Study of stability of gain and energy resolution for GEM detector in high rate operation

Study of the stability of gain and energy resolution for a triple GEM detector has been performed under continuous radiation of X-ray with high rate, using premixed gas of Argon and CO$_2$ in 70/30 ratio and conventional NIM electronics. A strong Fe$^{55}$ X-ray source is used for this study. The novelty of this study is that for the stability test same source is used to irradiate the GEM chamber and to monitor the spectrum. The radiation is not collimated to a point but exposed to a larger area. Effect of temperature and pressure on these parameters are also studied. The detail method of measurement and the first test results are presented in this article.

Discovery of a radio nebula around PSR J0855-4644

We report the discovery of a diffuse radio emission around PSR J0855--4644 using an upgraded GMRT (uGMRT) observation at 1.35 GHz. The radio emission is spatially coincident with the diffuse X-ray pulsar wind nebula (PWN) seen with XMM but is much larger in extent compared to the compact axisymmetric PWN seen with Chandra. The morphology of the emission, with a bright partial ring-like structure and two faint tail-like features strongly resembles a bow shock nebula, and indicates a velocity of 100 km/s through the ambient medium. We conclude that the emission is most likely to be associated with the radio PWN of PSR J0855-4644. From the integrated flux density, we estimate the energetics of the PWN.

Unconventional transport properties of an itinerant ferromagnet: EuTi$_{1-x}$Nb$_{x}$O$_3$ ($x$=0.10$-$0.20)

We report the temperature and magnetic field dependence of resistivity ($ρ$) for single-crystalline EuTi$_{1-x}$Nb$_{x}$O$_3$ ($x$=0.10$-$0.20), an itinerant ferromagnetic system with very low Curie temperature ($T_C$). The detailed analysis reveals that the charge conduction in EuTi$_{1-x}$Nb$_{x}$O$_3$ is extremely sensitive to Nb concentration and dominated by several scattering mechanisms. Well below the $T_C$, where the spontaneous magnetization follows the Bloch's $T^{3/2}$ law, $ρ$ exhibits $T^2$ dependence with a large coefficient $\sim$10$^{-8}$ $Ω$ cm K$^{-2}$ due to the electron-magnon scattering. Remarkably, all the studied samples exhibit a unique resistivity minimum at $T$$=$$T_{\rm min}$ below which $ρ$ shows logarithmic increment with $T$ (for $T_{\rm C}$$<$$T$$<$$T_{\rm min}$) due to the Kondo scattering of Nb 4$d^1$ itinerant electrons by the localized 4$f$ moments of Eu$^{2+}$ ions which suppresses strongly with applied magnetic field. In the paramagnetic state, $T^{2}$ and $T^{3/2}$ dependence of the resistivity have been observed, suggesting an unusual crossover from a Fermi-liquid to a non-Fermi-liquid behavior with increasing $T$. The observed temperature and magnetic field dependence of resistivity has been analysed using different theoretical models.

Textured heterogeneity in square artificial spin ice

We report evidence of spontaneous formation of a heterogeneous network of superdomains in two-dimensional square artificial spin ice nanostructures in externally applied magnetic fields. The magnetic heterogeneity is locally disordered but has a zig-zag texture at longer length scales. Resonant coherent soft-x-ray scattering off such textures give rise to unique internal structure in Bragg peaks. Our result shows that the macroscopic magnetic texture is derived from the microscopic structure of the Dirac strings.

NuSTAR + XMM-Newton monitoring of the neutron star transient AX J1745.6-2901

AX J1745.6-2901 is a high-inclination (eclipsing) transient neutron star (NS) Low Mass X-ray Binary (LMXB) showcasing intense ionised Fe K absorption. We present here the analysis of 11 XMM-Newton and 15 NuSTAR new data-sets (obtained between 2013-2016), therefore tripling the number of observations of AX J1745.6-2901 in outburst. Thanks to simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR spectra, we greatly improve on the fitting of the X-ray continuum. During the soft state the emission can be described by a disk black body ($kT\sim1.1-1.2$ keV and inner disc radius $r_{DBB}\sim14$ km), plus hot ($kT\sim2.2-3.0$ keV) black body radiation with a small emitting radius ($r_{BB}\sim0.5-0.8$ km) likely associated with the boundary layer or NS surface, plus a faint Comptonisation component. Imprinted on the spectra are clear absorption features created by both neutral and ionised matter. Additionally, positive residuals suggestive of an emission Fe K$α$ disc line and consistent with relativistic ionised reflection are present during the soft state, while such residuals are not significant during the hard state. The hard state spectra are characterised by a hard ($Γ\sim1.9-2.1$) power law, showing no evidence for a high energy cut off ($kT_e>60-140$ keV) and implying a small optical depth ($τ<1.6$). The new observations confirm the previously witnessed trend of exhibiting strong Fe K absorption in the soft state, that significantly weakens during the hard state. Optical (GROND) and radio (GMRT) observations suggest for AX J1745.6-2901 a standard broad band SED as typically observed in accreting neutron stars.

Resonant properties of dipole skyrmions in amorphous Fe/Gd multilayers

The dynamic response of dipole skyrmions in Fe/Gd multilayer films is investigated by ferromagnetic resonance measurements and compared to micromagnetic simulations. We detail thickness and temperature dependent studies of the observed modes as well as the effects of magnetic field history on the resonant spectra. Correlation between the modes and the magnetic phase maps constructed from real-space imaging and scattering patterns allows us to conclude the resonant modes arise from local topological features such as dipole skyrmions but does not depend on the collective response of a closed packed lattice of these chiral textures. Using, micromagnetic modeling, we are able to quantitatively reproduce our experimental observations which suggests the existence of localized spin-wave modes that are dependent on the helicity of the dipole skyrmion. We identify four localized spin wave excitations for the skyrmions that are excited under either in-plane or out-of-plane r.f. fields. Lastly we show that dipole skyrmions and non-chiral bubble domains exhibit qualitatively different localized spin wave modes.

Tailoring magnetic energies to form dipole skyrmions and skyrmion lattices

The interesting physics and potential memory technologies resulting from topologically protected spin textures such as skyrmions, has prompted efforts to discover new material systems that can host these kind of magnetic structures. Here we use the highly tunable magnetic properties of amorphous Fe/Gd multilayer films to explore the magnetic properties that lead to dipole-stabilized skyrmions and skyrmion lattices that form from the competition of dipolar field and exchange energy. Using both real space imaging and reciprocal space scattering techniques we determined the range of material properties and magnetic fields where skyrmions form. Micromagnetic modeling closely matches our observation of small skyrmion features (~50 to 70nm) and suggests these class of skyrmions have a rich domain structure that is Bloch like in the center of the film and more Néel like towards each surface. Our results provide a pathway to engineer the formation and controllability of dipole skyrmion phases in a thin film geometry at different temperatures and magnetic fields.

Implications of a zero-nonlinearity wavelength in optical fibers doped with silver nanoparticles

Photonic crystal fibers doped with silver nanoparticles exhibit the Kerr nonlinearity that can be positive or negative depending on wavelength and vanishes at a specific wavelength. We study numerically how the simultaneous presence of a zero-nonlinearity wavelength (ZNW) and a zero-dispersion wavelength affects evolution of soliton and supercontinuum generation inside such fibers and find a number of unique features. The existence of negative nonlinearity allows soliton formation even in the normaldispersion region of the fiber, and the ZNW acts as a barrier for the Raman-induced red shift of solitons.

Magnetically Charged Superdomain Walls In Square Artificial Spin Ice

We report direct evidence that magnetically charged superdomain walls form spontaneously in two dimensional square artificial spin ice nanostructures in response to external magnetic fields. These extended magnetic defects were revealed by the development of internal structure, which varies as a function of applied magnetic field, within the Bragg peaks of resonant soft x-ray magnetic scattering patterns. Magnetically charged superdomain walls extend over tens of lattice sites and do not necessarily align with the applied field. Our results illustrate a novel approach to detect hierarchical magnetic structures within spin textures.

Synthesizing Skyrmion Molecules in Fe-Gd Thin Films

We show that properly engineered amorphous Fe-Gd alloy thin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy exhibit room-temperature skyrmion molecules, or a pair of like-polarity, opposite-helicity skyrmions. Magnetic mirror symmetry planes present in the stripe phase, instead of chiral exchange, determine the internal skyrmion structure and the net achirality of the skyrmion phase. Our study shows that stripe domain engineering in amorphous alloy thin films may enable the creation of skyrmion phases with technologically desirable properties.

Systematics of dynamic moment of inertia in super-deformed bands in Mass ~150 region

An empirical semi-classical model have been proposed to investigate the nature of dynamic moment-of-inertia , of the super-deformed (SD) bands in nuclei of mass 150 region. The model incorporates an additional frequency dependent distortion, to the dynamic moment-of-inertia term akin to a vibrational component to explain the extreme spin structure of these bands. Using this model two separate components to the dynamic moment of inertia, $\Im^{(2)}$ have been identified for the SD band structure for the mass 150 region. Three distinct nature of the moment-of-inertia, also have been identified using the two parameter model.

Quasi-degenerate Neutrino mass models and their significance: A model independent investigation

The prediction of possible ordering of neutrino masses relies mostly on the model selected. Alienating the $μ-τ$ interchange symmetry from discrete flavour symmetry based models, turns the neutrino mass matrix less predictive. But this inspires one to seek the answer from other phenomenological frameworks. We need a proper parametrization of the neutrino mass matrices concerning individual hierarchies. In the present work, we attempt to study the six different cases of Quasi-degenerate (QDN) neutrino models. The related mass matrices, $m_{LL}^ν$ are parametrized with two free parameters ($α,η$) and standard Wolfenstein parameter ($λ$). The input mass scale $m_0$ is selected around $\sim 0.08\,eV$. We begin with a $μ-τ$ symmetric neutrino mass matrix tailed by a correction from charged lepton sector. The parametrization accentuates the existence of four independent texture zero building block matrices which are common to all the QDN models under $μ-τ$ symmetric framework. These remain invariant irrespective of any choice of solar angle. In our parametrization, the neutrino sector controls the solar angle, whereas the reactor and atmospheric angles are dictated by the charged lepton sector. In the framework of oscillation experiments, cosmological observation and future experiments involving $β$-decay and $0νββ$ experiments, all QDN models are tested and a reason to rule out anyone out of the six models is unfounded. A strong preference for $\sin^2θ_{12}=0.32$ is observed for QDNH-$Type A$ model.

Selective interlayer ferromagnetic coupling between the Cu spins in YBa$_2$ Cu$_3$ O$_{7-x}$ grown on top of La$_{0.7}$ Ca$_{0.3}$ MnO$_3$

Studies to date on ferromagnet/d-wave superconductor heterostructures focus mainly on the effects at or near the interfaces while the response of bulk properties to heterostructuring is overlooked. Here we use resonant soft x-ray scattering spectroscopy to reveal a novel c-axis ferromagnetic coupling between the in-plane Cu spins in YBa$_2$ Cu$_3$ O$_{7-x}$ (YBCO) superconductor when it is grown on top of ferromagnetic La$_{0.7}$ Ca$_{0.3}$ MnO$_3$ (LCMO) manganite layer. This coupling, present in both normal and superconducting states of YBCO, is sensitive to the interfacial termination such that it is only observed in bilayers with MnO_2but not with La$_{0.7}$ Ca$_{0.3}$ interfacial termination. Such contrasting behaviors, we propose, are due to distinct energetic of CuO chain and CuO$_2$ plane at the La$_{0.7}$ Ca$_{0.3}$ and MnO$_2$ terminated interfaces respectively, therefore influencing the transfer of spin-polarized electrons from manganite to cuprate differently. Our findings suggest that the superconducting/ferromagnetic bilayers with proper interfacial engineering can be good candidates for searching the theorized Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state in cuprates and studying the competing quantum orders in highly correlated electron systems.

Interface control of electronic transport across the magnetic phase transition in SrRuO_3/SrTiO_3 heterointerface

The emerging material class of complex-oxides, where manipulation of physical properties lead to new functionalities at their heterointerfaces, is expected to open new frontiers in Spintronics. For example, SrRuO_3 is a promising material where external stimuli like strain, temperature and structural distortions control the stability of electronic and magnetic states, across its magnetic phase transition, useful for Spintronics. Despite this, not much has been studied to understand such correlations in SrRuO_3. Here we explore the influence of electron-lattice correlation to electron-transport, at interfaces between SrRuO_3 and Nb:SrTiO_3 across its ferromagnetic transition, using a nanoscale transport probe and first-principles calculations. We find that the geometrical reconstructions at the interface and hence modifications in electronic structures dominate the transmission across its ferromagnetic transition, eventually flipping the charge-transport length-scale in SrRuO_3. This approach can be easily extended to other devices where competing ground states can lead to different functional properties across their heterointerfaces.

Fracturing tests on reservoir rocks: Analysis of AE events and radial strain evolution

Fracturing in reservoir rocks is an important issue for the petroleum industry - as productivity can be enhanced by a controlled fracturing operation. Fracturing also has a big impact on CO2 storage, geothermal installation and gas production at and from the reservoir rocks. Therefore, understanding the fracturing behavior of different types of reservoir rocks is a basic need for planning field operations towards these activities. In our study, the fracturing of rock sample is monitored by Acoustic Emission (AE) and post-experiment Computer Tomography (CT) scans. The fracturing experiments have been performed on hollow cylinder cores of different rocks - sandstones and chalks. Our analysis show that the amplitudes and energies of acoustic events clearly indicate initiation and propagation of the main fractures. The amplitudes of AE events follow an exponential distribution while the energies follow a power law distribution. Time-evolution of the radial strain measured in the fracturing-test will later be compared to model predictions of fracture size.

Antimagnetic rotation and sudden change of electric quadrupole transition strength in 143Eu

Lifetimes of the states in the quadrupole structure in 143Eu have been measured using the Doppler shift attenuation method as well as parity of the states in the sequence has been firmly identified from polarization measurement using the Indian National Gamma Array. The decreasing trends of the deduced quadrupole transition strength B(E2) with spin, along with increasing J (2) /B(E2) values before band crossing, conclusively establish the origin of these states as arising out of antimagnetic rotation. The abrupt increase in the B(E2) values after the band crossing in the quadrupole band, a novel feature observed in the present experiment, may indicates the crossing of different shears configurations resulting in re-opening of shears structure. The results are well reproduced by numerical calculation within the framework of semi-classical geometric model.

Testing Gravity with Cold-Atom Interferometers

We present a horizontal gravity gradiometer atom interferometer for precision gravitational tests. The horizontal configuration is superior for maximizing the inertial signal in the atom interferometer from a nearby proof mass. In our device, we have suppressed spurious noise associated with the horizonal configuration to achieve a differential acceleration sensitivity of 4.2$\times10^{-9}g/\sqrt{Hz}$ over a 70 cm baseline or 3.0$\times10^{-9}g/\sqrt{Hz}$ inferred per accelerometer. Using the performance of this instrument, we characterize the results of possible future gravitational tests. We complete a proof-of-concept measurement of the gravitational constant with a precision of 3$\times10^{-4}$ that is competitive with the present limit of 1.2$\times10^{-4}$ using other techniques. From this measurement, we provide a statistical constraint on a Yukawa-type fifth force at 8$\times$10$^{-3}$ near the poorly known length scale of 10 cm. Limits approaching 10$^{-5}$ appear feasible. We discuss improvements that can enable uncertainties falling well below 10$^{-5}$ for both experiments.
