Cloning in nonlinear Hamiltonian quantum and hybrid mechanics

Possibility of state cloning is analyzed in two types of generalizations of quantum mechanics with nonlinear evolution. It is first shown that nonlinear Hamiltonian quantum mechanics does not admit cloning without the cloning machine. It is then demonstrated that the addition of the cloning machine, treated as a quantum or as a classical system, makes the cloning possible by nonlinear Hamiltonian evolution. However, a special type of quantum-classical theory, known as the mean-field Hamiltonian hybrid mechanics, does not admit cloning by natural evolution. The latter represents an example of a theory where it appears to be possible to communicate between two quantum systems at super-luminal speed, but at the same time it is impossible to clone quantum pure states.

Lagrangian form of Schrödinger equation

Lagrangian formulation of quantum mechanical Schrödinger equation is developed in general and illustrated in the eigenbasis of the Hamiltonian and in the coordinate representation. The Lagrangian formulation of physically plausible quantum system results in a well defined second order equation on a real vector space. The Klein-Gordon equation for a real field is shown to be the Lagrangian form of the corresponding Schrödinger equation.

Orbits of hybrid systems as qualitative indicators of quantum dynamics

Hamiltonian theory of hybrid quantum-classical systems is used to study dynamics of the classical subsystem coupled to different types of quantum systems. It is shown that the qualitative properties of orbits of the classical subsystem clearly indicate if the quantum subsystem does or does not have additional conserved observables.

Ehrenfest principle and unitary dynamics of quantum-classical systems with general potential interaction

Representation of classical dynamics by unitary transformations has been used to develop unified description of hybrid classical-quantum systems with particular type of interaction, and to formulate abstract systems interpolating between classical and quantum ones. We solved the problem of unitary description of two interpolating systems with general potential interaction. The general solution is used to show that with arbitrary potential interaction between the two interpolating systems the evolution of the so called unobservable variables is decoupled from that of the observable ones if and only if the interpolation parameters in the two interpolating systems are equal.

Phase space hybrid theory of quantum measurement with nonlinear and stochastic dynamics

A novel theory of hybrid quantum-classical systems is developed, utilizing the mathematical framework of constrained dynamical systems on the quantum-classical phase space. Both, the quantum and the classical descriptions of the respective parts of the hybrid system are treated as fundamental. Therefore, the description of the quantum-classical interaction has to be postulated, and includes the effects of neglected degrees of freedom. Dynamical law of the theory is given in terms of nonlinear stochastic differential equations with Hamiltonian and gradient terms. The theory provides a successful dynamical description of the collapse during quantum measurement.

Replay to "Comment on 'Quantum phase for an arbitrary system with finite-dimensional Hilbert space'

We point out the crucial difference between the relative and absolute phase observables treated in our contribution \cite{1} and in the Comment by Hall and Pegg \cite{HP} respectively. The main contribution of our work is to show that the quantum expectation of the relative phase is highly discontinuous function of the frequency and to point out interesting dependence of the phase on the number-theoretic nature of the frequencies.

Statistical ensembles in Hamiltonian formulation of hybrid quantum-classical systems

General statistical ensembles in the Hamiltonian formulation of hybrid quantum-classical systems are analyzed. It is argued that arbitrary probability densities on the hybrid phase space must be considered as the class of possible physically distinguishable statistical ensembles of hybrid systems. Nevertheless, statistical operators associated with the hybrid system and with the quantum subsystem can be consistently defined. Dynamical equations for the statistical operators representing the mixed states of the hybrid system and its quantum subsystem are derived and analyzed. In particular, these equations irreducibly depend on the total probability density on the hybrid phase space.

Hybrid quantum-classical models as constrained quantum systems

Constrained Hamiltonian description of the classical limit is utilized in order to derive consistent dynamical equations for hybrid quantum-classical systems. Starting with a compound quantum system in the Hamiltonian formulation conditions for classical behavior are imposed on one of its subsystems and the corresponding hybrid dynamical equations are derived. The presented formalism suggests that the hybrid systems have properties that are not exhausted by those of quantum and classical systems.

Emergence of classical behavior from the quantum spin

Classical Hamiltonian system of a point moving on a sphere of fixed radius is shown to emerge from the constrained evolution of quantum spin. The constrained quantum evolution corresponds to an appropriate coarse-graining of the quantum states into equivalence classes, and forces the equivalence classes to evolve as single units representing the classical states. The coarse-grained quantum spin with the constrained evolution in the limit of the large spin becomes indistinguishable from the classical system.

Theory of hybrid systems. I. The operator formulation of classical mechanics and semiclassical limit

The algebra of polynomials in operators that represent generalized coordinate and momentum and depend on the Planck constant is defined. The Planck constant is treated as the parameter taking values between zero and some nonvanishing $h_0$. For the second of these two extreme values, introduced operatorial algebra becomes equivalent to the algebra of observables of quantum mechanical system defined in the standard manner by operators in the Hilbert space. For the vanishing Planck constant, the generalized algebra gives the operator formulation of classical mechanics since it is equivalent to the algebra of variables of classical mechanical system defined, as usually, by functions over the phase space. In this way, the semiclassical limit of kinematical part of quantum mechanics is established through the generalized operatorial framework.

Theory of hybrid systems. II. The symmetrized product and redefined Lie bracket of quantum mechanics

The symmetrized product for quantum mechanical observables is defined. It is seen as consisting of the ordinary multiplication and the application of the superoperator that orders the operators of coordinate and momentum. This superoperator is defined in a way that allows obstruction free quantization when the observables are considered from the point of view of the algebra. Then, the operatorial version of the Poisson bracket is defined. It is shown that it has all properties of the Lie bracket and that it can substitute the commutator in the von Neumann equation.

An Operator Formulation of Classical Mechanics and Semiclassical Limit

The generalized h-dependent operator algebra is defined ($0\leq h \leq h_o$). For h= h_o it becomes equivalent to the quantum mechanical algebra of observables and for h=0 it is equivalent to the classical one. We show this by proposing how the main features of both mechanics can be defined in operator form.

Toward the Collapse of State

The basic concepts of classical mechanics are given in the operator form. Then, the hybrid systems approach, with the operator formulation of both quantum and classical sector, is applied to the case of an ideal nonselective measurement. It is found that the dynamical equation, consisting of the Schrödinger and Liouville dynamics, produces noncausal evolution when the initial state of measured system and measuring apparatus is chosen to be as it is demanded in discussions regarding the problem of measurement. Nonuniqueness of possible realizations of transition from pure noncorrelated to mixed correlated state is analyzed in details. It is concluded that collapse of state is the only possible way of evolution of physical systems in this case.

Operator Formulation of Classical Mechanics and the Problem of Measurement

The basic concepts of classical mechanics are given in the operator form. The dynamical equation for a hybrid system, consisting of quantum and classical subsystems, is introduced and analyzed in the case of an ideal nonselective measurement. The nondeterministic evolution is found to be the consequence of the superposition of two different deterministic evolutions.
