High performance new MgB2 superconducting hollow wires

MgB2 hollow wires have been produced with a new technique which uses a conventional wire manufacturing process but is applied to composite billets containing the elemental B and Mg precursors in an appropriate shape. The technique has been applied to the manufacture of both monofilamentary and multifilamentary wires of several tens meters length. The superconducting transport properties of the MgB2 hollow wires have been measured in magnetic field and in the temperature range from 4.2 to 30 K. Promising results are obtained, which indicate the possibility of application of these wires as superconductors in the temperature range of 15-30 K and at medium-high values of magnetic field.

Metallicity estimates for A-, F-, and G-type stars from the Edinburgh-Cape blue object survey

The Edinburgh-Cape Blue Object Survey is an ongoing project to identify and analyse a large sample of hot stars selected initially on the basis of photographic colours (down to a magnitude limit B~18.0) over the entire high-Galactic-latitude southern sky, then studied with broadband UBV photometry and medium-resolution spectroscopy. Due to unavoidable errors in the initial candidate selection, stars that are likely metal-deficient dwarfs and giants of the halo and thick-disk populations are inadvertently included, yet are of interest in their own right. In this paper we discuss a total of 206 candidate metal-deficient dwarfs, subgiants, giants, and horizontal-branch stars with photoelectric colours redder than (B-V)o = 0.3, and with available spectroscopy. Radial velocities, accurate to ~10-15 km/s, are presented for all of these stars. Spectroscopic metallicity estimates for these stars are obtained using a recently re-calibrated relation between Ca II K-line strength and (B-V)o colour. The identification of metal-poor stars from this colour-selection technique is remarkably efficient, and competitive with previous survey methods. An additional sample of 186 EC stars with photoelectric colours in the range -0.4 < (B-V)o < 0.3, comprised primarily of field horizontal-branch stars and other, higher-gravity, A- and B-type stars, is also analysed. Estimates of the physical parameters Teff, log g, and [Fe/H] are obtained for cooler members of this subsample, and a number of candidate RR Lyrae variables are identified.

The INT Search for Metal-Poor Stars. Spectroscopic Observations and Classification via Artificial Neural Networks

With the dual aims of enlarging the list of extremely metal-poor stars identified in the Galaxy, and boosting the numbers of moderately metal-deficient stars in directions that sample the rotational properties of the thick disk, we have used the 2.5m Isaac Newton Telescope and the Intermediate Dispersion Spectrograph to carry out a survey of brighter (primarily northern hemisphere) metal-poor candidates selected from the HK objective-prism/interference-filter survey of Beers and collaborators. Over the course of only three observing runs (15 nights) we have obtained medium-resolution (resolving power ~ 2000) spectra for 1203 objects (V ~ 11-15). Spectral absorption-line indices and radial velocities have been measured for all of the candidates. Metallicities, quantified by [Fe/H], and intrinsic (B-V)o colors have been estimated for 731 stars with effective temperatures cooler than roughly 6500 K, making use of artificial neural networks (ANNs), trained with spectral indices. We show that this method performs as well as a previously explored Ca II K calibration technique, yet it presents some practical advantages. Among the candidates in our sample, we identify 195 stars with [Fe/H] <= -1.0, 67 stars with [Fe/H] <= -2.0, and 12 new stars with [Fe/H] <= -3.0. Although the EFECTIVE YIELD of metal-poor stars in our sample is not as large as previous HK survey follow-up programs, the rate of discovery per unit of telescope time is quite high.

Kinematics of Metal-Poor Stars in the Galaxy. II. Proper Motions for a Large Non-Kinematically Selected Sample

We present a revised catalog of 2106 Galactic stars, selected without kinematic bias, and with available radial velocities, distance estimates, and metal abundances in the range 0.0 <= [Fe/H] <= -4.0. This update of the Beers and Sommer-Larsen (1995) catalog includes newly-derived homogeneous photometric distance estimates, revised radial velocities for a number of stars with recently obtained high-resolution spectra, and refined metallicities for stars originally identified in the HK objective-prism survey (which account for nearly half of the catalog) based on a recent re-calibration. A subset of 1258 stars in this catalog have available proper motions, based on measurements obtained with the Hipparcos astrometry satellite, or taken from the updated Astrographic Catalogue (AC 2000; second epoch positions from either the Hubble Space Telescope Guide Star Catalog or the Tycho Catalogue), the Yale/San Juan Southern Proper Motion (SPM) Catalog 2.0, and the Lick Northern Proper Motion (NPM1) Catalog. Our present catalog includes 388 RR Lyrae variables (182 of which are newly added), 38 variables of other types, and 1680 non-variables, with distances in the range 0.1 to 40 kpc.
