Suppression of the horizon effect in pairing correlation functions of $t$-$J$ chains after a quantum quench

We investigate the time evolution of density, spin, and pairing correlation functions in one-dimensional $t$-$J$ models following a quantum quench using the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group (tDMRG). While density and spin correlation functions show the typical light-cone behavior over a wide range of parameters, in pairing correlation functions it is strongly suppressed. This is supported by time-dependent BCS theory, where the light-cone in the pairing correlation functions is found to be at least two orders of magnitude weaker than in the density correlator. These findings indicate that in global quantum quenches not all observables are affected by the excitations equally.

Anisotropy crossover in the frustrated Hubbard model on four-chain cylinders

Motivated by dimensional crossover in layered organic $κ$ salts, we determine the phase diagram of a system of four periodically coupled Hubbard chains with frustration at half filling as a function of the interchain hopping ${t_{\perp}/t}$ and interaction strength ${U/t}$ at a fixed ratio of frustration and interchain hopping ${t'/t_{\perp}=-0.5}$. We cover the range from the one-dimensional limit of uncoupled chains (${t_{\perp}/t=0.0}$) to the isotropic model (${t_{\perp}/t=1.0}$). For strong ${U/t}$, we find an antiferromagnetic insulator; in the weak-to-moderate-interaction regime, the phase diagram features quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnetic behavior, an incommensurate spin-density wave, and a metallic phase as ${t_{\perp}/t}$ is increased. We characterize the phases through their magnetic ordering, dielectric response, and dominant static correlations. Our analysis is based primarily on a variant of the density-matrix renormalization-group algorithm based on an efficient hybrid-real-momentum-space formulation, in which we can treat relatively large lattices albeit of a limited width. This is complemented by a variational cluster approximation study with a cluster geometry corresponding to the cylindrical lattice allowing us to directly compare the two methods for this geometry. As an outlook, we make contact with work studying dimensional crossover in the full two-dimensional system.

Breakdown of quasilocality in long-range quantum lattice models

We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of correlations in quantum lattice models in the presence of long-range interactions decaying asymptotically as a power law. For exponents larger than the lattice dimensionality, a Lieb-Robinson-type bound effectively restricts the spreading of correlations to a causal region, but allows supersonic propagation. We show that this decay is not only sufficient but also necessary. Using tools of quantum metrology, for any exponents smaller than the lattice dimension, we construct Hamiltonians giving rise to quantum channels with capacities not restricted to a causal region. An analytical analysis of long-range Ising models illustrates the disappearance of the causal region and the creation of correlations becoming distance-independent. Numerical results obtained using matrix product state methods for the XXZ spin chain reveal the presence of a sound cone for large exponents, and supersonic propagation for small ones. In all models we analyzed the fast spreading of correlations follows a power law, but not the exponential increase of the long-range Lieb-Robinson bound.

Magnetic excitations in the S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic chain compound BaCu2V2O8 at zero and finite temperature

Unlike most quantum systems which rapidly become incoherent as temperature is raised, strong correlations persist at elevated temperatures in $S=1/2$ dimer magnets, as revealed by the unusual asymmetric lineshape of their excitations at finite temperatures. Here we quantitatively explore and parameterize the strongly correlated magnetic excitations at finite temperatures using the high resolution inelastic neutron scattering on the model compound BaCu$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ which we show to be an alternating antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic spin$-1/2$ chain. Comparison to state of the art computational techniques shows excellent agreement over a wide temperature range. Our findings hence demonstrate the possibility to quantitatively predict coherent behavior at elevated temperatures in quantum magnets.

Exotic magnetisation plateaus in a quasi-2D Shastry-Sutherland model

We find unconventional Mott insulators in a quasi-2D version of the Shastry-Sutherland model in a magnetic field. In our realization on a 4-leg tube geometry, these are stabilized by correlated hopping of localized magnetic excitations. Using perturbative continuous unitary transformations (pCUTs, plus classical approximation or exact diagonalization) and the density matrix renormalisation group method (DMRG), we identify prominent magnetization plateaus at magnetizations M=1/8, M=3/16, M=1/4, and M=1/2. While the plateau at M=1/4 can be understood in a semi-classical fashion in terms of diagonal stripes, the plateau at M=1/8 displays highly entangled wheels in the transverse direction of the tube. Finally, the M=3/16 plateau is most likely to be viewed as a classical 1/8 structure on which additional triplets are fully delocalized around the tube. The classical approximation of the effective model fails to describe all these plateau structures which benefit from correlated hopping. We relate our findings to the full 2D system, which is the underlying model for the frustrated quantum magnet SrCu(BO_3)_2.

Quench Dynamics in a Model with Tuneable Integrability Breaking

We consider quantum quenches in an integrable quantum chain with tuneable-integrability-breaking interactions. In the case where these interactions are weak, we demonstrate that at intermediate times after the quench local observables relax to a prethermalized regime, which can be described by a density matrix that can be viewed as a deformation of a generalized Gibbs ensemble. We present explicit expressions for the approximately conserved charges characterizing this ensemble. We do not find evidence for a crossover from the prethermalized to a thermalized regime on the time scales accessible to us. Increasing the integrability-breaking interactions leads to a behaviour that is compatible with eventual thermalization.

Magnetization of SrCu2(BO3)2 in ultrahigh magnetic fields up to 118 T

The magnetization process of the orthogonal-dimer antiferromagnet SrCu2(BO3)2 is investigated in high magnetic fields of up to 118 T. A 1/2 plateau is clearly observed in the field range 84 to 108 T in addition to 1/8, 1/4 and 1/3 plateaux at lower fields. Using a combination of state-of-the-art numerical simulations, the main features of the high-field magnetization, a 1/2 plateau of width 24 T, a 1/3 plateau of width 34 T, and no 2/5 plateau, are shown to agree quantitatively with the Shastry-Sutherland model if the ratio of inter- to intra-dimer exchange interactions J'/J=0.63. It is further predicted that the intermediate phase between the 1/3 and 1/2 plateau is not uniform but consists of a 1/3 supersolid followed by a 2/5 supersolid and possibly a domain-wall phase, with a reentrance into the 1/3 supersolid above the 1/2 plateau.

Field-Induced Gap in a Quantum Spin-1/2 Chain in a Strong Magnetic Field

Magnetic excitations in copper pyrimidine dinitrate, a spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic chain with alternating $g$-tensor and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions that exhibits a field-induced spin gap, are probed by means of pulsed-field electron spin resonance spectroscopy. In particular, we report on a minimum of the gap in the vicinity of the saturation field $H_{sat}=48.5$ T associated with a transition from the sine-Gordon region (with soliton-breather elementary excitations) to a spin-polarized state (with magnon excitations). This interpretation is fully confirmed by the quantitative agreement over the entire field range of the experimental data with the DMRG investigation of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with a staggered transverse field.

Frustration induced plateaux in S>=1/2 Heisenberg spin ladders

We study the T = 0 magnetization of frustrated two-leg spin ladders with arbitrary value of the spin S. In the strong rung limit, we use degenerate perturbation theory to prove that frustration leads to magnetization plateaux at fractional values of the magnetization for all spins S, and to determine the critical ratios of parallel to diagonal inter-rung couplings for the appearance of these plateaux. These ratios depend both on the plateau and on the spin. To confirm these results, and to investigate the properties of these ladders away from the strong coupling limit, we have performed extensive density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations for S <= 2. For large enough inter-rung couplings, all plateaux simply disappear, leading to a magnetization curve typical of integer-spin chains in a magnetic field. The intermediate region turns out to be surprisingly rich however, with, upon increasing the inter-rung couplings, the development of magnetization jumps and, in some cases, the appearance of one or more phase transitions inside a given plateau.

Quantum distillation: dynamical generation of low-entropy states of strongly correlated fermions in an optical lattice

Correlations between particles can lead to subtle and sometimes counterintuitive phenomena. We analyze one such case, occurring during the sudden expansion of fermions in a lattice when the initial state has a strong admixture of double occupancies. We promote the notion of quantum distillation: during the expansion, and in the presence of strongly repulsive interactions, doublons group together, forming a nearly ideal band insulator, which is metastable with a low entropy. We propose that this effect could be used for cooling purposes in experiments with two-component Fermi gases.

Torque anomalies at magnetization plateaux in quantum magnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions

We investigate the effect of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions on torque measurements of quantum magnets with magnetization plateaux in the context of a frustrated spin-1/2 ladder. Using extensive DMRG simulations, we show that the DM contribution to the torque is peaked at the critical fields, and that the total torque is non-monotonous if the DM interaction is large enough compared to the g-tensor anisotropy. More remarkably, if the DM vectors point in a principal direction of the g-tensor, torque measurements close to this direction will show well defined peaks even for small DM interaction, leading to a very sensitive way to detect the critical fields. We propose to test this effect in the two-dimensional plateau system SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$.

The ALPS project release 1.3: open source software for strongly correlated systems

We present release 1.3 of the ALPS (Algorithms and Libraries for Physics Simulations) project, an international open source software project to develop libraries and application programs for the simulation of strongly correlated quantum lattice models such as quantum magnets, lattice bosons, and strongly correlated fermion systems. Development is centered on common XML and binary data formats, on libraries to simplify and speed up code development, and on full-featured simulation programs. The programs enable non-experts to start carrying out numerical simulations by providing basic implementations of the important algorithms for quantum lattice models: classical and quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) using non-local updates, extended ensemble simulations, exact and full diagonalization (ED), as well as the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). Changes in the new release include a DMRG program for interacting models, support for translation symmetries in the diagonalization programs, the ability to define custom measurement operators, and support for inhomogeneous systems, such as lattice models with traps. The software is available from our web server at http://alps.comp-phys.org/ .

Strongly correlated fermions after a quantum quench

Using the adaptive time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group method, we study the time evolution of strongly correlated spinless fermions on a one-dimensional lattice after a sudden change of the interaction strength. For certain parameter values, two different initial states (e.g., metallic and insulating), lead to observables which become indistinguishable after relaxation. We find that the resulting quasi-stationary state is non-thermal. This result holds for both integrable and non-integrable variants of the system.

Uniform and staggered magnetizations induced by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in isolated and coupled spin 1/2 dimers in a magnetic field

We investigate the interplay of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions and an external field in spin 1/2 dimers. For isolated dimers and at low field, we derive simple expressions for the staggered and uniform magnetizations which show that the orientation of the uniform magnetization can deviate significantly from that of the external field. In fact, in the limit where the ${\bf D}$ vector of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is parallel to the external field, the uniform magnetization actually becomes {\it perpendicular} to the field. For larger fields, we show that the staggered magnetization of an isolated dimer has a maximum close to one-half the polarization, with a large maximal value of $0.35 gμ_B$ in the limit of very small Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We investigate the effect of inter-dimer coupling in the context of ladders with Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) calculations and show that, as long as the values of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and of the exchange interaction are compatible with respect to the development of a staggered magnetization, the simple picture that emerges for isolated dimers is also valid for weakly coupled dimers with minor modifications. The results are compared with torque measurements on Cu$_{2}$(C$_{5}$H$_{12}$N$_{2}$)$_{2}$Cl$_{4}$.

Coherent matter waves emerging from Mott-insulators

We study the formation of (quasi-)coherent matter waves emerging from a Mott insulator for strongly interacting bosons on a one-dimensional lattice. It has been shown previously that a quasi-condensate emerges at momentum k=π/2a, where a is the lattice constant, in the limit of infinitely strong repulsion (hard-core bosons). Here we show that this phenomenon persists for all values of the repulsive interaction that lead to a Mott insulator at a commensurate filling. The non-equilibrium dynamics of hard-core bosons is treated exactly by means of a Jordan-Wigner transformation, and the generic case is studied using a time-dependent density matrix renormalization group technique. Different methods for controlling the emerging matter wave are discussed.

Comment on "Novel Superfluidity in a Trapped Gas of Fermi Atoms with Repulsive Interaction Loaded on an Optical Lattice"

In a recent letter Machida et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 200402 (2004)] concluded that in a trapped gas of fermions with repulsive interactions a superfluid phase appears around the Mott-insulator at the center of the trap. They base their conclusion on a negative binding energy, and a large weight for a singlet formed by particles located at opposite sides of the Mott-insulator. We show here that the observed effects are not related to superfluidity.

Quantum critical behavior of the one-dimensional ionic Hubbard model

We study the zero-temperature phase diagram of the half-filled one-dimensional ionic Hubbard model. This model is governed by the interplay of the on-site Coulomb repulsion and an alternating one-particle potential. Various many-body energy gaps, the charge-density-wave and bond-order parameters, the electric as well as the bond-order susceptibilities, and the density-density correlation function are calculated using the density-matrix renormalization group method. In order to obtain a comprehensive picture, we investigate systems with open as well as periodic boundary conditions and study the physical properties in different sectors of the phase diagram. A careful finite-size scaling analysis leads to results which give strong evidence in favor of a scenario with two quantum critical points and an intermediate spontaneously dimerized phase. Our results indicate that the phase transitions are continuous. Using a scaling ansatz we are able to read off critical exponents at the first critical point. In contrast to a bosonization approach, we do not find Ising critical exponents. We show that the low-energy physics of the strong coupling phase can only partly be understood in terms of the strong coupling behavior of the ordinary Hubbard model.
