Aharonov-Bohm spectral features and coherence lengths in carbon nanotubes

The electronic properties of carbon nanotubes are investigated in the presence of disorder and a magnetic field parallel or perpendicular to the nanotube axis. In the parallel field geometry, the $ϕ_{0}(=hc/e)$-periodic metal-insulator transition (MIT) induced in metallic or semiconducting nanotubes is shown to be related to a chirality-dependent shifting of the energy of the van Hove singularities (VHSs). The effect of disorder on this magnetic field-related mechanism is considered with a discussion of mean free paths, localization lengths and magnetic dephasing rate in the context of recent experiments.

Investigation of quantum transport by means of O(N) real-space methods

Quantum transport for different systems is investigated by developing the Kubo formula on a basis of orthogonal polynomials. Results on quantum Hall systems are presented with particular attention to metal insulator transitions and new universalities. Other potential applications of the present method for RKKY mesoscopic interaction and insight for large scale computational problems, are given.

Fermi surfaces and anomalous transport in quasicrystals

Fermi surfaces of several quasicrystalline approximants are calculated by means of ab-initio methods which enable direct comparison with dHvA experiments. A criterion for anomalous metallic transport is proposed and power-law temperature dependence of electronic conductivity is deduced from scaling analysis of the Kubo formula.

Conductivity in 3D quasiperiodic systems

We develop a new real-space method which allows to evaluate the Kubo-Greenwood conductivity of independent electrons in static aperiodic potentials. We apply it to a numerical study of propagation modes in 3 dimensional quasiperiodic systems. The effect of quenched disorder is analysed and for Fermi energies in pseudo-gaps, the conductivity can be stable or even increase with disorder.

Electronic transport properties of quasicrystals: a Review

We present a review of some results concerning electronic transport properties of quasicrystals. After a short introduction to the basic concepts of quasiperiodicity, we consider the experimental transport properties of electrical conductivity with particular focus on the effect of temperature, magnetic field and defects. Then, we present some heuristic approaches that tend to give a coherent view of different, and to some extent complementary, transport mechanisms in quasicrystals. Numerical results are also presented and in particular the evaluation of the linear response Kubo-Greenwood formula of conductivity in quasiperiodic systems in presence of disorder.

Role of phason-defects on the conductance of a 1-d quasicrystal

We have studied the influence of a particular kind of phason-defect on the Landauer resistance of a Fibonacci chain. Depending on parameters, we sometimes find the resistance to decrease upon introduction of defect or temperature, a behavior that also appears in real quasicrystalline materials. We demonstrate essential differences between a standard tight-binding model and a full continuous model. In the continuous case, we study the conductance in relation to the underlying chaotic map and its invariant. Close to conducting points, where the invariant vanishes, and in the majority of cases studied, the resistance is found to decrease upon introduction of a defect. Subtle interference effects between a sudden phason-change in the structure and the phase of the wavefunction are also found, and these give rise to resistive behaviors that produce exceedingly simple and regular patterns.

Transmission Resonance in an Infinite Strip of Phason-Defects of a Penrose Approximant Network

An exact method that analytically provides transfer matrices in finite networks of quasicrystalline approximants of any dimensionality is discussed. We use these matrices in two ways: a) to exactly determine the band structure of an infinite approximant network in analytical form; b) to determine, also analytically, the quantum resistance of a finite strip of a network under appropriate boundary conditions. As a result of a subtle interplay between topology and phase interferences, we find that a strip of phason-defects along a special symmetry direction of a low 2-d Penrose approximant, leads to the rigorous vanishing of the reflection coefficient for certain energies. A similar behavior appears in a low 3-d approximant. This type of ``resonance" is discussed in connection with the gap structure of the corresponding ordered (undefected) system.
