Pairing symmetry in infinite-layer nickelate superconductor

The superconducting infinite-layer nickelate family has risen as a promising platform for revealing the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity. However, its challenging material synthesis has obscured effort in understanding the nature of its ground state and low-lying excitations, which is a prerequisite for identifying the origin of the Cooper pairing in high-temperature superconductors. In particular, the superconducting gap symmetry of nickelates has hardly been investigated and remains controversial. Here, we report the pairing symmetry of the infinite-layer nickelates determined by London penetration depth measurements in neodymium-based (Nd,Sr)NiO$_2$ and lanthanide-based (La,Ca)NiO$_2$ thin films of high crystallinity. A rare-earth-specific order parameter is observed. While the lanthanide nickelates follow dirty line-node behaviour, the neodymium-counterpart exhibits nodeless order parameters such as the $(d+is)$ wave. In contrast to the cuprates, our results suggest that the superconducting order parameter in nickelates is beyond a single $d_(x^2-y^2 )$-wave gap. Furthermore, the superfluid density shows a long tail near the superconducting transition temperature which is consistent with the emergence of a two-dimensional to three-dimensional crossover in the superconducting state. These observations challenge the early theoretical framework and propel further experimental and theoretical interests in the pairing nature of the infinite-layer nickelate family.

White Paper on New Opportunities at the Next-Generation Neutrino Experiments (Part 1: BSM Neutrino Physics and Dark Matter)

With the advent of a new generation of neutrino experiments which leverage high-intensity neutrino beams for precision measurements, it is timely to explore physics topics beyond the standard neutrino-related physics. Given that the realm of beyond the standard model (BSM) physics has been mostly sought at high-energy regimes at colliders, such as the LHC at CERN, the exploration of BSM physics in neutrino experiments will enable complementary measurements at the energy regimes that balance that of the LHC. This is in concert with new ideas for high-intensity beams for fixed target and beam-dump experiments world-wide, e.g., those at CERN. The combination of the high intensity proton beam facilities and massive detectors for precision neutrino oscillation parameter measurements and for CP violation phase measurements will help make BSM physics reachable even in low energy regimes in accelerator based experiments. Large mass detectors with highly precise tracking and energy measurements, excellent timing resolution, and low energy thresholds will enable searches for BSM phenomena from cosmogenic origin, as well. Therefore, it is conceivable that BSM topics in the next generation neutrino experiments could be the dominant physics topics in the foreseeable future, as the precision of the neutrino oscillation parameter and CPV measurements continues to improve. In this spirit, this white paper provides a review of the current landscape of BSM theory in neutrino experiments in two selected areas of the BSM topics - dark matter and neutrino related BSM - and summarizes the current results from existing neutrino experiments to set benchmarks for both theory and experiment. This paper then provides a review of upcoming neutrino experiments throughout the next 10 - 15 year time scale and their capabilities to set the foundation for potential reach in BSM physics in the two aforementioned themes.

On the Higher-Spin Spectrum in Large N Chern-Simons Vector Models

Chern-Simons gauge theories coupled to massless fundamental scalars or fermions define interesting non-supersymmetric 3d CFTs that possess approximate higher-spin symmetries at large N. In this paper, we compute the scaling dimensions of the higher-spin operators in these models, to leading order in the 1/N expansion and exactly in the 't Hooft coupling. We obtain these results in two independent ways: by using conformal symmetry and the classical equations of motion to fix the structure of the current non-conservation, and by a direct Feynman diagram calculation. The full dependence on the 't Hooft coupling can be restored by using results that follow from the weakly broken higher-spin symmetry. This analysis also allows us to obtain some explicit results for the non-conserved, parity-breaking structures that appear in planar three-point functions of the higher-spin operators. At large spin, we find that the anomalous dimensions grow logarithmically with the spin, in agreement with general expectations. This logarithmic behavior disappears in the strong coupling limit, where the anomalous dimensions turn into those of the critical O(N) or Gross-Neveu models, in agreement with the conjectured 3d bosonization duality.

Sample dependence of the structural, vibrational, and electronic properties of a-Si:H: A density-functional-based tight-binding study

The sample dependence of various properties of hydrogenated amorphous silicon ($a$-Si:H) have been studied with 216 silicon atoms and 24 hydrogen atoms using the density functional based tight binding molecular dynamics simulations. The Si-Si and Si-H pair correlation functions are independent of preparation procedure as well as initial conditions, the H-H pair correlation functions are sample dependent. The distribution of hydrogen atoms in all the samples is nonuniform and depends upon the preparation procedure as well as the initial structure from which the hydrogenated amorphous silicon sample is generated. The Si-Si bond length and Si-Si-Si bond angle distributions are nearly independent of sample preparation procedure, but Si-H bond length distributions are sample dependent. The peaks in the vibrational density of states (VDOS) at high frequencies are in reasonable accord with the experimental results. The positions of the high frequency peaks are found to be dependent on the local environment. While the high frequency vibrational modes related to Si-Si bond vibrations are moderately localized, the vibrational modes related to Si-H bond vibrations in $a$-Si:H samples are highly localized. In samples generated from the liquid quench the free energy is smaller, whereas the entropy and specific heat are larger as compared to that of samples generated by hydrogenation of pure amorphous silicon samples. The total electronic density of states and local density of electronic states (LDOS) at Si atom sites are nearly sample independent, while the LDOS at the H atom sites are dependent on the sample preparation procedure.

Vibrational Properties of Nanoscale Materials: From Nanoparticles to Nanocrystalline Materials

The vibrational density of states (VDOS) of nanoclusters and nanocrystalline materials are derived from molecular-dynamics simulations using empirical tight-binding potentials. The results show that the VDOS inside nanoclusters can be understood as that of the corresponding bulk system compressed by the capillary pressure. At the surface of the nanoparticles the VDOS exhibits a strong enhancement at low energies and shows structures similar to that found near flat crystalline surfaces. For the nanocrystalline materials an increased VDOS is found at high and low phonon energies, in agreement with experimental findings. The individual VDOS contributions from the grain centers, grain boundaries, and internal surfaces show that, in the nanocrystalline materials, the VDOS enhancements are mainly caused by the grain-boundary contributions and that surface atoms play only a minor role. Although capillary pressures are also present inside the grains of nanocrystalline materials, their effect on the VDOS is different than in the cluster case which is probably due to the inter-grain coupling of the modes via the grain-boundaries.

Ordering temperatures and critical exponents in Ising spin glasses

We propose a numerical criterion which can be used to obtain accurate and reliable values of the ordering temperatures and critical exponents of spin glasses. Using this method we find an value of the ordering temperature for the $\pm J$ Ising spin glass in three dimensions which is definitely non-zero and in good agreement with previous estimates. We show that the critical exponents of three dimensional Ising spin glasses do not appear to obey the usual universality rules.
