Tunable hinge skin states in a hybrid skin-topological sonic crystal

Higher-order topological states in sound have played a pivotal role in understanding the intricate physics underlying sound transport, giving rise to new strategy of manipulating sound. Here we report tunable structure for hinge skin states in a non-Hermitian acoustic metamaterial with hybrid skin-topological effect. Our finding shows that when on-site gain and loss are exquisitely introduced into acoustic topological insulators, chiral edge modes in Hermitian counterpart would respectively become amplified or attenuated at zigzag boundaries. If adjacent gain and loss boundaries are intentionally constructed, hinge skin states would take place at their intersections. By strategically combining non-Hermitian and topological physics, we successfully reveal how higher-order hinge modes originate from lower-order surface states and demonstrate flexible acoustic steering in tunable non-Hermitian blocks. Our findings unveil that skin-topological effect may hold significant applications in designing interesting acoustic devices with unconventional functions such as multidimensional acoustic control and accurate energy harvesting.

Synthetic gauge field enabled realization of bulk- and edge-transported states in an aperiodic acoustic structure

Topologically protected edge states with immunity against various disorders have been implemented in a variety of topological insulators. In this Letter, we reveal that Landau levels in aperiodic acoustic structures can be achieved under different pseudomagnetic fields (PMFs). The produced zero order Landau modes (ZOLMs) could transmit along the channels at the interior or exterior of the inhomogeneous array, which are separately termed as "bulk-transported states" (BTSs) and "edge-transported states" (ETSs). Distinct from conventional valley edge states, the ZOLMs show intriguing self-collimation feature. If a pseudoelectric field (PEF) is further included, the combination of a PMF and PEF can result in the formation of bulk or edge Landau rainbow, where Landau zero modes are distributed at various positions of the bulk or boundary of the sample at different frequencies. The synthetic-gauge-field-controlled topological states can enable fully control of robust transmission, and using the entire footprint of a topological lattice. Our findings not only profoundly advance the current understanding of topological phase matter but also offer new avenues for constructing topological acoustic devices.

Robust diamond-like Fe-Si network in the zero-strain NaxFeSiO4 Cathode

Sodium orthosilicates Na2MSiO4 (M denotes transition metals) have attracted much attention due to the possibility of exchanging two electrons per formula unit. In this work, we report a group of sodium iron orthosilicates Na2FeSiO4, the crystal structures of which are characterized by a diamond-like Fe-Si network. The Fe-Si network is quite robust against the charge/discharge process, which explains the high structural stability observed in experiment. Using the density functional theory within the GGA+U framework and X-ray diffraction studies, the crystal structures and structural stabilities during the sodium insertion/deinsertion process are systematically investigated. The calculated average deintercalation voltages are in good agreement with the experimental result.

Adaptive Genetic Algorithm for Crystal Structure Prediction

We present a genetic algorithm (GA) for structural search that combines the speed of structure exploration by classical potentials with the accuracy of density functional theory (DFT) calculations in an adaptive and iterative way. This strategy increases the efficiency of the DFT-based GA by several orders of magnitude. This gain allows considerable increase in size and complexity of systems that can be studied by first principles. The method's performance is illustrated by successful structure identifications of complex binary and ternary inter-metallic compounds with 36 and 54 atoms per cell, respectively. The discovery of a multi-TPa Mg-silicate phase with unit cell containing up to 56 atoms is also reported. Such phase is likely to be an essential component of terrestrial exoplanetary mantles.

New Formulation of the First Law of Black Hole Thermodynamics: A Stringy Analogy

We consider the first laws of thermodynamics for a pair of systems made up of the two horizons of a Kerr-Newman black hole. These two systems are constructed in such a way that we only demand their ``horizon areas'' to be the sum and difference of that of the outer and inner horizons of their prototype. Remarkably, these two copies bear a striking resemblance to the right- and left-movers in string theory and D-brane physics. Our reformulation of the first law of black hole thermodynamics can be thought of as an analogy of thermodynamics of effective string or D-brane models.

Entropy of a Kerr-de Sitter black hole due to arbitrary spin fields

The Newman-Penrose formalism is used to derive the Teukolsky master equations controlling massless scalar, neutrino, electromagnetic, gravitino, and gravitational field perturbations of the Kerr-de Sitter spacetime. Then the quantum entropy of a non-extreme Kerr-de Sitter black hole due to arbitrary spin fields is calculated by the improved thin-layer brick wall model. It is shown that the subleading order contribution to the entropy is dependent on the square of the spins of particles and that of the specific angular momentum of black holes as well as the cosmological constant. The logarithmic correction of the spins of particles to the entropy relies on the rotation of the black hole and the effect of the cosmological constant.

Hawking Radiation of Dirac Particles in an Arbitrarily Accelerating Kinnersley Black Hole

Quantum thermal effect of Dirac particles in an arbitrarily accelerating Kinnersley black hole is investigated by using the method of generalized tortoise coordinate transformation. Both the location and the temperature of the event horizon depend on the advanced time and the angles. The Hawking thermal radiation spectrum of Dirac particles contains a new term which represents the interaction between particles with spin and black holes with acceleration. This spin-acceleration coupling effect is absent from the thermal radiation spectrum of scalar particles.

The Hawking radiation of Dirac particles in an arbitrarily rectilinearly accelerating Kinnersley black hole with electro-magnetic charge and cosmological constant is investigated by using method of the generalized tortoise coordinate transformation. Both the location and the temperature of the event horizon depend on the time and the polar angle. The Hawking thermal radiation spectrum of Dirac particles is also derived. Hawking Radiation of Photons in a Vaidya-de Sitter Black Hole

Hawking evaporation of photons in a Vaidya-de Sitter black hole is investigated by using the method of generalized tortoise coordinate transformation. Both the location and the temperature of the event horizon depend on the time. It is shown that Hawking radiation of photons exists only for the complex Maxwell scalar $ϕ_0$ in the advanced Eddington-Finkelstein coordinate system. This asymmetry of Hawking radiation for different components of Maxwell fields probably arises from the asymmetry of spacetime in the advanced Eddington-Finkelstein coordinate system. It is shown that the black body radiant spectrum of photons resembles that of Klein-Gordon particles. PACS numbers: 04.70.Dy, 97.60.Lf

Hawking Radiation of a Non-stationary Kerr-Newman Black Hole: Spin-Rotation Coupling Effect

Hawking evaporation of Klein-Gordon and Dirac particles in a non-stationary Kerr-Newman space-time is investigated by using a method of generalized tortoise coordinate transformation. The location and the temperature of the event horizon of a non-stationary Kerr-Newman black hole are derived. It is shown that the temperature and the shape of the event horizon depend not only on the time but also on the angle. However, the Fermionic spectrum of Dirac particles displays a new spin-rotation coupling effect which is absent from that of Bosonic distribution of scalar particles. The character of this effect is its obvious dependence on different helicity states of particles spin-1/2. PACS numbers: 04.70.Dy, 97.60.Lf

No New Quantum Thermal Effect of Dirac Particles in a Charged Vaidya - de Sitter Black Hole

It is shown that Hawking radiation of Dirac particles does not exist for $P_1, Q_2$ components but for $P_2, Q_1$ components in a charged Vaidya - de Sitter black hole. Both the location and the temperature of the event horizon change with time. The thermal radiation spectrum of Dirac particles is the same as that of Klein-Gordon particles. Our result demonstrates that there is no new quantum effect in the thermal radiation of Dirac particles in any spherically symmetry black holes.

Massive Complex Scalar Field in a Kerr-Sen Black Hole Background: Exact Solution of Wave Equation and Hawking Radiation

The separated radial part of a massive complex scalar wave equation in the Kerr-Sen geometry is shown to satisfy the generalized spheroidal wave equation which is, in fact, a confluent Heun equation up to a multiplier. The Hawking evaporation of scalar particles in the Kerr-Sen black hole background is investigated by the Damour-Ruffini-Sannan's method. It is shown that quantum thermal effect of the Kerr-Sen black hole has the same characteras that of the Kerr-Newman black hole.

Extra Spin-Rotation Coupling Effect in a Radiating Kerr Space-time

Source-less wave equations are derived for massless scalar, neutrino and electromagnetic perturbations of a radiating Kerr space-time, and the Hawking radiation of massless particles with spin $s =0, 1/2$ and 1 in this geometry is investigated by using a method of the generalized tortoise coordinate transformation. An extra interaction between the spin of particles and the rotation of the hole displays in the thermal spectra of Hawking radiation of massless particles with spin $s = 1/2, 1$ in the evaporating Kerr space-time. The character of such effect is its obvious dependence on different helicity states of particles with higher spin.

Four Quantum Conservation Laws for Black Hole Stationary Equilibrium Radiation Processes

The classical first law of thermodynamics for a Kerr-Newman black hole (KNBH) is generalized to a law in quantum form on the event horizon. Then four quantum conservation laws on the KNBH equilibrium radiation process are derived. The Bekenstein-Hawking relation ${\cal{S}}={\cal{A}}/4$ is exactly established. It can be inferred that the classical entropy of black hole arises from the quantum entropy of field quanta or quasi-particles inside the hole.
