Application of autoresonance in rapid beam extraction of synchrotrons

In recent years, ultra-high dose rate (FLASH) radiotherapy has become a novel cancer treatment technique because of its similar tumor-killing efficacy as conventional particle therapy while significantly protecting normal tissues. However, due to the limitation of particle number, achieving FLASH condition in a compact heavy-ion synchrotron requires a short extraction time of tens of milliseconds, which is challenging for the conventional RF-KO method. To tackle this challenge, we introduce autoresonance into the third-order resonant extraction for the first time, offering an alternative to the conventional approach of merely increasing the excitation strength. By leveraging a strong detuning effect, a frequency sweeping excitation with small amplitude can drive the entire beam into the autoresonant state, thus enabling rapid beam extraction within a single sweeping period. Compared with the conventional method, this innovative method requires only the addition of an octupole magnet. At the same time, it shows that the conventional RF-KO method has a high autoresonance threshold, so that only a small number of particles that meet the threshold can be excited to large amplitude and be extracted in each sweeping period. In this paper, the autoresonance threshold of a particle in the presence of sextupole and octupole magnetic fields is analyzed, and the single particle simulation shows good agreement with the theoretical formula. Furthermore, the autoresonance based rapid extraction process is simulated and studied, revealing the possibility of millisecond scale beam extraction.

SegTHOR: Segmentation of Thoracic Organs at Risk in CT images

In the era of open science, public datasets, along with common experimental protocol, help in the process of designing and validating data science algorithms; they also contribute to ease reproductibility and fair comparison between methods. Many datasets for image segmentation are available, each presenting its own challenges; however just a very few exist for radiotherapy planning. This paper is the presentation of a new dataset dedicated to the segmentation of organs at risk (OARs) in the thorax, i.e. the organs surrounding the tumour that must be preserved from irradiations during radiotherapy. This dataset is called SegTHOR (Segmentation of THoracic Organs at Risk). In this dataset, the OARs are the heart, the trachea, the aorta and the esophagus, which have varying spatial and appearance characteristics. The dataset includes 60 3D CT scans, divided into a training set of 40 and a test set of 20 patients, where the OARs have been contoured manually by an experienced radiotherapist. Along with the dataset, we present some baseline results, obtained using both the original, state-of-the-art architecture U-Net and a simplified version. We investigate different configurations of this baseline architecture that will serve as comparison for future studies on the SegTHOR dataset. Preliminary results show that room for improvement is left, especially for smallest organs.

Experimental Investigation of the Transition Energy $γ_t$ in the Isochronous Mode of the HIRFL-CSRe

The Isochronous Mass Spectrometry (IMS) based on storage rings is a powerful technique for mass measurement of short-lived exotic nuclei. The transition energy $γ_t$ of the storage ring is a vital parameter of the IMS technique. It is difficult to measure the $γ_t$ and its relation to momentum spread or circulating length, especially to monitor the variation of $γ_t$ during experiments. An experimental investigation on the $γ_t$ has been performed for the IMS experiment at the Cooler Storage Ring of the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL-CSRe). With the velocity measured by two time-of-flight (TOF) detectors, the $γ_t$ as a function of orbital length can be determined. The influences of higher order magnetic field components on the $γ_t$ function were inferred for isochronous correction. This paper introduces and investigates the influence of dipole magnetic fields, quadrupole magnetic fields and sextupole magnetic fields on the $γ_t$ function. With the quadrupole magnets and sextupole magnets corrections, a mass resolution of 171332 (FWHM) and $σ(T)/T=1.34\times10^{-6}$ were reached, which shall be compared with 31319 (FWHM) and $σ(T)/T=7.35\times10^{-6}$ obtained without correction.
