Triplet Pairing in pure neutron matter

We study the zero temperature BCS gaps for the triplet channel in pure neutron matter using Similarity Renormalization Group (SRG) evolved interactions. We use the dependence of the results on the SRG resolution scale, as a tool to analyze medium and many-body corrections. In particular, we study the effects of including the three-body interactions at leading order, which appear at N2LO in the Chiral EFT, as well as that of the first-order self-energy corrections on the zero temperature gap. In addition we also extract the transition temperature as a function of densities and verify the BCS scaling of the zero temperature gaps to the transition temperature. We observe that the self-energy effects are very crucial in order to reduce the SRG resolution scale dependence of the results, while the three-body effects at the leading order do not change the two-body resolution scale dependence. On the other hand, the results depend strongly on the three-body cut-off, emphasizing the importance of the missing higher-order three-body effects. We also observe that self-energy effects reduce the overall gap as well as shift the gap closure to lower densities.

Higgs bundles for real groups and the Hitchin-Kostant-Rallis section

We consider the moduli space of polystable $L$-twisted $G$-Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface $X$, where $G$ is a real reductive Lie group, and $L$ is a holomorphic line bundle over $X$. Evaluating the Higgs field at a basis of the ring of polynomial invariants of the isotropy representation, one defines the Hitchin map. This is a map to an affine space, whose dimension is determined by $L$ and the degrees of the polynomials in the basis. Building up on the work of Kostant-Rallis and Hitchin, in this paper, as a first step in the study of the Hitchin map, we construct a section of this map. This generalizes the section constructed by Hitchin when $L$ is the canonical line bundle of $X$ and $G$ is complex. In this case the image of the section is related to the Hitchin-Teichmüller components of the moduli space of representations of the fundamental group of $X$ in $G_{\mathrm{Split}}$, a split real form of $G$. In fact, our construction is very natural in that we can start with the moduli space for $G_{\mathrm{Split}}$, instead of $G$, and construct the section for the Hitchin map for $G_{\mathrm{Split}}$ directly. The construction involves the notion of maximal split subgroup of a real reductive Lie group.

BEC-BCS Crossover in Neutron Matter with Renormalization Group based Effective Interactions

We study pure neutron matter in the BEC-BCS crossover regime using renormalization group based low-momentum interactions within the Nozières-Schmitt-Rink framework. This is an attempt to go beyond the mean field description for low-density matter. We work in the basis of so-called Weinberg eigenvectors where the operator $G_0V$ is diagonal, which proves to be an excellent choice that allows one to use non-local interactions in a very convenient way. We study the importance of correlations as a function of density. We notice that there is a significant reduction of the BCS critical temperature at low-densities as the neutron matter approaches the unitary limit.

Local Projections of Low-Momentum Potentials

Nuclear interactions evolved via renormalization group methods to lower resolution become increasingly non-local (off-diagonal in coordinate space) as they are softened. This inhibits both the development of intuition about the interactions and their use with some methods for solving the quantum many-body problem. By applying "local projections", a softened interaction can be reduced to a local effective interaction plus a non-local residual interaction. At the two-body level, a local projection after similarity renormalization group (SRG) evolution manifests the elimination of short-range repulsive cores and the flow toward universal low-momentum interactions. The SRG residual interaction is found to be relatively weak at low energy, which motivates a perturbative treatment.

Theory of unitarity bounds and low energy form factors

We present a general formalism for deriving bounds on the shape parameters of the weak and electromagnetic form factors using as input correlators calculated from perturbative QCD, and exploiting analyticity and unitarity. The values resulting from the symmetries of QCD at low energies or from lattice calculations at special points inside the analyticity domain can beincluded in an exact way. We write down the general solution of the corresponding Meiman problem for an arbitrary number of interior constraints and the integral equations that allow one to include the phase of the form factor along a part of the unitarity cut. A formalism that includes the phase and some information on the modulus along a part of the cut is also given. For illustration we present constraints on the slope and curvature of the K_l3 scalar form factor and discuss our findings in some detail. The techniques are useful for checking the consistency of various inputs and for controlling the parameterizations of the form factors entering precision predictions in flavor physics.

Stringent constraints on the scalar K pi form factor from analyticity, unitarity and low-energy theorems

We investigate the scalar K pi form factor at low energies by the method of unitarity bounds adapted so as to include information on the phase and modulus along the elastic region of the unitarity cut. Using at input the values of the form factor at t=0 and the Callan-Treiman point, we obtain stringent constraints on the slope and curvature parameters of the Taylor expansion at the origin. Also, we predict a quite narrow range for the higher order ChPT corrections at the second Callan-Treiman point.

Supersolid and solitonic phases in one-dimensional Extended Bose-Hubbard model

We report our findings on quantum phase transitions in cold bosonic atoms in a one dimensional optical lattice using the finite size density matrix renormalization group method in the framework of the extended Bose-Hubbard model. We consider wide ranges of values for the filling factors and the nearest neighbor interactions. At commensurate fillings, we obtain two different types of charge density wave phases and a Mott insulator phase. However, departure from commensurate fillings yield the exotic supersolid phase where both the crystalline and the superfluid orders coexist. In addition, we obtain signatures for solitary waves and also superfluidity.

New constraints on the Pion EM form factor using Pi'(-Q^2)

We study the constraints arising on the expansion parameters c and d of the Pion electromagnetic form factor from the inclusion of pure space-like data and the phase of time-like data along with one space-like datum, using as input the first derivative of the QCD polarization amplitude Pi'(-Q^2). These constraints when combined with other analyses, provide a valuable check on a determination of c due to Guo et al. and on our previous work where pionic contribution to the (g-2) of the muon was used as the input. This work further illustrates the power of analyticity techniques in form factor analysis.

Constraining the low energy Pion electromagnetic form factor with space-like and phase of time-like data

The Taylor coefficients c and d of the Pion EM form factor are constrained using analyticity, knowledge of the phase of the form factor in the time-like region, 4 m_pi^2 \le t \le \tin and its value at one space-like point, using as input the (g-2) of the muon. This is achieved using the technique of Lagrange multipliers, that gives a transparent expression for the corresponding bounds. We present a detailed study of the sensitivity of the bounds to the choice of time-like phase and errors present in the space-like data, taken from recent experiments. We find that our results constrain c stringently. We compare our results with those in literature and find agreement with the chiral perturbation theory results for $c$. We obtain d \sim O(10)GeV^{-6} when c is set to the chiral perturbation theory values.

Signatures of the superfluid to Mott insulator transition in cold bosonic atoms in a one dimensional optical lattice

We study the Bose-Hubbard model using the finite size density matrix renormalization group method. We obtain for the first time a complete phase diagram for a system in the presence of a harmonic trap and compare it with that of the homogeneous system. To realize the transition from the superfluid to the Mott insulator phase we investigate different experimental signatures of these phases in quantities such as momentum distribution, visibility, condensate fraction and the total number of bosons at a particular density. The relationships between the various experimental signatures and the phase diagram are highlighted.

Constraining the low energy pion electromagnetic form factor with space-like data

The pionic contribution to the g-2 of the muon involves a certain integral over the the modulus squared of F_π(t), the pion electromagnetic form factor. We extend techniques that use cut-plane analyticity properties of F_π(t) in order to account for present day estimates of the pionic contribution and experimental information at a finite number of points in the space-like region. Using data from several experiments over a large kinematic range for |t|, we find bounds on the expansion coefficients of F_π(t), sub-leading to the charge radius. The value of one of these coefficients in chiral perturbation theory respects these bounds. Furthermore, we present a sensitivity analysis to the inputs. A brief comparison with results in the literature that use observables other than the g-2 and timelike data is presented.

Weinberg Eigenvalues and Pairing with Low-Momentum Potentials

The nonperturbative nature of nucleon-nucleon interactions evolved to low momentum has recently been investigated in free space and at finite density using Weinberg eigenvalues as a diagnostic. This analysis is extended here to the in-medium eigenvalues near the Fermi surface to study pairing. For a fixed value of density and cutoff Lambda, the eigenvalues increase arbitrarily in magnitude close to the Fermi surface, signaling the pairing instability. When using normal-phase propagators, the Weinberg analysis with complex energies becomes a form of stability analysis and the pairing gap can be estimated from the largest attractive eigenvalue. With Nambu-Gorkov Green's functions, the largest attractive eigenvalue goes to unity close to the Fermi surface, indicating the presence of bound states (Cooper pairs), and the corresponding eigenvector leads to the self-consistent gap function.

Low-momentum interactions with smooth cutoffs

Nucleon-nucleon potentials evolved to low momentum, which show great promise in few- and many-body calculations, have generally been formulated with a sharp cutoff on relative momenta. However, a sharp cutoff has technical disadvantages and can cause convergence problems at the 10-100 keV level in the deuteron and triton. This motivates using smooth momentum-space regulators as an alternative. We generate low-momentum interactions with smooth cutoffs both through energy-independent renormalization group methods and using a multi-step process based on the Bloch-Horowitz approach. We find greatly improved convergence for calculations of the deuteron and triton binding energies in a harmonic oscillator basis compared to results with a sharp cutoff. Even a slight evolution of chiral effective field theory interactions to lower momenta is beneficial. The renormalization group preserves the long-range part of the interaction, and consequently the renormalization of long-range operators, such as the quadrupole moment, the radius and 1/r, is small. This demonstrates that low-energy observables in the deuteron are reproduced without short-range correlations in the wave function.

Convergence of the Born Series with Low-Momentum Interactions

The nonperturbative nature of nucleon-nucleon interactions as a function of a momentum cutoff is studied using Weinberg eigenvalues as a diagnostic. This investigation extends an earlier study of the perturbative convergence of the Born series to partial waves beyond the 3S1-3D1 channel and to positive energies. As the cutoff is lowered using renormalization-group or model-space techniques, the evolution of nonperturbative features at large cutoffs from strong short-range repulsion and the iterated tensor interaction are monitored via the complex Weinberg eigenvalues. When all eigenvalues lie within the unit circle, the expansion of the scattering amplitude in terms of the interaction is perturbative, with the magnitude of the largest eigenvalue setting the rate of convergence. Major decreases in the magnitudes of repulsive eigenvalues are observed as the Argonne v18, CD-Bonn or Nijmegen potentials are evolved to low momentum, even though two-body observables are unchanged. For chiral EFT potentials, running the cutoff lower tames the impact of the tensor force and of new nonperturbative features entering at N3LO. The efficacy of separable approximations to nuclear interactions derived from the Weinberg analysis is studied as a function of cutoff, and the connection to inverse scattering is demonstrated.

Hecke curves and Hitchin discriminant

Let $C$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g\geq 4$ over the complex numbers and ${\cal SU}^s_C(r,d)$ be the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank $r$ with a fixed determinant of degree $d$. In the projectivized cotangent space at a general point $E$ of ${\cal SU}^s_C(r,d)$, there exists a distinguished hypersurface ${\cal S}_E$ consisting of cotangent vectors with singular spectral curves. In the projectivized tangent space at $E$, there exists a distinguished subvariety ${\cal C}_E$ consisting of vectors tangent to Hecke curves in ${\cal SU}^s_C(r,d)$ through $E$. Our main result establishes that the hypersurface ${\cal S}_E$ and the variety ${\cal C}_E$ are dual to each other. As an application of this duality relation, we prove that any surjective morphism ${\cal SU}^s_C(r,d) \to {\cal SU}^s_{C'}(r,d)$, where $C'$ is another curve of genus $g$, is biregular. This confirms, for ${\cal SU}^s_C(r,d)$, the general expectation that a Fano variety of Picard number 1, excepting the projective space, has no non-trivial self-morphism and that morphisms between Fano varieties of Picard number 1 are rare. The duality relation also gives simple proofs of the non-abelian Torelli theorem and the result of Kouvidakis-Pantev on the automorphisms of ${\cal SU}^s_C(r,d)$.

On vector bundles destabilized by Frobenius pull-back

Let X be an irreducible smooth projective curve of genus at least two over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic p>0. In this paper we study the natural stratification, defined using the absolute Frobenius of X, on the moduli space of vector bundles on X of suitable rank. In characteristic two we provide a complete classification of rank two semi-stable vector bundles whose Frobenius pull-back is not semi-stable. We also obtain fairly good information about the strata of the Frobenius stratification, including the irreducibility and the dimension of each non-empty Frobenius stratum. In particular we show that the locus of Frobenius destabilized bundles has dimension 3g-4 in the moduli space of semi-stable bundles of rank two. We also construct stable bundles that are destabilized by Frobenius in the following situations: characteristic p=2 and rank four, (2) characteristic p=rank=3, (3) characteristic p=rank=5 and g at least three. We also explore (in any characteristic) the connection between Frobenius destabilized bundles and (pre)-opers, this approach allows us to reinterpret some of our results in terms of pre-opers and also allows us to construct Frobenius destablised bundles from certain pre-opers (or opers). The other result we obtain is (for characteristic two): we show that the Gunning bundle descends under Frobenius when genus g is even. If g is odd, then the Gunning bundle twisted by any odd degree line bundle also descends.

Twisted Higgs bundles and the fundamental group of compact Kähler manifolds

We study polystable Higgs bundles twisted by a line bundle over a compact Kähler manifold. These form a Tannakian category when the first and second Chern classes of the bundle are zero. In this paper we identify the corresponding Tannaka group in the case in which the line bundle is of finite order. This group is described in terms of the pro-reductive completion of the fundamental group of the manifold, and the character associated to the line bundle.
