Soliton Model: Statics

We study the N-N interaction in the framework of the chromo-dielectric soliton model. Here, the long-range parts of the nonabelian gluon self-interactions are assumed to give rise to a color-dielectric function which is parameterized in terms of an effective scalar background field. The six-quark system is confined in a deformed mean field through an effective non-linear interaction between the quarks and the scalar field. The CDM is covariant, respects chiral invariance, leads to absolute color confinement and is free of the spurious long range Van der Waals forces which trouble non-relativistic investigations employing a confining potential. Six-quark molecular-type configurations are generated as a function of deformation and their energies are evaluated in a coupled channel analysis. By using molecular states instead of cluster model wave functions, all important six-quark configurations are properly taken into account. The corresponding Hamiltonian includes the effective interaction between the quarks and the scalar background field and quark-quark interactions generated through one gluon exchange treated in Coulomb gauge. When evaluating the gluonic propagators, the inhomogeneity and deformation of the dielectric medium are taken into account. Results for the adiabatic nucleon-nucleon potential are presented, and the various contributions are discussed. Finally, an outlook is given on how, in the next stage of our investigation, the dynamical effects will be incorporated by employing the generator coordinate method.
