Two Nucleons on a Lattice

The two-nucleon sector is near an infrared fixed point of QCD and as a result the S-wave scattering lengths are unnaturally large compared to the effective ranges and shape parameters. It is usually assumed that a lattice QCD simulation of the two-nucleon sector will require a lattice that is much larger than the scattering lengths in order to extract quantitative information. In this paper we point out that this does not have to be the case: lattice QCD simulations on much smaller lattices will produce rigorous results for nuclear physics.

Exploring Hyperons and Hypernuclei with Lattice QCD

In this work we outline a program for lattice QCD that would provide a first step toward understanding the strong and weak interactions of strange baryons. The study of hypernuclear physics has provided a significant amount of information regarding the structure and weak decays of light nuclei containing one or two Lambda's, and Sigma's. From a theoretical standpoint, little is known about the hyperon-nucleon interaction, which is required input for systematic calculations of hypernuclear structure. Furthermore, the long-standing discrepancies in the P-wave amplitudes for nonleptonic hyperon decays remain to be understood, and their resolution is central to a better understanding of the weak decays of hypernuclei. We present a framework that utilizes Luscher's finite-volume techniques in lattice QCD to extract the scattering length and effective range for Lambda-N scattering in both QCD and partially-quenched QCD. The effective theory describing the nonleptonic decays of hyperons using isospin symmetry alone, appropriate for lattice calculations, is constructed.

The S-Wave Pion-Nucleon Scattering Lengths from Pionic Atoms using Effective Field Theory

The pion-deuteron scattering length is computed to next-to-next-to-leading order in baryon chiral perturbation theory. A modified power-counting is then formulated which properly accounts for infrared enhancements engendered by the large size of the deuteron, as compared to the pion Compton wavelength. We use the precise experimental value of the real part of the pion-deuteron scattering length determined from the decay of pionic deuterium, together with constraints on pion-nucleon scattering lengths from the decay of pionic hydrogen, to extract the isovector and isoscalar S-wave pion-nucleon scattering lengths, a^- and a^+, respectively. We find a^-=(0.0918 \pm 0.0013) M_π^{-1} and a^+=(-0.0034 \pm 0.0007) M_π^{-1}.

Deuteron Compton Scattering in Chiral Perturbation Theory

Compton scattering on the deuteron is studied in the framework of baryon chiral perturbation theory to third order in small momenta, for photon energies of order the pion mass. The scattering amplitude is a sum of one- and two-nucleon mechanisms with no undetermined parameters. Our results are in good agreement with the intermediate energy experimental data, and a comparison is made with the recent higher-energy data obtained at SAL.

Quark-Hadron Duality for Hybrid Mesons at Large-Nc

We investigate implications of quark-hadron duality for hybrid mesons in the large-Nc limit. A simple formalism is developed which implements duality for QCD two-point functions of currents of quark bilinears, with any number of gluons. We argue that the large-Nc meson masses share a common parameter, which is related to the QCD string tension. This parameter is fixed from correlators of conserved vector and axial-vector currents, and using lattice QCD determinations of the string tension. Our results predict towers of hybrid mesons which, within expected 1/Nc corrections, naturally accommodate the 1^(-+) experimental hybrid candidates.

Constraining Quark-Hadron Duality at Large-Nc

Quark-meson duality for two-point functions of vector and axial-vector QCD currents is investigated in the large-Nc approximation. We find that the joint constraints of duality and chiral symmetry imply degeneracy of excited vector and axial-vector mesons in the large-Nc limit. We compare model-independent constraints with expectations based on the Veneziano-Lovelace-Shapiro string model. Several models of duality are constructed, and phenomenological implications are discussed.

Towards a Perturbative Theory of Nuclear Forces

We show that an expansion of nuclear forces about the chiral limit is formally consistent and is equivalent to KSW power counting in the 1S0 channel and Weinberg power counting in the 3S1-3D1 coupled channels. Numerical evidence suggests that this expansion converges. The feasibility of making contact between nuclear physics and lattice-QCD simulations is discussed.

Singular Potentials and Limit Cycles

We show that a central $1/r^n$ singular potential (with $n\geq 2$) is renormalized by a one-parameter square-well counterterm; low-energy observables are made independent of the square-well width by adjusting the square-well strength. We find a closed form expression for the renormalization-group evolution of the square-well counterterm.

Compton Scattering on the Deuteron in Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory

Scheming in Dimensional Regularization

We consider the most general loop integral that appears in non-relativistic effective field theories with no light particles. The divergences of this integral are in correspondence with simple poles in the space of complex space-time dimensions. Integrals related to the original integral by subtraction of one or more poles in dimensions other than D=4 lead to nonminimal subtraction schemes. Subtraction of all poles in correspondence with ultraviolet divergences of the loop integral leads naturally to a regularization scheme which is precisely equivalent to cutoff regularization. We therefore recover cutoff regularization from dimensional regularization with a nonminimal subtraction scheme. We then discuss the power-counting for non-relativistic effective field theories which arises in these alternative schemes.

Regularization and renormalization in effective field theories of the nucleon-nucleon interaction

Some form of nonperturbative regularization is necessary if effective field theory treatments of the NN interaction are to yield finite answers. We discuss various regularization schemes used in the literature. Two of these methods involve formally iterating the divergent interaction and then regularizing and renormalizing the resultant amplitude. Either a (sharp or smooth) cutoff can be introduced, or dimensional regularization can be applied. We show that these two methods yield different results after renormalization. Furthermore, if a cutoff is used, the NN phase shift data cannot be reproduced if the cutoff is taken to infinity. We also argue that the assumptions which allow the use of dimensional regularization in perturbative EFT calculations are violated in this problem. Another possibility is to introduce a regulator into the potential before iteration and then keep the cutoff parameter finite. We argue that this does not lead to a systematically-improvable NN interaction.

The potential of effective field theory in NN scattering

We study an effective field theory of interacting nucleons at distances much greater than the pion's Compton wavelength. In this regime the NN potential is conjectured to be the sum of a delta function and its derivatives. The question we address is whether this sum can be consistently truncated at a given order in the derivative expansion, and systematically improved by going to higher orders. Regularizing the Lippmann-Schwinger equation using a cutoff we find that the cutoff can be taken to infinity only if the effective range is negative. A positive effective range---which occurs in nature---requires that the cutoff be kept finite and below the scale of the physics which has been integrated out, i.e. O(m_π). Comparison of cutoff schemes and dimensional regularization reveals that the physical scattering amplitude is sensitive to the choice of regulator. Moreover, we show that the presence of some regulator scale, a feature absent in dimensional regularization, is essential if the effective field theory of NN scattering is to be useful. We also show that one can define a procedure where finite cutoff dependence in the scattering amplitude is removed order by order in the effective potential. However, the characteristic momentum in the problem is given by the cutoff, and not by the external momentum. It follows that in the presence of a finite cutoff there is no small parameter in the effective potential, and consequently no systematic truncation of the derivative expansion can be made. We conclude that there is no effective field theory of NN scattering with nucleons alone.

The isoscalar S-wave pi-N scattering length a+ from pi-deuteron scattering

We consider constraints on the isoscalar S-wave pi-N scattering length a+ from pi-deuteron scattering, to third order in small momenta and pion masses in chiral perturbation theory. To this order, the pi-deuteron scattering length is determined by a+ together with three-body corrections that involve no undetermined parameters. We extract a novel value for a combination of dimension two low-energy constants which is in agreement with previous determinations.

Neutral pion photoproduction on deuterium in baryon chiral perturbation theory to order q^4

Threshold neutral pion photoproduction on the deuteron is studied in the framework of baryon chiral perturbation theory beyond next-to--leading order in the chiral expansion. To fourth order in small momenta, the amplitude is finite and a sum of two- and three-body interactions with no undetermined parameters. With accurate theoretical and experimental input from the single nucleon sector for the proton amplitude, we investigate the sensitivity of the threshold cross section to the elementary $γn \to π^0 n$ amplitude. A precise measurement of the threshold cross section for $γd \to π^0 d$ is called for.

Neutral Pion Photoproduction on Nuclei in Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory

Threshold neutral pion photoproduction on light nuclei is studied in the framework of baryon chiral perturbation theory. We obtain a general formula for the electric dipole amplitude in the special case of neutral pion photoproduction on a nucleus. To third order in small momenta, the amplitude is a sum of 2- and 3-body interactions with no undetermined parameters. With reasonable input from the single nucleon sector, our result for neutral pion photoproduction on the deuteron is in agreement with experiment.

Algebraic Content of Chiral Symmetry and the Strong Transitions of Heavy Mesons

The algebraic content of chiral symmetry constrains the strong interactions of mesons containing a single heavy quark. We show that the S-wave single-pion transition amplitudes of all heavy meson states are determined as a consequence of the participation of these states in reducible multiplets of unbroken $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$. We find this representation content by making use of phenomenologically inspired Lie-algebraic sum rules, together with QCD constraints on the heavy meson spectrum in the heavy quark limit. For example, the transition amplitude for the process $P^*\rightarrow Pπ$, where $P$ is a $D$ or a $B$ meson, is predicted to vanish. We also consider the Kaon system in light of our general conclusions for $I=\oneh$ states.

The Dilated Chiral Quark Model

It is argued that constituent quarks live in an effective theory that possesses an approximate conformal invariance. An effective lagrangian is constructed which in the large-$\nc$ approximation incorporates Regge asymptotic constraints. The resulting picture explains why linear-sigma models provide successful constituent quark descriptions, both at zero and finite temperature. Our analysis suggests an interesting relation between non-linearly realized conformal invariance and the completion of chiral multiplets in the broken symmetry phase.
