Science with a small two-band UV-photometry mission I: Mission description and follow-up observations of stellar transients

This is the first in a collection of three papers introducing the science with an ultra-violet (UV) space telescope on an approximately 130~kg small satellite with a moderately fast re-pointing capability and a real-time alert communication system approved for a Czech national space mission. The mission, called Quick Ultra-Violet Kilonova surveyor - QUVIK, will provide key follow-up capabilities to increase the discovery potential of gravitational wave observatories and future wide-field multi-wavelength surveys. The primary objective of the mission is the measurement of the UV brightness evolution of kilonovae, resulting from mergers of neutron stars, to distinguish between different explosion scenarios. The mission, which is designed to be complementary to the Ultraviolet Transient Astronomy Satellite - ULTRASAT, will also provide unique follow-up capabilities for other transients both in the near- and far-UV bands. Between the observations of transients, the satellite will target other objects described in this collection of papers, which demonstrates that a small and relatively affordable dedicated UV-space telescope can be transformative for many fields of astrophysics.

A peculiar hard X-ray counterpart of a Galactic fast radio burst

Fast radio bursts are bright, millisecond-scale radio flashes of yet unknown physical origin. Recently, their extragalactic nature has been demonstrated and an increasing number of the sources have been found to repeat. Young, highly magnetized, isolated neutron stars - magnetars - have been suggested as the most promising candidates for fast radio burst progenitors owing to their energetics and high X-ray flaring activity. Here we report the detection with the Konus-Wind of a hard X-ray event of April 28, 2020, temporarily coincident with a bright, two-peak radio burst from the Galactic magnetar SGR~1935+2154 with properties remarkably similar to those of fast radio bursts. We show that two peaks of the double-peaked X-ray burst coincide in time with the radio peaks, confirming that the X-ray and radio emission most likely have a common origin. Thus, this is the first simultaneous detection of a fast radio burst from a Galactic magnetar and its high-energy counterpart. The total energy emitted in X-rays in this burst is typical of bright short magnetar bursts, but an unusual hardness of its energy spectrum strongly distinguish the April 28 event among multiple "ordinary" flares detected from SGR~1935+2154 previously. This, and a recent non-detection of radio emission from about one hundred typical soft bursts from SGR 1935+2154 favors the idea that bright, FRB-like magnetar signals are associated with rare, hard-spectrum X-ray bursts, which implied rate ($\sim$ 0.04 yr$^{-1}$ magnetar$^{-1}$) appears consistent with the rate estimate of SGR 1935+2154-like radio bursts (0.007 - 0.04 yr$^{-1}$ magnetar$^{-1}$).

Allen: A high level trigger on GPUs for LHCb

We describe a fully GPU-based implementation of the first level trigger for the upgrade of the LHCb detector, due to start data taking in 2021. We demonstrate that our implementation, named Allen, can process the 40 Tbit/s data rate of the upgraded LHCb detector and perform a wide variety of pattern recognition tasks. These include finding the trajectories of charged particles, finding proton-proton collision points, identifying particles as hadrons or muons, and finding the displaced decay vertices of long-lived particles. We further demonstrate that Allen can be implemented in around 500 scientific or consumer GPU cards, that it is not I/O bound, and can be operated at the full LHC collision rate of 30 MHz. Allen is the first complete high-throughput GPU trigger proposed for a HEP experiment.

Unified approach to redshift in cosmological /black hole spacetimes and synchronous frame

Usually, interpretation of redshift in static spacetimes (for example, near black holes) is opposed to that in cosmology. In this methodological note we show that both explanations are unified in a natural picture. This is achieved if considering the static spacetime one (i) makes a transition to a synchronous frame, (ii) returns to the original frame by means of local Lorentz boost. To reach our goal, we consider a rather general class of spherically symmetric spacetimes. In doing so, we construct frames that generalize the well-known Lemaitre and Painlevé--Gullstand ones and elucidate the relation between them. This helps to understanding in an unifying approach, how gravitation reveals itself in different branches of general relativity. This can be useful for general relativity university courses.

Plasmon-polariton induced modification of silicon nanocrystals photoluminescence in presence of gold nanostripes

We report the results of theoretical and experimental studies of photoluminescence of silicon nanocrystals in the proximity of plasmonic modes of different types. In our samples, the type of plasmonic mode is determined by the filling ratio of a one-dimensional gold grating which covers the thin film with silicon nanocrystals on a quartz substrate. We analyze the extinction and photoluminesce spectra of silicon nanocrystals and show that the emitted light is coupled to the corresponding plasmonic mode. We also demonstrate the modification of the extinction and photoluminesce spectra under the transition from surface plasmon-polaritons to waveguide plasmon-polaritons with the decrease of the gold filling ratio from 1 to 0.35. Finally, we analyze the contribution of individual silicon nanocrystals to the overall photoluminescence intensity. We conclude that silicon nanocrystals ensemble can be broken down into optically bright and optically dark nanocrystals. The experimental extinction and photoluminescence spectra are in good agreement with theoretical calculations performed by the Fourier modal method in the scattering matrix form.

A Search for Pulsed and Bursty Radio Emission from X-ray Dim Isolated Neutron Stars

We have carried out a search for radio emission from six X-ray dim isolated neutron stars (XDINSs) observed with the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Radio Telescope (GBT) at 820 MHz. No bursty or pulsed radio emission was found down to a 4sigma significance level. The corresponding flux limit is 0.01-0.04 mJy depending on the integration time for the particular source and pulse duty cycle of 2%. These are the most sensitive limits yet on radio emission from these objects.

Periodicity in the transient regime of exhaustive polling systems

We consider an exhaustive polling system with three nodes in its transient regime under a switching rule of generalized greedy type. We show that, for the system with Poisson arrivals and service times with finite second moment, the sequence of nodes visited by the server is eventually periodic almost surely. To do this, we construct a dynamical system, the triangle process, which we show has eventually periodic trajectories for almost all sets of parameters and in this case we show that the stochastic trajectories follow the deterministic ones a.s. We also show there are infinitely many sets of parameters where the triangle process has aperiodic trajectories and in such cases trajectories of the stochastic model are aperiodic with positive probability.

Neutron star cooling constraints for color superconductivity in hybrid stars

We apply the recently developed Log N - Log S test of compact star cooling theories for the first time to hybrid stars with a color superconducting quark matter core. While there is not yet a microscopically founded superconducting quark matter phase which would fulfill constraints from cooling phenomenology, we explore the hypothetical 2SC+X phase and show that the magnitude and density-dependence of the X-gap can be chosen to satisfy a set of tests: temperature - age (T - t), the brightness constraint, Log N - Log S, and the mass spectrum constraint. The latter test appears as a new conjecture from the present investigation.

Population synthesis as a probe of neutron star thermal evolution

The study of thermal emission from isolated, cooling neutron stars plays a key role in probing the physical conditions of both the star crust and the core. The comparison of theoretical models for the star thermal evolution with the surface temperature derived from X-ray observations of sources of different age is one of the main tools to investigate the properties of the interior and constrain the equation of state. Here we propose to use population synthesis studies as an independent approach to test the physics governing the star cooling. Theoretical Log N - Log S distributions depend on the assumed neutron star thermal evolution. We have computed distributions for several different cooling scenarios and found that comparison with the observed Log N - Log S of isolated neutron stars is effective in discriminating among cooling models. Among the eleven cooling models considered in this paper, all of which may reproduce the observed temperature vs. age diagram, only at most three can explain the Log N - Log S distribution of close-by cooling neutron stars. The Log N - Log S test, being a ``global'' one and despite some limitations, appears capable of complementing the standard temperature vs. age test used up to now.

Gravitational wave experiments and Baksan project "OGRAN"

A brief sketch of the present status of gravitational wave experiments is given. Attention is concentrated to recent observations with the gravitational detector network. The project OGRAN for a combined optic-interferometrical and acoustical gravitation wave antenna planned for installation into underground facilities of the Baksan Neutrino Observatory is presented. We describe general principles of the apparatus, expected sensitivity and current characteristics of the antenna prototype; some ways for sensitivity improvement are also discussed.
