Proceedings of the Workshop on Monte Carlo's, Physics and Simulations at the LHC PART II

These proceedings collect the presentations given at the first three meetings of the INFN "Workshop on Monte Carlo's, Physics and Simulations at the LHC", held at the Frascati National Laboratories in 2006. The first part of these proceedings contains pedagogical introductions to several basic topics of both theoretical and experimental high pT LHC physics. The second part collects more specialised presentations.

Physics at large p_T^2 and Q^2: Summary

We summarize the results presented in the `Physics at large p_T^2 and Q^2' working group at the DIS'2002 Workshop. Higgs searches, precision measurements as well as searches for physics beyond the Standard Model at current and future experiments are reviewed.

Charmed Mesons Fragmentation Functions

Fragmentation functions for heavy-light mesons, like the charmed D, D^* mesons, are proposed. They rest on next-to-leading QCD Perturbative Fragmentation Functions for heavy quarks, with the addition of a non-perturbative term describing phenomenologically the quark --> meson transition. The cross section for production of large p_T D, D^* mesons at the Tevatron is evaluated in this framework.

Inclusive particle photoproduction to next-to-leading order

We study the inclusive photoproduction of neutral and charged pions and $η$ at HERA, via the resolved photon mechanism, in QCD to next-to-leading order. We present various distributions of phenomenological interest and study the theoretical uncertainties due to the mass scales, and to photon and proton sets of structure functions. A new set of fragmentation functions for charged pions is also presented.

Next to leading order eta production at hadron colliders

Inclusive eta production at hadron colliders is considered, based on evaluation of eta fragmentation functions at next to leading order. Absolute predictions at LHC and SSC are presented, including the ratio $η/π^0$, together with the estimate of the theoretical uncertainty, as a possible neutral background to the $H\to γγ$ detection.

Next to leading order determination of pion fragmentation functions

We perform a complete next to leading order evaluation of inclusive neutral pion production from hadronic colliders which is based on the knowledge of the pion fragmentation functions at next to leading order. This problem has been tackled for the first time using different approaches. Predictions at LHC are given with the estimate of the theoretical uncertainty.
