Peak Effect, Fishtail Effect and Plateau Effect : The Reentrant Amorphization of Vortex Matter in 2H-NbSe_2

The magnetic field dependence of the critical current is studied in single crystal samples of the weak pinning type-II superconductor 2H-NbSe$_2$ in the high temperature and the low field region of the (H,T) phase space, in the vicinity of the reentrant peak effect. The experimental results demonstrate various pinning regimes : a collective pinned quasi-ordered solid in the intermediate field that is destabilized in favor of disordered vortex phases in both high fields near H$_{c2}$ and at low fields near H$_{c1}$. The temperature evolution of the pinning behavior demonstrates how the amorphous limit (where the correlation volume is nearly field independent) is approached around the so-called nose region of the reentrant peak effect boundary. Furthermore, the data show that the rapid approach to the amorphous limit naturally yields a peak effect, i.e., a peak in the critical current, in the high field regime, but yields a ``plateau effect'' instead in the low field regime in an analogous way. With increasing effective disorder the peak effect shifts away from H$_{c2}$ and resembles a ``fishtail'' anomaly.

Simultaneous Observation of Fishtail Effect and Peak Effect in 2H-Nbse$_2$

We report on the discovery of the simultaneous observation of Fishtail Effect (FE) and Peak Effect (PE) via the study of angular dependence of dc magnetization hysteresis loops in a clean crystal of 2H-NbSe$_2$. These result clarify and establish the occurrence of the reentrant characteristics in order to disorder transformation in an isothermal scan close to zero field superconducting transition temperature of 2H-NbSe$_2$. The ubiquitous FE arises from coalescence of two anomalous variations in current density J$_c$, one of which is related to the collapse of the rigidity FLL close to H$_{c2}$ and another one located at very low fields presumably corresponds to the pinning induced order to disorder transformation. When the two effects get well separated, an ordered state of FLL exists in the intermediate field region.

Reentrant Peak Effect in an anisotropic superconductor 2H-NbSe_2 : Role of disorder

The reentrant nature of Peak Effect is established in a single crystal of 2H-NbSe_2 via electrical transport and dc magnetisation studies. The role of disorder on the reentrant branch of PE has been examined in three single crystals with varying levels of quenched random disorder. Increasing disorder presumably shrinks the (H,T) parameter space over which vortex array retains spatial order. Although, the upper branch of the PE curve is somewhat robust, the lower reentrant branch of the same curve is strongly affected by disorder.
