Effects of the transversely nonuniform plasma density in a blowout regime of a plasma wakefield accelerator

We present an analytical study on the effects of the transverse plasma gradient in the blowout regime of a plasma wakefield accelerator (PWA). The analysis departs from a simple ballistic model of plasma electrons that allows us to derive a complete analytic solution for the pseudopotential and, consequently, for the wakefield. We demonstrate that the transverse plasma gradient modifies the bubble shape and affects the wakefield. Namely, the dipole plasma gradient results in a dipole component of the wakefield. Analysis suggests that, despite the asymmetry, the instability due to the fixed transverse plasma gradient is unlikely, as the total wakefield has a single stable point inside the bubble. The only effect that occurs is the shift of the electromagnetic center. We point out that random fluctuation of the transverse plasma gradient could become an issue.

Shifting physics of vortex particles to higher energies via quantum entanglement

Physics of structured waves is currently limited to relatively small particle energies as the available generation techniques are only applicable to the soft $X$-ray twisted photons, to the beams of electron microscopes, to cold neutrons, or non-relativistic atoms. The highly energetic vortex particles with an orbital angular momentum would come in handy for a number of experiments in atomic physics, nuclear, hadronic, and accelerator physics, and to generate them one needs to develop alternative methods, applicable for ultrarelativistic energies and for composite particles. Here, we show that the vortex states of in principle arbitrary particles can be generated during photon emission in helical undulators, via Cherenkov radiation, in collisions of charged particles with intense laser beams, in such scattering or annihilation processes as $eμ\to eμ, ep \to ep, e^-e^+ \to p\bar{p}$, and so forth. The key element in obtaining them is the postselection protocol due to entanglement between a pair of final particles and it is largely not the process itself. The state of a final particle -- be it a $γ$-ray, a hadron, a nucleus, or an ion -- becomes twisted if the azimuthal angle of the other particle momentum is measured with a large error or is not measured at all. As a result, requirements to the beam transverse coherence can be greatly relaxed, which enables the generation of highly energetic vortex beams at accelerators and synchrotron radiation facilities, thus making them a new tool for hadronic and spin studies.

Generation of vortex particles via generalized measurements

The hard X-ray twisted photons and relativistic massive particles with orbital angular momentum -- vortex electrons, muons, protons, etc. -- have many potential applications in high-energy and nuclear physics. However, such states can be obtained so far mainly via diffraction techniques, not applicable for relativistic energies. Here we show that the vortex states of different particles, including hadrons, ions, and nuclei, can be generated in a large class of processes with two final particles simply by altering a postselection protocol. Thanks to entanglement and to the uncertainty relations, an evolved state of a final particle becomes twisted if the momentum azimuthal angle of the other particle is measured with a large uncertainty. We give several examples, including Cherenkov and undulator radiation, particle collisions with intense laser beams, $eμ\to eμ, ep \to ep$. This technique can be adapted for ultrarelativistic lepton and hadron beams of linear colliders, and it can also facilitate the development of sources of X-ray and $γ$-range twisted photons at storage rings and free-electron lasers.

Evolution of the accelerated charged vortex particle in an inhomogeneous magnetic lens

We present a detailed analysis of the capture and acceleration of a non-relativistic charged vortex particle (electron, positron, proton, etc.) with an orbital angular momentum in a field of an axisymmetric electromagnetic lens, typical for a linear accelerator. We account for the acceleration as well as for the inhomogeneity of both electric and magnetic fields that may arise from some real-life imperfections. We establish conditions when the wave packet can be captured and successfully transported through the lens. We describe the transition process and explain how a free Laguerre-Gaussian packet could be captured into the Landau state of the lens preserving its structure for all moments in time. Several representative examples are provided to illustrate developed formalism.

Flat bubble regime and laminar plasma flow in a plasma wake field accelerator

A simple 2D model of the bubble formation in a plasma wakefield accelerator is developed and investigated. It is shown that in the case of a flat driver the bubble may consist of two parts that correspond to two different types of the plasma flow: a laminar flow where plasma electron streams do not cross and a two-stream (turbulent) flow. The laminar flow turns out to be robust to the symmetry breaking. Building-of of the developed model we demonstrate that in the case of the laminar flow and non-relativistic plasma electrons the transverse wake field is absent inside the bubble even in the case of a transversely nonuniform plasma.

On "Efficiency versus Instability in plasma accelerators"

Recently in a paper by Lebedev et al it was demonstrated that the efficiency of the energy transfer from the drive bunch to the witness bunch in the plasma wakefield accelerator has a limit due to the BBU instability of the witness bunch. It was stated that the efficiency-instability relation is universal and thus should be considered as a fundamental limit. In this note, we show that recent results on the short-range wakefields indicate that this relation should be modified and conclusions of the paper by Lebedev et al should be reconsidered. In particular, we argue that the efficiency-instability relation produces only the lower bound for efficiency and thus does not produce a fundamental limit.

Hamiltonian preserving nonlinear optics

In this paper we present a method of constructing a nonlinear accelerator lattice that has an approximate integral of motion that is given upfront. The integral under consideration is a Hamiltonian in normalized (canonical) coordinates that is preserved by a lattice with a given accuracy. We establish a connection between the integrator of a Hamiltonian in normalized coordinates and a real lens arrangement. We apply known algorithms of high-order symplectic integrators, to produce several nonlinear lattices and show that this approach could improve the design of the nonlinear insert considered at the IOTA and UMER facilities. We also suggest new lattice design based on the Yoshida integrator.

Analytical treatment of the wakefields driven by transversely shaped beams in a planar slow-wave structure

The suppression of transverse wakefield effects using transversely elliptical drive beams in a planar structure is studied with a simple analytical model that unveils the geometric nature of this phenomenon. By analyzing the suggested model we derive scaling laws for the amplitude of the longitudinal and transverse wake potentials as a function of the Gaussian beam ellipticity - $σ_x/a$. We explicitly show that in a wakefield accelerator application it is beneficial to use highly elliptical beams for mitigating transverse forces while maintaining the accelerating field. We consider two scaling strategies: 1) aperture scaling, where we keep a constant charge to have the same accelerating gradient as in a cylindrical structure and 2) charge scaling, where aperture is the same as in the cylindrical structure and charge is increased to match the gradient.

Stability condition for the drive bunch in a collinear wakefield accelerator

The beam breakup instability of the drive bunch in the structure-based collinear wakefield accel- erator is considered and a stabilizing method is proposed. The method includes using the specially designed beam focusing channel, applying the energy chirp along the electron bunch, and keeping energy chirp constant during the drive bunch deceleration. A stability condition is derived that defines the limit on the accelerating field for the witness bunch.

Calculation of the Cherenkov fields in the cross-section of a short relativistic bunch

Recently, a new method for calculating the Cherenkov field acting on a point-like electron bunch passing through longitudinally homogeneous structures lined with arbitrary slowdown layers was proposed, where the formalism was obtained though consideration of a general integral relation that allows calculation of the fields at the vicinity of a point-like bunch. It demonstrates that the Cherenkov field at the point of the short relativistic bunch does not depend on the waveguide system material and is a constant for any given transverse dimensions and cross-section shapes of waveguides. With this paper we present a strict derivation of the fields formulas valid at the cross-section of a bunch on the basis of a conformal mapping method. We generalize the results of the previous paper to the case of transversely distributed bunch by deriving a two-dimensional Green function at the cross-section of a bunch. Comparison of the results proving validity of the method is given in the appendix.

Analytical Loss Factors in Approximation of the Leontovich Boundary Conditions

Recently the new method of the Cherenkov fields and loss factors of a point-like electron bunch passing through longitudinally homogeneous structures lined with arbitrary slowdown layers was proposed. It was shown that the Cherenkov loss factor of the short bunch does not depend on the waveguide system material and is a constant for any given transverse dimensions and cross-section shapes of the waveguides. It was shown that with the proposed approach one can use a relatively simple method for the calculation of the total loss factor using an integral relation based on the cylindrical slowdown waveguide model. With this paper, we demonstrate that the same integral relation that we call relativistic Gauss theorem can be applied in case impedance boundary conditions (IBC) also known as Leontovich boundary conditions.

Cherenkov loss factor of short relativistic bunches:general approach

The interaction of short relativistic charged particle bunches with waveguides and other accelerator system components is a critical issue for the development of X-ray FELs (free electron lasers) and linear collider projects. Wakefield Cherenkov losses of short bunches have been studied previously for resistive wall, disk-loaded, corrugated and dielectric loaded waveguides. It was noted in various publications [1] that if the slowdown layer is thin, the Cherenkov loss factor of a short bunch does not depend on the guiding system material and is a constant for any given transverse cross section dimensions of the waveguides. In this paper, we consider a new approach to the analysis of loss factors for relativistic short bunches and formulate a general integral relation that allows calculation of the loss factor for a short relativistic bunch passing an arbitrary waveguide system. The loss factors calculated by this new method for various types of waveguides with arbitrary thickness slowdown layers, including infinite media, are shown to be equivalent to those obtained by a conventional approach.

QED Effects in Heavy Few-Electron Ions

Accurate calculations of the binding energies, the hyperfine splitting, the bound-electron g-factor, and the parity nonconservation effects in heavy few-electron ions are considered. The calculations include the relativistic, quantum electrodynamic (QED), electron-correlation, and nuclear effects. The theoretical results are compared with available experimental data. A special attention is focused on tests of QED in a strong Coulomb field.
