Quasi-Static Internal Magnetic Field Detected in the Pseudogap Phase of Bi$_{2+x}$Sr$_{2-x}$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ by $μ$SR

We report muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements of optimally-doped and overdoped Bi$_{2+x}$Sr$_{2-x}$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212) single crystals that reveal the presence of a weak temperature-dependent quasi-static internal magnetic field of electronic origin in the superconducting (SC) and pseudogap (PG) phases. In both samples the internal magnetic field persists up to 160~K, but muon diffusion prevents following the evolution of the field to higher temperatures. We consider the evidence from our measurments in support of PG order parameter candidates, namely, electronic loop currents and magnetoelectric quadrupoles.

Role of commensurate and incommensurate low-energy excitations in the paramagnetic to hidden-order transition of URu$_2$Si$_2$

We report low-energy inelastic neutron scattering data of the paramagnetic (PM) to hidden-order (HO) phase transition at $T_0=17.5\,{\rm K}$ in URu$_2$Si$_2$. While confirming previous results for the HO and PM phases, our data reveal a pronounced wavevector dependence of low-energy excitations across the phase transition. To analyze the energy scans we employ a damped harmonic oscillator model containing a fit parameter $1/Γ$ which is expected to diverge at a second-order phase transition. Counter to expectations the excitations at $\vec{Q}_1=(1.44,0,0)$ show an abrupt step-like suppression of $1/Γ$ below $T_0$, whereas excitations at $\vec{Q}_0=(1,0,0)$, associated with large-moment antiferromagnetism (LMAF) under pressure, show an enhancement and a pronounced peak of $1/Γ$ at $T_0$. Therefore, at the critical HO temperature $T_0$, LMAF fluctuations become nearly critical as well. This is the behavior expected of a super-vector order parameter with nearly degenerate components for the HO and LMAF leading to nearly isotropic fluctuations in the combined order-parameter space.

Unconventional Magnetic Ground State in Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

We report low temperature specific heat and muon spin relaxation/rotation ($μ$SR) measurements on both polycrystalline and single crystal samples of the pyrochlore magnet Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. This system is believed to possess a spin Hamiltonian supporting a Quantum Spin Ice (QSI) ground state and to display sample variation in its low temperature heat capacity. Our two samples exhibit extremes of this sample variation, yet our $μ$SR measurements indicate a similar disordered low temperature state down to 16 mK in both. We report little temperature dependence to the spin relaxation and no evidence for ferromagnetic order, in contrast to recent reports by Chang \emph{et al.} (Nat. Comm. {\bf 3}, 992 (2012)). Transverse field (TF) $μ$SR measurements show changes in the temperature dependence of the muon Knight shift which coincide with heat capacity anomalies. We are therefore led to propose that Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ enters a hidden order ground state below $T_c\sim265$ mK where the nature of the ordered state is unknown but distinct from simple long range order.

Coupled magnetic and ferroelectric excitations in PbFe_{1/2}Nb_{1/2}O_{3}

A neutron scattering investigation of the magnetoelectric coupling in PbFe_{1/2}Nb_{1/2}O_{3} (PFN) has been undertaken. Ferroelectric order occurs below 400 K, as evidenced by the softening with temperature and subsequent recovery of the zone center transverse optic phonon mode energy (\hbar Ω_{0}). Over the same temperature range, magnetic correlations become resolution limited on a terahertz energy scale. In contrast to the behavior of nonmagnetic disordered ferroelectrics (namely Pb(Mg,Zn)_{1/3}Nb_{2/3}O_{3}), we report the observation of a strong deviation from linearity in the temperature dependence of (\hbar Ω_{0})^{2}. This deviation is compensated by a corresponding change in the energy scale of the magnetic excitations, as probed through the first moment of the inelastic response. The coupling between the short-range ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic correlations is consistent with calculations showing that the ferroelectricity is driven by the displacement of the body centered iron site, illustrating the multiferroic nature of magnetic lead based relaxors in the dynamical regime.

New Diluted Ferromagnetic Semiconductor isostructural to 122 type iron pnictide superconductor with TC up to 180 K

Diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) have received much attention due to its potential applications to spintronics devices. A prototypical system (Ga,Mn)As has been widely studied since 1990s. The simultaneous spin and charge doping via hetero-valence (Ga3+,Mn2+) substitution, however, resulted in severely limited solubility without availability of bulk specimens. Previously we synthesized a new diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor of bulk Li(Zn,Mn)As with Tc up to 50K, where isovalent (Zn,Mn) spin doping was separated from charge control via Li concentrations. Here we report the synthesis of a new diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ba1-xKx)(Zn1-yMny)2As2, isostructural to iron 122 system, where holes are doped via (Ba2+, K1+), while spins via (Zn2+,Mn2+) substitutions. Bulk samples with x=0.1-0.3 and y=0.05-0.15 exhibit ferromagnetic order with TC up to 180K, comparable to that of record high Tc for Ga(MnAs), significantly enhanced than Li(Zn,Mn)As. Moreover the (Ba,K)(Zn,Mn)2As2 shares the same 122 crystal structure with semiconducting BaZn2As2, antiferromagnetic BaMn2As2, and superconducting (Ba,K)Fe2As2, which makes them promising to the development of multilayer functional devices.

First order metamagnetic transition in Ho2Ti2O7 observed by vibrating coil magnetometry at milli-Kelvin temperatures

We report vibrating coil magnetometry of the spin ice system Ho2Ti2O7 down to ~0.04 K for magnetic fields up to 5 T applied parallel to the [111] axis. History dependent behavior emerges below T*_0 ~ 0.6 K near zero magnetic field, in common with other spin ice compounds. In large magnetic fields we observe a magnetization plateau followed by a hysteretic metamagnetic transition. The temperature dependence of the coercive fields as well as the susceptibility calculated from the magnetization identify the metamagnetic transition as a line of first order transitions terminating in a critical endpoint at T*_m ~ 0.37 K, B*_m ~ 1.5 T. The metamagnetic transition in Ho2Ti2O7 is strongly reminiscent of that observed in Dy2Ti2O7, suggestive of a general feature of the spin ices.

Vibrating-coil magnetometry of the spin liquid properties of Tb2Ti2O7

We have explored the spin liquid state in Tb2Ti2O7 with vibrating coil magnetometry down to 0.04 K under magnetic fields up to 5 T. We observe magnetic history dependence below $T < 0.2$K reminiscent of the classical spin ice systems Ho2Ti2O7 and Dy2Ti2O7. The magnetic phase diagram inferred from the magnetization is essentially isotropic, without evidence of magnetization plateaux as anticipated for so-called quantum spin ice, predicted theoretically for [111] when quantum fluctuations renormalize the interactions. Instead, the magnetization for $T \ll T*$ agrees semi-quantitatively with the predictions of "all-in/all-out" (AIAO) antiferromagnetism. Taken together this suggests that the spin liquid state in Tb2Ti2O7 is akin to an incipient AIAO-antiferromagnet.

Spin Ice: Magnetic Excitations without Monopole Signatures using Muon Spin Rotation

Theory predicts the low-temperature magnetic excitations in spin ices consist of deconfined magnetic charges, or monopoles. A recent transverse-field (TF) muon spin rotation (muSR) experiment [S T Bramwell et al, Nature 461, 956 (2009)] reports results claiming to be consistent with the temperature and magnetic field dependence anticipated for monopole nucleation - the so-called second Wien effect. We demonstrate via a new series of muSR experiments in Dy_2Ti_2O_7 that such an effect is not observable in a TF muSR experiment. Rather, as found in many highly frustrated magnetic materials, we observe spin fluctuations which become temperature independent at low temperatures, behavior which dominates over any possible signature of thermally nucleated monopole excitations.

Study of the ground state properties of $LiHo_xY_{1-x}F_4$ using $μ$SR

$LiHo_xY_{1-x}F_4$ is an insulating system where the magnetic Ho$^{3+}$ ions have an Ising character, and interact mainly through magnetic dipolar fields. We used the muon spin relaxation technique to study the nature of the ground state for samples with x=0.25, 0.12, 0.08, 0.045 and 0.018. In contrast with some previous works, we have not found any signature of canonical spin glass behavior down to $\approx$15mK. Instead, below $\approx$300mK we observed dynamic magnetism characterized by a single correlation time with a temperature independent fluctuation rate. We observed that this low temperature fluctuation rate increases with x up to 0.08, above which it levels off. The 300mK energy scale corresponds to the Ho3+ hyperfine interaction strength, suggesting that the hyperfine interaction may be intimately involved with the spin dynamics in this system.

Revisiting Static and Dynamic Spin Ice Correlations in Ho2Ti2O7

Elastic and inelastic neutron scattering studies have been carried out on the pyrochlore magnet Ho2Ti2O7. Measurements in zero applied magnetic field show that the disordered spin ice ground state of Ho2Ti2O7 is characterized by a pattern of rectangular diffuse elastic scattering within the [HHL] plane of reciprocal space, which closely resembles the zone boundary scattering seen in its sister compound Dy2Ti2O7. Well-defined peaks in the zone boundary scattering develop only within the spin ice ground state below ~ 2 K. In contrast, the overall diffuse scattering pattern evolves on a much higher temperature scale of ~ 17 K. The diffuse scattering at small wavevectors below [001] is found to vanish on going to Q=0, an explicit signature of expectations for dipolar spin ice. Very high energy-resolution inelastic measurements reveal that the spin ice ground state below ~ 2 K is also characterized by a transition from dynamic to static spin correlations on the time scale of 10^{-9} seconds. Measurements in a magnetic field applied along the [1${\bar1}$0] direction in zero-field cooled conditions show that the system can be broken up into orthogonal sets of polarized alpha chains along [1${\bar1}$0] and quasi-one-dimensional beta chains along [110]. Three dimensional correlations between beta chains are shown to be very sensitive to the precise alignment of the [1${\bar1}$0] externally applied magnetic field.

Incommensurate Spin Ordering and Fluctuations in underdoped La_{2-x}Ba_{x}CuO_{4}

Using neutron scattering techniques, we have studied incommensurate spin ordering as well as low energy spin dynamics in single crystal underdoped \LBCO with x$\sim$0.095 and 0.08; high temperature superconductors with T$_C \sim$ 27 K and 29 K respectively. Static two dimensional incommensurate magnetic order appears below T$_N$=39.5 $\pm$ 0.3 K in \LBCO (x=0.095) and a similar temperature for x=0.08 within the low temperature tetragonal phase. The spin order is unaffected by either the onset of superconductivity or the application of magnetic fields of up to 7 Tesla applied along the c-axis in the x=0.095 sample. Such magnetic field {\it independent} behaviour is in marked contrast with the field induced enhancement of the staggered magnetisation observed in the related \LSCO system, indicating this phenomenon is not a universal property of cuprate superconductors. Surprisingly, we find that incommensurability $δ$ is only weakly dependent on doping relative to \LSCO. Dispersive excitations in \LBCO (x=0.095) at the same incommensurate wavevector persist up to at least 60 K. The dynamical spin susceptibility of the low energy spin excitations saturates below \tc, in a similar manner to that seen in the superconducting state of La$_2$CuO$_{4+y}$.

Diagonal and Collinear Incommensurate Spin Structures in underdoped La$_{2-x}$Ba$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$

We have studied incommensurate spin ordering in single crystal underdoped La_{2-x}Ba_{x}CuO_{4} with x~0.08, 0.05 and 0.025 using neutron scattering techniques. Static incommensurate magnetic order is observed in the La_{2-x}Ba_{x}CuO_{4} (x=0.05 and 0.025) compounds with ordering wavevectors which are rotated by 45 degree about the commensurate (0.5,0.5,0) position, with respect to that in the superconducting x=0.08 material. These spin modulations are one dimensional in the x=0.05 and 0.025 samples, with ordering wavevectors lying along the orthorhombic b* direction. Such a rotation in the orientation of the static spin ordering as a function of increasing Ba doping, from diagonal to collinear, is roughly coincident with the transition from an insulating to a superconducting ground state and is similar to that observed in the related La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} system. This phenomenon is therefore a generic property of underdoped La-214 cuprates.

High resolution X-ray scattering studies of structural phase transitions in underdoped La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$

We have studied structural phase transitions in high quality underdoped La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ single crystals using high resolution x-ray scattering techniques. Critical properties associated with the continuous High Temperature Tetragonal (HTT, $I4/mmm$) to Middle Temperature Orthorhombic (MTO, $Cmca$) phase transition were investigated in single crystal samples with x=0.125, 0.095, and 0.08 and we find that all behavior is consistent with three dimensional XY criticality, as expected from theory. Power law behavior in the orthorhombic strain, 2(a-b)/(a+b), is observed over a remarkably wide temperature range, spanning most of the MTO regime in the phase diagram. Low temperature measurements investigating the Low Temperature Tetragonal (LTT, $P4_{2}/ncm$) phase, below the strongly discontinuous MTO$\to$LTT phase transition, in x=0.125 and x=0.095 samples show that the LTT phase is characterized by relatively broad Bragg scattering, compared with that observed at related wavevectors in the HTT phase. This shows that the LTT phase is either an admixture of tetragonal and orthorhombic phases, or that it is orthorhombic with very small orthorhombic strain, consistent with the ``less orthorhombic" low temperature structure previously reported in mixed La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x-y}$Ba$_y$CuO$_4$ single crystals. We compare the complex temperature-composition phase diagram for the location of structural and superconducting phase transitions in underdoped La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ and find good agreement with results obtained on polycrystalline samples.

Phase separation and suppression of critical dynamics at quantum transitions of itinerant magnets: MnSi and (Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$)RuO$_{3}$

Quantum phase transitions (QPTs) have been studied extensively in correlated electron systems. Characterization of magnetism at QPTs has, however, been limited by the volume-integrated feature of neutron and magnetization measurements and by pressure uncertainties in NMR studies using powderized specimens. Overcoming these limitations, we performed muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements which have a unique sensitivity to volume fractions of magnetically ordered and paramagnetic regions, and studied QPTs from itinerant heli/ferro magnet to paramagnet in MnSi (single-crystal; varying pressure) and (Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$)RuO$_{3}$ (ceramic specimens; varying $x$). Our results provide the first clear evidence that both cases are associated with spontaneous phase separation and suppression of dynamic critical behavior, revealed a slow but dynamic character of the ``partial order'' diffuse spin correlations in MnSi above the critical pressure, and, combined with other known results in heavy-fermion and cuprate systems, suggest a possibility that a majority of QPTs involve first-order transitions and/or phase separation.

In-Gap Spin Excitations and Finite Triplet Lifetimes in the Dilute Singlet Ground State System SrCu(2-x)Mgx(BO3)2

High resolution neutron scattering measurements on a single crystal of SrCu(2-x)Mgx(BO3)2 with x=0.05 reveal the presence of new spin excitations within the gap of this quasi-two dimensional, singlet ground state system. Application of a magnetic field induces Zeeman-split states associated with S=1/2 unpaired spins which are antiferromagnetically correlated with the bulk singlet. Substantial broadening of both the one and two-triplet excitations in the doped single crystal is observed, as compared with pure SrCu2(BO3)2. Theoretical calculations using a variational algorithm and a single quenched magnetic vacancy on an infinite lattice are shown to qualitatively account for these effects.

Field Induced Order and Spin Waves in the Pyrochlore Antiferromagnet Tb2Ti2O7

High resolution time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements on Tb2Ti2O7 reveal a rich low temperature phase diagram in the presence of a magnetic field applied along [110]. In zero field at T=0.4 K, terbium titanate is a highly correlated cooperative paramagnet with disordered spins residing on a pyrochlore lattice of corner-sharing tetrahedra. Application of a small field condenses much of the magnetic diffuse scattering, characteristic of the disordered spins, into a new Bragg peak characteristic of a polarized paramagnet. At higher fields, a magnetically ordered phase is induced, which supports spin wave excitations indicative of continuous, rather than Ising-like spin degrees of freedom.

Local Magnetic Susceptibility of the Positive Muon in the Quasi 1D S=1/2 Antiferromagnet dichlorobis (pyridine) copper (II)

We report muon spin rotation measurements of the local magnetic susceptibility around a positive muon in the paramagnetic state of the quasi one-dimensional spin 1/2 antiferromagnet dichlorobis (pyridine) copper (II). Signals from three distinct sites are resolved and have a temperature dependent frequency shift which is significantly different than the magnetic susceptibility. This difference is attributed to a muon induced perturbation of the spin 1/2 chain. The obtained frequency shifts are compared with Transfer Matrix DMRG numerical simulations.
