Spin-lattice coupling, frustration and magnetic order in multiferroic RMnO3

We have performed high resolution neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering experiments in the frustrated multiferroic hexagonal compounds RMnO3 (R=Ho, Yb, Sc, Y), which provide evidence of a strong magneto-elastic coupling in the the whole family. We can correlate the atomic positions, the type of magnetic structure and the nature of the spin waves whatever the R ion and temperature. The key parameter is the position of the Mn ions in the unit cell with respect to a critical threshold of 1/3, which determines the sign of the coupling between Mn triangular planes.

Quantized spin waves in the metallic state of magnetoresistive manganites

High resolution spin waves measurements have been carried out in ferromagnetic (F) La(1-x)(Sr,Ca)xMnO3 with x(Sr)=0.15, 0.175, 0.2, 0.3 and x(Ca)=0.3. In all q-directions, close to the zone boundary, the spin wave spectra consist of several energy levels, with the same values in the metallic and the x\approx 1/8 ranges. Mainly the intensity varies, jumping from the lower energy levels determined in the x\approx 1/8 range to the higher energy ones observed in the metallic state. On the basis of a quantitative agreement found for x(Sr)=0.15 in a model of ordered 2D clusters, the spin wave anomalies of the metallic state can be interpreted in terms of quantized spin waves within the same 2D clusters, embedded in a 3D matrix.

Hybrid Goldstone modes in multiferroics

By using polarized inelastic neutron scattering measurements, we show that the spin-lattice quantum entanglement in mutliferroics results in hybrid elementary excitations, involving spin and lattice degrees of freedom. These excitations can be considered as multiferroic Godstone modes. We argue that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction could be at the origin of this hybridization.

Magnetic order in YbMnO$_3$ studied by Neutron Diffraction and Mössbauer Spectroscopy

The magnetic ordering of the hexagonal multiferroic compound YbMnO$_3$ has been studied between 100 K and 1.5 K by combining neutron powder diffraction, $^{170}$Yb Mössbauer spectroscopy and magnetization measurements. The Yb moments of the two crystallographic sites order at two different temperatures, the $4b$ site together with the Mn moments (at $T_N \simeq$85 K) and the $2a$ site well below (at 3.5 K). The temperature dependences of the Mn and Yb moments are explained within a molecular field model, showing that the $4b$ and $2a$ sites order via Yb-Mn and Yb-Yb interactions respectively. A simple picture taking into account the local Mn environment of the Rare earth R ($4b$) ion is proposed to couple R and Mn orders in hexagonal RMnO$_3$ manganites. The nature and symmetry of the R-Mn interactions yielding the R order are discussed.

Mechanisms of exchange bias with multiferroic BiFeO3 epitaxial thin films

We have combined neutron scattering and piezoresponse force microscopy to study the relation between the exchange bias observed in CoFeB/BiFeO3 heterostructures and the multiferroic domain structure of the BiFeO3 films. We show that the exchange field scales with the inverse of the ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic domain size, as expected from Malozemoff's model of exchange bias extended to multiferroics. Accordingly, polarized neutron reflectometry reveals the presence of uncompensated spins in the BiFeO3 film at the interface with the CoFeB. In view of these results we discuss possible strategies to switch the magnetization of a ferromagnet by an electric field using BiFeO3.

Structural distortion and magnetism of BiFeO3 epitaxial thin films: a Raman spectroscopy and neutron diffraction study

A previous study of the growth conditions has shown that single-phase BiFeO3 thin films can only be obtained in a narrow pressure-temperature window and that these films display a weak magnetic moment. Here we study in more detail the structure and the magnetism of single-phase BiFeO3 films by means of reciprocal space mapping, Raman spectroscopy and neutron diffraction. X-ray and Raman data suggest that the BiFeO3 structure is tetragonal for 70 nm-thick films and changes to monoclinic for 240 nm-thick films, thus remaining different from that of the bulk (rhombohedral) structure. In the 240 nm monoclinically distorted film neutron diffraction experiments allow the observation of a G-type antiferromagnetic order as in bulk single crystals. However, the satellite peaks associated with the long-wavelength cycloid present in bulk BiFeO3 are not observed. The relevance of these findings for the exploitation of the magnetoelectric properties of BiFeO3 is discussed.
