Towards reconciling the holographic and lattice descriptions of radially excited hadrons

Within the framework of AdS/QCD models, the spectra of radially excited hadrons are identified with towers of Kaluza-Klein (KK) states in a putative dual theory. The infinite number of KK states is indispensable to provide correct high energy asymptotics of correlation functions in QCD. It is known, however, that the KK modes of dual theory must be qualitatively different from real hadrons. And what is more important, the radially excited states appear in lattice calculations not as "excitations" of some ground state, but rather as independent states coupled to higher dimensional QCD operators - the larger is a basis of interpolating operators, the larger set of states can be resolved. A question arises whether it is possible to reconcile the holographic and lattice descriptions of radially excited hadrons? We propose a new phenomenological "consistency test" for bottom-up holographic models: If the KK spectrum of massive 5D fields corresponding to higher dimensional operators in QCD coincides with the conventional radial KK spectrum, then the holographic KK states can be identified with real excited mesons in the large-Nc limit of QCD - as in the lattice QCD, they become a superposition of several states interpolated by operators of different canonical dimensions. We demonstrate that the Soft Wall holographic model passes this test while the Hard Wall model does not.

A new approach to radial spectrum of hadrons in bottom-up holographic QCD

Within the AdS/CFT correspondence, for description of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions one needs not only low-energy supergravity on AdS$_5$ but also the whole infinite tower of massive Kaluza-Klein (KK) states on AdS$_5\times$S$_5$ which appear after the KK-compactification on five-dimensional sphere. The latter aspect is usually ignored in phenomenological AdS/QCD models. The emerging massive 5D fields on AdS$_5$ are dual to higher-dimensional operators in 4D gauge theory, with masses being known polynomial functions of canonical dimensions of these operators. Motivated by this observation, we propose to calculate the spectrum of radially excited hadrons in bottom-up holographic QCD models as spectrum of zero KK modes of massive 5D fields dual to higher dimensional operators in QCD. A relevant physical motivation is suggested. The radial states with growing masses are then enumerated by growing dimensions of interpolating QCD operators. We tested the proposal in the Soft Wall and Hard Wall holographic models in the sector of light mesons. The spectrum of Soft Wall model turns out to be unchanged in the new description. But in the Hard Wall model, our approach is shown to lead to a much better phenomenological spectrum of vector radial excitations than the traditional description.

Deconfinement temperature in AdS/QCD from the spectrum of scalar glueballs

We scrutinize various holographic estimations of the deconfinement temperature within the bottom-up AdS/QCD models. A special emphasis is put on the recent idea of isospectral potentials in the holographic approach. It is demonstrated that different models from an isospectral family (i.e., the models leading to identical predictions for the spectrum of hadrons with fixed quantum numbers) result in different predictions for the deconfinement temperature. This difference is found to be quite small in the scalar glueball channel but very large in the vector meson channel which is often used for fixing parameters of holographic models. The observed stability in the former case clearly favors the choice of the glueball channel for thermodynamic predictions in AdS/QCD models, with the scalar glueball trajectory being taken from lattice simulations and used as a basic input in improved versions of the Soft Wall holographic model.

A multiquark approach to excited hadrons and Regge trajectories

We propose a novel approach to construction of hadron spectroscopy. The case of light nonstrange mesons is considered. By assumption, all such mesons above 1 GeV appear due to creation of constituent quark-antiquark pairs inside the pi or rho (omega) mesons. These spin-singlet or triplet pairs dictate the quantum numbers of formed resonance. The resulting classification of light mesons turns out to be in a better agreement with the experimental observations than the standard quark model classification. It is argued that the total energy of quark components should be proportional to the hadron mass squared rather than the linear mass. As a byproduct a certain relation expressing the constituent quark mass via the gluon and quark condensate is put forward. We show that our approach leads to an effective mass counting scheme for meson spectrum and results in the linear Regge and radial Regge trajectories by construction. An experimental observation of these trajectories might thus serve as an evidence not for string but for multiquark structure of highly excited hadrons.

Electromagnetic couplings of radially excited light vector mesons from QCD sum rules

The couplings of unflavored vector mesons to the $e^+e^-$ annihilation are an important source of information on the nature and structure of these resonances which play a prominent role in the hadron phenomenology. The couplings of many radially excited heavy vector mesons are measured, while the corresponding couplings for light vector mesons are not known. We propose a phenomenological method allowing to estimate these unknown couplings. The method is suggested by our observation that the electromagnetic coupling of the $n$-th radial excitation of $S$-wave heavy vector meson decouples from the $e^+e^-$ annihilation with nearly exponential rate with $n$. It becomes natural to assume that the same effect takes place in the light vector mesons and this would allow to estimate the unknown couplings. We tested this assumption with the help of a generalized version of borelized QCD spectral sum rules saturated by a linear radial trajectory of meson states taken from the phenomenology. This leads to a consistent setup which is able to predict the decoupling rate. The calculated rate turned out to be almost the same as in the heavy vector mesons. Our result may be interpreted as an effective account for non-trivial electromagnetic formfactor in meson decays to $e^+e^-$, thus looking beyond the large-$N_c$ limit. On the one hand, we argue that the given decoupling does not necessary contradict to the previous large-$N_c$ results for the Regge like meson spectra.

Glueballs and deconfinement temperature in AdS/QCD

We put forward an alternative way to estimate the deconfinement temperature in bottom-up holographic models. The deconfinement in AdS/QCD is related to the Hawking-Page phase transition, in which the critical Hawking temperature is identified with the deconfinement one in the gauge theory. The numeric estimation of the latter is only possible when the parameters of a $5D$ dual model are previously determined from consistency with other physical aspects, standardly, providing a description of the QCD resonances. The traditional way to fix parameters in the simplest AdS/QCD models is to reproduce the mass of the $ρ$ meson or the slope of the approximate radial Regge trajectory of the $ρ$ excitations. Motivated by a general idea that the slope value originates in gluodynamics, we propose calculating the deconfinement temperature using the trajectory of scalar glueballs. We consider several holographic models and use the recent idea of isospectral potentials to make an additional check of the relevance of our approach. It is demonstrated that different models from an isospectral family (i.e. the models leading to identical predictions for spectrum of hadrons with fixed quantum numbers) result in different predictions for the deconfinement temperature. This difference is found to be quite small in the scalar glueball channel but very large in the vector meson channel. The observed stability in the former case clearly favours the choice of the glueball channel for thermodynamic predictions in AdS/QCD models. For a balanced approach, we argue that either assuming $f_0(1500)$ to have a dominating component of $0^{++}$ glueball or accepting the idea of the universality in the radial Regge trajectories of light non-strange vector mesons one can reproduce the results for the deconfinement temperature obtained before in the lattice simulations in the background of non-dynamical quarks.

The linear radial spectrum of scalar mesons within the QCD sum rules in the planar limit

We discuss the radial spectrum of light scalar mesons in the framework of spectral sum rules in the large-Nc (planar) limit of QCD. Two methods based on the use of linear radial Regge trajectories are presented. A special emphasis is placed on the appearance of scalar isoscalar state near 0.5 GeV. Within the considered sum rules, the existence of this meson (which could be a large-Nc counterpart to the sigma-meson) is closely related with existence of resonances in the vector channels and on the radial scalar trajectory.

The large-Nc limit of borelized spectral sum rules and the slope of radial Regge trajectories

We put forward a new phenomenological method for calculating the slope of radial trajectories from values of ground states and vacuum condensates. The method is based on a large-$N_c$ extension of borelized spectral sum rules. The approach is applied to the light non-strange vector, axial, and scalar mesons. The extracted values of slopes proved to be approximately universal and are in the interval $1.4\pm0.1$ GeV$^2$. As a by-product, the given method leads to prediction of the second radial trajectory with ground state mass lying near 0.6 GeV.

The large-Nc masses of light scalar mesons from QCD sum rules for linear radial spectrum

We discuss a calculation of large-Nc masses of light scalar mesons from the QCD sum rules. Two methods based on the use of linear radial Regge trajectories are presented. We put a special emphasis on the appearance of pole near 0.5 GeV in the scalar isoscalar channel which emerges in both methods and presumably corresponds to the scalar sigma-meson.

Large-$N_c$ masses of light mesons from QCD sum rules for non-linear radial Regge trajectories

The large-$N_c$ masses of light vector, axial, scalar and pseudoscalar mesons are calculated from QCD spectral sum rules for a particular ansatz interpolating the radial Regge trajectories. The ansatz includes a linear part plus exponentially degreasing corrections to the meson masses and residues. The form of corrections was proposed some time ago from consistency with analytical structure of Operator Product Expansion of the two-point correlation functions. Two solutions are found and compared with the experimental data.

A novel multiquark approach to hadron resonances

A new approach to description of hadron spectroscopy is proposed. By assumption, the form of spectrum is dictated by the trace of energy momentum tensor in QCD. This provides the relativistic and renormalization invariance of hadron masses. The constructed scheme is applied to the light mesons for which two complementary interpretations are worked out. The first one represents an "atomic" structure of resonances above 1 GeV in which the quanta of non-perturbative gluon contributions are quantified via an effective formation of quasiparticles representing likely gluon analogues of positronium. This picture allows to build a "periodic table of the hadronic elements", i.e. to classify hadrons, in some sense, in analogy with Mendeleev table in chemistry. The classification does not require introduction of the orbital angular momentum associated with hadron constituents. The Regge and radial trajectories emerge in a natural way. The second interpretation is based on a "collisional" nature of some (or many) hadrons, specifically of scalar resonances below 1 GeV. Here the role of quasiparticles is played by another hadron. This picture in particular leads to a simple explanation of the puzzling scalar sector below 1 GeV with correct predictions for masses and dominant decay modes.

The sigma meson from QCD sum rules for large-$N_c$ Regge spectra

The QCD sum rules in the large-$N_c$ limit for the light non-strange vector, axial and scalar mesons are considered assuming a string-like linear spectrum for the radially excited states. We propose a improved method for combined analysis of these channels that gives a reasonable description of the observed spectrum. In the vector-axial case, fixing the pion decay constant and the gluon condensate we obtain more or less physical values for the masses of ground states and the quark condensate. Thus a typical need for this method to fix the mass of some ground state is overcome. Using in the scalar channel the values of presumably universal slope of radial trajectories and the quark condensate obtained in the vector-axial channel, we find that, in contrast to some strong claims in the literature, a prediction of light scalar state with a mass close to the mass of $f_0(500)$ seems to be natural in the considered approach and may follow in a natural way from the Regge phenomenology.

Lower and upper bounds on the mass of light quark-antiquark scalar resonance in the SVZ sum rules

The calculation of the mass of light scalar isosinglet meson within the Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov (SVZ) sum rules is revisited. We develop simple analytical methods for estimation of hadron masses in the SVZ approach and try to reveal the origin of their numerical values. The calculations of hadron parameters in the SVZ sum rules are known to be heavily based on a choice of the perturbative threshold. This choice requires some important ad hoc information. We show analytically that the scalar mass under consideration has a lower and upper bound which are independent of this choice: $0.78\lesssim m_s\lesssim1.28$ GeV.

The no-wall holographic model for vector quarkonia

We use the no-wall holographic approach (a relative of the soft-wall one) to construct a universal description of vector mesons with arbitrary quark masses. The proposed model predicts a specific dependence of the parameters of radial Regge trajectories on the quark masses in a reasonable agreement with the meson phenomenology and some theoretical expectations.

Linear radial Regge trajectories for mesons with any quark flavor

In the Regge phenomenology, the radial spectrum of light mesons is given by a linear relation $M_n^2=a(n+b)$, where $a$ is a universal slope, the dimensionless intercept $b$ depends on quantum numbers, and $n$ enumerates the excited states in radial recurrences. The usual extensions of this relation to heavy quarkonia in the framework of hadron string models typically lead to strong nonlinearities which seem to be at variance with the available experimental data. Introducing a radially static string picture of mesons, we put forward a linear generalization $(M_n-m_1-m_2)^2=a(n+b)$, where $m_{1,2}$ are quark masses. The vector channel contains enough experimental states to check this new relation and a good agreement is observed. It is shown that this generalization leads to a simple estimate of current quark masses from the radial spectra.

Soft-wall modelling of meson spectra

The holographic methods inspired by the gauge/gravity correspondence from string theory have been actively applied to the hadron spectroscopy in the last eleven years. Within the phenomenological bottom-up approach, the linear Regge-like trajectories for light mesons are naturally reproduced in the so-called "Soft-wall" holographic models. I will give a very short review of the underlying ideas and technical aspects related to the meson spectroscopy. A generalization of soft-wall description of Regge trajectories to arbitrary intercept is proposed. The problem of incorporation of the chiral symmetry breaking is discussed.
