Topological Levinson's theorem and corrections at thresholds: the full picture in a quasi-1D example

Various threshold effects are investigated on a discrete quasi-1D scattering system. In particular, one of these effects is to add corrections to Levinson's theorem. We explain how these corrections are due to the opening or to the closing of channels of scattering, and how these contributions can be computed as partial winding numbers on newly introduced operators. Embedded thresholds, thresholds associated with changes of spectral multiplicity, and doubly degenerate thresholds are exhibited and analyzed. Most of the investigations are of an analytical nature, but the final equalities rely on a C*-algebraic framework.

Topological Levinson's theorem in presence of embedded thresholds and discontinuities of the scattering matrix

A family of discrete Schroedinger operators is investigated through scattering theory. The continuous spectrum of these operators exhibit changes of multiplicity, and some of these operators possess resonances at thresholds. It is shown that the corresponding wave operators belong to an explicitly constructed C*-algebra, whose K-theory is carefully analysed. An index theorem is deduced from these investigations, which corresponds to a topological version of Levinson's theorem in presence of embedded thresholds, resonances, and changes of multiplicity of the scattering matrices. In the second half of the paper, very detailed computations for the simplest realisation of this family of operators are provided. In particular, a surface of resonances is exhibited, probably for the first time. For Levinson's theorem, it is shown that contributions due to resonances at the lowest value and at the highest value of the continuous spectrum play an essential role.

Levinson's theorem for two-dimensional scattering systems: it was a surprise, it is now topological!

We prove a general Levinson's theorem for Schr\"odinger operators in two dimensions with threshold obstructions at zero energy. Our results confirm and simplify earlier seminal results of Boll\'e, Gesztesy et al., while providing an explicit topological interpretation. We also derive explicit formulas for the wave operators, and so show that they are elements of a $C^*$-algebra introduced by Cordes. As a consequence of our approach, we provide an evaluation of the spectral shift function at zero in the presence of $p$-resonances.

Scattering theory and an index theorem on the radial part of SL(2,R)

We present the spectral and scattering theory of the Casimir operator acting on the radial part of SL(2,R). After a suitable decomposition, these investigations consist in studying a family of differential operators acting on the half-line. For these operators, explicit expressions can be found for the resolvent, for the spectral density, and for the Moeller wave operators, in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric function. An index theorem is also introduced and discussed. The resulting equality links various asymptotic behaviors of the hypergeometric function.

Agent-based model and data assimilation: Analysis of COVID-19 in Tokyo

In this paper we introduce an agent-based model together with a particle filter approach for studying the spread of COVID-19. Investigations are performed on the metropolis of Tokyo, but other cities, regions or countries could have been equally chosen. A novel method for evaluating the effective reproduction number is one of the main outcome of our approach. Other unknown parameters and unknown populations are also evaluated. Uncertain quantities, as for example the ratio of symptomatic / asymptomatic agents, are tested and discussed, and the stability of our computations is examined. Detailed explanations are provided for the model and for the assimilation process.

Decay estimates for unitary representations with applications to continuous- and discrete-time models

We present a new technique to obtain polynomial decay estimates for the matrix coefficients of unitary operators. Our approach, based on commutator methods, applies to nets of unitary operators, unitary representations of topological groups, and unitary operators given by the evolution group of a self-adjoint operator or by powers of a unitary operator. Our results are illustrated with a wide range of examples in quantum mechanics and dynamical systems, as for instance Schr\"odinger operators, Dirac operators, quantum waveguides, horocycle flows, adjacency matrices, Jacobi matrices, quantum walks or skew products.

Spectral and scattering theory for topological crystals perturbed by infinitely many new edges

In this paper we investigate the spectral and scattering theory for operators acting on topological crystals and on their perturbations. A special attention is paid to perturbations obtained by the addition of an infinite number of edges, and / or by the removal of a finite number of them, but perturbations of the underlying measures and perturbations by the addition of a multiplication operator are also considered. The description of the nature of the spectrum of the resulting operators, and the existence and completeness of the wave operators are standard outcomes for these investigations.

On radial Schroedinger operators with a Coulomb potential: General boundary conditions

This paper presents the spectral analysis of 1-dimensional Schroedinger operator on the half-line whose potential is a linear combination of the Coulomb term 1/r and the centrifugal term 1/r^2. The coupling constants are allowed to be complex, and all possible boundary conditions at 0 are considered. The resulting closed operators are organized in three holomorphic families. These operators are closely related to the Whittaker equation. Solutions of this equation are thoroughly studied in a large appendix to this paper. Various special cases of this equation are analyzed, namely the degenerate, the Laguerre and the doubly degenerate cases. A new solution to the Whittaker equation in the doubly degenerate case is also introduced.

On some integral operators appearing in scattering theory, and their resolutions

We discuss a few integral operators and provide expressions for them in terms of smooth functions of some natural self-adjoint operators. These operators appear in the context of scattering theory, but are independent of any perturbation theory. The Hilbert transform, the Hankel transform, and the finite interval Hilbert transform are among the operators considered.

Topological Levinson's theorem for inverse square potentials: complex, infinite, but not exceptional

In this review paper we carry on our investigations on Schroedinger operators with inverse square potentials on the half-line. Depending on several parameters, such operators possess either a finite number of complex eigenvalues, or an infinite one, but also some spectral singularities embedded in the continuous spectrum (exceptional situations). The spectral and the scattering theory for these operators is recalled, and new results for the exceptional cases are provided. Some index theorems in scattering theory are also developed, and explanations why these results can not be extended to the exceptional cases are provided.

Quantum walks with an anisotropic coin II: scattering theory

We perform the scattering analysis of the evolution operator of quantum walks with an anisotropic coin, and we prove a weak limit theorem for their asymptotic velocity. The quantum walks that we consider include one-defect models, two-phase quantum walks, and topological phase quantum walks as special cases. Our analysis is based on an abstract framework for the scattering theory of unitary operators in a two-Hilbert spaces setting, which is of independent interest.

On radial Schroedinger operators with a Coulomb potential

This paper presents a thorough analysis of 1-dimensional Schroedinger operators whose potential is a linear combination of the Coulomb term 1/r and the centrifugal term 1/r^2. We allow both coupling constants to be complex. Using natural boundary conditions at 0, a two parameter holomorphic family of closed operators is introduced. We call them the Whittaker operators, since in the mathematical literature their eigenvalue equation is called the Whittaker equation. Spectral and scattering theory for Whittaker operators is studied. Whittaker operators appear in quantum mechanics as the radial part of the Schroedinger operator with a Coulomb potential.

Index theorems for Fredholm, semi-Fredholm, and almost periodic operators: all in one example

Based on operators borrowed from scattering theory, several concrete realizations of index theorems are proposed. The corresponding operators belong to some C*-algebras of pseudo-differential operators with coefficients which either have limits at plus and minus infinity, or which are periodic or asymptotically periodic, or which are uniformly almost periodic. These various situations can be deduced from a single partial isometry which depends on several parameters. All computations are explicitly performed.

Quantum walks with an anisotropic coin I: spectral theory

We perform the spectral analysis of the evolution operator U of quantum walks with an anisotropic coin, which include one-defect models, two-phase quantum walks, and topological phase quantum walks as special cases. In particular, we determine the essential spectrum of U, we show the existence of locally U-smooth operators, we prove the discreteness of the eigenvalues of U outside the thresholds, and we prove the absence of singular continuous spectrum for U. Our analysis is based on new commutator methods for unitary operators in a two-Hilbert spaces setting, which are of independent interest.

Does Levinson's theorem count complex eigenvalues ?

Yes it does ! Indeed an extended version of Levinson's theorem is proposed for a system involving complex eigenvalues. The perturbed system corresponds to a realization of the Schroedinger operator with inverse square potential on the half-line, while the Dirichlet Laplacian on the half-line is chosen for the reference system. The resulting relation is an equality between the number of eigenvalues of the perturbed system and the winding number of the scattering system together with additional operators living at 0-energy and at infinite energy.

Vortices in stratified protoplanetary disks : From baroclinic instability to vortex layers

Large scale vortices could play a key role in the evolution of protoplanetary disks, particularly in the dead-zone where no turbulence associated with magnetic field is expected. Their possible formation by the subcritical baroclinic instability is a complex issue due to the vertical structure of the disk and to the elliptical instability.} {In two-dimensional disks the baroclinic instability is studied as a function of the thermal transfer efficiency. In three-dimensional disks we explore the importance of radial and vertical stratification on the processes of vortex formation and amplification.} {Numerical simulations are performed using a fully compressible hydrodynamical code based on a second order finite volume method. We assume a perfect gas law in inviscid disk models in which heat transfer is due to either relaxation or diffusion.} {In 2D, the baroclinic instability with thermal relaxation leads to the formation of large-scale vortices, which are unstable with respect to the elliptic instability. In the presence of heat diffusion, hollow vortices are formed which evolve into vortical structures with a turbulent core. In 3D, the disk stratification is found to be unstable in a finite layer which can include the mid-plane or not. When the unstable layer contains the mid-plane, the 3D baroclinic instability with thermal relaxation is found to develop first in the unstable layer as in 2D, producing large-scale vortices. These vortices are then stretched out in the stable layer, creating long-lived columnar vortical structures extending through the height of the disk. They are also found to be the source of internal vortex layers that develop across the whole disk along baroclinic critical layer surfaces, and form new vortices in the upper region of the disk.} {In three-dimensional disks, vortices can survive for a very long time if the production of vorticity by...

Low energy spectral and scattering theory for relativistic Schroedinger operators

Spectral and scattering theory at low energy for the relativistic Schroedinger operator are investigated. Some striking properties at thresholds of this operator are exhibited, as for example the absence of 0-energy resonance. Low energy behavior of the wave operators and of the scattering operator are studied, and stationary expressions in terms of generalized eigenfunctions are proved for the former operators. Under slightly stronger conditions on the perturbation the absolute continuity of the spectrum on the positive semi axis is demonstrated. Finally, an explicit formula for the action of the free evolution group is derived. Such a formula, which is well known in the usual Schroedinger case, was apparently not available in the relativistic setting.
